This investigation was opened based on 20 reports of model year (my) 2000 and 2001 vehicles experiencing severe corrosion of the frame, resulting in either under-body mounted spare tire separation or rear brake failure.the failure report counts shown above are for my 2000 and 2001 vehicles only.by letter of november 16, 2009 toyota has notified the agency that it will conduct a safety recall (09v-444) of approximately 110,000 model year (my) 2000 through 2003 tundra vehicles.the affected recalled vehicles were sold or are currently registered in the district of columbia and the states of ct, de, il, in, ky, ma, md, me, mi, mn, nh, nj, ny, oh, pa, ri, va, vt, wi, wv.toyota alleges high amounts of road salts are used in these areas and excessive corrosion of the rear cross-member (to which the spare tire is mounted) can occur and cause the spare tire to separate from the vehicle and can also lead to rear brake failure.toyota stated: toyota has tentatively concluded that the root cause is a combination of factors, including usage in areas where road salt is applied, inadequate vehicle maintenance (i.e., not following the recommendations in the owner's manual), the design of the rear cross-member, and manufacturing issues.the design of the rear cross-member is such that it is open on the top side and susceptible to accumulation of dirt, water and road salt.manufacturing issues of the rear cross-member related to the coating process also affect its corrosion resistance.toyota also states that owners of my 2000 through 2003 vehicles in states not covered by the recall will be notified on how to obtain the same inspection and repair as the recalled vehicles, free of charge.further toyota states: please note that while toyota has not determined a defect exists in 2004 through 2006 my tundra vehicles, toyota plans on initiating a field action in the near future to prevent future corrosion on those vehicles originally sold or currently registered in the affected region at no cost to the owner.by letter of january 8, 2010 toyota has notified the agency that it amended its defect information report for safety recall 09v-444 to include the fuel tank mounting system (i.e., fuel tank support straps and fuel tank mounting cross-members) in the safety recall.toyota states: toyota has not decided that the fuel tank mounting system in those vehicles contains a safety-related defect within the meaning of federal motor vehicle safety law.rather, toyota is taking this action at odi's request and to avoid future disagreement with odi with respect to this issue.my 2007 and newer tundra vehicles are not included in any of toyota's actions as the rear cross-member in those vehicles have been redesigned so that it is open on the bottom.the actions taken by toyota are sufficient to resolve the issues raised by this investigation.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist in the subject vehicles.the agency will take further action if warranted by the circumstances.

SERVICE BRAKES, AIR - ANTILOCK - ABS WARNING LIGHT

Brakes feel inconsistent. last month abs light came on and stayed on whole day. next day light went off. internet search says many 2005 tundra owners are experiencing rear brake caliper defect. this causes front brakes to prematurely wear-out.

Malfunctioning brake sensors on 2005 tundra uses abs to override driver's braking below 10 mph. the defect is that that abs light does not appear on dash to inform the driver that he does not have full braking authority over the vehicle when the abs kicks in. the toyota dealer had damaged the brake sensor while replacing the rear axle bearings. i drove the service manager to witness the loss of braking control. the brake sensor was replaced and problems solved. back to the problem. i over shot a stop line by a few feet in heavy traffic. luckily, i was the first one at the red traffic light. it sounded like the abs kicked in, but abs light did not illuminate. i thought the braking system was recalibrating itself (who knows how all these onboard computers operate these days), but the abs was kicking in.

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 toyota tundra. the contact was driving at approximately 35 mph when another vehicle moved into her lane. to avoid an accident, she depressed the brake pedal but the vehicle was unresponsive and did not slow down. as a result, the vehicle crashed into the other vehicle. there were two people injured. the police were called to the scene of the accident and a police report was filed. the vehicle was towed to the insurance companys automotive body shop for inspection where it was determined the vehicle was totalled. the current and failure mileages were 74,645.

Toyota tundra 2005 - when braking the front end shudders and moves back and forth. when front braking system was inspected the rotors had warped. toyota issued a 2005 repair notification that brake rotors were warping but did not pose a safety problem. toyotoa recommended repairs require replacement of the rotors, calipers, and brake pads. there is no guarantee that this will resolve the problem per the repair notification. my vehicle continues to shudder when applying the brakes with potential loss of control at highway speeds. i have not had the recommended repairs done since the estimated cost is $2200 per my local toyota dealer.

I have experienced floor mat entanglement issues and uncommanded accelerations with my 2005 tundra double cab. i also have experienced a clunking sound in my brakes/front end when i shift into reverse and then apply the brakes. the dealer has told me all of these issues are normal which according to the recalls for other model years they are clearly not normal. can the 05 tundras be added to the current recalls and can the brake issue be addressed? *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 toyota tundra. the contact stated while driving at 25 mph the abs light would flash on the dash board indicating that the brakes need to be serviced. the contact took the vehicle to a local mechanic to have the brakes serviced and the local mechanic could not find a issue with the brakes. also the contact stated that the air flow button that controls the air inside the vehicle is malfunctioning. the contact feels this vehicle has a serious electrical issue and needs to looked at by the manufacturer. the failure mileage 6,000.

Everytime i came to a stop light or sign, the brakes would lose pressure and then the car starts going through the light, while i am still holding the brakes. the would also lose pressure to where i could not stop in the middle of a hot day. problem was consistent first thing in the morning on the way to work. took it to toyota dealer and they could not figure it out at first. they had me replace the brake pads, and rotors and bleed the lines numerous times. this still did not work and they said i needed a new master cylinder/brake booster. this assembly is all in one so the whole unit had to be replaced costing over $2,000 for the parts not including labor. the truck is a 2005 toyota tundra with only 60,500. they told me i was out of warranty and had to pay the cost because they have never heard of this failure before. *tr

I have a 2005 toyota tundra. i was carrying a load to the junk yard and after a few stops my brakes starting pulsing and stopping correctly became dangerous. i suspect the rotors got too hot from the load. this is a full size truck and the brakes appear to be too small to handle the braking required. the brakes and rotors will need to be replaced. this is a poor design and a safety problem. fortunately no one has been injured yet.

My 2005 toyota tundra, v8, aroud 30,000 miles continues to have kicking problems feel similar to minor car accident impacts everytime i release the brake pedal after each stop. i brought the truck to the toyota dealer several times but they did not know how to fix the problem. they even called the manufacturer but they did not know how to fix it either. since this problem involves the breaking system, i believe toyota should spend more time to correct the problem instead saying we don't know how to fix it. there are many reports of similar problem on the web ragarding toyota tundras. *nm
