Car jolts into gear between 1st and 2nd gear; also problems between 3rd and 4th gear on an automatic transmission. brought car into local vw dealer immediately, to have repaired. diagnosed problem as needing a new valve body for transmission. this problem has been so widespread that vw issued an extended warranty for 7 years 100,000 mi. problem...repair is $1,800. vw will not cover this and honor the warranty for my vehicle which only has 49,000 mi. on it. they said i am 6 month outside of the time warranty (expired 6/18/12). they will not authorize an exception even though my car only has 49,000 mi.. it is unsafe to drive as it lunges forward and also gets stuck in gear. *tr

The first time i drove my used over 50 mph along coastal road (within 24 hours of purchase from a toyota dealer), the engine cut power and rolled to a stop. from first gear, it began to drive again. i took the car to the dealer and they determined that the valve body was defective. i am scared to drive the car over 55 on the freeway for fear of cutting power. in august 2011, the same cut of power occurred after driving 4 miles in the far right lane on the 405 freeway. i rolled off the freeway offramp and came to a stop. the transmission reset itself and drove up to 40 mph to my destination on side streets. again the dealer accused the valve body. in july 2012, i decided to let the dealer check the car out again because i had a strange cut in power upon acceleration from a left turn traffic light the previous day. the dealer determined that my fuel pump was defective. after these three fixes, i trust the car to drive around town. but i suffer extreme anxiety about driving the car on a freeway. this week, i need to move the car from california 300 miles to nevada. i am not certain if the transmission can drive that distance without a cut in power. not dependable, not worth $15,000 price tag. embarrassment! *tr

After having the valve body fixed under an extended warranty in march 2011, i am currently having the same exact transmission issues. vw refuses to cover this expense since the extended warranty is now void, and the parts warranty is void as well. however, i've driven this car for less than 6k since the repair. i also just had this vehicle at the dealership a month ago to fix the tiptronic transmission which just went out. now, two weeks after that repair, the valve body just decided to give out? well, vw is telling us the issue now is a valve body harness..? this is just starting to seem ridiculous on my dime. *tr

Shifting and jerking of the vehicle while driving. the jerking gets so bad that it can delay acceleration and mimic getting rear ended, yet service states nothing was wrong. *tr

Tl- the contact owns a 2005 volkswagen beetle. the contact stated that while driving at highway speeds the transmission fell out of gear. the contact lost power and had to exit the highway. the failure persisted repeatedly as the contact was taking the vehicle to the dealer. the dealer informed the contact that the transmission would have to be replaced because the valve body cover had failed. the contact stated they were unable to get an answer for why the full transmission needed to be replaced instead of just the valve body covers. the failure and the current mileages were 50,040. kmj

My 2005 vw beetle's transmission failed at 49,000 miles. vw has an extended warranty item on the transmission valve body that they acknowledge can fail which had failed on my vehicle. however i'm being told that my transmission has also failed. vw is claiming that the failed valve body did not cause damage to the transmission and that i would have to pay for the transmission replacement myself. this is a dealer maintained, commuter car that is unaltered and under 50,000 miles that i have had other professional mechanics look at and they do not see how vw can claim the failed valve body would not cause this kind of damage and eventual failure. we have contacted vw of america multiple times and they refuse to take responsibility for their product.

Slippage in the transmission between 2nd and 3rd gear causing jerking and slowing. this causes unpredictable vehicle performance which is a clear safety hazard that could result in a serious accident, injury or death. replacing the valve body as vw has indicated it might--if your vehicle meets certain requirements--will not fix this problem permanently. the entire transmission is at fault and must be completely replaced to ensure safety of the driver and passengers.

Purchased 2005 vw beetle with 7,300 miles assured full warranty....guaranteed paint on front bumper would be corrected...did it twice still peeling off....electric windows repaired twice....began making noises when weather was damp...took it to be checked out and was assured it would not always happen but normal...told them transmission seemed to be slipping....one headlight had a short, and then recall on brakelight...they did repair that...but informed me that was all they had time to do that do due to recall...gas cap cover was sticking as well...didn't fix it either....then my air bag light came on...took it in for recall on that ...after it was supposedly fixed airbag light did not go off, insisted it had nothing to do with sensor that was recalled...noise in front end began and floorboard flooded during heavy rain....with no obvious entry point....did search for problems with vw beetles and there are thousands having the very same problems i have been experiencing....now heat gauge light comes off and on, alarm randomly sounds.....but noise in front end concerns me greatly...would not even diagnose car without $98 bucks an hour labor charge to find problems.... this car only has 34,952 miles on it and it is falling apart...no way can all these problems be fixed and me make payments....but thousands are having these very same problems...why has our government not insisted on a recall..... *tr

Volkswagen beetle, 2005 model with 105000 miles. transmission failing causing hard shifting and slipping gears resulting in car lurching, sudden down shifts and pausing unexpectedly in traffic. caused rearend impact when vehicle failed to accelerate. as told by the vw dealer this is a very common problem with the new beetle 6spd tiptronic transmission, one that vw will not admit nor correct. i have been researching this issue for some time finding that there is no question as to whether a new beetle owner will have transmission problems rather when the problem will begin. while i have not been able to determine how many if any accidents have been caused by this issue i do know there is a great concern amongst these vehicle owners that accidents will occur. vw should be forced to recall all these vehicles and correct this problem.

Around 80,000 my 2005 vw beetle began shifting really hard. it jerks between gears, and has recently been getting stuck in first and third gear. sometimes when i drive the car it is fine, but other times, it has left me stranded on the side of the freeway. the level of unreliability is really dangerous, because i never know if it's going to speed up like it's supposed to. i'm in constant fear that i will get rear ended or stuck in the middle of an intersection. i've taken it to two mechanics and talked to two transmission specialists and all of them have said that they won't work on a vw beetle's transmission and that i need to take it to the dealer. i've tried aiding the problem with a new battery, but that hasn't helped. other complaints online (300 on townhall-talk.edmunds.com) have stated that repairs for this problem are $5,000-$7,000 and that it hasn't always fixed the problem.

When slowing for a red light the transmission slams into the lower gear..usually 4 to 3rd, but not always in that gear. dealer said it was a problem in all the transmissions., but will not do anything about it. dealer did replace a throttle body before warranty ran out. problem has reoccurred and now the transmission is slipping in the gears. this is a major issue. just googlr this problem and see what pops up.

Our son began having transmission jerking on his automatic 2005 volkswagon beetle around 75,000 miles. the shifting can be so severe as if the car had been hit from behind. when taken back to the dealer, we were told that the transmission is never checked because it is completely encased and the fluid is never checked when serviced. we were told it would be about $5000. to repair.

I bought a 2005 vw new beetle convertible in 2005 with the optional 6 speed automatic transmission. the car now has approx 80000 milles on the odometer and the transmission jerks and slips in all gears. the tachmometer winds 3000 rpms above what the engine should running at any particular speed when this occurs. during these circumstances in traffic i press the accelerator pedal and the car will not respond which places me at risk of a collision.

Owner of a 05 beetle. transmission issues started at 60,000 miles. put in a lot of money on repairs without replacing the transmission to be told afterwards the trans had to be replaced. looked online and a lot of 05' beetles are experiencing the same effects as early as 30,000 miles!! the car is fine for the first 15 mins than it jerks violently into 3 & 4th gear. the jerking gets so bad it feels as if i had been rear ended. i get panic attacks especially at stale green lights or intersections in general. i never received a recall ever on my car and noticed online a recall on the airbags went into affect on apr 08 which my air bag has been out. i have paid $15,000 and still have $14,500 to pay off in the next 3 years with a payment of $400 a month!!! i can not afford to buy a new trans for my car. all these 05 beetles are defective and very dangerous to drive due to their trans failing and very low mileage. i have always kept up with oil changes, trans flushes, new filters you name it. i can not believe that the car of my dreams gives me anxiety attacks just to drive it. driving is one of my many modes of transport everyday! please help vw owners with 05' beetles get our cars fixed, i am paying a lot of money for a car that i am terrified to drive. thank you for your time.

My 2005 vw beetle transmission began slipping and jerking about 2 months ago. i t has 50+ k miles on it. finally took it into armstrong vw dealer in gladstone or and was took it was the transmission valve and would cost more than $2000.00 to repair and it was not covered under warranty!! the dealer's service dept now tells me that if i pay $550.00 for a complete 45k mile tuneup that vw will replace the part for free. yes, the car has over 50k miles on it! please note that i have the beetle serviced at a local garage but the dealer tells me that the tuneup must be done by a vw dealer! this is a hostage situation. it appears from internet research that many, many owners of vw beetles are having the same problem. this lurching has nearly caused an accident on three different occasions. *cn

I purchased my vehicle from volkswagen around february of 2008. my car began to show signs of transmission failure shortly after and began to get worse in june of 2008. it began gradually from skipping gears to jumping into neutral and losing power while driving. the failure occurs very often now. i cannot drive my car for more than 15 minutes without being stranded on the side of the road for a short period. i noticed that as soon as the transmission warms up from driving, the transmission goes into neutral, and the dashboard lights turn on. luckily my job is really close to my house. my boyfriend began doing some research into this problem and noticed that this is common in newer volkswagen models that involve the dsg transmission, which resulted in a recall. i have a 6 speed techtonic transmission and the same symptoms take place. we have looked for quotes on replacement of sensors, rebuilt transmissions, but we are still trying to figure out what it may be because transmission work is really expensive. this is not normal for a car with way less than 100,000 miles. i do not understand why this would be happening to a car that has been well maintained. *tr

2005 vw beetle transmission slipping---shifting from 2nd to 3rd, engine revs and trans slams into 3rd. gives no warning. hasn't developed a noticeable pattern. with just under 47,000 miles there is no maintenance related reason this should be occurring. add this one to the complaint file along with the similar transmission issues. awaiting dealer judgment to determine next course of action. *tr
