Debris from gaskets in air ventilation system exits the air vents and hits the occupants. the debris, on occasion, hit the driver in the eye causing temporary loss of vision. the debris flying out into the face of the driver or other vehicle occupant is always a distraction to driver attention to driving even when direct contact with the eye(s) does not occur. *tr

I bought my 2001 volkswagen jetta used in july 2006. ever since, there has been a horrible smell of crayons infused throughout my car. i tried everything to get the smell out. however, this smell is becoming a daily burden for me to even drive the car for more than 5 minutes since i get headaches and really affects my allergies. i tried to research this smell and found many forums of people with the same problem saying that it is coming from a chemical in the carpet. i am confused as to why volkswagen is not doing anything about this problem since it can be very serious. chemicals seeping through the carpets and the driver breathing it in every time they drive is not a problem that a driver should be worrying about. a car is unsafe enough but to add toxins is unacceptable. i didn't pay for a car to get headaches and breath in chemicals when i drive it. is there anything that can be done about this problem? thank you for listening to a problem that has really become a burden on my everyday life! *tr

I have a 2001 jetta and is has a crayon smell in it. it gets worst in the heat. i have complained to the corporate office and nothing has been done. there are numerous complaints of the same complaint on the internet however it continues to be ignored. it is to the point where i get a headache when i'm in the car. i read one complaint said it was a type of plastic wax jetta uses in the vehicle and that product is toxic. i have exhausted all options and don't know what else i can do to get them to do a recall on this matter due to the number of complaints. *tr

I own a 2001 vw jetta. i bought it 3 years ago, used from the volkswagen dealership. the automobile was sold as a certified auto, which i found out later does not mean much. my trunk is locked shut and does not open manually or with remote, i've had to replace cv boots, catalytic converter, transmission and numerous headlight, taillight and blinker bulbs. and today one of my headlights is so dim, it doesn't really provide any light when it is dark. i have replaced it and replaced it. it stays fine for about 2 days and then just dims out again. i can't afford to keep taking it to volkswagen. it's a rip off and they don't even fix anything right anyway. my engine fan went out all of the sudden the other day, causing the car to overheat. i had to get it towed. that isn't the first time i have had to pay to have it towed. the interior plastic coating on armrests and all plastic inside is peeling and looks terrible. when i push unlock all doors, the driver's side back seat door will not open unless i reach inside and pull the lock open manually. there is so much more, but i don't want to waste my time. i know nothing will happen, even though it is so obvious that these cars are complete lemons, and they need to stop selling them to people. *tr

2001 vw jetta wolfsburg 40k miles - water leaks into the car from underneath the instrument panel on the passenger side. dealer stated that it was the drain channel from the sunroof. week later the problem reoccurred. dealer stated that they have no idea as to what is causing the problem. they're in process of taking the car apart. vw customer service is not being helpful at all. i've seen at least two comments on the web about similar problem, but the dealer and the vw customer service claims that they have never seen this problem before. any advise before my car gets totally disassembled? not to mention water damage to the carpeting...*ak

I have had nothing but issues with my 2001 jetta. i have replaced all the wheel bearings and the front bearing twice. i have also had to replace the engine coils twice on this car. now in the last 2-3 weeks the clear coat has started to peel off the car. the paint is not coming off just the clear coat. i called the vw care center and they ran me around having me take the car to a vw body shop, and having the service manager look at it and neither one of them could tell me why the clear coat was peeling. they both did respond by saying the could be sure but in may have been over baked at the factory after it was painted but of course nobody want to admit that because then vw would be liable to fix it. so in calling the vw care center back the pretty much told me the car was 5 year old and it wasn't their problem any more but mine. great customer service. i've owned other cars and never had a problem with the clear coat. granted they were not vw cars. i recommend not to buy a vw of any kind because this company will not stand by their fault. i mean 5 years old that the clear coat is peeling off. that isn't right. thanks for nothing vw. don't buy a vw. *jb

I have filed complaints repeatedly with vw customer care concerning the inferior material used to upholster the jetta tdi (gls). i stated to them that it was like driving a giant lint brush! any clothing you wear sticks to the seats and doorsand on a good day, even the ceiling! the operator i spoke with was very polite when he asked me what i thought the resolution should be to resolve the problem? i stated to him that the car should be completely reupholstered at vw's expense!at which point, he offered to send me a kit to help deal with the lint problem. i asked if they had received a volume of complaints about this issue, and the operator stated, no. i asked him, why do you conveniently have a kit available for a problem you say does not exist? well needless to say, the call was very silent for a minute or two. the kit consisted of (1) lint brush, (exactly like the one i purchased previously), and (1) 3m cloth. it is truly a mystery what vw expects me to do with the 3m cloth...i suppose i could use it to muffle my screams of frustration!*ak

STRUCTURE - BODY - BUMPERS
01/06/2005210/11/2000
For some time now i've been aware that if i pull to far up to a tire bumper anywhere, my front end will catch and pull part of my front bumper off. as i live 120 miles from a vw dealership, i let my fiance fix the bumper each time it fell off. recently, i made the mistake of pulling up to far again and my bumper pulled off partially on the front right side of car. i was on my way out of town. while driving i heard a knocking noise and pulled over to investigate. found that front right tire was rubbing on plastic tire guard due to bumper problem. i turned around and headed slowly back home as this could cause car to loose control if tire pushed to hard. tire has since worn through tire guard and bumper still hanging as screws are stripped! the low bumper guard is obviously a misjudgement in the manufactuers make on this particular model and should be fixed at no charge as it happens to many people with this particular vehicle.

The front bumper assembly on my jetta partially detaches whenever it scrapes against a curb or parking block. i have had it repaired three times and tried to repair it myself three times. i have spent over five hundred dollars in the first year of ownership and now it has happened again. this is obviously a much more wide spread problem than is being reported. volkswagen should be made to repair the bumpers at no charge or recall all effected vehicles and strengthen the bumper assembly. *ts *nlm **dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12-12-02 cut over to artemis**770127

The front bumper is too low to the ground. when parking, the front bumper passes over standard concrete 'tire stoppers'. when reversing out of the stall (even at very slow speeds), the front bumper assembly detaches from the vehicle. i have contacted volkswagen about this problem. volkswagen's suggested solution is not to pull so far into the parking space. unfortunately, due to the design of the vehicle, it is impossible to tell if you are too far in until it is too late and the damage has occurred. i have personally observed this problem occur on at least four other jettas (both here in honolulu and on the mainland). on our jetta alone, this has occurred on three occasions. although the dealer has been helpful in making cosmetic repairs to the bumper, complete replacement of the bumper assembly would cost approximately $1,000. i believe that this is a design defect which the manufacturer should be required to correct. i am concerned that in the event of an accident, a partially detached bumper assembly could be a safety hazard.*ak

Consumer states that when starting the vehicle the alarm sounds and horn goes off and lights flash on and off for about 10 minutes. this also happens when opening doors to exit the vehicle. also the illuminated entry and the power door locks were not working. the dealer has replaced wiring and relay in the doors, the radio ignition switch, and door lock, however the problem still exists. the dealer now states that there is nothing further they can do. nlm front bumer pulled loose. bumper and lower facia reinstalled. *tt
06/15/2001502/01/2001
Front bumper ground effects are obviously designed too low. besides scraping in driveways, the bumper has been pulled off several times when leaving a parked space with a concrete 'tire bumper'. these were obviously meant to stop the tires of the car, and not pull the whole bumper off. the dealer charged me to replace the plastic lining, which was pulled from the bumper and had worn against the tire. the bumper is no longer securely fastened as the parts are wearing down. corporate was of no help and would not reimburse or suggest a course of action to avoid future problems. i will not be keeping this car through the term i expected and will not recommend one to anyone shopping. too big of a hastle to deal with. fortunately i didn't get the sport suspension, which would have the bumper even lower to the ground. it's not a farrari, for pete's sake.*ak

When i parked in a parking space with a concrete tire bumper, the bumper got caught when i pulled out and caused the parking light grill covers to pop out. the serv. dept. replacxed them, no charge. the second time it happened they accused me of running over the top of something, and damaging the car, which i did not do. the manufacturers refuse to fix it saying it is an insurance issue, even though the ser. dept. told me they have had the same complaint with other cars, and even the manager of the serv. dept. said it happened to her jetta! i believe they should fix it without charge, since it is obviously a design defect. *ak

Opened drivers door and the lower of the two bolts on the lower door secure hinge sheared off. the door has never been removed or repaired previously. the only way this could have happened is if the bolt were over tightened upon installation. the vehicle is past warranty and vw america will not pay for this replacement. this could be a serious problem if more bolts shear because of improper tightening. we base the over tightening suggestion on the opinion of three independent body repair shops, one of which specializes in volkswagen repairs. *jb

While traveling in the left lane of the pa turnpike at a speed of 65 mph, the right side seat and curtain air bags deployed for no reason and without warning. i was safely able to pull over to the right lane and then off to the highway since the engine shuts down with air bag deployment.upon having the vehicle inspected by a vw dealer no damage to the vehicle was found. i did not hit any pot hole or road debris. there is an obvious fault with the computer and/or sensor system in the vehicle. the vw dealer claims to have heard of no such occurence eventhough there appear to be many such occurences as listed on this webiste. vw america claims there was an impact to the right rear axel which set off the airbag. again there was no impact at the time of deployment. traveling at that speed and in the environment i was there should have been more damage to my car than a scratch on the rear axel undercarriage. *ak
