The number of duplicates between odi and manufacturer failure reports cannot be determined due to missing and or inaccurate information.the injury noted above was minor.on february 26, 2004, volkswagen of america, inc. (vw) submitted a defect notification (per 49cfr573) to the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) advising that certain model year (my) 1999 - 2002 volkswagen jetta vehicles manufacutured with the same brake light switch as recalled under 03v-265 (my 1998-2002 new beetle) are affected by a safety defect.specifically, if the brake light switch malfunctions, the brake lights could fail to illuminate when the brakes are applied, or could stay illuminated continually even when the brakes are not applied.either condition results in the inability of the brake lights to notify other motorists of vehicle braking, thus increasing the risk of a rear end collision and occupant injury.accordingly, volkswagen is recalling jetta vehicles manufactured from may 1998 to november 2001 to inspect and replace free of charge any affected brake light switches.the recall program, vw code wx, will commence in april 2004.

We have a 2001 volkswagen jetta tdi that we bought in daytona beach, fl. the car has 39,000 miles on it. we recently experienced a problem with the brakes. we were on rt92 when the car started slowing down and would not go any faster; this is in a 50mph speed zone. my husband was driving and as soon as traffic would let him he got over in the right hand lane and all the time the car is going slower and slower. he decided to check the brakes and found the brake pedal down, putting his foot under the pedal he got it back up and then the car started moving faster. this car had applied the brakes all on its own. then we stopped at a traffic light and the brakes would make a noise sounding like air brakes. we drove the car home (20 miles) that day and parked it in the garage afraid to drive it. *tr

We purchased our 2001 jetta 1.8l turbo wolfsburg edition in jan of 2003 from a certified used vw dealer. when we drove off the lot, not 5 minutes later, the turbo seemed to fail and we began to lose power, epc light came on, check engine light came on. we immediately took car back to dealer and they fixed problem. everything ran fine until sept 2003 our check engine light came on, shortly after we received notice that there had been a recall regarding ignition coils. we took our vehicle to a local dealership where they replaced the coils free of charge. this solved the light issue for a couple of months, then it came back on again, this time when idling fluctuating between 700 rpm and about 1500 rpm and stalling on occasion. we took the car to a local garage and they ran a diagnostics, cleared the failures to see if that solved the problem, which it did temporarily...ever since we have been running diagnostics trying to determine why our check engine light keeps coming on, each time the problem is temporarily solved. at first the mechanic thought it was the airflow sensor, but once they looked closer determined it was a different problem. we have had corrosion removed, connections cleaned, and our lambda sensor replaced. now our car continues to run and idle poorly and sporadically, the car stalls when you slow, the turbo works on occasion, losses power when accelerating, when car first starts it barely moves with accelerator floored, brakes are very sluggish, sometimes really having to push to get car to stop. no one seems to know what the problem is. everytime we take it in multiple errors pop up, last time there was 17 fault codes, mechanic keeps going down the list of what to check hoping to find the problem. the bill just keeps getting bigger and nothing has been solved. recently think that the original issue and current issues are one in the same as symptoms are becoming more similar. help! *nm

Besides having many, many, many problems with my vw jetta, i have found the absolute biggest one. while driving for a while...say 45 minutes or so depending on the day...the rear brakes lock up and stay on while still driving. it has been to the dealership three separate times to have this fixed and they say they can't get it to demonstrate the problem on their lame 10 mile test drive and has yet to remain fixed. they also tried to make me fix some other meaningless problems with the car under the guise of fixing the brakes which i did not agree to. i no longer feel safe in the car and refuse to drive it. *nlm

My 2001 vw jetta just rolled 30000 on the odometer. i have heard that there are problems with the brake pads on the rear of the car. i had to pay $350 to get the pads replaced and get the rotors refinished. i don't drive the car unusually hard and did not expect the brakes to go so quickly. also, this past winter, all of the spark plugs were shot. this not surprisingly occurred right after the warranty expired. i have had numerous little problems with the car since i bought it. i am leaning toward never looking to purchase a volkswagen again. *jb

Back brakes and rotors had to be replaced on my 2001 jetta glx v6 which was purchased 08/01. i only had 23,000 miles on the car! at my 20,000 mile service no problems were mentioned. my check engine light came on too. i had to have my o2 sensor replaced under warranty. the warranty did not cover the brakes. i do not ride the brakes. 1 month after i bought the car i noticed that when i start it in the morning it makes a sound like and old junky car would. i had it to the dealer twice for this and they said its nothing and that's the way a v6 sounds! it only does it on the first start of the day. i am afraid it will end up being some very expensive problem in the future. 9 months after i had the car the arm rest came apart and had to be fixed under warranty. i will never buy another volkswagen again and i would not recommend them to my friends who are md's and rn's and can afford nice cars. *jb

@ 20000 miles desert vw performed warrenty service (5 weeks ago) which included a complete break inspection. at the time no problem was seen. @ 22000 miles both pads on the back were totally gone. i understand vw used a thinner pad on the 2001 jetta's. this was to cut down on noise noted on the 2000 models in 2002 vw went back to the old pads. i contacted vw of america, and desert vw. both told me changing the back brakes @ 22000 miles was normal. how was my pads being worn down to nothing missed at 20000? @ 22000 i'm doing a brake job on the back brakes only? it would seem that brakes, (on the back), should last 2 to 1 from the front. the shop that did the repair said he has never encounted this before and this shop handles imports only. please contact me and i will forward all information to your office. i feel this is unsafe, costly and can be corrected. dt

I've come to my car several times and have found the brake lights on. after depressing the brake pedal several times, they come off, but managed to come on again after closing the door. more disturbing, however, is the fact that when the vehicle is on, your foot does not have to be applied to the brake pedal to shift out of park; it assumes your foot is on the brake. this is definitely not good; not to mention the drain on the battery. have there been similar problems reported?*ak

Recently, my abs warning light came on. upon diagnostic evaluation by volkswagen (vw), i was told that abs control unit was faulty and needed replacement. when i informed them that i had researched this and discovered that there was a national recall on the '01 jetta abs control unit, i was told that this was true, but in fact my particular unit, as discerned by their diagnostic evaluation, did not qualify for recall. i was offered a 50/50 split on parts and labor by the dealership b/c the car is only several months out of the warranty period. of course, after turning blue in the face trying to explain my dilemma to the vw customer relations dept (that's a real joke; they did nothing for me), i was left w/no choice but to accept their offer, as this was a safety issue and needed to be addressed. clearly, my particular unit should have been on the recall list b/c it was faulty and reared it's ugly head only 3.5 months outside of the warranty period. it's a real shame that vw is more concerned w/taking a customer for all he/she is worth one time around w/out any regard to maintaining true customer relations for the long run. the only satisfaction i could have at this point would be a full refund on the labor/parts charges for this repair. taking responsibility for this problem, and acknowledging the undoubtedly myriad other customers affected who also did not qualify for recall, should be vw's stance. corporations in this country have run amok and the consumer is paying-$25000 in my case, and a host of problems ranging from paint issues to the current issue. this was my first new car and i was very excited about purchasing it. vw has left me feeling violated and played for a fool. *la

My brakes would slow the car down on a stop and go traffic, where i will be driving slowly (without me stepping on the brakes), my car would eventually stop and will require heavy on the gas pedal to allow the car to move. (while the car car is in this stage:on a small slope the car placed on netural would not move) this would bring the rpm to a high rate to go at twenty km per hour (around 3,000 to 4,000 rpm). my rear disc brakes woul have heavy smoke once i have come to a full stop. this has happened a few months after i purchased my car. i thought it was due to the break in of the engine that was the cause. i have changed my rear brake disc pads a couple of times. there is heavy signs of the pads burning(smoking), people with simlar cars have had the same problem and they changed the brake booster and the problem was gone.*ak

I have had nothing but problems after purchasing my brand new 2001 v.w jetta. i had vehicle only 6 months and it left me stranded due to malfunction of emission control sensor. 5 months after that, ignition lock cylinder was inoperable, needing them to repair. 2 months later, owned for 1 yr 1 month, car was burning a lot of oil so consumption test was done and determined to be true, that the car was in fact consuming abnormal amount of oil. as a courtesy to me, the customer volkswagen replaced piston rings, rod bearings and deglazed cylynder walls. they had my car 6 days to rebuild engine. 6 months later car was shaking really bad when driving on the freeway, took it in and service technition discovered that rear brakes were warped and rear brake pads had premature wear. those were replaced. throughout this course of time the passenger brake light had been replace 2 times, air condition vent was not working and had to be remove and install new center air outlet, armrest broke and had to be replaced, glove compartment latch broke, and the brake lights have gone out and been repaired numerous times but are still faulty, not working at this time. volkswagen has treated me as though i was the one inconviencing them!! i regret purchasing this vehicle and will continue discouraging anyone from ever buying a volkswagen! i don't feel safe in this car!! after doing some research i see now that i am not alone. knowing there are many other vw's on the road with the same mechanical problems my car, i'm concerned with the safety of others as well as myself! *la

At appr 30,000 my d/s rear brakes locked until the pad was gone. the vehicle operation did not change. upon hearing a metal to metal noise i drove immediately to my dealer. i replaced the rearpad and declined replacing the rotor as it did not have any grooving. i have nad an an occasion were my abs did not kick in and one were the abs was activated upon regular braking. this is vw #3 and last vw for me. this along w/ having an electrical problem that resulted in a new computer, new wireing harness and 2 new sets of glow plugs is unacceptable. *ak

See similar complaint #8000894 rear brakes wore to bare metal with no warning at 2500 miles. no audible warning, and the prior service at 2000 miles revealed no imminent wear problem. seems to be common problem based on web searches on this problem. vehicle was made unsafe by this aggressive brake wear and reduced stopping ability. would like to see vw add some sort of warning device. lack of warning lead to rotor damage and replacement (unnecessary expense).*ak

Volkswagen of america knows about a brake problem with 2001 jetta's. they are soft brake pads, wearing out before it's time with no indication what so ever. the brakes grind into the rotors, which need to be replaced. vw has replaced both pads and brakes with some customers (outside of the warranty problem) but continues to deny it in others - such as myself. *jb

After only 20,000 miles on my 2001 jetta, a loud grinding noise began from the rear driver side wheel. there was no warning light, and no squeel prior to the grinding. after taking it to the dealer, they informed me that the rear pads and rotors would need to be replaced, at a cost of $375. they seem to want to blame it on me using the brakes too much. this is ridiculous. i also own a toyota with 75,000 miles on it. the brakes on it are still the original.

I was driving on i-87 north in the bronx in stop and go rolling traffic and i smelled something after a while, also felt a little bit of dragging. the speed picked up and when i needed the brakes the pedal was mushy and went down almost all the way barely stopping me! i stopped and saw that the brakes were super hot, so i opened the hood to check out the lines. a guy pulled over and helped me check to see if i had to bleed the lines at the abs controller and we saw no excess pressure. i had the brake switch replaced under recall, and greased the cylinder that feeds the brake booster, but still it grabs sometimes and i have to pull the pedal up. on http://forums.tdiclub.com , this is a known problem with the brake booster on jet. i want a replacement, and cannot afford to pay 200 + install for something that is a known issue with these boosters.*ak

 1. & 2. while applying the brakes the brake pedal is drawn quickly down to the floor, causing the vehicle to stop violently. simultaneously when the pedal is all the way down there is a loud sound of air whooshing and the pedal comes back to the normal position. 3. the problem is caused by a faulty power brake booster. this is a common problem that i found numerous posts regarding on the forums at www.tdiclub.com. multiple replacement power brake boosters are available at all the vw dealer parts departments i called in my area which leads me to further believe this is a common problem. reading further on the tdiclub forums it was stated that faulty power brake boosters are also responsible for brakes dragging and wearing out prematurely. this is a huge potential problem for vw owners. *ak

Earlier this year, there was a recall for the brake light switch on my 2001 vw jetta. the dealership replaced this. however, within the last month, the automatic shift lock (asl) has not allowed me to shift out of park on numerous occasions. usually, i am able to wait a minute and the asl light will go off, or i turn off the car or fiddle with the steering wheel. however, three times this past week i have gotten stuck and have had to abandon the car temporarily. the last time, i was finally able to get it out of park and drive it to my local mechanic (i had an appointment with my dealership, but i couldn't get in for a week). he noticed that my brake lights were out again, and believes that the brake light malfunction may be related to the asl malfunction. this may explain why the electronic power control (epc) light turns on whenever the asl light turns on, as it indicates a problem in the electronics. the local mechanic is currently examining the problem. *jb

Since i have had my jetta i have had to keep oil in the trunk because the car burns oil, i was told by the dealer that it is normal for a car to use that much oil, i have had to have the brake switch replaced, the arm rest latch replaced, cd player replaced twice, my passenger rear brake lights burn out regularly (only passenger side), my key in the ignition alarm and lights left on alarm turned and stayed on everytime i drove my car. the dealer's solution to all these problems was to downgrade my car and buy a vw beetle. i purchased a 2002 used beetle - dealer allowed me take car and promised to fix anything on the following monday. there was a light on the dash that was lit up called epc - i asked the dealer what the light was for and they said that the alignment needed to be adjusted no big deal they would fix it when i returned on monday. i drove the car off the lot got about 20 miles for the dealership and the car died on the freeway!!!!! while waiting for the tow truck i read in the car manual that epc stood for electric power control - it said if this light goes on do not attempt to drive - tow to dealership immediately - after that i marched right back to the dealer and got my jetta back - however i still have all of the above problems and few to add to the list defective electric window, noisy brakes when in reverse even after brakes were replaced. i can't wait to turn the piece of @#$%# in to the dealer when my lease is up and walk away - i just feel sorry for the fool they turn around and sell it to! *la
