Defect SummaryVolkswagen is recalling certain model 2009-2012 jetta and jetta sportwagen vehicles, manufactured from may 2008 through september 2011, model year 2010-2012 volkswagen golf vehicles, manufactured from may 2009 through september 2011, and model year 2010-2012 audi a3 vehicles, manufactured from september 2009 through september 2011, that are equipped with a 2.0l tdi common rail diesel engine/clean diesel engine. the fuel injection pulses could coincide with the natural frequency of the injector line #2, in specific load and rpm conditions. this resonance creates additional stress in the fuel line.
Consequence SummaryDue to the resonance condition, injector line number 2 could develop small cracks which could lead to fuel leakage. leaking fuel in the presence of an ignition source, may lead to a fire.
Corrective SummaryVolkswagen will install an improved fuel injector line for the number 2 cylinder on certain vehicles and will install vibration dampers on all of the injector lines. volkswagen and audi will notify owners to have the vehicles repaired free of charge. the safety recall is expected to begin during november 2011. owners may contact volkswagen at 1-800-822-8987.
NotesVolkswagen recall campaign number is 23j9/v5 & 23j8/k5.owners may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to http://www.safercar.gov .

By letter dated october 3, 2011, volkswagen group of america, inc. (vw) notified the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) that it will conduct a safety recall to address a defect in approximately 168,275 model year (my) 2009-2012 volkswagen jetta, jetta sportwagen, golf, and audi a3 vehicles equipped with the 2.0l tdi common rail clean diesel engine (nhtsa recall no. 11v-490).the recalled jetta and jetta sportwagen vehicles were built from may 2008 through september 2011, the golf vehicles were built from may 2009 through september 2011, and the audi a3 vehicles were built from september 2009 through september 2011.according to volkswagen, in u.s. applications of the above cited tdi vehicles including engine codes cjaa and cbea, the fuel injection pulses could coincide with the natural frequency of the injector line #2 in specific load and rpm conditions.this resonance creates additional stress on the fuel line which a small number of parts (based on the statistic spread of line strength) cannot withstand over its lifetime.as a contributing factor, vw indicated that a supplier used tube material with scratch marks from a grinding process during certain production periods.lines manufactured in these periods were installed in vehicles produced in the following 10 months:december 2008, january-february 2009, october 2009, march-april 2010 and september-december 2010.injector lines using this material exhibit a significantly higher failure rate.dealers will replace injector line #2 in all vehicles built in these months.in addition, as a precautionary measure, all recalled vehicles will have vibration dampers installed on all four fuel injector lines.analysis of nhtsa complaints, vw complaints, vw field reports and warranty claims found allegations of injector line leakage in 443 subject vehicles.the leaking line was not identified in 62 of the vehicles.for the 381 that did provide information about which injector lines were leaking and/or replaced, 358 (94%) involved an injector line #2 leak/repair.almost three-quarters of the injector line #2 leak/repair incident vehicles were built in the 10 months identified by vw, which accounted for approximately one-quarter of the recalled vehicles.the failure rate for injector line #2 in vehicles built in the 10 months affected by the supplier line scratching issue is 6.0 incidents per thousand vehicles (iptv).the failure rate for injector line #2 in other production months of recalled vehicles is 0.8 iptv.the leak/repair rates for the other injector lines are all well under 1 iptv.the action taken by volkswagen is sufficient to resolve the issues raised by this investigation. the agency will continue to monitor this issue and reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances. accordingly, this investigation is closed.

As i was entering the on ramp to get on the highway, under normal acceleration, there was a hissing sound and the car stalled in the middle of the highway lane where multiple cars were getting on and off the highway. i was forced to pull to the side of the exit ramp where i waited 45 min for a tow truck to get us while cars flew past my fiancee and i, putting our lives in danger. i had the car towed to the dealer where i purchased the car. today, 11/26/2012, i was told that the hpfp(high pressure fuel pump) had failed and would be replaced under the warranty. i am waiting for further information as to whether there are any more malfunctions or not. this seems to be a common problem that vwoa has failed to acknowledge and is putting peoples lives in danger. *tr

Vehicle engine stopped while vehicle was stopped. would not restart. towed to dealer. dealer service reported rust in fuel canister. claims cause of failure was bad fueled. $7200 in parts and labor. based on several blogs, i suspect hpfp failure was part malfunction but vw does not admit to this. *tr

My high pressure fuel pump (hpfp) failed while driving on the highway. i was able safely get off the highway, but barely and was left stranded in an intersection. i had to push the car out of the intersection. i read online that many volkswagen tdi owners experience the same thing. please force vw to address this issue. i did not pump gasoline into my tank. that is ludicrous. *tr

2011 golf tdi automatic (dsg) transmission. cold start, stalled while pulling onto main road, no accident only because oncoming traffic stopped.

Vehicle is a 6-speed manual transmission golf tdi. began sputtering and hesitating at 70mph in top gear on the highway. continued for about a minute, then evened out but the hesitation and jerking happened a few more times in the next 30 minutes. dealer could not replicate the condition, applied an available software update for driveability issues. same thing happened the next time the car was taken on the highway. did not stall, but seemed very close. tach and speedometer remained constant @ ~2000rpm and 70mph. suspect the high pressure fuel pump.

Model year 2011 make volkswagen model golf tdi diesel component high presure fuel pump vehicle identification number (vin) wvwdm9aj4bw066200 * component failure of high presure fuel pump june 21, 2011, my vw golf tdi quite running while driving in city traffic in san francisco, ca. this occurred in moderate traffic conditions of morning rush hour. definitely a safety issue. car could not be restarted and had to be towed to royal motors, san francisco. subsequently told by service manager that the high pressure fuel pump had failed and would have to be replaced along with fuel injectors. 2 days later was told fuel tank would also have to be replaced due to metal filings having contaminated the fuel system. i subsequently learned that the fuel pump had catastrophically failed resulting in metal filings contaminating the fuel system. also told may take up to 3+ weeks for repair depending on availability of parts. this incident occurred while driving in rush hour traffic at approximately 30 miles per hour in san francisco, ca.

During regular slow traffic driving conditions my 2011 volkswagen golf tdi displayed the engine control malfunction light on my instrument panel. i quickly pulled over and turned off the engine. after waiting several minutes i started the vehicle again and the light turned off. after about 10 minutes of driving, the light came on again and i noticed an extreme loss of power. i pulled over again within a few minutes and turned off the engine. this time i waited almost 15 minutes before trying to start the vehicle again and it would not start. i thought i was out of diesel as the low fuel light had also just come on so i called someone to bring me 5 gallons of diesel thinking maybe i was out. after refueling, the vehicle still wouldn't start so i had it towed to the closest vw dealer. the dealer said it was the fuel pump and i am currently waiting for it to be repaired. this happend on a saturday and it is now 4 days later.

2011 vw golf tdi 6-speed manual. my car was at the vw dealership to have an intercooler kit installed (tsb 2025464). on dealer's test drive, car abruptly stalled and would not restart. all power lost, car had to be towed off of roadway. finally diagnosed as a malfunctioning high pressure fuel pump. 03l-130-851-ax was the replacement part number. repair description stated that the common rail fuel pressure was too low, so the car's ecm would not allow injection - even in a limp-home mode. this left the one-year-old car with under 14,000 miles dead on the roadway.
