I had driven the car approximately 30 miles when, while at a stop light the sunroof exploded outward. the pane remained in one piece, but was shattered and small shards of glass fell down on me. the temp outside was 36 degrees, no vehicle passed by, there was no point of impact, no severe temperature change, no chip or crack in the glass prior to the incident. the vehicle is kept in a garage and there was no precipitation (snow or rain) on that day. vw claims no fault of theirs, but admits to a recall on a trough that leads from the sunroof down through the doors that's known to clog with debris. vw will not repair at their cost.

Tl-the contact owns a 2002 volkswagen jetta. while driving 60 miles per hour the drivers side power window regulator collapsed. the contact spoke with the dealer who advised the cost of the repair would be $280. the dealer advised since there was no recall, the vehicle would not be repaired for free. the vehicle had not been repaired. the current miles were 20,000. the failure miles were 19,995. aa

Windows fall off of track in door. glass falls completely inside the door. this happened while i was driving and is a major safety hazard. i was entering a 6 lane highway when this happened. it was my driver side front door. my husband has had this happen on his jetta as well. we don't recommend jetta's or vw for that matter for anything. we haven't even owned our cars for a year and we purchased them on the same day. they have been in the shop for repairs between the both of them 6 times! 3 each car! this is ridiculous for new cars and the windows are not safe if you ask me. according to vw technicians, it is a known issue, but won't be replaced until they break. these windows falling inside the door like they do is a hazard. if you are driving in the rain or even a nice day, it is distracting and not safe. *nlm

My driver's side window suddenly stopped working. i took it to a repair shop and the mechanic said that piece that holds the window in place was stretched and about to break. when i spoke with a friend who used to own a jetta of the same year, make, and model as mine, he said that the same thing had happened to his vehicle. he said that there had been a recall on this part. when i checked the nhtsa's web site, however, i could not find this recall. *tr the consumer had problems with the engine and the sterring column was defective. the engine light illuminated right after the vehicle was purchased. updated 06/01/09.*jb

Way to many to list here. i have had problems from the start. more than $7000 worth of repair (plus more that was covered by warr) the final item that caused me to say i would never consider another vw product was the engine damage caused by a timing belt failure. all services were performed at the dealership. the users manual states inspection of the belt at services (that i paid for) and replacement at 120,000 miles. i only had 92,000 miles. it will cost $5,000 to repair the engine. it is not cost effective to repair this car. it was a great car to drive but quality control is poor at best. *nm

My wife's 2002 jetta station wagon turbo has been nothing but trouble. only 30 k and today a $2,600 repair. valve for air conditioner pump broke and sent metal fragments through the system necessitating replacement of ac pump. cooling fan not working- that's $800.00. last repair was auto windows- idiot designers put in plastic components. my wife takes excellent care of her vehicle (oil change, etc.) and this inferior bit of workmanship just costs her more money. she will shortly be dumping this piece of crap for toyota corolla. *nm

2 times i had to replace a faulty 02 sensor 1st time engine temp sensor. rear left light burned out 3-4 times within 80 000km. said it's easier to replace then find the problem at dealership. have done oil consumption tests 1 litre of oil per 3161km. saying that this normal. this dealership have recommended flushing the engine. changing the grade of oil. do not drive in rush hour traffic. most of the consumption occurs on the highway and not in traffic. change the oil instead of 8000 km at 5000km??? this is what volkswagen has recommended. the most interesting part was watching the mechanic when it consumed the most amount between oil consumption test. he started looking for leaks again & added oil. rattling in driver side door and window fell into door passenger side. fixed window and rattling still seems to be noticable. *jb

I was driving to work when my 2002 voklswagen jetta hit a bump in the road/pothole and the passenger airbag went off. i got out to inspect if i hit anything since i wasn't sure because of the airbag going off. i got out of the car and there was nothing in the road besides a pothole that everyone else hit as well on the off ramp. there was not a scratch of damage or any impact at all. i just bought this car a little over 2 months ago and it was already back to the dealer for a broken power window and twice for the transmission. i am fed up with this car. there is only 25,000 miles on the car and an airbag should not go off for a pothole. i went to a different vw dealer and they said it's not a warranty issue and it would cost $800 - $1,000 to fix. this is ridiculous that i will have to pay for something like this for normal use of the car. *jb

Was currently deployed in support of operation iraqi freedom for more than a year, my car was at my parents, being driven once or twice a week to keep engine in good shape. some of these things have been since returning in april 2004, others happened prior to leaving in february 2003. it's a 2002 jetta gls. i shouldn't be having these type of problems this soon. 1. oil plug on oil pan is almost stripped from getting oil changes (advised by 3 different garages). currently attempting to get a new plug, an oversized one per 2 garages. 2. patches of paint seem to be almost chipping away (on several spots all over the car). took it to the dealer & they said it was due to bird poop. my car stays in a garage & gets washed bi-weekly. 3. the coating on both inside door handles is peeling. 4. the window mechanism needed fixed. dealer fixed. 5. recall about brake light fixed by dealer. *jb

Purchased car in january 2002 new from dealer, in shop 2 days later tire not installed, causing it to go flat, happened again 2 days after that, and again the next week, finally rims and tires were replaced problem solved. then hand brake failed, in shop to fix, 2 weeks after it was returned failed again, fixed, then 3 weeks after that if failed again, then the window brackets broke, then engine failed that was supposedly on a recall part, was fixed, then it failed a few months later again, supposedly fixed, then it failed again only this time they said it was the catalytic converter, then it failed again this time they said it was the oil pump and hose and blamed that on us, then it failed again, was fixed, and now it is completely down again. *ak

I purchased a new 2002 jetta gls and have had the car jump started four times in the past year. after the second time the battery died, they gave me a solar panel to help keep the battery charged. my battery died again last week with the solar panel plugged in. vw ran another diagnostic test and still maintains that, among a long list of the other possibilities they have offered me, they are sure it is because i don't drive the car enough to charge the battery sufficiently to handle all the electronics that are standard on the car. i am not satisfied with this explanation. if they put all these extras on the car and it draws too much on the battery when not driven for a few days , then why put them on the car? in addition,i also had the front windows crash inside the door while entering a major highway. they were replaced. and, last month while i had the car in for a recall regarding the tail lights, i had to have the window mechanism fixed again due to a faulty clamp. i will never buy another volkswagen. i never expected a new car to have so many problems. it is an inconvenience and a waste of time. *ak

This car has had too many serious problems to be limited to this small space. it is clearly a lemon. these problems substantially impair the use and value of the vehicle. the car received a new transmission yesterday after we had reported 3 previous times that there it remained in reverse after shifting into drive. each time we were told it was unreproduceable and the complaint was never noted on the work orders. finally, the dealership did relent and replace the transmission. we encountered the same type of treatment with the engine burning oil, and it wasn't until the engine ran completely out of oil, that the dealer would address the problem. the first time we had complained about the oil was 2 months after we had bought the car!!!

The power windows and electronic door locks of my 2002 jetta doesn't work ? windows won't open and doors won't lock. it has to be done manually until they stopped working for two months with no signs or any warning. took the car to the dealership and suggested that a new comfort control center module is needed. since the car is no longer under warranty because it had 60,000 miles on it, the part cost $300. vw america has denied my claim and will not assist with the repair. the malfunction is believed to be a defect on the original part and i'm not liable or hold responsible for its replacement, since the failure of operation as it should be is at no fault or negligence on my behalf as the original owner of the vehicle. *la

I had both the passenger side window and the driver side window fall into the door frame within a matter of months. both times the windows were fixed, however, they were reluctant to fix the problem as if it had been my fault. i have a small child and i don't think he appreciates asphyxiation from so much wind in his face on the long drives to the dealer to be replaced. this is just one of the problems on this car, the clutch gets stuck (repaired twice), the sunroof trim broke off and needed to be replaced, the engine makes a rattling noise when shifting (fixed twice), stereo system swallowed my cd (twice before new system installed), and air conditioning releases an awful moldy smell when turned on which dealer refuses to attempt to fix. bought car in valencia volkswagen in valencia, ca. solution simple, traded in my 1yr old car for a better car, one that works! *jb

Upon purchasing a 2002 jetta gls tdi 4-door sedan (turbo-charged) on 09/13/02 and having it approx. 2 hours after the purchase, the passenger side power window made a loud pop sound when rolling it down. the window would continue to roll down fine but the further down it went, the more i heard a crunching sound. the window ended up going all the way down into the door, thus leaving my car open to theft and any unforseen bad weather conditions. the window gave no prior indication that this issue would occur. the window would not roll up whatsoever. from reports read on the internet and at the nhtsa site, this is an awfully common problem that vw should have resolved a long time ago. apparently, it's still sadly outstanding and nhtsa or other similar organization should require vw to fix this asap at no charge to the customer. nlm

Windows suddenly and inexplicably fall down into doors. if children are in the car when this occurs this is a major safety hazard (i have child safety windows in the back seats of my car and use them when my nephews are in the car). the car is open to theft and damage from the elements. this has been an ongoing problem with vw cars as i found out through talking to other customers. i consider this to be a safety issue and something the nhtsa should look into

Power window regulator failed, allowing window to fall inside door well with no warning. dealership used tape to pull up window to hold it. tape held a couple of days and window fell again while raining and parking. part replaced. currently, passenger's window did the samething. part is on national back order. *ak *slc

Passenger's side front window ground to a halt then collapsed into the door frame. window would not come back up. dealer reports this is a known issue: the teflon guide sleeves break, especially in hot climates, and allow the window to fall into the door. dealer will not replace other slides until they fail even though the vehicle has less than 1,300 miles on it! dealer claims replacement parts have been redesigned to include metal reinforcement. this is huge issue, especially since there is no warning before failure. in inclement weather the car becomes totally undrivable and cannot be secured. other model years, including 2001 jettas have the same problem. please look into this. vw should repair all four windows on all jettas with this type of window guide sleeve.

On three separate occasions the drivers side front window (2) and the passenger side front window (1) has fallen down into the door. on the first occasion the window shattered inside the door and had to be replaced. the latest incident happened on july 1st, 2002 and as of this date (7/19/02) vw has not only not repaired the car, but can't give me a date when they can because they can't locate parts to repair the assembly. the car is being driven with the dealer installed tape holding the windows up, but this doesn't work very well in the arizona sun or during monsoon season. i'd also like to add that the last time this happened my wife was driving from phoenix to tucson (as she does 4 times a week, round trip of 230 miles daily) and had to drive over 100 miles with no window in 111 degree heat. the local dealer has been great throughtout this whole exercise, but vw has not given customer service i would brag about. one more item i'd like to add - i've talked with several other jetta owners who have had the exact same problem. any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated.*ak
