I have a 2000 toyota tundra and it has a problem that when the car gets hot the engine will stall out and die without warning. it creates no omd ii errors and the check engine light never appears. the ecm fuse blows on occasion but replacing it does not lead to a running vehicle. it fails to start until the engine compartment cools down. there is fire from the spark plugs and there is fuel pressure in the fuel rail. we have replaced all the relays and fuses in the ecm and efi circuits and all fingers are now pointing to the ecm controller itself. we just changed out the fuel pump and are looking at replacement of all the ignition coils (8) and all the fuel injectors (8). but since all of these components seam to be working that would make little since. the recent recall for the ecm on the matrix & corolla indicate that there may have been problems with the manufacture of ecm units for a much longer period of time since my tundra is exhibiting the same problem. this problem has been getting worse for over 5 years now and the toyota dealers and other toyota specialty shops cannot find the problem since there are no engine codes and the fact that it will start and run fine after it cools down. i have been waiting for it to die and not start at all to hope to find the problem.

Tl-the contact owns a 2000 toyota tundra. while driving approximately 45-50 mph he heard a loud noise and the left rear spring broke and immediately the vehicle stopped. he engaged the accelerator and heard another loud noise and coasted the vehicle into a parking lot. the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer. the dealer advised him that it would be 3 months before they could get to his vehicle because of the back log of recalls. he stated the dealer performed the recall work on his vehicle on august 23, 2010 recall 09v444000, structure: frame and members:underbody shields. as he was leaving the dealer he engaged the brakes and the brake pedal went to the floor he informed the service manager of the failure. the service manager kept the vehicle over night and the dealer clean, adjusted the rear brake and freed up the parking brake cable. when he went to get the vehicle he was advised that the vehicle was experiencing transmission problem. the dealer advised him that the transmission needs replacing. the vehicle was at the dealer waiting for parts. the failure mileage was 102,168 and the current mileage was 102,192. vwb

At 78,000 miles the transmission began making a noise and vibration that upon first impression sounded and felt like running into a pothole. the truck would also, intermittently fail to go into reverse gear. after dropping the transmission pan it was determined that the pan had several clumps of metal shavings and the transmission has to be replaced. this is an egregious mechanical failure on a vehicle with low mileage and well maintained. *tr

At 80,000 miles my transmission needs to be replaced . i have never abused this vehicle in any form and feel that toyota should reimburse the many thousands of owners who seem to be having the same problems with this model. for the amount of money these vehicles cost it only seems fair that toyota should be forced to stand behind their products. *tr

The transmission occasionally made a clunking noise and felt like the tire hit a small pothole in the road when shifting into overdrive. this started around 80,000 miles. i had the transmission fluid changed and the transmission pan dropped. the pan magnets had mostly small metal shavings but also a few larger pieces around 1/4 long. now at 85,000 miles the transmission makes a very loud thud noise and shakes the truck violently every time it shifts into overdrive. i am forced to keep the truck in 3rd gear until i reach the freeway and then must press the o/d switch to shift into 4th gear/overdrive. my mechanic will be replacing the transmission next week as he has been on vacation. i cannot believe that the transmission must be replaced at only 85,000 miles! i am a careful driver and conscientious about maintenance. *tr

I bought my truck and about three weeks ago i was driving along when it died. anytime i came to a full stop it died. turns out it's the transmission and a lot of other people have had the same problem. toyota refuses to issue a recall on their planetary gear even though it malfunctions. this failure caused my truck to stop in a busy intersection and almost killed me. *tr

Automatic transmission transmission on the tundra truck is a known problem, experienced by thousands of tundra owners across the country, and yet toyota fails to admit the problem and help owners with the cost of repair. the transmission on my 2000 tundra needs to be replaced due to abrupt gear shifting which cause the truck to lunge forward. i've complained to toyota and their answer was your truck is out of warranty. i've been a toyota owner for 15 years, but after this experience i will not buy another toyota. *nm

2000 toyota tundra 65,000 miles. out of warranty. the orbital gear in the transmission blew up. this gear has been discontinued by toyota ,and replaced with a more heavy duty gear. this is a defect of the transmission. many tundra owners across the country are having the same problem. toyota has turned their backs to this problem. this is a $3000.00 repair job. *ak

Constant binding of the transmission. after coming to a complete stop, vehicle will jerk forward as though it has ben hit in the rear-end. this will also happen after coming to a complete stop, and after brake pedal is released, vehicle will jerk. at times, and after coming to a complete stop and sitting for a few minutes, vehicle will jerk forward as though it has been hit in the rear-end. vehicle feels as though the transmission is binding when brakes are applied. once brakes are released, binding is released, and jerking begins. i have taken vehicle to the dealership within a few weks of purchase to have problem corrected, only to be told nothing was wrong, even though they were aware of the problem, but there was no fix. i have searched the internet, and have read various complaints by other toyota tundra owners experincing the same problem, but toyota fails to reconize the problem.

The shift lever broke off, disconnected from the steering column at about 21000 miles. after i parked the truck, i was not able to shift it to reverse or any other gear. i had the vehicule towed to a dealer and they replaced the shift lever, tube steering, support tilt mechanism, and shaft control. (covered under warranty) at 44, 000 miles. the exact same problem happened. i talked to the dealer and to a toyota corporate representative, they stated since my vehicule is out of warranty, there was nothing they could do for me. i feel toyota should cover the cost of the repair since this is a reccuring problem that is part of the drive train. the shift lever is a part that should last the live cycle of the vehicule. they are well aware of the deffect ; they should bear the cost. *ak

11/24/200690000105/01/2000
Dt*: the contact stated the shift lever disintegrated off the steering wheel. the vehicle was taken to the service dealer who determined they would need to replace a bracket to fix the shift lever. the vehicle was still at the dealer awaiting the repair work. the consumer stated the shifter shattered without warning and was unable to place the vehicle in gear. updated 12/18/06. *jb the consumer stated the problem with the accelerator began in summer of 2005. he started the vehicle stepped on the accelerator and nothing happened. he then depressed the accelerator pedal to the floor and the truck lunged forward. only by carefully pumping the gas pedal up and down was he able to attain approximately 40 mph. the searched the internet to see if others had experienced the problem. within in a short period of time, he found someone else who experienced the same problem. it was caused by a loose connection where the accelerator pedal position sensor wire connects to its female connector. which was located on top of the engine. the consumer looked at the connector and it seemed connected. he pushed the connector down hard and to his astonishment it clicked into place. which solved the problem. the consumer stated two years later, the same problem presented itself again. once he arrived home, he clicked the electrical connector securely in place. he used some copper electrical wire and wired the connector firmly in place. the consumer stated his best guess to the problem with the connector: was the design of the plastic was faulty. the plastic tab wasn't large enough to hold it securely in the socket and over time, road vibration caused it to come loose. also, the starter failed. updated 03/08/10
01/19/200681400109/27/2000
Dt*: the contact stated the column gear shift was placed into park atop a hill with the emergency brake engaged and the engine running, the vehicle rolled forward and crashed into a tree. after initial parking of the vehicle, the contact exited the vehicle. while attempting to reenter the vehicle and stop the forward motion injuries were sustained. the vehicle rolled downhill 60-70 yards and totaled due to the extensive damage. after the crash, the contact inspected the vehicle and the column gear shift was in park and the emergency brake was still engaged. the vehicle was not seen by an authorized dealer or repair shop. updated 03/28/06. *jb

Chronic rear axle seal leakage (leaks gear lube). dealer has attempted to repair my problem 3 times since 2005. dealer cannot repair problem. this is a known issue with toyota trucks and suvs using a similar rear axle design. it is a fire hazard since gear lube leaks onto hot exhaust piping. it is a braking hazard since gear lube contaminates rear brakes and reduces braking power. seals begin to leak early in life of vehicle but are not dealt with until leak is noted (after seals have been leaking for some time) and problem is severe. *tr
POWER TRAIN - CLUTCH ASSEMBLY - BELL HOUSING

Truck lurches at times when stopping, downshifts are sometimes hard. i've had several dealers look at it, and they have said it's fine. there is no transmittion filter (standard) so i payed to have it flushed. it worked great for a couple days. i think this has to do with the drive shaft, and the requirement for re-torquing that is supposed to be done to it according to the user manual. i have kept up the maintenance on it, but i think its some flaw in the linkage or a control problem. tires are now new, but has had no effect. basically, it sometimes shifts/jerks like it has a belt drive, not a geared one.*ak

I have a 2000 toyota tundra that i brought in 2005 when i was in ny. i have moved to ct since. i was having my rear brakes adjusted 2 years ago when my mechanic told me that my rear end housing was leaking gear oil. i had to replace the whole rear end housing costing me $1,500. last week i was having the front brakes replaced and same mechanic told me that my frame behind the driver's door was rusted through. i know that the 2000 tacomas were involved in a recall about rusted frames. i also know that the 2000 tundra and 2000 tacoma have the same frame. i don't understand how toyota can have a recall for one model and no recall for another model either though both models have the same faulty part????????? *tr
