Defect SummaryVolkswagen is recalling certain model year 2009 and 2010 passenger cars manufactured between september 2008 and august 2009. the wiring harness of a temperature sensor in the direct shift gearbox (dsg) may have connector wires that were insufficiently crimped. with insufficiently crimped connector wires, a temperature sensor has the potential to falsely detect a high gearbox oil temperature, causing the transmission to abruptly shift to neutral. if this happens, the selector lever position indicator within the instrument panel will flash. in addition, the depress brake pedal indicator light will be illuminated, alerting the driver to apply the brakes.
Consequence SummaryThe abrupt shift to neutral could lead to a crash without warning.
Corrective SummaryVolkswagen will reprogram the transmission control module with updated software free of charge. the recall began on october 20, 2009. owners may contact volkswagen at 1-800-822-8987.

Defect SummaryVolkswagen is recalling 25,594 my 2006-2009 jetta 5th generation equipped with 2.01 engine. the fastening screw contact surfaces on the driveshaft cover plate may not have been manufactured to factory specifications. some screws may not have been torqued properly during assembly and could loosen over time, causing a knocking sound when the vehicle is in motion. the driveshaft screws could loosen to the point where the driveshaft detaches from the gearbox.
Consequence SummaryIf the vehicle is moving when this happens, the detached driveshaft could cause damage the gearbox housing. a damage gearbox housing could leak gearbox oil onto the street and create a risk of a vehicle crash for both the driver and other motorists.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect the driveshaft screws and replace the screws free of charge. the recall began on june 24, 2009. owners may contact volkswagen at 1-800-822-8987.

PE09035VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA, INC07/17/200911/19/2009VEHICLE STALL/LOSS MOTIVE POWER09V333000
The subject vehicles are equipped with direct shift gearbox (dsg) transmissions, which feature a 6-speed automatic gearbox with two wet running clutches (dual clutch) in which the clutch mechanism and gear changes are electrohydraulically operated by a mechatronic control unit.the dsg mechatronic controller includes extensive self diagnostic functions and strategies to ensure safe operation and prevent system/component damage in the event of component failures or harsh operating conditions.the basic hierarchy of fault modes includes some that only result in the storage of a diagnostic trouble code (dtc) and cause no loss of function, some that store a dtc and reduce vehicle operation to a limp home mode, and some that store a dtc and cause an interruption of motive power (i.e., open clutch).the driver is alerted to the latter two modes by the dash gear position indicator (prnds) flashing. one of the conditions that results in interruption of motive power is excess gearbox temperature.the system initially responds to increased gearbox temperature by ramping down engine torque.if the temperature keeps rising the mechatronic unit responds by opening the clutch.in a defect information report submitted to nhtsa on august 20, 2009, volkswagen described a potential defect in the wiring harnesses of the dsg gearbox temperature sensors used in approximately 16,000 model year (my) 2009 and 2010 volkswagen (eos, jetta and gti) and audi (a3 and tt/tt roadster) vehicles equipped with dsg transmissions and built from september 2008 through august 2009 (nhtsa recall no. 09v-333, volkswagen recall no. 37e3/s7 and audi recall no 37e4/j7). volkswagen provided this description of the defect, the wiring harness of a temperature sensor in the dsg may have connector wires that were insufficiently crimped by the connector supplier during a limited production period.with insufficiently crimped connector wires, a temperature sensor has the potential to falsely detect a high gearbox oil temperature, causing the transmission to abruptly shift to neutral.if this happens, the selector lever position indicator within the instrument panel will flash.in addition, the depress brake pedal indicator light will be illuminated, alerting the driver to apply the brakes.in heavy traffic, the abrupt shift to neutral could lead to a crash without warning.volkswagen estimated that less than one percent of the recalled vehicles may contain the defect condition. odi identified 40 complaints that appear to be related to the temperature sensor defect condition described by volkswagen.volkswagen received 139 complaints related to the condition, with 7 involving vehicles reported to odi, resulting a 172 total complaints to odi and volkswagen.all of these complaints involve the my 2009 an 2010 vehicles subject to recall 09v-333. odi also identified complaints of harsh/jerky shifting in some volkswagen vehicles with dsg.volkswagen attributed this condition, which typically occurs at very low speeds, to excessive wear in the bushings of the two solenoid valves in the mechatronic unit that control clutch operation.volkswagen does not believe that the this condition is a safety defect because the changes in shift quality develop gradually over time, do not cause a loss of motive power and have not resulted in any fatalities, injuries or serious crashes (there were three reported property damage incidents resulting in minor body damage in very low speed, parking maneuvers).volkswagen addressed this problem in the field with a customer service program that includes the replacement of potentially affected mechatronic units as well as a 10 year/100,000 mile extended warranty.this investigation is closed with volkswagen's recall of the defect condition that may result in a loss of motive power while driving.

This is my second complaint on this website for the same problem with my 2009 jetta sportwagen with dsg transmission. my mechatronic unit was replaced in july 2012, but it wasn't 2 weeks before the car started back to it's old tricks again. this time the hesitating from a stop, jerking, rolling back and forth when you park, and rolling backward on an incline when shifting into drive from reverse was even worse than before the mechatronic unit replaced. this morning, while backing out of the garage (which is on a slope) when i shifted into drive and lifted off the brake the car quickly rolled back 2 to 3 feet before i could stop the car while narrowly missing our truck's bumper. we went straight to vw and as before their is no code and the fluid is at appropriate levels. there is nothing they can do... vw customer care was contacted with another case number. it appears that vw is not standing behind their warranty, so i guess we'll have to escalate to the next level. *tr

During the snow storm the clutch and the four wheel drive did not engage. i was driving slowly along with the traffic and the as the car started to acsend an incline in the road, it started to skid; and when i engaged the brakes, attempted to change gears, the clutch would not engage. when the car came to a stop, there was a odor of burning rubber. i contacted vw america about the failure, they covered the cost of the part and not the service as a customer appreciation good will gesture.

My 2009 jetta tdi engine started running rough when i pushed the clutch in while turning into a parking lot 3 weeks ago. i coasted to a parking spot and turned off the ignition. i started the car back up immediately to see if it was going to be ok and it sounded good so i shut it off. when i returned about 45 minutes later, the car started but sounded like it was running on only one or two cylinders and then died. i called a tow truck and it would not start at all when he arrived. the dealer asked if i had ever run gasoline through it. i said 'no, why would i do that?' he said that the entire fuel system needed to be replaced and that vw would pay for this 'one time' even though the warranty has run out. well, if they are at fault this time, they will be at fault the next time too. my concern is the next time. i drive on a 70 mph interstate 90 miles round trip to work 5 days a week. what are the chances that i will be lucky enough that it did not happen in traffic at that speed the first time and just where will i be when it happens again? if they are replacing this shredded high pressure fuel pump with the same model made of the same materials, it will happen again. is there ethanol being put into diesel in this country? what about the additives to diesel that are necessary for lubricity that are put in by the different companies? is one or more types of these the culprit? this problem is all over the internet and i hope that vw can come up with a permanent solution before someone is seriously injured - if it hasn't happened already. meanwhile - still waiting for my car to be returned to me.

2009 vw tdi jetta. engine runs rough, sutters at certain points and lacks power. will sometimes stall in traffic. have documented with dealers. vw america refuses to answer. vw has software fix, but will not apply it to vehicle. do people have to be killed before these people pay attention.

2009 vw jetta tdi (turbo-diesel) equipped with dsg (direct shift gearbox) transmission. vehicle prematurely downshifts from 2nd into 1st gear at slow speeds. when driving in 'tiptronic' (manual) shift mode at slow speed conditions, such as right turns, parking lots/garages, yield conditions, etc., the vehicle will downshift unexpectedly from 2nd gear into 1st after reacceleration has already begun, resulting in the engine's rpms to skyrocket. if this occurs within a turn in traffic, the vehicle's acceleration is stalled due to the lower gear. panicking, one shifts the vehicle into 2nd at the high rpms and the transmission jolts under the power and causes the vehicle to surge forward rapidly under power. this has contributed to near rear-end crash situations for both drivers following at the downshift/stall condition as well as vehicles in front at the upshift/acceleration condition. in parking lots while moderately traveling in 2nd gear looking for a parking stall, without warning, again the vehicle will sometimes downshift into first causing this braking bucking

Dsg transmission at slow speeds will suddenly downshift into 1st causing abrupt engine breaking in traffic without warning (<25mph). trying to accelerating from the slow speed or stop will causing a 1-2 second delay/jerk in traffic (narrowly avoiding being rear-ended in stop-go-traffic). *tr

While driving my 2009 vw jetta sportwagen tdi with dsg transmission 65 mph on freeway, car had approximately 1175 miles on it, sudden loss of power, felt like the car was in neutral though was still in drive. the gear indicator lights flashed and no acceleration response when accelerator depressed. gear re-engaged approximately 5 seconds later and was able to regain speed with no incident. took into vw dealer, they were unable to reproduce, but called vw tech and were told to replace the input temperature sensor on the transmission. sensor was replaced and i got the vehicle back 5 days later. appears to be running fine, no repeat of false neutral in this case, there was no accident or injury, but sudden loss of power on the interstate in traffic could very easily lead to accidents and serious injury or death. *tr

Dsg transmission is getting more frequent with the hard shifting/surging both forward and reverse and occurs usually when slowing down and then letting go of the brake upon a green light. sometimes the car will roll back if on a slight incline when letting go of the brake. vw dealership says that the dsg is a very active transmission and it is normal. i was told this on two separate occasions and going to bring my car in again until the problem is fixed...

08/25/201023000
Driving a 2009 jetta tdi - there seems to be a transmission issue with the car where the car will constantly jerk forward when stopping at a red light or starting acceleration from the light. at times, acceleration or braking on the freeway causes the car to 'shudder'. also, 3 times in the last 4 months, the car has stalled when trying to accelerate from a red light, and the clutch does not 'grab' the gear soon enough. stalling requires me to then place the car in park, turn the ignition completely off, and then restart the engine before i can continue driving. taking the car to the dealership multiple times has not yielded any findings, with the vw dealership telling me that the problems do not exist and they are not able to duplicate any issues, and that all parts of the car are up to specifications. the car is currently under 25000 miles, and was bought brand new from the dealer. continuous complaints have not gotten any

I was driving home in rush hour after work on a four-lane road, in a heavy rain storm. at mile 1,565, my car lost power, the p r n d s transmission options were blinking, the foot break icon came on, and when i pushed on the gas, my rmps increased, but no power. i was able to safely maneuver the car out of rush hour traffic, pull over on the shoulder, and sat there wondering what just happened. being that the car was new, i did not know what had happened, there was no service engine soon light come on. i put the car into park, sat there for a bit, and then put it back into drive. about 3 miles later, the transmission options blinked again. once i arrived home, i called the vw dealers service dept. where i bought the car and talked with the service manager. he never saw anything like this, told me not to drive it to the dealer (i am 100+ miles from the dealer), to have it towed to them. i am very unsatisfied with vw, jetta, and my car. i do not feel like my car is safe, reliable, or trustworthy. now, because of the instances that occurred, i will always be paranoid with my car, worrying if i will be able to safely get to and fro the places i need to be. i recently was on the interstate with an inconsiderate tractor trailer behind me not giving me a reasonable distance between me and his oversized vehicle. i was not able to change lanes for other cars were in the adjacent lane. fear came over me as i know i would be in a severe accident if the transmission decided to fail again resulting in a loss of power. there would have been no way for the oversized tractor trailer behind me to stop in time without causing an accident because the car i was driving lost power. *tr

Jetta vehicle goes into neutral on it's own (while still in drive position) and then may go back into drive. many occasion the vehicle has gone in to neutral and back. on one occasion at an intersection it would not return after shifting back and forth. i had to turn of the vehicle and restart it to have the ability to drive. the dealer found the mechatronics unit failed and spent 3+ weeks to repair. the same day i received the vehicle my wife and i experienced similar failures twice. both these incidents were coming down hill to stop. approaching the stop the car went into neutral, revved up the engine, and then went back to normal. all in a 3-4 second time frame. incidents like this have a concern for me on these cars. for one, when stopping these cars downshift to aid in the braking. a sporadic shift into neutral could scare/alarm the driver and cause an accident. i think there is something seriously wrong with these vehicles that requires intervention.*tr

There is a false neutral on the vehicle. the throttle is depressed and there is no response as far as power to the wheels. the engine responds by increasing rpms, but the power is not transferred to the wheels. this is unsafe and unsettling as you are placed in the position of not knowing when it will occur and whether one might be trying to merge or make a left turn and suddenly be without power and subject to being hit. *tr

While driving, vehicle appeared to go into neutral with no transfer of power from the engine to the drivetrain. the prnds indicator began flashing though still indicating it was in drive. the vehicle rolled to a stop and was unable to move to get off the highway. problem corrected itself briefly after turning the vehicle off then on again, but happened again shortly after resuming driving. vehicle had to be towed to the nearest dealership. dealer states it is a faulty transmission speed sensor and is awaiting a backordered part to repair it. *tr

Commuting from work, on the highway driving at approximately 65 mph, i momentarily release the gas pedal on my 2009 vw jetta tdi automatic (dsg). when i step on the gas once again to maintain speed, there is no power. engine behaves as if it is in neutral, with rpms going up with no acceleration. prnds indicator lights on dashboard blink. it takes a couple of tries of releasing then stepping on the gas pedal again for the gear to take. in the meantime, car has slowed down quite a bit in a busy highway during rush hour making for a safety hazard for me and other motorists. this has happened approximately 7-8 times since i purchased the car (1 month, 2200 miles). *tr

This is for a 2009 vw jetta tdi with a dsg transmission. the vehicle has a tremendous lag when pulling away from a stop, it also has a loud clunk and a hard jerk when coming to a stop. the vehicle has also seemed to be in neutral once and was still in drive, it would not move and the vehicle had to be restarted to move again. i have made a service appointment at my local vw dealer. *tr

New 2009 jetta tdi sedan with dsg engine. two incidents...one on the 3rd and second on the 4th of august. on the 3rd was dropping off a grandson at his mothers office. car was in park, engine idling, child exited car, i put food on brake, shifted into reverse, whereupon the car went into neutral mode, and the lit gears indicator light started blinking, while the green depress brake pedal light came on, engine raced and suddenly re-engaged reverse, lurched backward almost striking passing car. on the 4th was traveling north on a smooth highway, between 50-55 mph, when suddenly car slipped into a neutral mode while remaining in drive on the gear selector. as this happened the entire gears indicator light started blinking rapidly and the depress brake pedal before starting light came on too. engine raced to redline and car slowly coasted to a stop. as an older driver, 68 years, these two incidents alarmed me. i love the car and its overall performance, but i fear lost confidence in the car. the vw service mgr. dan is great and the dealership kempthorn moyors is high quality...i think volkswagen should replace my car or modify the warranty on the transmission and dual clutch/flywheel on the car. *tr

While driving at highway speeds the automatic transmission in my 2009 volkswagen jetta tdi slips into neutral with no warning. the transmission remains in neutral until you lift your foot off the accelerator. only then will it go back into gear. the has occurred 5 times in the 2.5 months i've own the car. i took the vehicle to the local vw dealer to explain the problem. the vehicle is there now, hopefully being repaired. *tr

I bought a new 2009 vw jetta tdi sportwagen with the dsg transmission and at 1000 miles exactly, the transmission went into neutral, all the lights blinked on the mfi, and the car coasted to a stop. i put it in park and turned the ignition off. i restarted the car and went on my way. at exactly 1724 miles, this happened again. i took the car into the dealer at 2361 miles and they are reporting that they can find nothing wrong with the transmission. *tr

We recently purchased a 2009 vw jetta tdi sportwagen which recently left my wife stranded along the highway. the incident took place on aug. 3, 2009 and the vehicle has just over 4,500 miles on it. my wife was driving at a speed of about 65 mph on i95 north when the car lost power, the engine was running and it seemed like the car just slipped into neutral. my wife put the flashers on and made it to the side of the road on a major interstate -- scary! she then put the car in park, lights were still flashing on the dash, so she then turned it off. she restarted the car and it seemed fine. she pulled back out onto the highway and about a half mile down the road it happened again, she again coasted to the side of the road and called vw. they came and towed the car to the dealership. the car is currently in the dealership waiting to get fixed. *tr

Entering traffic in 2009 volkswagen tdi sportwagon. as i applied the throttle, the car went into a false neutral, and lost power. the engine still revved, but nothing got through the transmission. all the gear indicator lights (p-n-r-d-s) on the dash flashed. i turned the car off, and restarted it, (in the intersection) and it worked fine. the happened three times while driving from seattle to san jose on 29 july. *tr

 1. driving at highway speeds in 6th gear, flat road, in cruise control. no erratic driving or fast acceleration. 2. the automatic transmission fails by falsely shifting into neutral when the transmission shifter is in drive. the prnds gear indicator on the dash began flashing when this happened. this has occurred 5 times since i bought the car on july 15, 2009. the car lost all power to the front (drive) wheels and had to be stopped on the side of the highway, then restarted for the car to return to normal operation. 3. the car has been submitted to the vw dealer's service dept. no parts have been replaced or repaired. *tr

This is a jetta sportwagen tdi with dsg automatic transmission. with dsg transmission in 'd mode, coasting at moderate speed in traffic, transmission slipped out of gear into false neutral, transmission display flashing prnds. stepping on accelerator caused engine to rev to redline, car did not speed up. this happened on two separate occasions, each time i tried repeatedly placing transmission into tiptronic mode and back into d, problem resolved within 30 seconds and transmission then functioned normally. cel did not illuminate. as this happened in light traffic, the failure only delayed vehicles behind me temporarily. i have not taken it to vw dealer yet as they have no information about the problem. tdi club forum posts suggest problem is faulty transmission temp sensor, may be more common in vehicles sold in spring 2009. *tr

2009 vw jetta tdi sportwagen: loss of drive at speed, on the highway. the car's dash board flashes the indicator lights for its automatic drive mode 'prnds' and produces no power to the wheels, despite the shifter remaining in 'd' for drive. vehicle power was restored only after coming to a full stop, shutting off the engine and restarting it. this happened only once, for us. vw checked the vehicle, found no computer generated codes and returned it to us with no change made. we believe it was unsafe to be without power on a four lane highway, with no shoulder and hope vw will identify the problem before it happens again. *tr

While driving in the fast lane at approximately 75 mph the vehicle began to act as if it were in neutral failing to deliver any power to the wheels. i struggled to get over to the shoulder and was nearly in two accidents and i think i scrubbed one of my rims on the curb, but didn't notice at the time since i was freaked out. i then had to stop and restart the car to get it to drive again. this was the sixth time in about a week that we had the car act as if it were in neutral while driving along. this was the first time that power was not regained shortly after losing power. the frustrating thing is that i had brought the car to the dealer earlier in the week complaining that a similar incident had occurred the previous week where i had lost power to the wheels but that i had regained it after 5-10 seconds. they said they could not do anything because they couldn't reproduce the problem when they test drove the car and that no errors showed up in the computer history for the vehicle. they basically said that since there were no bulletins put out by vw they couldn't do anything until the error occurred again. thankfully i was carrying my video camera in the car and my girlfriend recorded much of the incident. i am emailing the dealer today and we'll see what they have to say now. *tr

09 vw tdi sportswagen dsg will randomly shift into neutral. this has occurred at various times varying from being stopped to cruising at highway speeds. the vehicle has been in the shop twice for this problem. during the first visit, the dealer was unable to replicate the problem. the second time, we took a video of the event and showed it to the lead mechanic. the shop has determined a temperature sensor in the transmission is overheating and causing the car to slip into neutral. the part is reportedly on back order and we do not have any estimate as to when the repairs will be completed. *tr

2009 vw jetta tdi. engine stalls frequently, with delayed restart. the ecu will shut down the engine if the rpm falls, even momentarily, below some predetermined level, i observe this threshold at about 600 rpm. the key must be cycled to the off position and then back to start to restart the vehicle, but once shut down, there is a brief delay before the ecu will engage the starter, leaving the driver of a stalled vehicle in possible harms way, with the key in the start psotion waiting for the engine to restart. discussion of this problem is often obfuscated by shame, denial and recriminations about drivers ability to adequately operate a manual trans and clutch. very skilled drivers may never see the problem, but may also deny it. many drivers, new to the car, are often unable to drive the vehicle at all. i, as a moderately skilled driver, after over a year driving the car everyday, still stall the vehicle periodically. the solution is to update the firmware in the ecu so that the low rpm threshold is lower (approx 400 rpm), and/or that a short delay be added to the shut down feature so that brief transient low rpm events do not triggerthe shut down.

I recently purchased a 2009 volkswagen jetta tdi diesel car with a 6 speed manual transmission and 20,000 miles. i have notice that the car is extremely easy to stall when attempting to accelerate in first and second gears. it seems the injection timing may be too far advanced. i have driven lots of similar older model diesel cars in europe and elsewhere without any such problems. i do not know what to do to correct the problem. i have noticed that you must speed up significantly in first gear before shifting to second. the engine seems to be unable to lug at a low rpms.

Transmission spontaneously disengages while vehicle is moving. problem sometimes fixes itself immediately, sometimes the vehicle needs to be restarted in order for the problem to be cleared. the dealership is aware of the problem, but is unwilling to fix it sitting that they cannot reproduce the circumstances surrounding the problems. the dealership will only examine the problem 24 hours before i incur charges for the loaner vehicle. so far no parts have been replaced, and no work has been done beyond attempts to reproduce the problem. this problem caused a near accident at highway speeds when it occurred while the engine cruise control was engaged. after disengaging power, the engine revved to red line, the transmission then re-engaged. this problem occurs frequently, up to 3 times per week. *tr

We were heading up hill when suddenly traffic came to a crawl after a few minutes we started to smell something like burnt brake pads, we figured it was coming from the vehicles heading down hill braking friction, we did nothing of it until we pulled to the side of the road and lift open the hood then noticed that the smell was actually coming from our car engine compartment. the incident took place on a saturday, on the following monday i called vw customer support to report the incident. the representative told me to take the car to the nearest vw dealership to be inspected, the dealership mechanic made the recommendation to have the clutch replaced, vw agreed to have it replaced under warranty. however the new clutch is beginning to show the same sign of failure the car has only 6500 miles on it. i have heard from outside sources that main cause could be the dual mass flywheel it appears that this is happening to a lot of owners. *tr
