Volkswagen issued a recall for replacing the crimped fuel line fittings at the upper end of the fuel lines (vw campaign un) already. the failed fittings on my vehicle are at the lower end of the plastic fuel line, with the same problem - when cold the. *ak

A recall on fuel lines was issued in march or april. up to this date vwoa refuses to perform the required fuel line replacement. i have had two appointments with a dealer (after vwoa authorized the replacement over the phone) and both times i was sent home. the first time the dealer claimed there was not recall. after vwoa called him he consented to performing the recall. as i picked up the van i received a statement that the lines were performing according to wv specifications. when i checked under the hood i realized that they had not changed the lines. i believe they were fraudulent. when i questioned the manager he claimed there was no recall. the second time he claimed his factory rep did not authorize the repair. the vw dealer in question is land vw in durham, nc. the service manager is dave wilcox. he simply refuses to fix the fuel lines. i believe vwoa is trying to cover up and stall. my lines are leaking but noone will fix them. why does the government not enforce mandated recalls?? how long will it take before vw and the government will take action? how many eurovans have to go up in flames. i wanted the lines replaced before i drive the van to idaho from nc (we are moving) but the dealer refuses. my new address is 2062 cassia st, pocatello, id 83201 (no phone, yet--but my email remains the same). hope i get there w/o an engine fire.

Fuel line fittings over engine leak gasoline, typically as weather turns colder. one three port fitting and two connections to lines running to the gas tank are involved. transport canada issued recall # 1994072 for 1992 eurovans which had identical components. this issue is common to 5 cyl vw eurovans as reported to the internet eurovan list. *ak
04/24/1999 | 1 | 10/01/1997
The fuel line leaked as i started the car. i smelled gas, turned it off and investigated. fuel was dripping from the fitting. the fitting is right above the distributor and close to the exhaust manifold. a fire was likely if i had driven the van. i replaced the line, paid out of pocket since vw does not see this as a manufacturing defect. i have replaced line but a gas smell persists and is probably linked to a bad vapor recovery system. this vehicle has problems with fuel lines, as other owners can testify. there have only been 10 000 sold in the us and a reported 3 have caught on fire and i know of several in canada. *ak

I believe it was fuel line related as the majority of the fire damage was centered around the cluster of fuel lines on the driver's side of the engine, above the distribtor.

This is an addendum to the earlier voq i posted on 9/10/99. eurovans were recalled in canada for the very same fuel leak problem - canadian recall # 1994072. the recall is in 1994, therefore vw would not have had any notice of the problem until 1994, after the 1993 model year production had ended. the fuel systems between 1992 canadian and 1993 us eurovans are identical, therefore the problem is common to both. *ak

Crimped fuel line connections at the engine leaks fuel. these connections are directly over the ignition distributor and pose a serious fire hazard. it appears that the cause of the leak is an improperly sized metal crimp: even though the rubber supply and return lines are different sizes they use the same size metal crimp. at low temperatures the age related reduction of compression set retentsion of the rubber hose material causes the hose to loose its seal and leak fuel. please note that the fuel line that leaked is the low pressure return line, not the high pressure supply line. *ak

Temperature at 27f started engine immediately smelled gas checked under the hood gas was dripping from 2 places onto engine block, shutoff engine. in last four ears in cold temps have smelled gas but driven and checked engine afterwards never found any drips guess because had dried up. casually mentioned it to the dealership when in for service at beginning of problem nothing was found.today the first really cold snap this year that i went to drive my car. i am calling for a repair appointment monday 20 dec 99. *ak

Engine compartment fuel line fitting leaks gasoline when ambient temperature is below 60. this fitting is located above the distributor so that gasoline drops onto it. once engine is warm, the leak stops. i have read at least two other similar insidences on a vw eurovan/vanagon newsgroup. *ak

The flexible fuel hoses extending from the hard plastic fuel supply/return lines leak gasoline in cold weather. leaks have been found at both ends of each hose. leak rates vary from wicking at hose ends to several drops per second. these leaks are especially dangerous as they occur directly above the distributor.s

Fuel line leak. gas fumes in driver's compartment for 6 months before university volkswagen repaired. they couldn't diagnose. i finally took them a copy of a posting from a eurovan list on the web which described the problem in detail. uvw replaced the bad clamps/hoses immediately then. apparently engine fires have ocurred as a result of this problem.

Fuel leaking in engine compartment from union of rubber hose/hard plastic line supplying fuel from tank to fuel injectors. leak occurs at low (15 f) ambient temperature. fuel drips in area of ignition distributor. was alerted to potential problem by postings from other vw eurovan owners and began checking engine at start-up as weather got colder. first detected leak on january 6, 2000 with outside temp approx 15 degrees f. will attemp repair myself, replacing crimped fitting with clamp. *ak

Significant fuel line leak occurred without apparent cause at junction of plastic fuel line from tank to rubber hose. leaked from unadjustable compression fitting used to seal rubber hose to plastic line immediately above distributor. extreme fire hazard. i have replaced rubber fuel injection hose and used adjustable clamps. should be a recall because of the fire hazard. *ak

There is a gas leak coming from a gas line that goes to fuel injection due to a factory machine pressure clamp, potential fire hazard. clamp cannot be tightened, and the parts needed to repair are unavailable. *ak
01/10/2000 | 1 | 12/01/1999
The pressurized hoses that connect the injector rails and the cold start injector to the main (plastic) fuel supply lines pass directly over distributor. exhaust from radiator cooling also blows directly to this area of the engine compartment. over time / at around 116k miles, said hoses had hardened developing a leak that was squirting fuel directly at the distributor. since one of the leaking hoses is factory crimped to the fuel suppy line, removing it only served to further complicate the replacement process. *ak
