Defect SummaryToyota is recalling model year 2000-2003 tundra vehicles originally sold in or currently registered in the following states: connecticut, delaware, illinois, indiana, kentucky, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, virginia, west virginia, wisconsin and the district of columbia. excessive corrosion of the rear cross member may cause the separation of the spare tire stowed under the truck bed which would present a road hazard that could cause a crash. also, corrosion of the rear cross member could affect the rear brake lines and the proportioning valve resulting in diminished braking capability.
Consequence SummarySeparation of the spare tire and diminished brake capacity could increase the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryToyota is asking owners of the affected vehicles to remove the spare tire from under the vehicle until a remedy can be obtained. dealers will inspect the rear cross member and related components, including the brake lines, and replace them if necessary. if the cross member does not need to be replaced, it will be sprayed with a corrosion protection compound. these services will be performed free of charge, however multiple visits to the dealer may be required. the safety recall is expected to begin on or about april 30, 2010. owner may contact toyota at 1-800-331-4331.
NotesToyota safety recall no. ssc90/90m.owners may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to http://www.safercar.gov .

This investigation was opened based on 20 reports of model year (my) 2000 and 2001 vehicles experiencing severe corrosion of the frame, resulting in either under-body mounted spare tire separation or rear brake failure.the failure report counts shown above are for my 2000 and 2001 vehicles only.by letter of november 16, 2009 toyota has notified the agency that it will conduct a safety recall (09v-444) of approximately 110,000 model year (my) 2000 through 2003 tundra vehicles.the affected recalled vehicles were sold or are currently registered in the district of columbia and the states of ct, de, il, in, ky, ma, md, me, mi, mn, nh, nj, ny, oh, pa, ri, va, vt, wi, wv.toyota alleges high amounts of road salts are used in these areas and excessive corrosion of the rear cross-member (to which the spare tire is mounted) can occur and cause the spare tire to separate from the vehicle and can also lead to rear brake failure.toyota stated: toyota has tentatively concluded that the root cause is a combination of factors, including usage in areas where road salt is applied, inadequate vehicle maintenance (i.e., not following the recommendations in the owner's manual), the design of the rear cross-member, and manufacturing issues.the design of the rear cross-member is such that it is open on the top side and susceptible to accumulation of dirt, water and road salt.manufacturing issues of the rear cross-member related to the coating process also affect its corrosion resistance.toyota also states that owners of my 2000 through 2003 vehicles in states not covered by the recall will be notified on how to obtain the same inspection and repair as the recalled vehicles, free of charge.further toyota states: please note that while toyota has not determined a defect exists in 2004 through 2006 my tundra vehicles, toyota plans on initiating a field action in the near future to prevent future corrosion on those vehicles originally sold or currently registered in the affected region at no cost to the owner.by letter of january 8, 2010 toyota has notified the agency that it amended its defect information report for safety recall 09v-444 to include the fuel tank mounting system (i.e., fuel tank support straps and fuel tank mounting cross-members) in the safety recall.toyota states: toyota has not decided that the fuel tank mounting system in those vehicles contains a safety-related defect within the meaning of federal motor vehicle safety law.rather, toyota is taking this action at odi's request and to avoid future disagreement with odi with respect to this issue.my 2007 and newer tundra vehicles are not included in any of toyota's actions as the rear cross-member in those vehicles have been redesigned so that it is open on the bottom.the actions taken by toyota are sufficient to resolve the issues raised by this investigation.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist in the subject vehicles.the agency will take further action if warranted by the circumstances.

I own a 2000 toyota tundra 4x4 limited access cab. i took it in to my local dealership on 4/26/2010 for unrelated servicing and because i was concerned about the amout of rust on the rear frame components. i had heard about the recall and assumed that they would tell me something. i was told that it was ok, and that i would be contacted when they have the anti-corrosive treatment ready. today is 11/24/2010 and i have still heard nothing. pieces of the frame rails continue to flake and fall off in sheets (some approximately 4 inches long and 1/16th of an inch thick or greater). i'm concerned about the structural integrity of this vehicle. i'm especially worried that the rear springs will give out while driving and cause injury or worse. nhtsa and usdot should look into this problem. toyota needs to compensate owners of these vehicles as was done for the tacomas that experienced the same failure. the rusting problem is much greater than just the rear cross-member.

On 24 nov 09 toyota issued a recall for 2000 tundra pickups, regarding frame corrosion and particularly corrosion on the cross member that holds the spare tire. although i read about this online, toyota has yet to inform me by mail. on 24 march 2010 i took my truck in to berlin city motors in portland me for an inspection of this problem. they told me that my corrosion was not enough to warrant frame replacement, but that i would be notified of when to return for application of some sort of corrosion inhibiting gunk. seven months later i heard nothing. i called totota customer services and began a complaint process. they said that they are still sending out recalls ..almost a year later!!! they claim that they need info from the state of maine regarding legality of applying corrosion inhibiting gunk on safely, and they need other permissions. it is my opinion that toyota is stalling on this fairly simple recall, hoping to reduce the problem by attrition of older vehicles. i would appreciate info from nhtsa as to why toyota is being allowed to take this long on a project that isn't exactly rocket science. thanks, norm

The under side of my 2000 toyota tundra is so badly rusted that i had to have the spare tire removed and my brake lines and all of my frame are rusted. the rust continues to flake and fall from the frame of the truck. i have brought it to my dealer and they said they would order a new cross member part to replace what is there however, i have not heard from the dealer because they have not heard from toyota. i am afraid to drive my truck. there is way more rust than just to the cross member frame. the entire frame is badly rusted and has gone into the brake lines!

I purchased a 2000 toyota tundra with only 107k miles on the odo. this was just before toyota announced a minor rust recall. i took the vehicle to the local toyota dealership and to my surprise they told me that the entire frame was compromised. i have now been without a vehicle since the 28th of dec because my low mileage truck was deemed unsafe for the road. toyota has yet to offer a solution to this problem. *tr

To whom it may concern, i own a 2000 4x4 limited tundra which has a rust problem. most of the underside of the vehicle has heavy surface rust. it also has a front body mount that is rusted and corroded the medal is flaking and peeling away. i took the vehicle to a toyota dealer for inspection. the dealer told me that the frame has no perforation holes in it. nothing they can do. in addition to all the rust i had to replace rear brake lines and rear parking brake assembly on both sides do to rust and corrosion. i called toyota corp to complain about these problems all they did was give me a case number. i also told them that the value of my vehicle has been compromised due to the rust . they will not do anything until holes are formed through the frame. i feel im caught between a rock and a hard place. toyota did the right thing last year with the tacomas having rust issues but doing nothing for tundra owners. *tr

The truck cannot pass inspection because of a rusted frame. there are holes (2-3) in both side rails of frame, 3 of the crossmembers are rusted through, one of them totally disintegrated. the rear cross member is also carries the spare wheel, which eventually will fall off and may cause an accident. rear brakelines are attached to this crossmember also, which may also be ruptured. rear shackles for rear springs are almost rusted through and are very unsafe. no accident has happened yet, but vehicle in inoperable. *tr

Complaint and concern regarding my toyota tundra truck, year 2000. my auto mechanic advises me that the rear frame, along with the supports that attach the truck bed to frame have rusted to point that they are unsafe, and should be replaced. he states that the bed is becoming unsecure due to the heavy corrosion of the brackets and that parts of the frame will need to be reinforced within the next year. the rust and corrosion is very visible - and all this in spite of fact that the truck is garaged and very well maintained - less than 90 k miles and only one driver. i have been unable to trade it in due to the heavy rust problem of the frame and brackets. he says that in an accident, the truck bed could fly off if the problem is not resolved. *tr

I have a 2000 toyota tundra. during normal maintenance i was informed that the frame had a severe rust issue. this was so severe that the mechanic had to be extremely cautious when putting the vehicle on the lift as to not damage the frame. the vehicle has approximately 60,000 miles and at this point is almost un safe to drive. the reason for the maintenance was that the shifter cable had rusted through, not allowing me to change gears. i was informed about the recall on the toyota tacoma fro this same issue and filed a report with toyota on this tundra issue. at this point i have no options. i won't sell a possible dangerous car to anyone else and i doubt i would get any thing fro a trade. *tr

I own a 2000 toyota tundra and it failed its annual pennsylvania state inspection due to a frame rust issue. the toyota dealership that did the inspection and failed the truck, i assume, knew of a potential problem and thank god, thoroughly inspected the truck's frame. they found a hole in the frame that concerned them to the point that failed the truck's state inspection and i ended up paying $294.25 to have a frame patch welded in to prevent a failure of the frame in the area of the rusted hole. i had the truck undercoated at the time of purchase in 2000 and that undercoating is blistering off, and has been blistering off for a few years. the undercoating was maintained under a ziebart warranty until 2005 when ziebart closed the local franchises. this means the underside of my truck has been without the warranted protection for only four years. this is ridiculous that a truck, that has been as meticulously maintained as mine has been, is experiencing a frame rust issue to the level that it fails a state inspection !!!! the underside of the truck is heavily rusted despite the additional precautions i've taken of undercoating, maintaining the undercoating, and religiously spraying the excessive salt off of the vehicle in the winter months during the times of high exposure. i am extremely concerned about the safety and integrity of my truck every time i get behind its steering wheel now. one of my biggest concerns is, that in the unfortunate event that i would be involved in a collision of significance, the engineering safety standards required to be met regarding frame structural integrity will be grossly compromised by the rotting frame and will no longer be able to offer the designed protection that the engineers calculated. the protective structure will no longer be able to provide the necessary safety buffer for me and my passengers from the extreme energy forces experienced during a life threatening collision when we'll be counting on it with our lives. *tr

We have a 2000 toyota tundra ,and the complaint is rust, first my bumpers went .,the rear bumper got so rusted that my daughter sat on the bumper and she fell to the ground., i called toyota ,the said call my local dealer.,i did., my local dealer told me they couldn't do nothing about it ,they said it wasn't there problem . so at this point i never replaced the bumper because toyota wanted 400.00 without putting the bumper on and i can not afford that. anyway who says a new toyota bumper would be no good any ways! second and most important is the frame year after year after year..... i tried to apply an undercoat to the frame and then the next year no matter how much under coating i put on the frame it gets like a 100 times worse i think the rust behind the under coating just breaks apart and just falls off as i drive because the year after the rust is 100 times worse!!!! if you would please ., look into this asap because im really scared to drive this truck, and i don't want to sell it to someone else because i would be afraid for them and feel terrible if something dangerous happened to us or them, please help! thank you *tr

I have a 2000 toyota tundra and it is rusted to the point where i cannot get a new inspection sticker. this past weekend i was driving and the spare tire was so badly rusted it broke loose from the mount and nearly caused me to crash as it jammed beneath my vehicle. it then bounced back and almost hit the car behind me. this was a very near miss! i have been fighting with toyota to have them help me with this problem but they are doing nothing. i am hoping that they will do for us what they did for tacoma owners. *tr updated 03/25/10 *bf

While i was driving my toyota tundra down highway truck started to drive erratically. i took to my mechanic who told me there was significant rust on entire frame. steering rack had separated from frame and struts were rusted out. same frame as tacoma why has toyota not responded to problem. i called dealer who told me to call toyota. the call to toyota was useless. they told me that there was nothing that they could do for me. i wish that somebody would do the right thing and take care of this serious problem. if an accident happens to seriously hurt somebody toyota will deserve all the suits that will come there way. *tr

In october 2008 i had the truck inspected and was told about unusual amount of frame rust. they gave me a sticker but said it might not pass inspection next time. i took the vehicle to my toyota dealership and asked them to inspect the rust on the frame. they said it was just surface rust. july 22, 2009 i had it in for an oil change at the dealer and they said i have some buckling in the frame from excessive rusting. the service advisor said he didn't think it was safe to drive. he suggested i contact toyota. i will do that tomorrow. *tr

Late spring or early summer of last year i had been driving my family home from the grandparents. we felt a sound louder and problem worse than a pot hole. it was a normal road paved. it was in webster, ma. the truck seemed to be fine until late june the truck started to leak power steering fluid. took it to the dealer (tri-state toyota scion and dodge). i explained the problem to the customer service lady. she told me about the rust problem they had with both the tacoma's and tundra's and said the would check my truck out for frame corrosion. without showing me they said there was none. then proceeded to tell me the cost to fix this problem and was a ridiculous amount. it then got inspected by an autobody specialist. precision auto repair look at it and said the frame is junk just like the tacoma's. i ask jim audett the owner for a preliminary estimate so i could send to toyota. the power steering rack had broken away from the frame and chunk's of the frame (metal are falling off this truck). the integrity of this vehicle has been compromised by the corrosion and is not a road worthy vehicle. i spent $19,000 for this truck in early january 2007 about 14 moths before toyota did the recall on the tacoma's. i have been given the run around by the dealer and toyota for almost a year. i have subsequently taken and sent to attorney generals of both massachusetts and connecticut to inform them of this potential road hazard to all. it would be greatly appreciated if your agency could look into this because toyota is reluctant to stand behind this poor quality vehicle. they have denied there was any corrosion. the pictures prove beyond a shadow of a doubt this is a manufacturers problem. you can view the pictures at www.tundrasolutions.com and look up user name rustytundra007. if you would like also www.pickuptrucks.com wrote an article on the truck too. this truck was also featured on wcvb tv in boston ma. www.thebostonchannel.com has posted report. *tr

I own a 2000 toyota tundra and was driving north on interstate 95 in maine. without warning, the back end of the truck suddenly lifted up off the pavement while traveling at 65 mph. when i regained control of the vehicle, i looked into the rear view mirror to see a tire bouncing erratically across several lanes of northbound traffic. cars were braking and swerving to avoid collision with the tire and fortunately it came to a rest against the median guardrail without crossing into southbound lanes and without damage to vehicles or injury to drivers. i immediately pulled into the emergency breakdown lane and inspected the truck to find that the spare tire was missing and a large corroded hole existed in the frame from which the tire had been mounted. i retrieved the tire and placed it in the bed. the following monday i took the truck to the toyota dealer where it was purchased to received an evaluation from a mechanic of what went wrong and if it can be repaired. the toyota dealer claimed that they have been seeing significant frame corrosion of toyota tundra trucks of this model year, similar to that of tacoma's which had been recalled. they were unsure that the frame of my vehicle could be successfully repaired, due to the extensive corrosion and perforation. they did say that the vehicle could not pass a safety inspection regardless. it is clear that corrosion to this extreme extent on toyota tundra frames warrant attention from the nhtsa, due to the clear and present danger this defect poses to the traveling public. if spare tires fall from the frame mount in this manner, drivers of this model year toyota tundra and surrounding vehicles at the time of an incident of this nature are at extreme risk of severe injury and/or death. toyota was contacted regarding this incident (case # 0905118853) and say that there is currently no program at present to recall any of the vehicles due to the currently low number of complaints. *tr

2000 toyota tundra 62,000 miles. locally driven. frame ,cab and bed are severely rusted. the bed is covered with a tonneau cover and is rusting from the weld joints out. the c channel frame is perforated below the bed. toyota states that it does not know of a problem with the tundras, they just did a buyback program with the 1995-2000 tacomas for the same reason. frames for both trucks are made in the states, does anyone see a connection? poor metal or prep? *tr

2000 toyota tundra with rust holes through frame over and beside rear shock brackets and spring brackets. i am at my wits end with toyota and have tried to resolve this obvious defect at every level. this has become a safety issue for my self and other drivers, it is just a matter of time before the frame will snap in half. this truck is only 8 years old and the problem is getting worse by the day, i reported this with toyota almost two years ago and they said they would put it in the system? now march of 2009 toyota has inspected the truck and admits there is a problem but does not want to resolve it. i can go on line and find alot of complaints about this same problem with toyota dodging the issue. i was wondering if this would be something that should be looked into since they have already had this problem with some of the other trucks they manufacture. i plan to also notify my insurance company that they possibly could be insuring a potential disaster. your help and input would be greatly appreciated. *tr

We bought a 2000 toyota tundra, 4x4, extra cab. at 800 klms we noticed there was no paint left on the front bottom corners of the box. at 5800 klms there is no paint left on the whole undercarage of the truck, large chunks of metal gone from the rockerpanels, rock chips all over the vehicle including the roof. this truck has factory tires, mudflaps, and fender flares and still throws rocks so extensively to the rear, centre and front of the vehicle you actually drive right into them therefore damageing the windshield as well. it is dangerous for any mortorist behind it. we are currently heading into a dispute with toyota canada via canvap as toyota canada's position on this matter is that nothing is covered under warrenty as it is owner abuse due to driving on abnormal road conditions!! we drive 2 klms a day on a government maintained gravel road, and 60 klms a day on a major highway. we have seen two other tundra's with the same problem so far and are looking for any other tundra owners who have this problem. our truck looks like it has been sandblasted. we have reports from independent body specialist who can't believe what this truck is doing. *ak

(1). i purchased a new 2000 toyota tundra extended cab limited at price toyota in delaware. in february 2009 i observed rust through of bracket from bed to frame visible through rear wheel well. requested that my wife report this to liberty toyota in nj during routine 5000 mile oil change. she was told that this was not a problem. (2). in september 2009 truck was again taken to liberty toyota for 5000 mile oil change, purchase of 5 new tires and alignment. liberty toyota service told my wife that the truck was rusted to the point where they could no longer align the vehicle and no service was performed. liberty took photos of the underside of the truck and transmitted them to toyota. approximately two weeks later liberty told my wife that toyota's position was that because of the age and mileage (9 years and 110,000 miles ) that they would do nothing to resolve this issue. (3). in late september 2009 i purchased a 2006 toyota tundra crew cab 4 door tundra limited as a replacement vehicle for my wife a toyota runnemead, nj. on that same occasion the 2000 tundra was put on lift and inspected with a powerful light. observed various rust through of brackets and at least one fist sized hole through the frame. this was witnessed by the toyota runnemeade sales person, general manager, sales manager, and service manager. all agreed that this was worst case of rust they had seen, and were of the opinion that the truck was not safe to operate. (4). in october 2009 i contacted toyota customer service and received a case number. a few days later i again contacted toyota customer service and was told that toyota is studying the problem. this sounded like a stall tactic and gave me little hope for any voluntary positive action from toyota. as of today 11 november 2009 i have had no further contact from toyota. (5). i have purchased or helped purchase 5 toyota trucks for my family. total expenditure approximately $150,000. *tr

 1. my 2000 toyota tundra srt has serious undercarriage rust, and large pieces of metal are beginning to fall from the frame. the main beams of the frame are beginning too deteriorate, also the brake lines are corroded and brake fluid is beginning to seep through the lines. 2. rusted pieces of metal randomly fall from vehicle, and could cause damage or seriously injure other drivers on the road. the brake lines could rupture from the severe deterioration and lead to an accident. 3. currently i am not driving the vehicle until i get new brake lines, but there is nothing that can be done to the frame of the vehicle except recalling the truck. toyota needs to recall the toyota tundra before any major accidents occur and some one is fatally injured. *tr

Driving down road and spare tire fell off underneath the truck and rolled down the middle of the road. took truck to toyota dealership because a neighbor (who is a service manager) looked at it and said it was unsafe and the whole bottom was rusted out.. toyota claimed the vehicle was safe that it was just a rusted bolt. two weeks later the muffler was loud so we took it to a midas dealership. the mechanic called me in and stated that the issue was not the muffler the bolts and clamps had rotted out and he needed to drill holes to attach new bolts. he told me that the bolts holding the joints on the bed of the truck was unsafe and he felt that i should not drive the vehicle and definitely not on the highway. so now i have had 2 people claim the vehicle is unsafe and the toyota dealers claims it is safe. the whole underneath is a big pile of rust. luckily no one was injured when the tire fell of while i was doing 50 miles an hour. i was allowing my teenage son to drive this vehicle, but now it spends most of its time sitting in the driveway because we are afraid of a safety concern. *tr

I own a 2000 toyota tundra and a few years ago it began to shed its paint. it spots up like it is corroded with a chemical then begins to peel off. by this point the whole truck has either peeled off or is spotted. the running boards are also corroded and rusting with holes all over them. i contacted toyota and a rep looked at the truck and preceded to accuse me of exposing my truck to a chemical and saying he had never seen this happen before. they refused to make it right. i know of another lady with the same year truck and color of mine who has experienced the same problem. i did not buy my truck new, but it was only 5 or 6 yrs. old when this problem began to occur. i am thinking that i cannot be the only one out here who is experiencing this. thank you for all the help you can offer. *tr

I have a 2000 toyota tundra sr5 and the metal used is not of good quality. i have repaired the leaf springs on both sides three times due to the leafs breaking and i have never loaded the bed. also, the frame is extremely rotted with large chunks falling off. additionally the windshield leaks due to the metal rusting around the frame. i am very disappointed with this and have now heard several complaints from others about similar problems. i am the original owner of this truck and have always had it serviced by a certified toyota mechanic and fully expected it to last much longer as my previous toyota product had. *tr

Very concerned about the rust under my 2000 toyota tundra. it was inspected for the initial bed rust in jan 08 by my local dealer after a local reputable body shop agreed with me that things were not right underneath. dealer rep dismissed my concerns and did nothing. now i'm reading about these things falling apart. the below incident date is the date of the inspection. i intend to have another inspection by the dealer i purchased the truck from in the near future. *tr

The bed of my truck has roughly 8-10 rust holes that all formed on top of the cross member supports. one hole formed over the bed bolt which has now rendered this bolt useless in holding down the bed. all rust came from under the bed and eventually made its way through. there seems to be a serious factory defect in the seem sealer that they used around the cross members. the sealer broke down which allowed moisture and salt to enter and ruin my bed. also the frame of my truck has a significant amount of rust for its age and condition. it is occurring around the rear shackles most weld seems and other areas. i have done my best to neutralize the rust with proper prep and paint but it only buys time for the inevitable. toyota has had a problem with their tacoma trucks rusting through and i feel that they have the same problem with the tundra trucks. the rust problems my truck faces will eventually make my truck inoperable. it may cause a great threat to the safety of myself and other motorists if there is a rust failure on my 2000 toyota tundra. *tr

I recieved a recall notice on my 2000 toyota tundra for a rusted frame cross member in 04/22/10. went to the dealer, they looked at it & said the whole frame was junk, including the cross member. the spare tire already fell out from under the vehicle on to the highway,no one was behind me by luck.i was told by the dealer that toyota was buying these vehicles back, but after (7) calls to toyota they said they were going to repair them (replace the frame) as of today nothing was fixed yet & pieces of the frame keeps falling off everytime i drive it.the dealer keeps telling me they can't do anything untill they get ok from toyota. everytime i call toyota they tell me i'm on a list (#8) i have been there since april, but the list seems to never go down. toyota knew about this problem since, 11//16/2009 i think its time toyota fixes the problem or buy the trucks back. i want to list, this truck has no rust on the body at all just nothing under it to hold the good body. so much for their truck of the year with the extra heavy duty frame

On or about april 24th, 20010 my son was driving my 2000 toyota tundra pick up truck when the spare tire fell off the mount under the truck. i had been aware of some rust problems with this vehicle, however when i called my local toyota dealer they said they were not doing much about this problem at this time, due to all the gas pedal problems they are currently having at toyota. after bringing my truck home i looked underneath and saw a tremendous amount of rust. even the crossmember that supports the gas tank appears very rusty and is of concern to me now. i won't fill my gas tank beyond half a tank anymore. i intend to go to the toyota dealership and demand that they inspect my truck for safety reasons. *tr

2000 toyota tundra frame rust - large holes in frame and when you bang on the frame rails the garage floor looks like the rusteze tent from the movie cars. concerned about safety. dealer says they will be replacing the frame. not real comfortable with suggested solution and possible costs.

 1. normal everyday use. never plowed. never towed. no hitch. 2. lost my brakes going down hill on a back road. lucky! 3. got towed to mechanic. brake regulator failed due to excessive corrosion near the spare tire mount. replaced part along w/ all new brake lines due to excessive corrosion along the frame. was advised to have toyota inspect the frame due to excessive heavy corrosion. called toyota corp and got a claim # to have the frame inspected. was told the only part of the frame to be looked at was the rear cross member' dropped of the truck. called to see if it was ready. was told buy the dealership you are all set. the rear cross member was fine and the truck was ready to be picked up. i asked if they looked at the frame under the transmission. they stated they did and noted there was heavy rust and corrosion. i asked if any holes were found in the frame during the inspection. they stated the noticed preforation on some areas of the frame. i then asked them if it was safe to drive. there was a silent pause and then let me call you back they called back and stated it was not safe to drive and were not fixing anything. i called corporate and asked them if i was able to have alternate transportation provided. i was told no. i had to go take my unsafe truck back. i have not been contacted for any follow up from the dealership or the corp office. the frame has holes in it. it has never been off road. it has never had a hitch attached to it. it has never had a plow attached to it. this truck is nine years old has a great engine that has had all the proper maintenance done as scheduled. the body is in excellent shape. this truck has been very well taken care of. there are several class action suits against toyota for this malfunction and lack of response. i will be doing the same. how can a dealership advise you to come get your truck and 5 mins later tell you it is unsafe for you and your family. had i not asked the proper questions. my due dillegence.

I had a 2000 toyota tundra shipped from massachuesetts to where i live in montana. i bought it from a auto sales there whereby asking them before i even considerd buying it if it had any rust issues. i was told no and the conversations i had throughout the dealing process i was confident that they were being upfront with me. i had it shipped to my son in denver and he shuttled it to me in sheridan, wyoming, where i picked it up and drove it home to montana. after inspecting it when i got home i was stunned to find the extent of the rust on the frame and various parts. one of the brackets that is welded to the frame that holds the steering stabilizer is almost gone. after talking to a friend of mine that owns a body shop he informed me about frame rust issues on earlier year tundra's in certain parts of the country, massacheusetts being one of them. he also informed me about recalls associated with this problem. after going online and reading on the toyota website what the recall involves i am very sad to find it only tallks about a rear crossmember that holds the spare tire. this doesn't come close to the extent of the rust on this frame and associated parts. this is my hard earned money and more importantly the fact not being able to trust people that you deal with has made this event a nightmare. ii have to believe that there was a defect in the steel that toyota used in these frames for the rust to be this bad.

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 toyota tundra. the contact took the vehicle to an authorized dealer to inspect the structure body. there was a recall under nhtsa campaign id number 09v444000 (structure; frame and members: underbody shields). the technician was unable to find a defect within the rear cross member associated with the recall ; however, a hole was detected in the left front frame rail. the hole was contributed to an excessive amount of rust. the manufacturer notified the contact regarding the rust on the frame and stated that the contact would be responsible for the repairs. the contact stated that the vehicle was unsafe and failed to comply with the standards to pass the state safety inspection. the failure mileage was 105,524.

When i took my 2000 toyota tundra into the toyota dealer for my annual ny state inspection i was informed that the vehicle could not pass nys inspection. the reason given was due to a rust hole in the frame on the right side, front, next to the sway bar.  Based on a news story on pbs advising toyota owners of a 2000-2003 tundra should be advised to check for excessive rust on the rear cross member of the frame and the attachment details of the spare tire stored under the frame. i had received no recall notice or letter of an advisorythe vehicle is a sr5 (4x4) regular cab ,8' bed, 114,000 miles and meticulously maintained, with a leer high cap , and bedliner i tis one owner. a mechanic briefly looked under the vehicle who told me he wanted to put it on the lift to get a better look.the damage was so severe to both rails of the frame that the truck was deemed to be totally unsafe and he had to take my keys and impound the vehicle .he took me to the lift and showed me first the passenger side rail of the frame.in front of the rear tire there was a fist sized hole in the frame as well as an adjoining crack that extended entirely through the steel member from top to bottom. it was basically split in 2 pieces. he then reached in where the hole was and pulled a 8 to 12 inch multilayered sheet of rust off the frame. the driver side was in very similar condition but the crack was just short or going all the way from top to bottom.i told the service manager ( dean carnes-bennett toyota, alllentown, pa.-610 437-6711) this was my business vehicle. he told me that all the dealer could do was provide me a rental car as they had no rental trucks. i am now driving a toyota corolla that is unsuited for my needs. he said that anything further would have to go toyota directly. i called and filed a case an reiterated i needed a rental truck. i got a call a couple days later from the toyota rep. assigned to the case. she told me that the case was put on escalated status because of the severity of the problem. i have no rental truck and no word from toyota. they said the problem will be handled on a case by case basis. inspection by the district mgr and policy from upper management is needed. *tr

I took my 2000 toyota tundra to get new tires and the vehicle broke in half on the lift. i had brought a live stock trailer that day so i could pick up my 1500pound grain order so i can feed my animals,i did not get to do this. i frequently drive long distances at 50 mph or faster for my business with weight in the rear. there has been a claim filed with toyota i still have no answers as to what and when anything will be done. in the mean time im having difficulty performing the chores that need to be done without a vehicle that works to my needs. toyota did rent me a vehicle at their expense. i'm afraid to drive anything now for fear it too could be faulty im lucky i'm not dead and my 9 year old child too. *tr

My 2000 toyota tundra has huge holes in the frame. i have been waiting on toyota for over five months since i filed a complaint with them. i am told that i am on a case by case basis. meanwhile, my truck is getting worse to point i am afraid to drive it. i have a hole the size of a 50 cent piece in one place, and other hole all over the frame. it is not just the cross member in the rear as their recall stated, it is the whole frame. the frame is literally coming apart in layers in places. i live in ohio and the body of the truck has no rust and has been primarily garage kept. this tundra is much worse than the 2000 tacoma of my son's that was recalled and paid 150% of value, yet they act like this problem is nothing. the service dept. manager said it was one of the worst he had seen at his dealership. field tech tried to play games with me of just what was the problem. i am an insurance claims analyst and have inspected cars for over 16 yrs, so i did not appreciate his tactic. customer service at toyota has been nothing but rude. i told them if my frame broke causing damage or injury to anyone, toyota would be held accountable. nothing is being done by toyota on this issue. the truck value is greatly decreased as dealers are aware of this issue and i could not sell this truck given the frame condition. any kick start to get toyota to step up and take care of this issue would be appreciated. *tr

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) this is regarding my 2000 toyota tundra, [xxx] . i am aware that the ntsb has issued a bulletin (#09v444000) concerning rusty frames on my model and year, specifically regarding the cross member holding the spare tire. that cross member on my truck is solid, however the spring mount portion of the frame has completely disintegrated and broken. fortunately it broke while i was leaving my driveway, not while i was doing 65 mph on the highway. the local dealer service manager and an area toyota representative have examined the vehicle. they have concluded that it is out of warranty and that toyota is not liable. toyota has already accepted responsibility for rust problems on the 2000 tacoma frames. i made them aware of the rust issues on my truck when the tacoma recalls were first announced, but they have insisted that it is not a problem. i believe that the rear suspension falling out from under my truck is a safety hazard and should be their problem. *tr

A co-worker sent me a rear photo of my 2000 toyota tundra in the parking lot showing the spare on the ground. after removing the spare i notice that the cross member which supports the spare was broken in half. where the cross member attaches to the frame has rotted away. the driver side shock is broken and detached. the exhaust is also questionable as it is attached to the broken cross member. rear brake line and proportioning valve are also in question as they also are partially supported by the cross member and rotting frame. as of t his writing i have a case number assigned with toyota but like many others we are getting nothing but lip service. my local dealer has determined that my truck is unsafe to drive and has yet to do anything to remedy the situation. i can provide further details and photos upon request. *tr

Brake failure on 2000 toyota tundra caused by excessive rusting of frame, cross member and proportioning valve mount. lost all braking ability when exiting i89 southbound exit 18 in georgia, vermont. narrowly avoided a vehicle stopped in front of me and another oncoming vehicle at the intersection of i89 and us route 7. i reported this event to toyota that same morning and was issued a case number. advised to contact local toyota dealer for immediate inspection. inspection revealed conditions listed at beginning of this statement and significant flaking/loss of metal on main rails of frame. told by service manager that truck could not be repaired without inspection of vehicle by toyota regional rep. the following monday (brake failure occurred on the preceding friday), local dealer provided me with a rental vehicle and advised me that the end decision on my vehicle was to replace the cross member and proportioning valve. vehicle had not been inspected by regional rep. and service manager could not provide me with an estimated completion date for the work due to lack of a part number for the cross member. i learned of prior knowledge of this problem by toyota and others when researching on the internet. also learned that recall notices were to be mailed nlt end of january 2010 (toyota statement). toyota rep admitted this was not done and recall letters have still not gone out to owners. *tr

I have a 2000 toyota tundra that suffers from excessive frame rot primarily in the front portion of the truck. my fear is an immanent and premature failure of newyork state mandated safety inspection, heaven forbid a frontend collision in which my wife who is the primary operator of this vehicle, could be severely injured or killed. i have read and heard of some dealerships replacing whole tundra frames as well as simply buying back the vehicles from the current owners. i visited a nearby toyota dealer who angrily informed me that no such problem exists yet when i contact other toyota dealerships, they advise me that they are aware of the issue. i am looking for the truth concerning this matter. it's been a good truck otherwise, but i am not going to potentially jeopardize the lives of my family simply because a manufacture won't take responsibility for their production shortcuts, oversights and mistakes. at this current time in toyota history, it's time to fix the recurring problems and shortfalls they have been trying for years to slide by the consumer before the consumer dictates their fatal demise as a company. *tr

I noticed excessive rust decay on the frame and cross-members while removing my hitch ball last fall. rust was cascading out from above the spare tire and along the frame and cross-members. later i researched the issue and determined there was a recall from toyota. i had changed addresses since my original purchase on june 13, 2000 and had never received a written notice from toyota. i went to the dealer in january to have the frame inspected and the spare tire moved to the truck bed. i was told toyota would have the fix to the dealers by the end of january. i called back and was told no fix yet. end of february - still no fix. i inspected the frame today. there is total loss at the rear passenger corner of the rear cross-member; other three corners appear significantly rusted. all cross-members and frames reveal significant loss from rust - approximately 10-25% of original frame thickness. also extensive rust on both upper shock mounts and on shocks themselves. rust on frame extends all the way forward to the front of the truck. this vehicle only has 81,000 miles on it and used primarily in the summer to tow our camper - exposure to road salt has been minimal, yet the damage is frightful.*tr

I took my 2000 toyota tundra to my mechanic in january 2010 and he noticed that the frame was very rusty in the rear. i looked up the tundra in the recall notice and found that there was a recall for the cross member holding the spare tire. i took the truck to my local toyota dealer and they found that the cross member was ok, but the frame was perforated by rust in the left rear. the dealer stated that the frame probably had 1 year left in it but that they could not pass it for state inspection in its current condition. i called toyota and requested information on a repair for this problem. they told me that the cross member issue was the only issue outstanding and that they would not do anything for me at this time. unfortunately, i am left with a worthless vehicle and as i use it for towing it is even more susceptible to failure of the frame. *tr

2000 toyota tundra access cab - i own a 2000 tundra with 103,000 miles and live in southern maine. i was in at the dealer (berlin city - portland) for a 4wd problem in january 2010 and was informed there was a hole in my frame forward of the left front tire. dealer suggested that i call toyota and establish a case #, which i did. the boston regional office [xxx] called me and set up an appointment to have the frame inspected by a technician, which was done on january 28th. i placed several calls to the boston office for feedback on the frame inspection, but none were returned. yesterday i called toyota (california?) and discussed the case with the case manager [xxx]. [xxx] informed me that my case has been forwarded to a group of managers within toyota who are evaluating the tundra frame rust issue. i asked [xxx] if i was going to be given the option of a new frame or a buyout - she said that the case-by-case evaluations have been ended and that the next step is for toyota to evaluate the issue as a whole. [xxx] was unable to give me a timeframe for resolution. meanwhile, i have a state inspection coming up in april - if the frame fails and toyota hasn't come through, i'm without a vehicle. as there have been verified incidents of frame cross members holding the spare tires failing and dropping the tire on the road and other mechanical failures due to the extreme rusting caused by sub-standard steel used in the frames, it is imperative that the dot and nhtsa immediately require a comprehensive re-call of these vehicles. *tr

Based on news articles in december 2009 regarding severe rusting and deterioration of the support frames of 2000 and 2001 toyota tundra pick-up truck i took my vehicle to motor world toyota in wilkes-barre, pa in january 2010. the service technicians performed an inspection and did, in fact find significant rusting on the frame, cross members and attachment points. i was told that my emergency brakes mechanism was severely rusted and did not function properly. i was told that it would cost approximately $150.00 to repair the brake. as i was expecting to be notified by toyota that a re-call was taking place and elected to delay the repair to see if it would be part of the recall of the rusted frames. as of today, 23 february 2010 i have not heard anything regarding a re-call of 2000-2001 toyota tundra pick-up trucks. as there have been verified incidents of frame cross members holding the spare tires failing and dropping the tire on the road and other mechanical failures due to the extreme rusting caused by sub-standard steel used in the frames, it is imperative that the dot and nhtsa immediately require a comprehensive re-call of these vehicles. *tr

On 2-03-10 while driving vehicle slowly through a parking lot i traversed a speed bump and heard aloud banging noise from the rear of vehicle. upon inspection, the rear leaf spring shackle apparently disintegrated from rust and separated from the frame[.as of that date i had yet to receive nhtsa campaign number 09v444000 from the mfg.].i proceeded to the dealership the next day and upon inspection they deemed the truck unsafe to operate and they indicated that the main frame rusted and there were holes through the rear frame. dealership took photos and indicated they would forwarded all information to corporate office. i was provided a vehicle for transportation until corporate makes a decision. almost three wks. and no decision, and according to corp. office no time table to resolve.please note, i advised corp. office of my safety concerns on 6-19-2009, regarding severe rusting condition of frame. they assigned a case # and stated no action to date on the 2000 tundra's. i consider myself fortunate this safety issue did not cause a serious accident, and i feel very strongly that it is time for nhtsa to further investigate these safety issues. *tr

2000 toyota tundra sr5, excessive frame rotting/rusting of entire under carriage, frame is flaking away over the rear wheels and entire under carriage, as a result of which my safety and that of my family are at risk, and now the market value of the truck i bought new is worthless. i am requesting a total replacement of my vehicle. i have owned the truck since new some 10 years and the body is in perfect condition, but the frame is totally rusting away. i am requesting nothing short of a new tundra in its place, there must be some justice for a company that was fully aware of this problem before they sold theses vehicle,s, i own (2) other toyota, as well, a 2002 that i purchased for my daughter, and that vehicle also suffers from a similar problem. *tr

My 2000 toyota tundra has 5 rust holes in the frame, which were found by a mechanic who was fixing a broken spring. i am unable to get this truck inspected and it has less than 100,000 miles on it! i was told by the local toyota dealership to bring the truck in and that day a toyota corporation service representative inspected the truck, took photos, filed a report and said it was unsafe to drive. toyota corporation provided me with a rental car which they were paying for. one month later the person from toyota corp. called me and told me i had to return the rental vehicle that day and pick up my truck (that was unsafe for the road) or they were going to begin charging me for the rental vehicle and start charging me storage on my tundra. toyota corporation offered me $2500 towards a new toyota truck due to my rusty tundra. seriously!! when are these trucks going to be recalled and owners be offered a reasonable compensation? my local toyota dealer service representative told me to hire a lawyer and have them call toyota corporation to represent me in getting both a new suspension and frame put on my truck or some sort of settlement. i am awaiting a response from toyota. *tr

----- original message ----- to: bill wise ; toyota@consumer-follow-up.com sent: wednesday, february 10, 2010 8:53 am subject: fw: website inquiry it turns out that i have to replaced another left front axle, front axle seals, bearings, plus lower ball jointseals, again, because the bearing and the booth (seals) leaks which makes the bearings to dry out and broke loose and landed right on top of the lower ball joint which causes the damaged to the lower ball joint, too. according to my memory, i had replaced the whole entire front end drive axle, and both front lower ball joint in 2006 and they were not installed correctly, so i did took it to your toyota's shop in order to get it fixed right and. with parts and labors, i've paid you guys almost $2,000.00, which only last me little over 3 years and then it's start over again. this is the second time, that the left front driver axle and it's bearing gave out on me, and luckily, both times, i have noticed the noise and pulled over in to the parking lot in time, other wise, my truck causes the accident andor some one could have got hurt or kill. this meant, i have to spend another $2,000.00 more dollars just to have the same thing done to my truck again. i know i can save money by having my friends to help me fix, but i don't want to take that chance because this is the second times the left driver side (front axle) went out on me and i don't want to be responsible for hurting anyone or might be worst. please advise. according to bills of service from toyota dealer shop: c: perform 4-wheel alignment aln had to readjust entire front end (front axle) d: rear axle seals leaking, price repair axle replaced both rear axle seals/bearings. replaced left front axle bearing.resurfaced *tr

I own a 2000 toyota tundra 4x4 truck. there is a major safety issue with the frame on this vehicle. the frame has rusted to the point of having holes. i am concerned about the safety of driving this vehicle, as frame failure may occur and cause injury or loss of life. i have contacted toyota about this problem and was told there was nothing that would be done about the problem. in recent past, toyota recalled the tacoma for a similar problem. i would like for this problem to be addressed by toyota and corrected in an appropriate manner. *tr

I own a 2000 toyota tundra. the vehicle was recently at the toyota dealership in middletown, ct. they inspected my vehicle and told me that there was an 8 inch hole in the frame caused by excessive rust, and that the vehicle was no longer safe to drive. they recommended i call toyota to let them know about the problem and to see what/if they would do anything to help me. i tried to reach them by phone, but i was on hold for 1 hour and 45 minutes and never managed to get through. when i tried to call today, the call was not accepted due to high call volumes. i sent an email two days ago and have not had a response other than an automated one. i purchased the vehicle in november of 2007 for $10, 300 and it had 133,000 miles on it. it currently has 143,000 miles on it. i am writing to the nhtsa because in conducting some research online i see that other people are having a similar problem and i was wondering if there was anything your agency could do to pressure toyota to compensate owners or initiate a recall to get these unsafe vehicles fixed or off of the road. the current recall for the rear cross member which holds the spare tire is not adequate because it does not address frame rot. by the way, my spare tire broke away and was hanging from the suspension wire just 2 inches off of the road while i was pulling a trailer this past august. i was very lucky to have discovered it before it fell completely. *tr

I was driving 35 mph down a smooth street in austin, tx. in my 2000 tundra pickup truck. the entire right wheel assembly fell off causing $3000 damage to my truck. the day prior, i was driving in the country at 70 mph, within the speed limit. i had 1000 lbs. of grain in my truck. if the wheel had come off that day, i would likely have been seriously injured. i contacted toyota customer service and was told: you are out of warranty and there is nothing we can do. the truck had 56 000 mi. on it and was truly out of warranty. this event was so significant, i felt that some acknowledgement and remedy should have been offered. if there are other tundras out there, 1999 onward, this represents a very big potential hazard. i got no response from the dealer either. when i suggested to the toyota customer service representative that i could have been killed or seriously injured by this, she simply said it is out of warranty. i suggested that toyota did not care about their customers and was told it is out of warranty. i suspect that there are other tundras whose wheels have fallen off. apparently the problem is an l bracket that was made of two pieces of steel, instead of produced as one single piece. *tr

I own a 2000 toyota tundra. yesterday i was checking my tires and gasped in absolute disbelief. my frame behind my axle was broken in 2 places. i was about 100 miles from my house so i drove to town cautiously and went to see my family mechanic. he couldn't believe what he saw. pointing out the 2 spots where the frame had corroded so bad that it snapped , he also notice that it looked cracked behind the spot it was broken, and was developing a crack over the axle. i went home and immediately called toyota of north america and my local toyota dealership. i received a case number and i am waiting for someone to call me back. i also was researching and found out that the frames were made in the same place as the recalled tacoma frames were made. so it is obvious just by reading on this site along with many others that toyota has a major problem on the horizon. these trucks need to be recalled and offer the same thing as the tacoma owners were getting. i realize that another recall would kill toyota but that is better than someone's spare tire to fall off, or there brake line to rust away ( mine did over the summer ), or have the frame collapse and cause a major accident on our roadways. tundra owners must come together and push for this recall to happen before something tragic happens. *tr

Defect: 2000 toyota tundra rusting frame. vehicle purchased new in 2000 and purchased rust proofing package. frame rust was noticed in 2004 and returned to rust proofing vendor for warranty. was told that it was a problem with the frame and to go back to toyota. toyota at the time was recalling tacoma's for a rusting frame problem. toyota tundra's have not been recalled, but toyota will arrange inspection and will fix with a gel application (when available) if rusting is present. we feel they should handle this problem with a recall and offer the customer the same options as for the tacoma recall: if there is no rust, automatically extend warranty to 15 years, if there is rust, the frames are replaced at no cost to the consumer or toyota would buy back the truck at 150 percent of the high kelly blue book value. my truck has under 80,000 miles on it and i don't feel this problem will go away anytime soon. rust is falling off the truck frame staining the garage floor and no matter how much gel they put on, it will not last. because i was pro-active in scraping off the rust and applying rust resistor myself (because toyota refused to do anything for me in 2004), i have deterred the frame from rusting through at this time. however, from a safety standpoint and due to the fact that toyota had problems with the tacoma, i feel they should be held accountable for the defect in the frame material for the tundra. *tr

While washing the underside of my 2000 toyota tundra in a commercial self-service car wash numerous pieces of severely rusted flakes of steel came off my frame. the largest pieces were the size of a motorcycle license plate. these pieces came off from the main fore and aft frame members forward of the back tires. upon further inspection i noticed that not only the aforementioned main frame members were severely rusted but that the cross-member frame pieces were also very rusted. i am concerned that the integrity of the frame has been compromised by this severe rusting. *tr

I had to replace my power steering rack due to rust. this was done in july of 2008. when the service tech (actually all in shop) looked at it, they said they had never seen anything like it. the part was literally crumbling in their hands. now in nov. of 2009, i read that toyota is saying that this truck did not receive the proper rust protection when built. i am a long standing toyota owner. this i hoped to handled in a way to make customers satisfied. today i took my tundra (limited 4x4 access cab) to the local dealer (byers in delaware, oh) where it was purchased. they inspected the truck and simply told me it passed the perforation inspection. when i asked about the details, they repeated it passed. as i had read where other owners were losing their spare tire, i asked if the spare was removed for the inspection. the service manager had to ask the tech. the reply was i looked around and through it and 'it' passed. overall, the rust inspection was graded against a simple multi-point inspection report. there was no specific mention of the frame, steering rack, or cross member. one last time i asked about what would happen next as i thought toyota was offering a corrosion treatment. all i was told was it passed. i left not feeling happy or safe. toyota and this dealership needs to focus on their customers. i have reviewed the frame problem on nhtsa, and found several steering rack complaints filed. i believe that the frame is only the beginning of the is rust problem, and that the steering rack and other parts should be reviewed. *tr

Abnormal frame rust on 2000 toyota tundra. upon having a sprayed in bedliner installed to further enhance/preserve our vehicle the installation company advised us they noted a severe amount of frame rust, that was not consistent with the condition of the rest of vehicle. they were under the vehicle for a fire watch during the installation of two welded patches to the truck bed to eliminate rust in the bed before it spread. upon further investigation the frame is indeed inconsistently rusted in comparison to the remainder of the vehicle. this includes substantial rusting of the support for the fuel tank which is a safety concern. the local dealer suggested that based on the year of the vehicle the frame may have been coated in ohio where there was a problem with the proper amount coating being applied, but that they were not doing anything at this time for customers.  When i purchased a 2000 toyota tundra 2 years ago, my mechanic checked it out and found it mechanically sound with minimal frame rust. two weeks ago i brought it to the same mechanic for my 3,000 mile oil change. it now has 73,000 miles on it. he discovered the frame was badly rusted. he checked the internet and told me there might be a recall of the 2000 and 2001 toyota tundra. he suggested that i bring it to a toyota dealer. i did so and was advised that the truck had badly rusted frame rails and one cross frame bracket was totally rusted through. the dealer advised me to contact toyota corporate. i did so, and was told that there was no recall and, therefore, there was nothing they could do for me. worthy of note is that my second vehicle, a 1999 plymouth voyager with 89,000 miles, has insignificant rust. *tr

Our 2000 toyota tundra (with ~60,000 miles) was parked it in my relatives driveway on 10/18/09. when we went to drive it out of my aunt's driveway on 10/18/09, she started yelling, stop, something is leaking! looked at the front drivers brake line and saw a hole that was pushing out brake fluid with high pressure when brakes were applied. thankfully, the brakes failed in the driveway instead of on route 2 between albany, ny and massachusetts. if they failed on the drive, my husband would likely have been killed on the mountainous road. carefully drove the truck to the nearest dealership, lia toyota of colonie on 10/18/09. told them about the broken brake line and asked for a frame inspection to be done first, as we did not want to put money into the truck if the frame had issues. on 10/26/09, we finally received an estimate for the work and documentation stating the frame has normal rust wear for the age of the vehicle and the frame has no perforation at this time. the estimate said that the front driver brake lines and junction box were rusted through. the emergency brake pivot was rusted & seized on both sides and completely inoperable, and the front sway bar link was rusted through. since we were told by lia toyota of colonie that the frame was intact (no holes) we authorized the work. we picked up our repaired tundra on 11/02/09 and kept the old parts. the emergency brake did not hold the car and needed adjustment, so the following day, 11/3/09, we took it to our local dealer, colonial toyota of milford. we asked for a brake adjustment and a frame inspection. the next day, 11/04/09, i received a call from colonial toyota, saying that our tundra frame had holes in it and we should not put another dime into it and it is not safe to drive. colonial service took pictures of the perforated frame and called the toyota reps, who came and looked at our tundra. on 11/10/09, we were notified that toyota declined to repair or replace our frame. *tr

2000 toyota tundra frame rust safety issue i could not have the front bumper replaced due to extensive rust damage. i contacted toyota and they recommended a frame inspection and charged $98 dollars to tell me that there was perforated rust at 9 different inspection point and there was nothing that they could do about it. i believe that this vehicle is unsafe to drive and i contacted the toyota experience and then opened a case only to tell me there was nothing that they could do about it. i believe since this is the same manufacturing defect that they admitted to on the tacoma they should be held accountable for it on the tundra. *tr

(1). i purchased a new 2000 toyota tundra extended cab limited at price toyota in delaware. in february 2009 i observed rust through of bracket from bed to frame visible through rear wheel well. requested that my wife report this to liberty toyota in nj during routine 5000 mile oil change. she was told that this was not a problem. (2). in september 2009 truck was again taken to liberty toyota for 5000 mile oil change, purchase of 5 new tires and alignment. liberty toyota service told my wife that the truck was rusted to the point where they could no longer align the vehicle and no service was performed. liberty took photos of the underside of the truck and transmitted them to toyota. approximately two weeks later liberty told my wife that toyota's position was that because of the age and mileage (9 years and 110,000 miles ) that they would do nothing to resolve this issue. (3). in late september 2009 i purchased a 2006 toyota tundra crew cab 4 door tundra limited as a replacement vehicle for my wife a toyota runnemead, nj. on that same occasion the 2000 tundra was put on lift and inspected with a powerful light. observed various rust through of brackets and at least one fist sized hole through the frame. this was witnessed by the toyota runnemeade sales person, general manager, sales manager, and service manager. all agreed that this was worst case of rust they had seen, and were of the opinion that the truck was not safe to operate. (4). in october 2009 i contacted toyota customer service and received a case number. a few days later i again contacted toyota customer service and was told that toyota is studying the problem. this sounded like a stall tactic and gave me little hope for any voluntary positive action from toyota. as of today 11 november 2009 i have had no further contact from toyota.  I have a 2000 toyota tundra. it suffers from severe frame and undercarriage rust. the rust and metal is literally flaking off in large sheets. my steering fluid lines corroded and burst causing loss of fluid and power steering at highway speeds last fall. this spring my rusted brake line burst and caused complete loss of brakes. my wife was coming out of a business onto a four lane highway. she had to drive it into a ditch to avert a t-bone collision on the main highway. i can hear unexplainable sounds from the rear frame area and my current mechanic tells me that the vehicle will not be inspected when due. i understand others have had similar problems and i want to assure you that there are many more out there just like me. the vehicle has otherwise been mechanically sound. toyota has no recall notice and i have gone through there process before to no avail. there needs to be a recall insisted upon. *tr

Our 2000 toyota tundra has continuously let us down in several areas such as; brake vibration, and the emergency brake cam arms are rusted so when releasing the parking brake, the shoes stay engaged, dragging on the brake pads causing warped drums. we have had a cracked exhaust manifold since 35k miles, transmission failure at 63k miles, continuous oxygen sensors issues (including two that fell out), broken sway bar mount, rusted tailgate mounts, and now the extreme frame rust. the truck is being eaten away by rust, causing parts to break and even fall off. now the extensive frame rust has caused parts to fall off, and break. the latest is the passenger side spring shackle mount that was cracked and flexing, and now has completely broken off allowing the spring to rest along the underside of the body. we are very disappointed because this truck has been completely unreliable; it will not pass inspection and is now completely unsafe to drive. *tr

Last year i was driving my 2000 toyota tundra and heard a thud from the rear of my truck. i pulled over to discover my spare tire hanging from the supporting cable. apparently, the support frame for the spare tire disintegrated from corrosion to the point where it could no longer support the weight of the spare tire and failed. luckily the cable did not fail and kept the spare attached with the truck. after further investigation, heavy corrosion was observed throughout the frame. this failure has only occurred once. a mechanic offered to attach a piece of angle aluminum as a support so i could at least stow my spare tire for emergencies. due to the condition of the existing support frame, this angle aluminum support is only temporary. further overall deterioration of the frame is a significant safety concern for myself and others on the road. photos are available upon request. *tr

I found holes in the frame of my 2000 toyota tundra in 2007 and immediately brought it to toyota. they said it wasn't covered under warranty but to watch it and it wasn't a big issue to have a little rust (this was during the tacoma recall). sept of 2008 i brought the truck in again since the rust was even worse they said again not a big issue but to keep an eye on it. in september of 2009 i was changing the oil and i saw that the front sway bar mount had totally rusted through and had fallen off - immediately called toyota corp - they said there is nothing they can do. my issue is that they have told me all along that this is not a big deal! but now its a safety issue ! it has since taken out a power steering line and there is a brake line that has been ruptured as well. now that the truck is worth nothing i want toyota to help me out. they told me it wasn't an issue, i believed them, now my truck is worthless! and the truck only has 130000 miles on it! this is nothing compared to all my other toyota trucks... *tr

I have a 2000 toyota tundra that has a rusted out and cracked rear cross member in the frame. the frame member holds the spare tire in place and while changing rear shocks at the end of september i noticed how rusted the cross member and the rest of the frame is, what is left of the cross member is cracking so i no longer have the tire under the truck. a mechanic verified this while he was under the truck replacing the power steering rack that also rusted out .my wife lost the power steering while driving the truck. the mechanic told me he had never seen the power steering rack rust out or that much rust on the frame of a truck with 88,000 on it and that the frame would have to be welded to make it right. i have filed a claim with toyota ( claim # 0910135009 ) and was told they are looking in to it. from what i've herd and read im not the only one with this problem.i would hate to see what would happen if someone lost their spare tire while going down the highway. i have heard that 2000 and 2001 tundra frames were made in the same place the tacomas were and i did receive a recall on my previous truck a 2000 tacoma. thank you for your time. *tr

Toyota tundra 2000 - in may of this year the vehicle was to have annual state inspection and did not pass due to extreme rusting condition of the frame. mechanic said he could easily put a hammer through the frame it was in such bad condition and advised that the hitch was not safe to use. i bought this truck new and wanted to keep it. we had only 158,000 miles on it at the time of inspection so decided to have plates welded onto the frame in several places, had to have new brake lines installed and the entire underneath of the truck undercoated. this cost me $1,087.29 and took 5 days to complete. apparently the steel used in this truck was inferior and i believe the least toyota should do is replace the frame (as they have done for the tacoma which also had the same problem). i had no luck in dealing with toyota on this as there was no recall. there absolutely should be one. this is a major defect in a motor vehicle. *tr

I own a 2000 toyota tundra, which i feel is unsafe for the road due to excessive frame rot. this truck's frame has to be the worst case of frame rot i've ever seen. far worse than i've seen on any toyota tacoma that was recalled. but, for some reason toyota doesn't seem to want to step up to the plate on these trucks. unfortunately for me, i won't be able to pass a state inspection at the end of this month. so that leaves me making payments on a truck that i can not drive. over this past summer, i needed to travel 500 mile round trips for several weekends for medical reasons. knowing that i had some underbody clunks going on, i figured i'd investigate prior to making these many trips. i found that the upper shock towers were no longer attached to the frame of the truck, and they were the cause of my clunk. i decided to pull off the bed of the truck to get a better access to these rotted spots. once the bed was removed, i was able to see that my problem was far worse than i imagined. i found 21 rot holes just in the six foot section of frame under the bed. i found that my shock towers had pulled away from their frame mounts due to rust. the scariest find was that the cross member that supports the spare tire had three out of the four mounting corners completely rotted off. here's where i get concerned about the safety of people traveling behind me. could you imagine if this cross member and spare rim/tire fell off at highway speeds? this is the point where i contact my local toyota dealer. the service advisor tells me that toyota isn't doing anything for me at this time, and to remain patient. frame rot in 8 years!!! are you kidding me? knowing that i have all this weekly travel ahead of me, i asked him if it would hurt my future chances of a recall if i attempted to apply some temporary welds to the frame to feel a little safer in my travels. he said that the repairs would be fine. some of those repairs did not hold due to poor metal. what more can i do? help!! *tr

Same problem as current action #pe09049. frame member holding spare tire in 2000 toyota tundra rotted away. spare tire appeared to be hanging low while truck was parked in the driveway. i went to investigate and when i shook tire to attempt to determine cause the spare tire came crashing to the ground, still attached to part of the frame. brought truck to toyota dealer the next day to further investigate and they notified me that the whole frame was rusted and in need of replacement, and unsafe to drive until that is done. contacted toyota's national office, and they advised me that at this time there is no action to be taken on the tundra, but advised me that they had received many complaints on the same issue, and further explained that the same issue existed in earlier model year tacomas. they explained that is currently under executive review and if any further action was taken in the future i would be notified. truck is in otherwise very good shape, but is now unusable. *tr updated 03/25/10 *bf

I own a 2000 toyota tundra, and have for the past few years watched as the frame of my truck slowly disentegrates to what is now very thin metal, mainly (but not limited to) from the rear of the cab rearward, it appears to be severe flaky rust that comes off in chunks in some spots. i have even gone so far as to install a safety tether for my spare tire as the bracket for the spare looks as if its going to break off. comparing this issue with other makes and models in my geographic area, i believe that this rust / rot is abnormal for the age of the truck. i am uneasy using this truck for which it was designed, (i.e. towing my camper, or bed full of mulch). this issue also prevents me from selling the truck, who wants a truck with a rotted frame !! i shudder to think how this truck were to perform if i were ever in an accident. help !! *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 toyota tundra/sr5. in september of 2008 the vehicle rear and front frame began corroding, which caused the power steering fluid to leak. he contacted the manufacturer, and a representative stated that there may be a recall in the future for the failure. however he made some replacements under and around the vehicles bed area. recently he noticed the check engine oil light illuminated on the instrument control panel. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for an oil change. the dealer concluded that they could not change the oil because the steering rack belts, cross members and the entire frame was corroded. he then recommended that he discontinue vehicle operation as a safety precaution.. the failure mileage was 51,000. the current mileage was 53,000.

My rear left leaf spring shackle rusted out and broke on my 2000 tundra . i brought it to my mechanic for repair and as he was replacing the right side he called me to show a large 6 in crack in the frame just above where the tow hitch attaches. hard to see once the shackle was put back on. he told me the truck may become unsafe to drive and that i cannot tow anything . he pointed out, where the rear section of the frame is flaking off rust. *tr

I have a 2000 toyota tundra, access cab, 4wd truck with 160,000 +/- miles. i purchased the vehicle used from the original owner who lived in the akron, ohio area. i have noticed significant section loss to frame members, cross members and cab supports. presently, the frame is completely perforated on the underneath side near the passenger front door. additionally, the passenger middle cab support has corroded completely off, the front drivers cab support has rusted completely away and the front bumper/impact guard has completely rusted off. i have contacted the dealership and corporate headquarters two separate times. they have responded promptly all three times; however, the issue is still be investigated at the executive level. additionally, i have had to replace one of the rear brake lines and the fuel tank strap due to failure from corrosion. the vehicle is in excellent mechanical shape and body is nearly flawless. i have photos available. the frame seems to be most severely deteriorated at the boxed section near the transmission support cross member. under normal driving conditions (i.e. not towing/no payload) this would likely be the point in the structure associated with maximum bending. due to the box design- it is impossible to inspect the total amount of section loss; although, as previously stated the passenger side rail is completely perforated along the underneath side. i can attest that my father has a 2002 toyota tundra with no deterioration. it is unclear if toyota used a different treatment for the later model vehicles. most alarming to me, is how quickly y the corrosion has progressed. since last september, the corrosion has progressed from a surface rust appearance into bubbling and complete deterioration. *tr

I brought my 2000 toyota tundra in to be serviced at my toyota dealership. it was determined then to be unsafe to drive. the dealership determined that the frame is rusted out and the leaf spring has penetrated the truck bed. this truck has regularly been maintained at the dealership where it was purchased. additional rust proofing was purchased at the time of purchase. other than the rusting frame, the vehicle works very well. now it cannot be driven and there is no suggestion that it can be fixed. i am aware that toyota has had the same problem with the tacoma model and that toyota has reimbursed tacoma owners one and one half times the blue book value. i am also aware that toyota acknowledges the problem with the tundra. unfortunately, they are unresponsive to me. i am currently renting a vehicle in order to get to work as i await the next step in this process. the dealership has told me to leave the vehicle with them as it is unsafe and unfit to drive. there seems to be some inequity in this situation. i have been encouraged to report this to you.

*tr

I own a year 2000 toyota tundra, which i purchased as a new vehicle. the truck has approximately 81,000 miles on it and has been garaged for the entire time that i have owned it. the underside of the vehicle has shown extreme rusting, especially the brake system which has failed twice due to corrosion. during the most recent brake failure i could not stop the vehicle while descending a hill and downshifted the transmission to slow down. additional rust problems have included replacement of all front and rear brake lines, including the rear proportioning valve. the front rotor caliper pins have also seized due to rust. the emergency brake seized due to rust and was not operational. both sway bar links and bushings failed due to rust. the heat shields around the muffler and catalytic converter rusted off the tundra and may have posed significant safety hazards to drivers traveling behind me on the highway. these corrosion problems were reported to toyota and the truck was inspected by a district service representative for frame rusting only (summer 2009). the other problems with the braking system, etc. were completely ignored, even though i brought this to the service rep's attention. in addition, the district manager was contacted several months ago and has not addressed my concerns. all the above problems above were repaired at the local toyota dealer, whose mechanics commented that the underside of the truck was severely corroded. also, the repairs are documented in my vehicle's service history. *tr

I recently noticed extensive frame rust on my toyota tundra. on september 28, 2009, i took it to the toyota dealer for a frame inspection. the inspection found significant rust and as a result of the inspection, the dealer determined that the vehicle is unsafe to drive. the dealer said there was nothing they could do about it since there had been no recall program or other action by toyota. the dealer did tell me that toyota did establish a program for the tacoma. in fact, the dealer used a worksheet form the tacoma program to note the location and extent of corrosion. on september 29, 2009, i called toyota customer service about the problem but they did not offer any relief or remedy. i was given a case number of 0909141286 and told that a case manager would call me. on september 30, 2009, a toyota case manager called me but said at this time there was nothing they could do. i was told that toyota had received similar complaints from other owners and was investigating the issue. i was told that there was nothing in place to assist me with my problem, even though a dealer had already inspected my vehicle and declared that it was unsafe to drive due to the rust problem. i was told that there is no date by which the toyota investigation will be completed and there was nothing they can do for me in the meantime. i need my truck for transportation now. i am requesting the assistance of the nhtsa to compel toyota to provide a remedy to me for this safety defect in the vehicle. *tr

Toyota 2000 tundra--extensive rust on the entire frame. large thick flakes of rust have been falling off for two years. significant rust-through perforation in frame. clearly undermines structural integrity of the frame of the truck. it has had the underbody washed weekly since it was new. it has 72000 original one-owner miles. i don't feel safe driving this car because in the event of an impact the frame would crumble. currently there are holes in the frame that you could stick several fingers through. *tr

Failure of frame in 2000 toyota tundra. first noticed large amounts of metal flaking off in early 2007. notified toyota and they did nothing. spare tire fell off bottom of truck in my driveway. noticed a crack in the frame and took it to be welded, and was told that my spare tire crossmember could come off in its entirety, that two of my cab mounts were no longer intact and that the others were hanging by a thread, and that the frame could not be welded in a way that would be safe for use, as there were portions without enough metal remaining to weld to. notified toyota again (feb 2009) and was told that they had no program in place for the tundra. problems began in 2007. rot ongoing. truck is a total hazard because of the frame, and (uselessly enough) utterly functional in every other way. pictures and the whole story at www.my2000tundra.com - i didn't know what else to do, so i made a website to share the information & pictures. *tr

Extreme rust on the frame and brake lines of my 2000 toyota tundra caused the brake line to leak, resulting in loss of braking ability. i was fortunate enough to not be in an accident and at my cost had the brake line replaced the very next day. this cost me around 120.00. i was also informed by the repair shop that the whole frame of my 2000 tundra is badly damaged by rust and could be considered unsafe as there are parts near to the point of rusting through and falling off. the body and interior of this truck is in excellent shape and its mechanically sound at just over 82,000 miles. however i'm afraid at this point that more costly repairs could follow if my vehicle does not become completely unworthy to be on the road due to frame damage caused by the rust. i contacted the toyota experience helpline and spoke to a case manager and was informed that toyota is already looking into this issue but there is no action on toyotas part to make this right as of yet. until then i have an unsafe vehicle that i am paying for while in anticipation of future problems and repairs to pay for as well. *tr

On august 24,2009 i asked my toyota dealer to inspect the frame of my tundra as i felt it was too rusty and i was concerned. they told me it looked fine but they really did not check it well. on saturday the 5th of september 2009 while driving down the road the rear cross member that holds the spare tire completely broke in half from the rust. the spare tire was still attached to the crank that holds it in place. i contacted the toyota dealership and also the toyota customer experience line to file a complaint. this is a severe safety issue as a vehicle behind me could have struck the tire and caused damage at best, or a tire going through a windshield at highway speeds. toyota corporate says they are checking into it but they keep telling me that because it is a 2000 tundra the warranty has expired. safety issues do not expire! the frame is rusting out and toyota is not helping. *tr

My vehicle is a 2000 toyota tundra limited 4x4. this vehicle has almost always been garaged and continues to be my primary mode of winter transportation. it just passed inspection, but i was warned by the inspecting shop that the under body rust is progressing and should be watched closely. the significant amount of frame and associated undercarriage rust, including pieces/chunks coming off, is very disconcerting and leads me to be concerned about a potentially dangerous vehicle failure. a toyota dealer investigation/evaluation (including photos) was performed and results forwarded to toyota corporate offices. *tr

I own a 2000 toyota tundra sr5 extended cab. the frame is in terrible condition due to large chunks of rust falling off it and springs are rusting in the same manner which leaves me fearful for myself and any passengers safety. every time i go far an inspection i hold my breath for passing. i noticed the excessive rusting about two years ago. i have roughly 73,000 miles on this truck and it's been garage kept here in hatfield ma since ownership. *tr

3.on august 20th, 2009 while driving over a railroad track on north ferry street in albany, new york, at slow speed, the passenger side front bottom ball joint broke, causing the wheel to buckle with the bottom of the tire protruding outward. the constant velocity joint then broke at the joint near the transmission and pulled out. 4.the truck stopped immediately on the railroad tracks. these are active railroad tracks. two people were in the car at the time. 5.my wife enlisted the aid of a repair shop right next to the tracks. all of their tow trucks were out on calls, but there was a tractor with a bucket at the shop. they lifted the tundra with the bucket and pulled it off the tracks, denting the front hood in the process. about two minutes later a train went by on the tracks. 6.the truck was towed to northway toyota dealer in latham and inspected. there were multiple and extensive rust caused perforations on the frame. the stabilizer mount on the passenger side was ripped off the frame due to failure caused by rust. it is likely that the mount was off before the ball joint broke and may have been the ultimate cause of the accident. *tr

I have a 2000 toyota tundra. i was recently stopped by another motorist who stated that my spare tire was hanging down under the truck. i looked under the truck to find this was true. i jiggled the tire and it fell completely out from under the truck. the winch assembly was still attached to the wheel, but i can see that the crossmember that the winch would be attached to is completely rotted away. my truck is maintained at a toyota dealer and is current on its annual state inspection. i had never used the spare tire before, so i had never had a chance to see what the crossmember looked like behind the tire. i have closely checked the rest of the frame on the truck and it is in good condition. the rim on the spare tire is painted steel and was in contact with the crossmember since the truck was manufactured, yet the rim is in new condition with no rust. i have looked on line and it seems that many people are having similar problems with the crossmembers on these truck frames. i believe this is a potentialy very dangerous condition for other motorists and tundra truck owners who are unaware of the rust hidden behind their spare tire. if they have never used their spare tire, then they will not be able to see this condition developing. just prior to being stopped by the motorist who alerted me to the problem, i had been on the highway traveling at 65 mph! imagine if the spare tire had fallen out at that speed and was tumbling or bouncing into the path of other motorists! someone could have been seriously injured or killed. i did go to the toyota website and try to make contact. the person who called me back was polite, but seemed to miss the point i was trying to make about this being a possibly serious safety issue. they only stated that toyota accepts no responsibility, that this is probably due to living in the northeast and that repairs are at my own expense. please investigate. i think there may be more tundras like mine. i can supply photos. *tr

2000 toyota tundra sr5 xcab 4x4 has extreme flaking rust all over frame, front bumper to rear. body metal is fine. part of frame is buckling/flexing, front right stabilizer mount has snapped off with nothing to weld to. several weld areas have weakened or let go. problem became noticeable in 2005 (at 60,000 odometer miles). slowly got worse. logged case with toyota in 2008 when frame began to flex. no program to help. severely worse in 2009. updated case with toyota. still no offer of help or remedy, just we are looking into it. no longer able to safely tow, will soon be unable to safely drive. body looks great, but chassis frame is flaking to nothing. *tr

We own a 2000 toyota, in great shape except for the excessive rust/rot of the frame. we have taken it to our trusted auto mechanic who has advised us that the truck should be considered totaled and two separate auto body shops would not even touch it. the frame is cracked in two places, has holes all through it. we have tried to call toyota directly and they are simply telling us that the situation is under investigation and that we should hold tight. at this point, we have been told that the car is dangerous to drive, so we pretty much have a beautiful black lawn ornament. this truck is showing wear on the frame that you would see on a vehicle 3 times it's age. we have been loyal toyota owners for years and have never had an experience like this one. it is putting a bad taste in our mouths for sure. *tr

Took my 2000 toyota tundra truck in to a toyota service center (bayside toyota) for service and to fix power steering leak. according to the toyota technician the leak could not be fix because of excessive rust on the frame, rear, and under body of the truck. the rear parking brakes components seized and rusted ; advised not to use rear parking brakes. the truck was purchased new in april 2000 and has 69,250 miles on it. reported the problem to toyota headquarters and has been assigned a case number. toyota representative said they were looking into this problem however no decision has been made regarding what to do about the tundra reported problems. i have taken pictures of the excessive rust damage. disappointed and frustrated that nothing is being done about this. my truck is not safe and is now parked in my driveway waiting for a decision from toyota. i have purchased new 5 toyotas since 1974 and this is the first time i have encounter a problem like this. i am surprised that toyota has not done anything about this problem. please investigate. my truck would not pass any inspections in its current condition. *tr

I have a 2000 toyota tundra that i brought in 2005 when i was in ny. i have moved to ct since. i was having my rear brakes adjusted 2 years ago when my mechanic told me that my rear end housing was leaking gear oil. i had to replace the whole rear end housing costing me $1,500. last week i was having the front brakes replaced and same mechanic told me that my frame behind the driver's door was rusted through. i know that the 2000 tacomas were involved in a recall about rusted frames. i also know that the 2000 tundra and 2000 tacoma have the same frame. i don't understand how toyota can have a recall for one model and no recall for another model either though both models have the same faulty part????????? *tr

Extensive frame rust on the well maintained truck. it is mechanically excellent. the exhaust system is riddled with perforations end-to-end. the spare tire support rusted through and the wheel fell off on the highway somewhere (i hope it didn't cause damage). i hope nhtsa will ask toyota to step up on this. my local independent mechanic took a look at the frame on the lift and essentially refused to repair the exhaust system because the frame is in such bad shape. it will not pass another inspection without a frame rebuild. the body is fine. *tr

I own a 2000 toyota tundra and it has excessive rust and corrosion on the frame of vehicle. body of the vehicle has no rust. vehicle has always been maintained, in otherwise great shape. local toyota dealer indicated that nothing could be done and to contact toyota headquarters. contacted toyota about the problem (4/08) and received a response that my corrosion warranty ran out 9/05 and they could not do anything for me. they indicated they logged the incident and that was it. concern is that various important points of frame structure are rusting very bad. i.e. leaf spring supports, body mounts. this is my newest vehicle and by far has the worst rust. after toyota indicated they could not help me i did try to paint and coat the frame for protection. this did not help and the problem persisted at the same rate with little evidence anything has ever been done to stop the issue. *tr

I have a 2000 toyota tundra 4x4. i live in n.h plus i'm the only owner on this truck plus i have it service when it needs to be done. my problem like everyone that has one of this truck of that year. it's frame is all rusted out on me the frame is going to rust out before the body parts are that is pretty dame bad for expensive truck which should last lot longer and this. the motor still have a lot of life to it and only has 115000 miles on it. i hope toyota will do something about this like a recall which they should if they want to have the same people come back to buy and they will see how toyota keeps there people happy. i now it cost them a lot from the last recall on there truck.but a recall is a recall plus safely first and how good they stand behind there words on their cars and truck. as for me that all i brought was toyota and i love there items. but this is the first time as for the truck i have that it rusted out on the frame which should never happen at all we pay lot of money and we should get many years and life out of the truck owners. so i'm saying this and supporting all other toyota tundra that frames is rusting out before there time should be.please help us owners toyota stand behind your words. *tr

I dropped off my 2000 toyota tundra pickup truck to my mechanic. the mechanic does not work for toyota but an independent garage. i asked him to replace my damaged rear bumper with one i purchased through the internet and also install a tow hitch. into the job he realized that there were numerous rotted areas throughout the frame and that the bumper and hitch could not be secured safely without replacing the rotted support system. these parts will cost me a huge amount and i feel this is all due to toyota's sub-standard steel treatment. *tr

I recently bought a 2000 toyota tundra ext. cab sr5 4x4 with 105,000k on it. everything looked good inside and out and runs flawlessly. the day after i bought it however, i noticed some minor rust on the front and rear bumpers, which led me to look at the undercarriage. i found several parts of the frame to be severely rusted with 1-2 inch long and 1/8 inch thick pieces cracking off the frame surface. the frame is very thin in many areas and i'm not sure how to repair. i did some research and found that this is a wide spread problem and will have the frame inspected as soon as possible. *tr

I've owned my 2000 tundra since it was brand new and have not had any major problems with it with the exception of the passenger side manifold. i have 172k on the vehicle, and was getting the exhaust repaired, when the mechanic took off the front tire and told me i had a big rust hole in the front section of the frame . we then inspected the frame in the middle of the vehicle and found that the frame had rusted completely thru in spots when tapped with a hammer. since i use this vehicle for a business i started last year, and tow equipment for work, i must purchase a vehicle immediately. this vehicle ran fine and with the exception of the frame would have lasted at least 5 more years. after reading the other complaints, it should have been recalled with the tacomas. *tr

My 2000 toyota tundra sr5 has huge amounts of frame rust on the undercarriage, including holes in the frame. this was found when i had my vehicle in for service and was informed when they tried to elevate the truck on the lift, the lift almost went through the frame. after further inspection, the auto mechanic found most of the frame was rusted and large chunks of rust were falling off the frame, as he was inspecting it. the auto mechanic informed me this was a safety issue and told me to no longer drive the vehicle. i've contacted toyota headquarters, but was informed currently there are no programs in place to cover the rusted frame issue. the vehicle is only 9 years old with 113k miles. other than the rusted frame safety issue, the truck looks and runs great. even the service manager at my local toyota dealer stated the frame should not be rusted after 9 years, even if i do live in new england. my truck is now parked in my driveway. i can't drive it, i can't trade it in, and i can't sell it. per your site and other truck forums, there are multiple (hundreds?) toyota tundra complaints about this exact issue that toyota is not addressing. i wouldn't expect this lack of accountability from any automotive company, but i'm very unpleasantly surprised that toyota is not being accountable for this manufacturing quality issue. i now have been informed this frame issue may be similar to the tacoma frame issue that toyota provided an extended warranty for. evidently the frames of the 2000-2001 tundra trucks were manufactured in the same facility the tacoma frames were manufactured, that encountered similar problems. i

Found out that toyota was having frame rot issues with year 2000 tundras, much like tacomas of the same year. found out that toyota was asking owners to take their tundras to local dealers and have the frame inspected. tansky toyota here in columbus, oh inspected the frame on my truck and found higher than usual frame rot. they also found a hole that has completely rotted through the frame on the right side of truck. tansky's invoice number for the inspection is tocs247283. i also notified toyota of america to let them know about the problem. they said they are aware of this and gave me a claim number through them which is 0905115613. waiting to see what toyota does for tundra owners since they bought back the tacomas that were rusting. *tr

The frame on my 2000 toyota tundra is rusting aggressively and although i have not yet had any problems or related failures, the integrity of the chassis is questionable. the connection points for the leafspring and body mounts have layers of metal peeling off and its undetermined how much strength has been compromised. i have sent a letter and photos to toyota regarding the matter, they acknowledged the letter but refused to accept responsibility for the problem. there is no definition for what is normal when it comes to rust but through my experience with previous vehicles, the aggressive nature of the oxidation on my tundra frame is occurring at a much faster rate than what is normally expected for vehicles in the new england area. i am hopeful that enough owners will step forward and a obvious pattern will emerge indicating some negligence on toyotas part and hopefully a recall will be initiated. *tr

The frame of my 2000 toyota tundra is rusted out to the point of being unsafe to drive. large, solid chunks of rusted steel come off by hand. others pieces fall off onto the driveway when you close the door too hard. it's a shame, too because everything else runs great and i wanted to keep the truck to give to my son when he gets his license, but it is now a safety hazard, unfit to drive. *tr

I am the owner of a 2000 toyota tundra. the whole frame has rusted out. it failed inspection and now sits in my driveway. i brought it to the toyota dealer..they charged me $45.00, to tell me it could not be on the road, and it would cost me $12,500.00 to have it repaired. i called toyota in ca, got a case #..but they said there was nothing they could do. i still owe $5000.00 on a truck i can not drive. i did buy this as a used truck in 2004, and it was fine at that time. they tried to tell me it had to do with the salt used in ne...however..i see the same problem in texas and other warm states. they had the same problem with the tacoma...i have done some research..all the steel for the frames came from the same company...dana corp..in ohio. they just came out of chapter 11 and have a new ceo....who worked for toyota. how many more trucks are on the road with the bad frames??? how many people have to be killed before anything will be done?? i have owned toyota's since 1977 and this is the first problem i have had. i also have a 2007 camry...no problem. when is toyota going to own up to the fact..it's the same problem they had with the tacoma??? it all goes back to dane corp. i want something done and i want it done now!!!!!! i am writing the attorney general in nh and other departments and will go to the media if i have to. this is a major safety issue!!! since when does a company not back it's product??? i urge you to have toyota issue a recall and help us as they did for owners of the tacoma. this is no way to run a company!!! not 1 person from toyota has contacted me to see if they can help in any way..i have done all the calling and gotten no where. please keep me informed as to what is being done. thanking you in advance for any help you can give me.

*tr

I own a 2000 tundra with 111,000 miles and it has a rotted out frame. i filed a complaint with toyota on 3/3/09 regarding this issue and got a case # but was told that they could only take down the information. i had gone in for my routine oil change but this time toyota put the truck on the lift and the frame crack in half...leaving me with a truck that was undrivable and costly to fix. never the less toyota on rte 44 in raynham still did the oil change don't ask me why..they have never told me anything in the past 5 years as an owner about my frame being rotted before. i drive around with 2 children ages 12 & 2 and it kills me to think i could have been in a serious accident with this situation. i have recently seen channel 5 investigates and i am glad other toyota tundra owners have stepped up to tell their stories. as so i am doing now. i hope toyota will step up to the plate with this problem and give us the same buy back program they gave to the tacoma owners. *tr

My tundra is a 2000 model and the frame is rusting pretty badly, i am concerned that this will become a serious issue in the next couple of winters, i like the truck it dose everything i need to do but the frame and wear the rear springs mount are going away fast i have lost a bump stop on the passenger side already. in this economy i am not wanting to have to go out and purchase another truck or car for that matter, if toyota was to have a recall like the tacomas. i would be in better shape to buy with that type of help. *tr

After hearing the complaints about the 2000 toyota tundra, i decided to put my 2000 tundra up on a lift. boy what a surprise i have 55 pictures of problem areas that are very concerning. there is a 3 section on the drivers side frame rail by the front of the leaf spring carriage holder that is wavy it is visible in the pics that is how bad it is. major rust all along the passenger side of the frame rail from front to rear. before lowering the truck all the way i looked at the top of the front shock holder and was not impressed with the amount of rust that is eaten through at this point. *tr

I own a 2000 tundra that i bought brand new. i've taken extremely good care of this truck the entire time i've owned it. the body is in mint condition, and shows no sign of rust. however, it has excessive frame rust for a vehicle that is not yet 9 years old. metal on the frame is rusting and flaking off in large sheets. it is rusting way to soon, and much too quickly. i knew the truck was rusting prematurely, but wasn't actually aware of how bad it was until recently when it was up on a lift. the rear shock housings are rusting right through to the pistons. the welds that hold the leaf-spring mounts to the frame are so badly rusted, i'm afraid they are going to let go and dislodge from the frame. both front stabilizer links have rusted and snapped off. removing any bolts from the frame for service (exhaust, oxygen sensors, etc.) is a chore and requires pre-treating the affected areas with a rust penetrant for days before the actual removal (if they can even be removed). at one point last year during routine service, i mentioned to the dealer that my tundra was rusting excessively, similar to the tacomas. (the rust is viewable just by looking at the frame through the rear wheel well). i was told at the time that the only vehicle covered under the recall was the tacoma and not the tundras. now, some 12 months later watching the evening news i find that several other tundra owners are experiencing the same problem. to that end, i think that these vehicles should be recalled from the manufacturer. i am extremely afraid to drive this truck on the highway. i won't let my children ride in it anymore for fear of an accident or malfunction of the vehicle. i'm listing the incident date as today and the current mileage as there is no hard date as to when the vehicle began to rust excessively. incidentally, my next door neighbor who also owns a 2000 tundra, is also experiencing the same problem. i have encouraged him to also file a complaint with nhtsa and toyota. *tr

2000 tundra sr5 truck was inspected at ira toyota on july 5th 2008. reason was my normal inspection in june(birthday) found a lot of rust on frame and was second time the state inspector mentioned it!!! he stated it may not pass in future . when i bought truck in 2005 i never got to look under vehicle. toyota said the tundra isn't on a recall list so i would have to go to local body shop to have it checked. mentioned the tacoma recall but they again said tundra was not on recall list . now the boston channel five tv investigative team finds a lot more tundras and said that toyota just about admits the tundra did not get the proper rust protection as with the tacoma . the truck will be worthless if it fails inspection and it is said to be a safety problem because rust is relentless. tundras should be recalled so people have a chance to recover from a faulty and dangerous situation. *tr

I asked a local service station about adding a trailer hitch. after inspecting my truck, they said the frame was so badly rusted, that a hitch was out of the question. in fact they said the truck was unsafe to drive. they advised me to contact toyota. i took my truck to the local toyota dealer and the service manager confirmed the frame was badly rusted. the service manager said he would make an appointment with a toyota representative and also advised me to call the toyota customer service. the customer service said the truck was out of warranty and there was nothing they could do, but did give me a file number. the toyota rep. took photos and sent his report to toyota. i asked a service dept. person how long it would take to get a decision, because my inspection sticker would run out in 4 days. he said about a week, but if i needed an inspection sticker don't bring it here, go to a small gas station since they usually don't look at frames. the toyota rep's report came back saying toyota would do nothing. i asked for a copy of the report, but was told it was company confidential. so, here i am driving around in my $32,000 tundra which is now worthless and unsafe to drive and wondering what i should do!

*tr

I drive a toyota tundra 2000 sr5/trd which i purchased new from tarbox toyota. the frame rotted out all the way through causing separation over the rear drivers-side wheel. the rot caused the frame to break in half over that rear wheel. this has also caused my brakes to fail from loosing fluid. toyota as well a professional welder has deemed my truck undrivable as well as unfixable. i have looked for compensation from toyota, but to date they have denied responsibility. this was not a accident, this was a product liability failure. i presently have a complaint # with corporate toyota. *tr

Low mileage (72k) 2000 tundra with extensive frame rust and rot in cross members. spare tire almost fell off due to rot in supports, which tipped me off on how bad things were getting. poked my finger right through the cross member the spare hangs from. the factory paint on even flat surfaces of the frame is flaking off with 1/8 of an inch of rusty metal attached. primary concern is pending failure of the l-shaped brackets holding the rear differential in place. the front driver's side bracket has lost half its thickness and i may have to dispose of this otherwise 12k vehicle for nearly nothing. complained to dealer, filed a complaint with corporate (case# 200810100741) but factory representative refused to look at it at all. took it to dealer for the tacoma test, but the frame is much thicker and it past. no apparent concern about the potential for the differential to go astray or that the vehicle could have dropped a 60 lb spare tire in the middle of the highway either.

*tr

Inspection of the vehicle's frame indicates that there is extensive rot beyond the crossmember involved in the current recall for this vehicle. the current recall is limited to the crossmember supporting the vehicles spare tire, while the frame rot uncovered in this inspection involves the frame rails (running front to back) in the vicinity of both forward wheel wells and it is extremely apparent within the drivers side wheel well. in addition, there is extensive rot in the frame beneath the drivers seat in the vicinity of the rear brake line mounts and also in another crossmember forming the rear shock tower on the passengers side. it would appear the rot is so extensive that the frame is beyond economical repair and replacement would be warranted. no crash or injuries were involved. *tr**12/10/09 update cw ** updated 01/06/10 *bf the consumer sent in pictures of the vehicle. updated 01/06/10. *jb

I am concerned about my 2000 toyota tundra. the frame has severe corrosion and there are actually pieces of the rear crossmember missing. the spare tire carrier under the rear of the vehicle came unattached about a year ago and the frame has gotten worse since then. i contacted toyota and they have assigned a file number, however cannot tell me when or if anything will be done. i remember a few years ago when ford recalled thousands of explorers for a firestone tire concern. this is a frame concern. doesn't anyone realize the danger involved if these vehicles experience frame separation/failure while the vehicle is in motion? it will result in potential serious injury and possible fatality. i offered to send photographs to assist in their, (toyota's) investigation. i was basically told that wasn't necessary. i will be taking the vehicle to a toyota dealer for verification of this concern although it is pretty plain to see. as i said, there are pieces missing. please help. *tr updated 01/25/10 *bf photos received. updated 01/26/10.*jb
