 This investigation was opened based on 20 reports of model year (my) 2000 and 2001 vehicles experiencing severe corrosion of the frame, resulting in either under-body mounted spare tire separation or rear brake failure.the failure report counts shown above are for my 2000 and 2001 vehicles only.by letter of november 16, 2009 toyota has notified the agency that it will conduct a safety recall (09v-444) of approximately 110,000 model year (my) 2000 through 2003 tundra vehicles.the affected recalled vehicles were sold or are currently registered in the district of columbia and the states of ct, de, il, in, ky, ma, md, me, mi, mn, nh, nj, ny, oh, pa, ri, va, vt, wi, wv.toyota alleges high amounts of road salts are used in these areas and excessive corrosion of the rear cross-member (to which the spare tire is mounted) can occur and cause the spare tire to separate from the vehicle and can also lead to rear brake failure.toyota stated: toyota has tentatively concluded that the root cause is a combination of factors, including usage in areas where road salt is applied, inadequate vehicle maintenance (i.e., not following the recommendations in the owner's manual), the design of the rear cross-member, and manufacturing issues.the design of the rear cross-member is such that it is open on the top side and susceptible to accumulation of dirt, water and road salt.manufacturing issues of the rear cross-member related to the coating process also affect its corrosion resistance.toyota also states that owners of my 2000 through 2003 vehicles in states not covered by the recall will be notified on how to obtain the same inspection and repair as the recalled vehicles, free of charge.further toyota states: please note that while toyota has not determined a defect exists in 2004 through 2006 my tundra vehicles, toyota plans on initiating a field action in the near future to prevent future corrosion on those vehicles originally sold or currently registered in the affected region at no cost to the owner.by letter of january 8, 2010 toyota has notified the agency that it amended its defect information report for safety recall 09v-444 to include the fuel tank mounting system (i.e., fuel tank support straps and fuel tank mounting cross-members) in the safety recall.toyota states: toyota has not decided that the fuel tank mounting system in those vehicles contains a safety-related defect within the meaning of federal motor vehicle safety law.rather, toyota is taking this action at odi's request and to avoid future disagreement with odi with respect to this issue.my 2007 and newer tundra vehicles are not included in any of toyota's actions as the rear cross-member in those vehicles have been redesigned so that it is open on the bottom.the actions taken by toyota are sufficient to resolve the issues raised by this investigation.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist in the subject vehicles.the agency will take further action if warranted by the circumstances.

 Gas tank has rusted threw, main cause is all the rust from the frame dripping onto the tank and rusting it out. i told the dealer it was leaking. but no solution was ever offered.

 No major events but the paint began falling off my 2002 tundra in 2009. i was just told the top of the gas tank is now rusted out as well. $900 to replace. i have kept this truck up well. never had a gas tank rust out in any vehicle.

 Took my 2002 tundra to a local toyota dealer for a second time to inspect frame after being told by an independent licensed mechanic that my frame was perforated/rotted, the rear end housing was leaking, the spare tire hanger was broken,(tire missing), all heat shields were either broken,loose or missing and front brakes were in need of being replaced again. front brake rotors, pads and calipers were replaced 11/09/07. all of this had occurred since 05/06/2010 when the truck was last on his lift. harr toyota performed a frame inspection and verified all of the above failures. they also did the frame crossmember inspection in 01/10 and the truck passed. they specified that the frame failure was @lt rail/trans mt. they also said the rt ft sway bar link was broken, and noticed an exhaust leak. they declared that in spite of the frame failure it was safe to drive just don't do any offroading! so i guess that hitting a pothole would not be advised.! they told me that the brakes were unsafe, and not covered under any recall. i am very upset at the condition/value of my truck. i am also very upset that nhtsa is letting toyota get away with the warranty enhancement of replacing the frame only of these trucks. toyota and its dealers denied the rust problem for years. my problem started when the vehicle was still under warranty, and i was blamed for the failure. in the years that toyota has denied a problem with the tundra, the frame rust has infected, most if not all, of the truck. both bumpers are rotting off. the gas tank had to be patched (05/2010) because it was leaking fuel from a rust spot under one of the support straps. toyota will replace other compromised parts at the owners full expense. in my opinion they are using the frame replacement to generate part sales and repair business to help defer costs. nhtsa- please force a more comprehensive recall! !

 Tl- the contact owns 2002 toyota tundra. the contact was traveling 30 mph when they started to smell gas fumes coming into the vehicle. when the contact arrived home they got under the vehicle and found that the fuel line had dry rotted. the leak caused gasoline to leak onto the manifold and all over the rear of the vehicle possibly causing a fire. the vehicle had not been inspected at the time of the complaint. the failure mileage and current mileages was 42500.rl

 I have a 2002 toyota tundra that is leaking gas. initially i noticed a fuel smell when i walked by the truck which progressed to seeing fuel on the ground. if i put too much gas in the truck, over 1/2 tank, you can see the fuel leaking through the 4x4 fuel tank protective cover. i had the truck put on a lift and was told that fuel was leaking from the seam of the tank. i recently took my truck to toyota in response to the recall re:excessive frame rust and my truck passed that inspection. i have less than 51,000 miles on this truck and i am afraid to drive it on the highway. i have lived in ma for 22 years and have never had a fuel tank problem. on 04/06/10 i took my truck to a required yearly inspection. my check engine light was on and the garage told me that my vehicle had failed the emissions test. i have been following other owners reports online and have noticed that more people are reporting leaking fuel tanks. extensive research indicates that aftermarket gas tanks are not available for this model/year so i must have toyota either do the work, or minimally, get the part from them. based on their recent reputation, i am not thrilled about taking my truck back to them. i have 60 days from the failure date to get it repaired and reinspected to avoid losing my registration! i need this truck to be safe for me and all the other drivers that i encounter. can you please look into this safety concern? *tr

 The fill neck on the gas tank is very difficult to put gas into my truck. i must use a screwdriver at times to fill my gas tank. i feel that this would be very dangerous at a service station, because that if a spark from the screwdriver being forced into the fill neck could ignite the fumes. *tr

 My 2002 toyota tundra truck is not drivable at this time. the truck was brought to toyota dealership after a local mechanic found fluid leaking from rear differential due to rust/rot. during the dealers inspection, they also noted a gas smell and suspect that the gas tank or gas lines are leaking also. the dealer did a frame inspection and while the whole frame is excessively rusted, the frame passed the recall test because it had not been perforated yet. the dealer did not want to even remove the differential plug because the whole unit was so rusty. i have been under the truck and personally seen the excessive rust on the frame, fuel system, and suspension components. amazingly, the body panels have little or no rust and in very good condition. during previous dealer visits we were verbally told that the rust was normal. the repair estimate for gas tank/lines and new differential housing, etc. was approximately $7000. i purchased this truck new and have always done all required maintenance and was planning on having the truck for a long time. it currently has 89,101 miles on it. the excessive rust is not normal and i feel that the frame and some associated components are defective. i feel that due to the nature of these defects that the vehicle is unsafe to drive and i'm guessing that it would be difficult to sell and if i did, it would be at a greatly reduced value. i purchased a toyota truck because of their reputation for building long lasting, high quality vehicles. i feel that in light of these defects that they misrepresented their product. *tr

 I find it interesting that my 2002 toyota may be recalled due to the spare tire mounting being rusted. i have been very disappointed with this truck since the gas tank the rear differential cover and fuel lines have rusted through. i bought this vehicle due to the toyota reliability reputation. would you please review the frequency of rust on these areas and issue what ever recalls appropriate. *tr

 Tl*the contact owns a 2002 toyota tundra. while receiving an oil change a technician stated that the frame was corroded. there was also a fuel leak on the seam of the fuel tank. the service and parking brakes were replaced. the oxygen sensor for the check engine light had to be replaced twice. the technician concluded that the vehicle was non-repairable. the failure mileage was 30,000.

 At 25000 miles the check engine light came on in my 2002 toyota tundra. took it to the dealer for service, was advised that the repair would cost $300 to fix. the problem is emissions related and attributed to a defective part ( fuel filler neck ). there is a toyota tsb out describing this problem. *ak
