Defect SummaryOn certain sport utility vehicles, due to a manufacturing issue in the front suspension lower ball joint, there is a possibility that the surface of the ball of the joint may have been scratched. the ball joint may eventually experience excessive wear and looseness, resulting in increased steering effort.
Consequence SummaryThe lower ball joint may separate from the knuckle causing loss of steering control and a crash could occur.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the front suspension lower ball joints free of charge. the recall began on july 5, 2005. owners may contact toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

Defect SummaryOn certain trucks and mini vans, due to possible improper finishing of the front suspension lower ball joint, some ball joints may experience an incidental deterioration of the internal lubrication. this may cause the ball joint to wear and loosen prematurely, which could result in increased steering effort, reduced vehicle self-centering, and noise in the front suspension.
Consequence SummaryIn extreme cases, if the vehicle is continuously operated in this condition, the lower ball joint may separate from the knuckle and could cause a loss of vehicle control.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the front suspension lower ball joints. the recall began on february 28, 2007. owners may contact toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

RQ06005TOYOTA MOTOR NORTH AMERICA, INC.04/10/200608/09/2006LOWER BALL JOINT SEPARATION
The office of defects investigations (odi) opened rq06-005 based on four consumer reports of alleged ball joint failure. the complaints allege that a front suspension ball joint separated while driving, which caused the suspension to collapse and resulted in a loss of vehicle control. all of these complaints involved the failure of a lower tension-type ball joint. during the investigation there were 39 (36.7 per 100,000 vehicles) complaints and 74 (69.6 per 100,000 vehicles) warranty claims for the 2004 model year (my) toyota tundra. further analysis showed that the average failure mileage was 54,025 miles, and that of the 109 unique ball joint separation incidents, 64 (133 per 100,000 vehicles) were on four-wheel drive vehicles, which make up approximately 45% of the 2004 my population (106,346 vehicles). the remaining 55% are two-wheel drive vehicles which experienced a total of 45 (77 per 100,000 vehicles) ball joint separations. also, throughout the investigation there surfaced additional failures which have prompted odi to upgrade this investigation to an engineering analysis and widen the scope of the affected population to include 2004-2005 my.this recall query has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea06-014) to further investigate this issue to assess the safety-related consequences, and to determine the scope of the affected population.

Catalytic converter failed at 55,023 miles and was replaced under warranty. the same catalytic converter failed again at 110,000 miles and when i went to a dealer was told that it wasn't under warranty and that i would have to pay $1200.00 for the part alone and labor would be extra. i also told the dealer that the high rear brake light housing was melting from the heat of the lights. they did nothing. the frame is rusting badly and is becoming a safety hazard. i called toyota customer service and they said there was no recall for any of these items and there was nothing they could do. adaptive equipment is listed as a choice under affected parts. how about explaining exactly what is the definition of adaptive equipment? *tr

My 2004 toyota tundra double cab has an excessive amount of rust on the undercarriage. because of this rust, the camber bolts cannot be removed to properly align the vehicle. i have been told that they will have to use heat to remove them, along with a lot of force, and in turn may do frame damage in the process. i have been quoted by my dealer $5,200 to fix the problem which initially started with a small shimmy in the steering wheel which grew into a big shimmy especially while towing. that quote does not include any possible charged from the body shop if damage to the frame should occur. i do not have $5,200 so i ended up with a new set of tires and half of an alignment because the camber bolts were not able to be removed. here i am months later and my new tires are so bald on the front that i am actually seeing the tread showing through. i have always loved my tundra, but all of this rust on the frame and undercarriage is very concerning regarding the longevity of my vehicle. i was told that toyotas last forever. at this point i feel that my truck is dangerous to even drive but it is my only vehicle. i have owned and maintained many vehicles and never had rust issues like this, nor have i ever been faced with such a costly repair on a not so old vehicle. i am stuck in a bad place and just don't know where to go or what to do. i desperately need my truck. without it i lose my source of transportation as well as my ability to earn a living. i just simply cannot afford... meaning i just do not have this kind of money to bring my truck back to health. all of this stress and frustration is a result of this excessive rust. included in the estimate is remove and replace camber bolts $1,957 --- steering rack boots 400.00 alignment 90.00---- driveshaft assembly $2,003---- rear u-joint $433.00---- differential fluid $330.00 it does not include any possible damage to the frame/body in their attempt to remove the camber bolts or another brand new set of tires. *tr

I received a recall notice for my 2004 toyota tundra for the front ball joints. i have called 3 times and each time my name is supposedly placed on a list to call as soon as the part arrives. well, 90 days later i haven't heard from anyone. i called my local dealer today and was told my information would have to be taken down and they would call when the part arrived, i escalated and spoke to the manager to said the part was in but it could only be installed on 7/25/07, no other day of the week would work since his staff is going back to school? i guess they just expect me to quit my job in an effort to have this problem fixed. i also escalated this issue to the manager of service department at lake norman dealership where truck was purchased. they kept transferring me to service dept then to parts, after about 30 minutes, i asked if they would even honor the recall notice and they said yes, but i have to be transferred again, no one ever answered. i have been dealing with this way to long and do not understand why toyota will not stand behind their products, i didn't do anything to the vehicle and this wasn't my fault, i wish someone could help! i do not trust any of the dealers i have spoke to at this point because i feel like they are all lying to me and trying to get out of repairing my truck. *tr

There was no event leading up to failure. this was totally unsuspected. the failure i experience in my 2004 toyota tundra occurred as i was turning from a small street to a major street. as i was making this turn, the driver's side wheeled separated from the ball joint causing me to lose control of the vehicle. as i lost control of the vehicle the tire became lodged in the wheel well causing my driver's side door to become jammed. i was not able to exit the vehicle using this door. as of now, the truck is still in the parking lot at the dealer being held up by a wood block. i was told by the repair department that the parts will not be in for a few weeks. toyota corp has not yet confirmed or denied responsibility, although i was given a case number for my claim. i was able to obtain a loaner vehicle from the dealership at no cost to me (yet), but it was like pulling teeth!!! *nm

We received a notice for recall for all toyota tundras between the year 2002 to 2004 because of front suspension lower ball joint (ssc50j). because of the recall, we made an appointment and went to the service location given in the notice. the appointments for both were made and using our vin number told us that both our trucks don't need servicing and so dismissed both, in florida and new york. on friday, my husband was driving the truck in new york and was about to enter a major highway when the tire fell out. we are inclined to believe that it was the result of a defective part put in by the manufacturer. because my husband was driving, he was able to safely steer away from a major collision. basically we were very lucky this time. imagine if it were someone, myself included, with less experience who happened to be driving, or if my husband had already entered the highway. anyway we towed the truck to our personal service mechanic, who charged us $70 for the tow. the mechanic told us the front ball joint came out and so the tire came off. the tire wing and the line was damaged due to the incident. fortunately, that was all. the notice gave a phone number, 888.270.9371, which we called. when we gave them our vin number, they told us that our trucks were not included for service per the recall, so they will not service our trucks. so far, our truck in florida did not have the same accident, but i am very uneasy, especially because i am the one that uses the truck in florida and since we purchased the two trucks at the same time. as of now, the damaged truck is being held at the mechanic's until we can have our trucks serviced. otherwise, we will have to pay over $1000/ per truck to fix the problem, in which case we feel it is only right to be fully reimbursed for those services. *nm

We have a toyota tundra a 2004, my husband said it was steering like something was catching he took it to a repair shop they could not find anything wrong, so we picked it up that same day, took it on a trip, on our way back going 70 mph on the highway it felt like the whole front drivers side of our truck fell off, it was a terrible terrifying jolt my husband knew that we had lost the tire and rim sparks were flying everywhere as we were sliding down the highway on the axel, luckily we were on a straight away with no traffic but one vehicle behind us. the friction slowed the truck down, we pulled it off the highway, we were surprised to see that the ball joint had collapsed and the tire and wheel were folded under the truck so that the truck was actually sliding down the highway on this tire and wheel, the sheriff said he had never seen anything quite like it. we called the toyota dealer to see if there had been a recall that we had missed they said no recall on that vin number. after checking on the internet we found that they do have this problem on the 2004 tundra's but ours was not part of the recall. toyota is saying that it is not there fault or problem. our truck is only 2 years old, with 52,000 miles. before the ball joint collapsed we were coming down a mountain pass with a lot of curves if it had of happened then our outcome would have been much worse. we were lucky to come away with only sore muscles. the cost of repairs is going to be over $6,000 dollars. i don't even want to get back in that truck, i don't feel safe to ride in it. how can you sell something that you know is not safe. i am very upset that toyota takes the stand that it is not their responsibility. we had faith in the toyota brand. not anymore. toyota's bottom line is money. they don't care about safety. who wants to buy our defective truck, any takers? who wants to put their family at risk? if you do, buy a toyota. *nm

I am a toyota fanatic but i am concern about the failure of the ball joint of my 2004 toyota tundra. on 9/6/2006 while driving on a local roadway at approximately 25 mph the ball joint of my 2004 toyota tundra collapse causing my vehicle's front end to drag on the roadway. i took my vehicle for service three weeks prior for an oil change. on leaving the dealership i felt a difference in the front end, on checking my tire pressure i found it to be at 35 psi. thinking this was the problem i reduced it to 32 psi. continuing my drive for an additional hour or so i realized that the reduction in pressure while it made a difference the problem still existed. i returned to my dealership after my weekend trip and informed them of the difference in the feel and sound of my tundra. they inspected it and told me that there is nothing the technician did to the vehicle that could have caused the difference in the feel and sound of my vehicle. i am currently in contact with toyota america and the dealership hoping to bring about an amicable resolution to this problem, they indicated that my 2004 tundra was not part of the ball joint recall campaign.

This is a second compliant. the first compliant did not have the correct home address. the p.o. box is my mailing address. on 2/24/06 antioch toyota delivered a 2004 toyota tundra to my home. the first compliant number is #10169458 most of the info is the same accept the address to where the car is located. the suspension:front control arm lower ball joint broke and the axle on my truck snapped and broke. the truck was towed to almaden toyota in san jose ca and that is where it is now. i called toyota and they told me today that this truck was not one that was recalled according to their records, but they will have someone come out and inspect the truck. how did it break if the part was not bad? the recall does not list vin numbers that are affected by this recall, only model names: 2004 toyota tundra and my truck is a 4dr double cab limited rwd sb (4.7l 8 cyl 4a). it seems to me they are trying to get out of repairing/replacing my truck when the axle broke while driving it to work. *jb

While driving to work the axel on my toyota tundra broke and the entire right front end fell off and i had to steer out of traffic to pull over without causing an accident. apparently, this truck was recalled due to the defective front end suspension parts and i was not notified of this recall. i had the truck towed to the toyota dealer and called the hotline and now they want to drag their feet in getting this truck repaired. i almost lost my life and now i have to deal with a slow resolution to a problem caused by toyota. what can i do? *nm
