This investigation was opened based on 20 reports of model year (my) 2000 and 2001 vehicles experiencing severe corrosion of the frame, resulting in either under-body mounted spare tire separation or rear brake failure.the failure report counts shown above are for my 2000 and 2001 vehicles only.by letter of november 16, 2009 toyota has notified the agency that it will conduct a safety recall (09v-444) of approximately 110,000 model year (my) 2000 through 2003 tundra vehicles.the affected recalled vehicles were sold or are currently registered in the district of columbia and the states of ct, de, il, in, ky, ma, md, me, mi, mn, nh, nj, ny, oh, pa, ri, va, vt, wi, wv.toyota alleges high amounts of road salts are used in these areas and excessive corrosion of the rear cross-member (to which the spare tire is mounted) can occur and cause the spare tire to separate from the vehicle and can also lead to rear brake failure.toyota stated: toyota has tentatively concluded that the root cause is a combination of factors, including usage in areas where road salt is applied, inadequate vehicle maintenance (i.e., not following the recommendations in the owner's manual), the design of the rear cross-member, and manufacturing issues.the design of the rear cross-member is such that it is open on the top side and susceptible to accumulation of dirt, water and road salt.manufacturing issues of the rear cross-member related to the coating process also affect its corrosion resistance.toyota also states that owners of my 2000 through 2003 vehicles in states not covered by the recall will be notified on how to obtain the same inspection and repair as the recalled vehicles, free of charge.further toyota states: please note that while toyota has not determined a defect exists in 2004 through 2006 my tundra vehicles, toyota plans on initiating a field action in the near future to prevent future corrosion on those vehicles originally sold or currently registered in the affected region at no cost to the owner.by letter of january 8, 2010 toyota has notified the agency that it amended its defect information report for safety recall 09v-444 to include the fuel tank mounting system (i.e., fuel tank support straps and fuel tank mounting cross-members) in the safety recall.toyota states: toyota has not decided that the fuel tank mounting system in those vehicles contains a safety-related defect within the meaning of federal motor vehicle safety law.rather, toyota is taking this action at odi's request and to avoid future disagreement with odi with respect to this issue.my 2007 and newer tundra vehicles are not included in any of toyota's actions as the rear cross-member in those vehicles have been redesigned so that it is open on the bottom.the actions taken by toyota are sufficient to resolve the issues raised by this investigation.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist in the subject vehicles.the agency will take further action if warranted by the circumstances.

My 2004 toyota tundra double cab has an excessive amount of rust on the undercarriage. because of this rust, the camber bolts cannot be removed to properly align the vehicle. i have been told that they will have to use heat to remove them, along with a lot of force, and in turn may do frame damage in the process. i have been quoted by my dealer $5,200 to fix the problem which initially started with a small shimmy in the steering wheel which grew into a big shimmy especially while towing. that quote does not include any possible charged from the body shop if damage to the frame should occur. i do not have $5,200 so i ended up with a new set of tires and half of an alignment because the camber bolts were not able to be removed. here i am months later and my new tires are so bald on the front that i am actually seeing the tread showing through. i have always loved my tundra, but all of this rust on the frame and undercarriage is very concerning regarding the longevity of my vehicle. i was told that toyotas last forever. at this point i feel that my truck is dangerous to even drive but it is my only vehicle. i have owned and maintained many vehicles and never had rust issues like this, nor have i ever been faced with such a costly repair on a not so old vehicle. i am stuck in a bad place and just don't know where to go or what to do. i desperately need my truck. without it i lose my source of transportation as well as my ability to earn a living. i just simply cannot afford... meaning i just do not have this kind of money to bring my truck back to health. all of this stress and frustration is a result of this excessive rust. included in the estimate is remove and replace camber bolts $1,957 --- steering rack boots 400.00 alignment 90.00---- driveshaft assembly $2,003---- rear u-joint $433.00---- differential fluid $330.00 it does not include any possible damage to the frame/body in their attempt to remove the camber bolts or another brand new set of tires. *tr

There are two cables that hold the tailgate in place when fully opened(extended). yesterday(7/17/08) while unloading my motorcycle, both cables broke simultaneously mid way through the unloading process. the cables broke at the exact same place which was exactly half way from one end to the other. the cable is enclosed in a plastic sleeve. that sleeve is not sealed at each end. when the tailgate is in the closed position, which is most of the time, rain or other moisture collects in the plastic enclosure and settles at the bottom of the u shaped tube. over time that moisture has caused the cables to rust and weaken thus the break in my opinion. the result of the brake was that the tailgate feel unannounced to the top of the bumper thus denting the bumper and potentially causing harm to the individual who was doing the unloading. in my opinion this is a flawed product. *tr

Our 2004 toyota tundra has such excessive rust on the undercarriage that the rear axle housing which holds the gears has rusted through, causing fluid to leak. toyota says there is nothing that can be done for us.

I own a 2004 toyota tundra pickup truck. the bottom of the truck in the rear has rusted and the shock mount broke off. the piece that broke off also has the brake lines attached. this can potentially lead to the lines snapping and failing. i saw a recall on this for 2000 to 2003 years but not for 2004. the problem identified in the recall is the exact problem i am having. i am also concerned that the mount for the spare tire will continue to rust and fall off.

2004 toyota tundra double cab had severe rusting which caused the emergency brake cable and pin attachments to break. when the dealer fixed the brake, i was told that the problem was caused by very rusted parts which then led me to discover that the entire frame of the truck is heavily rusted. dealer called it flaking. i contacted toyota and the dealer was instructed to inspect the truck and send results to toyota. they now call it surface rust. i asked the dealer to put in writing that the truck was safe but they did not. i am now concerned that with the frame, bolts, nuts and joints so rusty it will soon become a safety issue. i have looked at other tundra's the same age and the undercarriage appears to have an undercoating that i do not. i am not satisfied with the answer that toyota has given me which states that it is only surface rust. *tr

During the course of routine service at independent garage mechanic pointed out three major components with severe corrosion issues that need to be addressed immediately: 1) frame severely rotted by rust, a perforation was identified on front driver's side 2) rear axle body severely corroded by rust, not leaking yet but likely will soon 3) power steering rack severely rotted by rust on passenger side, not leaking yet but likely will soon, described by mechanic as tender failure of any of these items could cause an accident leading to serious injury. *tr

Extensive rust is located on the frame of the truck. this 2004 toyota tundra was built on the toyota tacoma frames before toyota made the larger tundra and frames. it's therefore likely that the same extensive rust recall for the previous years tacoma's should extend to the tundra's that were once built on these frames. since the delivery date on this truck is december 31, 2003, it is believed that this vehicle should also be recalled under the same premise. the pictures from the recalled tacoma frames look very, very similar and there should be a check on whether or not this 2004 toyota tundra frame has the same exact problem. *tr
