Defect SummaryToyota is recalling 134,895 my 2006-2007 yaris vehicles equipped with driver and front passenger seat belt pretensioners, which are designed to be activated in response to a severe frontal impact. when the sensor detects a severe frontal impact, the front seat belts are quickly drawn back by the retractors so that the belts snugly restrain the occupants. the involved vehicles contain a center pillar sound insulator located underneath each front seat belt pretensioner.
Consequence SummaryIn the event of seat belt pretensioner deployment, the gas generated may affect the sound insulators. in the worst case, if the sound insulators ignite, this condition will result in a post-collision fire.
Corrective SummaryDealers will modify the vehicle free of charge. the modification will entail removal of the small urethane center pillar sound insulators (sponge) underneath the driver and front passenger seat belt pretensioners. the recall is expected to begin during february 2009. owners may contact toyota at 1-888-270-9371.

I have a 2007 yaris with a faulty center pillar sound insulator due to the safety recall notice. my local dealership(classic toyota of round rock, texas) refuses to service my toyota vehicles, stemming back from an incident in which i was overcharged $750 on a 2008 scion xb last year. they have told me to 'take my car elsewhere for repairs..but this is not a repair due to wear and tear..it's a safety recall. i have been in contact with the customer relations manager, and she is unwilling to process my safety recall work. i feel as if i'm being cheated out of the guaranteed warranty i purchased with my new vehicle, and they are intentionally risking my safety by not fixing a dangerous recall (seat belt tensioner). coincidentally, the seatbelt already failed to work properly when my car was struck by a small truck directly in the driver's door...if the seatbelt was correctly working i would likely have suffered less damage to my shoulders and neck. my next step will be to report this to the local police and file a complaint with the better business bureau. though, i hope y'all will assist on fixing my recall. thank you. *tr
