| Defect Summary | Equipment description: this recall is for trailer towing wire harness converters installed by dealers or for installation on 1999-2000 toyota tundra and tacoma vehicles. the connectors integrate the vehicle's tail lights, brake lights, and turn signal lights with those equipped on the trailer, are defective. affected part numbers are: pt207-34000, pt207-34002, pt207-04981, and pt214-04985. in the tundra vehicles, the circuitry utilized in the converter was inadequate to properly manage vehicle and/or trailer-side voltage spikes. if the converter is exposed to a voltage spike, it may cause an electrical short or open circuit within the converter. in the tacoma vehicles, due to deficient waterproofing and improper installation location of the converter, which is mounted in the lower portion of the tailgate cavity of the vehicle, an electrical short circuit will occur if water enters the converter housing. | |||||||||||||||
| Consequence Summary | An electrical short or open circuit can cause a fault in the converter and a non-operational condition of the trailer lights. if the vehicle is driven without trailer lights, it may be difficult for other drivers to see the trailer, increasing the risk of a crash. | |||||||||||||||
| Corrective Summary | Dealers will notify the customers and install a redesigned trailer towing wire harness converter free of charge. owner notification began august 27, 2001. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact toyota at 1-800-331-4331. | |||||||||||||||

| (1). i purchased a new 2000 toyota tundra extended cab limited at price toyota in delaware. in february 2009 i observed rust through of bracket from bed to frame visible through rear wheel well. requested that my wife report this to liberty toyota in nj during routine 5000 mile oil change. she was told that this was not a problem. (2). in september 2009 truck was again taken to liberty toyota for 5000 mile oil change, purchase of 5 new tires and alignment. liberty toyota service told my wife that the truck was rusted to the point where they could no longer align the vehicle and no service was performed. liberty took photos of the underside of the truck and transmitted them to toyota. approximately two weeks later liberty told my wife that toyota's position was that because of the age and mileage (9 years and 110,000 miles ) that they would do nothing to resolve this issue. (3). in late september 2009 i purchased a 2006 toyota tundra crew cab 4 door tundra limited as a replacement vehicle for my wife a toyota runnemead, nj. on that same occasion the 2000 tundra was put on lift and inspected with a powerful light. observed various rust through of brackets and at least one fist sized hole through the frame. this was witnessed by the toyota runnemeade sales person, general manager, sales manager, and service manager. all agreed that this was worst case of rust they had seen, and were of the opinion that the truck was not safe to operate. (4). in october 2009 i contacted toyota customer service and received a case number. a few days later i again contacted toyota customer service and was told that toyota is studying the problem. this sounded like a stall tactic and gave me little hope for any voluntary positive action from toyota. as of today 11 november 2009 i have had no further contact from toyota. (5). i have purchased or helped purchase 5 toyota trucks for my family. total expenditure approximately $150,000. *tr | |||

| Dt: the contact stated nhtsa recall 02v050000 concerning the trailer hitch was issued. this vehicle manifested the same problem as indicated in the recall, but the dealer refused to make repairs because the vehicle was previously in a wreck. the contact did not understand this exclusion because the vehicle only sustained damage to the front end. it was wrecked by the previous owner and sold to the contact before any repairs were made. the dealer who refused to service the recall was the same dealer who sold the vehicle to the contact after the accident.*ak | |||

| Consumer received recall notice 01e041000, and took vehicle in for repairs. but dealer stated part was not in, also dealer did not contact consumer to let her know when part would be in, and consumer could call to check on part . dealer told consumer to bring vehicle in. when consumer took vehicle in, dealer stated it did not need part. *ak *yd | |||
