In december 2010, our '07 yaris' abs light started to turn on intermittently. as days passed, it remained on longer and longer until it just stayed on all the time. would have lived with no abs except for the fact that we had a newborn on the way. also, the brake system sporadically shuttered and malfunctioned oddly under normal driving conditions. so we bit the bullet and got it fixed in may 2011. turns out, the right rear speed sensor malfunctioned due to water infiltration. this is a well known issue and discussed in posts all over the internet. our yaris is a commuter car and has never been in water other than what lays on the highway while we drive in rain and snow. it is only a matter of time until the left side goes. we couldn't afford the $800 fix the first time around, but we managed. but we sure won't have the money for the next fix. it just isn't right. my argument is simple: a speed sensor is not an item that should wear out and malfunction in three years. what's more, toyota has since redesigned this assembly--what i take as their admission of responsiblity for the faulty design of this critical abs component. how many other yaris owners are out there right now who can't afford this expensive fix...their brake systems working improperly? they do so not just because of a failed part design by toyota, but more so because toyota willingly chooses to ignore this widespread problem, refusing to take the responsible action of initiatiing a recall of this vital safety component. sadly, it will likely take serious injury or death and the subsequent lawsuit before someone at toyota cares to take notice. i tried numerous times to speak with toyota (local dealer and corporate), but they offered no recourse other than to file my complaint. i was told the same as so many others:your warranty is expired. sorry, we can't help you. i am hopeful nhtsa will.

My wife was driving our 2007 toyota yaris and was exiting the freeway. she let off the gas pedal to coast down the ramp to where the traffic was stopped. suddenly the car accelerated on its own. she swerved to avoid rear ending the row of stopped cars in front of her and attempted to go between the 2 lanes of cars on the ramp. she clipped a truck and the car turned over on its right side, causing severe damage to the yaris. my wife was taken to the hospital with thankfully only minor injuries. my wife and i believe this is an occurrence of the well known toyota 'sudden acceleration' problem, even though this model is not on their recall list. *tr

Been driving a 2007 yaris since july 2006 - no problems, now have 51,200 miles on it. on a completely dry and flat road on 4/9/10, i was approaching a yellow light at appx. 40 mph and began braking. right before the light, as i hit a little bump (uneven pavement section where it changed from bridge surface to blacktop) the engine surged -- i felt it, saw the rpm needle go up and heard the engine rev. i had my foot on the brake the whole time. had to push the brake very hard to get car to stop. no repairs / inspections yet - not looking forward to a dealership telling me they cannot duplicate the incident. sounds like the 2010 prius brake recall issue to me . . .

1.events leading up to the failure: on several occasions my car seem not accell properly-i would have my foot on gas pedal and it would not go any faster and the car made noise similar to overheating or fanbelt with vibration-but the car would slow down when applied brakes-after letting car drift for a moment the car jolted then seemed to be fine-also, a week prior to the failure there was a clicking noise coming from the general area of where there was a recal corrected on my car a few months ago-i'm not sure if that has any relevance-2. the failure that occured was: as i was trying to reach approx 50-60mph my vehicle failed to accelerate passed 40mph-i noticed that even when i pressed the gas pedal all the way down the car still did not accel pased 40mph then i noticed the lever on spedometer was not move from 40mph even while having gas pedal pressed all the way down-then i applied brakes and car did slow down but the lever on spedometer still was not moving from 40mph while breaks applied and car speed decreassing-there was a noise from engine similar to the sound of overheating or fanbelt and was vibrating- and then after letting it drift then it jolted and then seemed to be fine - that was the first time it happened with spedometer not moving and while i was on the highway trying to reach 50-60mph-consequence:as i was changing lanes-there was car behind me in the lane i changed into and that is when my car did not accel and stayed at 40mph-the car behind me almost hit into me after i changed lanes and i was heading toward traffic that i was needing to merge into at atleast 50mph 3.the problem has not been repaired-the dealership has not been able to simulate/diagnose the problem-my car is still there i am afraid to drive it-i returned the dealers car and left mine-they would not let me read the diagnostic papers before signing -i want to know if edr and the electonic throttle control system has been checked

I bought 2007 toyota yaris 4 door sedan with automatic. when i used cruise control, it had at least two times sudden acceleration. the engine suddenly made huge noise for the acceleration, and i was scared and immediately canceled it. although it can be canceled, it is still a safety issue. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 toyota yaris. the contact was driving approximately 70 mph on normal road conditions when pressure was applied to the brake pedal and there was an unintended surge. the engine began to rev excessively high. suddenly, the vehicle slowed down. the identical failure continued to occur. the driver pulled over to the side of the road, turned off the vehicle and was able to resume normal operation. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer; however, the technician was unable to duplicate the failure and recommended that the tires be replaced. the vehicle has not been repaired. updated 03/30/10. *lj updated 06/10/10.*jb

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 toyota yaris. while driving between 65-70 mph she applied pressure to the brakes but the vehicle would not stop. she was able to decelerate by shifting the vehicle into neutral gear. 2 weeks later the vehicle accelerated without warning onto the highway. the dealer could not provide a remedy because the failure could not be duplicated. the current mileage was 18,150 and the failure mileage was 5500. updated 02/03/10 *bf updated 02/11/10.*jb

Accelerator on 2007 yaris is sensitive at lower rpms making it difficult to start off in first gear causing a potential safety issue when starting off on a hill or steep grade. was told by both the dealership and toyota that there is nothing they can do, it's a design issue. the dealer did mention that they had received other complaints regarding the sensitivity of the accelerator. i've owned manual transmissions my entire life and although you expect differences in accelerator and clutch combinations, this is the worst i've ever owned.*jb
