Defect SummaryVolkswagen is recalling certain model year 2009 and 2010 passenger cars manufactured between september 2008 and august 2009. the wiring harness of a temperature sensor in the direct shift gearbox (dsg) may have connector wires that were insufficiently crimped. with insufficiently crimped connector wires, a temperature sensor has the potential to falsely detect a high gearbox oil temperature, causing the transmission to abruptly shift to neutral. if this happens, the selector lever position indicator within the instrument panel will flash. in addition, the depress brake pedal indicator light will be illuminated, alerting the driver to apply the brakes.
Consequence SummaryThe abrupt shift to neutral could lead to a crash without warning.
Corrective SummaryVolkswagen will reprogram the transmission control module with updated software free of charge. the recall began on october 20, 2009. owners may contact volkswagen at 1-800-822-8987.

2010 vw jetta 2.0 tdi cup edition: entering traffic in first gear, at about 4000-4200 rpm, car had a complete loss of power. engine did not die. i pushed in clutch and power returned. this has occurred monthly with no consistency since i purchased the car in july 2010. occurs with a warm engine. cold engine. various levels of fuel, and various climate conditions. it has been taken to o'brien volkswagen, a certified repair facility, every 3-6 months to have the issue resolved. dealership can not replicate the issue and as a result has not solved the problem. problem has been witnessed by three different passengers. a secondary stalling issue occurs between 1200-1800 with light gas peddle pressure. in this case, the car has a small pause or decrease in power. down shifting and accelerating eliminates the problem. *tr

While driving on the highway with cruise control engaged at/around speed limit, i noticed the rpms jumping and could feel the car jerking, as if some kind of acceleration/deceleration was happening. i also notice rpms jump 50 up/down while idling. this seems to happen when driving down hills on cruise control, more prevalent in colder weather. no loss of control has occurred, but appears to be issue that is slowly worsening. *tr

I was driving on the highway and experienced an extreme loss of power and flashing yellow check engine light. after stopping the vehicle stalled and wouldn't restart on multiple attempts. brought vehicle to dealer who says it needs the entire fuel system replaced, due to metal shavings in the fuel delivery system caused by a bad hpfp. originally vw said it would be covered under warranty, but now are citing biofuel as a reason for the failure. i have used only b5 which complies with vw's standard policies but they have stated they believe the reason to be owner negligence and have a higher blend than b5. i only put in what the fuel stations tell me they have, i don't test my fuel before i put it in. this seems like a smoke and mirrors play by vw, attempting not to pay the claim and trying to have me shell out $10k for the repair. seems pretty ridiculous for a 2year old vehicle with such low mileage. *tr

I have a 2012 vw jetta tdi which has been acting very strange in the past 2 years. recently it has been more often and the dealer stated that this is normal. as a result, i have noticed that when the car is put in park, it wants to keep moving and going forward with a very loud clunk!!! the car is only 3 years old, although it has 172,000 miles, it is supposed to be more reliable than this. i drive 100% highway miles, no city stop and go. this has been an issue since the car was about 1 year old. the dealer is aware of this issue and stated that there is no recall on the transmission, therefore they cannot honor a repair. in addition, there are times when the indicator where it says park, drive, sport, located on the dash board, goes blank and the vehicle stays in 1st gear and will not shift. i am very concerned and have had no support whatsoever from the dealer, who should stand behind the product sold. *tr

High pressure fuel pump failed traveling 60mph, car begins to stumble (more often then every hundred miles-now less than every 5 miles), engine almost dies out multiple times, rpm drops to near zero, check engine light turns on, hundreds of mini metal flakes found in fuel system/fuel canister . car driven to dealer (showed picture of metal in fuel canister). hamilton imports (vw dealer) had initial tech on 081412 diagnosis problem as normal for diesel fuel. called 081512 to service manager john, left message, he replied stating metal in fuel is normal. on 081612 email vw of america, in regards to the problem, call from service adviser on 081712 and are looking further into the problem. later that day, called service adviser, they ordered a complete fuel system and apologized for the initial delay and not fixing the car correctly. received a call from the dealer, 082812, the car is ready for pickup. a complete new fuel system was installed (injectors, high pressure fuel pump(failed), fuel rail, electric fuel pump in tank, all piping). *tr

2010 vw jetta tdi with roughly 35,650 miles. while driving up the on-ramp to enter the interstate, glow plug dash light came on and warned to check engine now. within 20 seconds, the car lost all power, and luckily i was able to coast over to the shoulder of the interstate (with drivers flying by at 65+mph at 9:45pm). vehicle would not restart and had to be towed to the vw dealership. service rep claimed fuel contamination, with metal shards all throughout the fuel system. entire fuel system has to be replaced ($10,000 repair) with equivalent, new parts. according to vw service technicians, the parts have not been updated despite vw's knowledge of this problem. as a result, fuel contamination could happen again, and the car could shut off while driving at any time without notice. this is a very serious safety concern. luckily, because i was driving at night, there was not a lot of congestion on the road. had this happened during rush hour, there very likely would have been a severe accident. vw claims the problem is a result of the poor quality of american diesel fuel supply, saying the tdis are designed in germany to run on 100% diesel that's found in europe. if this is the case, why are they selling german designed cars in the united states that doesn't have fuel supplies that are 100% diesel? volkswagen needs to issue a recall of the 2009/2010 jetta tdi.

I purchased my 2010 jetta tdi new at the end of september 2009. it is a manual transmission. i'm a pretty conservative driver and attempt to maximize my mpg. each day after the vehicle has been setting overnight and is cold, i start up and drive to the store, a 4 mile drive, the engine will pause usually within that 4 mile drive. sometimes it is a short jerk and sometimes it is a greater jerk. other times it will happen on the return trip home. but it'll happen only once until it sets and cools off. i have had it in the shop twice with no help. my research finds some problems with the high pressure fuel pump which may be the issue, but i haven't been able to talk to vw america to see if they will confirm or deny this. this problem has happened since i've had the vehicle. it has 6,500 miles on it and i'm hoping to get it fixed before the warranty expires. not sure what will happen when the mileage gets higher.

I purchased a 6-speed manual transmission jetta-tdi at the end of december of 2009. i have been driving manual transmission cars since 1975, and i was upset that my car was stalling either just starting out in first or in the lower rpm range of the lower gears when turning and moving through intersections or trying to go uphill when the rpms were in the lower range. keeping the rpms up a bit seems to have helped, as i am not having it stall as much as before. i also noticed what seemed like a slight hesitation or jerking when cruising . it would be just for a split second and then be gone my accident occurred when i was parallel parking on a hill. i went to back up a bit to straighten out my car and it stalled, rolling forward into the car parked in front of me. fortunately, no one was injured. damage was minor, but was submitted to my insurance company. at this point i was just blaming myself for not being able to adjust to the difference of clutching with a diesel engine because i couldn't figure out how to explain it. then a heard 2 radio reports about the complaints being filed. i called vw of america who listened to my story. they told me that in order to be compensated for my accident, that i would have needed to have had the car towed immediately to a dealership and had it diagnosed. she suggested that i take it to be diagnosed. i took it to the dealer who kept it for two days and could not find anything wrong. a week later, i was coming to a stop for a red light and the rpms began to fluctuate like it was going to stall and then it would come back to normal rpms. when i started to drive it was a little rough, then smoothed out. i called vw of america who recommended that i take it back to the dealer. i am waiting for them to return my call. i have also 3 intermittent problems with my am radio cutting out--are the problems connected?

Vw jetta tdi 2010. on four occasions the car has completely died while moving slowly. (5 to 20 mph) everything in the car stayed on. i had to turn the key off. place the car in park and restart the car. there was no indication of any problems before or after the car staled out. nothing in the car turned off or on, except the radio after i turned the key to the off position. also while driving door locks started to click open and closed at 65 mph. after 10 min of random clicking the doors locked and stayed locked. airbag light came on while driving. the light went back off after 20 min or so. has not come back on. transmission is generally smooth, however at random it is very abrupt, even during gradual or steady acceleration/deceleration. car has only one driver. has only ever had correct fuel. various other electrical problems began at 300 miles. all problems are random. vw continually dismisses me. it is going into shop again on monday. from the sounds of it they do not expect to do anything to fix the car. just drive it a few days and see if a problem happens. car has put me in the middle of intersection with no control.

2010 volkswagen jetta tdi(diesel) shuts off while driving. this has happened three times to me while driving. vehicle usually start up after without difficulty. vehicle has approx 2800 miles. one time it happened in a major highway intersection. this is very dangerous. vehicle was taken to vw where repairs where supposedly made. repairs made were 02 sensor and computer update. a few days later vehicle shut down once again while driving after the vw repairs. there does not seem to be a pattern to the incidences. vehicle is currently at vw undergoing tests. another odd thing is that the factory bluetooth stereo has not worked since the first time the vehicle shut off while driving.

Tl* the contact owns a 2010 volkswagen jetta. the contact stated while the vehicle was parked and unoccupied, the vehicle rolled away and crashed into a telephone pole. the manufacturer was contacted and advised they would take the liability for the defective in the gear shift selector but the contact would be liable for the structural damages caused by the crash. the contact confirmed the vehicle has a function where the key could be removed from the ignition without the vehicle being placed in the park position. the contact believed that the manufacturer should take the liability of the structural damage that was caused by the manufacturing defect. the failure and current mileages were 3,500.

I have a 2010 vw jetta tdi with dsg automatic transmission. vehicle has 15k miles on it thus far. when pulling out onto a street from a complete stop there is a definite and hazardous hesitation before the vehicle will move forward. this issue existed since the car was new. sometimes the hesitation is very short before the car will move, other times it takes the car a moment as if the car has to think about what it is supposed to do. when i push the accelerator pedal the car just sits there! the longer hesitations are fairly frequent and are a danger to other vehicles, my family and myself. i don't trust this car to be able to quickly move out of harm's way in an emergency and also don't trust it to pull onto a street in front of any other vehicle no matter how far away the other vehicle is down the road. it's just not safe to do so! vw should be forced to address this problem and provide a fix for this common issue and complaint that can be read about on various vw forums all over the internet. no injuries yet from this issue with my vehicle because i know better than to try to pull out into oncoming traffic.

My car is a 2010 vw jetta tdi with dsg transmission. i took delivery of the car in january of 2010. during july of last year with 3000 miles on the car, i drove the car out of a parking lot on a 95 f degree afternoon. by the time i reached the exit ramp the transmission, which was in drive mode, had shifted into second gear. my intention was to cross over the near lane of traffic into the far lane going in the opposite direction. when a safe interval appeared i stepped on the throttle but the car moved ahead very slowly (into the lane of fast moving cars) pressing the throttle further had no effect. i took my foot off the throttle and pressed down again and the car responded normally. it seemed at the time that the transmission had not shifted down into first gear when i had stopped at the driveway exit. the slow speed lasted for about ten seconds and the engine did not lug. the dealer said all dsg problems had been addressed and jettas in my vin number series did not register any new transmission problems on the vw service web site. i am concerned because of the potentiol for a disastrous accident when my wife or i try to enter high speed traffic should this problem re-occur. i had called your phone line after the event and was given call reference number 281881, confirmation number 10346067. and told that i would receive a report form by regular mail but i never have so i thought i should complete the online form. thank you for your attention. r w, 1.11.11.

When 2010 vw jetta with dsg transmission downshifts engine continues to have higher rpm's creating a jerking effect when decelerating. when going from reverse to drive after coming to a complete stop vehicle engine dies. only way to start vehicle is to turn ignition off and remove key and then restart vehicle. when stoped at red light vehicle engine died upon pressing accelerater. only way to restart vehicle is to turn ignition off, remove key and then restart vehicle. failures occur at least once a day whether vehicle is warmed up or a cold engine. no common time causes failure. vehicle was brought in to dealer two times for same failure but was unable to be duplicated by dealer. third time vehicle was brought in to dealer, failure was able to be duplicated. machatronic unit was ordered for transmission but problem not yet completed. failures began at approximately 2000 miles and have continually and gradually become more extreme and frequent. vehicle now has 20000 miles.

My 2010 vw jetta dsg automatic transmission i experiance a lot of strange shifting patterns when driving the car the transmission was shifting upwards of 7000+ rpm i took it in for service and made the complaint and they loaded some new parameters in the computer to put it back to normal but i still get intermittant shifting .and when coming to a stop somtimes the car feels like its stuck in neutral meaning you step on the gas to go and theres an hesitation. i feel there is a problem with this transmission and just feel that i should report this for it could cause a safety issue if theres a sudden excelleration or the car fails to move at all when pulling out into traffic .

Tl -the contact owns a 2010 volkswagen jetta. while the contact was driving approximately 50 mph, the transmission began to hesitate in a jerking motion. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where they informed that the transmission functioned normally. in addition, on a separate occasion the transmission slipped and the gears would not shift properly. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer and the technician was unable to locate a problem. there was a recall associated with the nhtsa campaign id number 09v333000 (power train: automatic transmission). the recall specified that the vehicle must be manufacturered between september 2008 and august 2009. the vehicle production year was not included in the recall. the contact experienced the identical safety defect as mentioned in the recall. the vehicle had not been repaired. the failure mileage was 380. js

I was pulling into a parking space with a new 2010 wolfsburg jetta i had my foot on the brake when it accelerated unexpectedly over a decorative divider. the car did not respond to repeated attempts to stop it. i used two feet and was literally off my seat trying to control the car. it finally stopped. i was lucky no pedestrians or myself and passenger was injured. vw supposedly checked the car and said it is operational;however at the first they said many codes came up but noone would tell me what the codes were. this car had 345 miles and i think it is unsafe to drive the computer overode what i was wanting the car to do.

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) i purchased a new 2010 vw jetta se on 1/28/10. vin [xxx] . current mileage on vehicle is less than 1300 miles. car has a automatic - dsg transmission. in mid may of 2010 i began having severe problems with the transmission locking into 3, 4 gears while in drive especially when entering traffic from a start.. this creates a severe power reduction from a start and can be life threating, and cause involvement in broad side accident while entering the flow of traffic. transmission also jolts and bolts when driving, and when placing in reverse or drive from a start. the car has shifted in neutral once while driving. i have had at least 15 occurrences since may 12th. when the situation happens i have to pull off the road and stop and wait for a safe condition to pull out in third (locked) gear. i cannot duplicate the problem at will it just occurs without warning. sometimes the problem seems to reset to normal if you turn off the ignition and wait 5-10 min before restarting. vw/audi have had numerous reports of problems with this dsg transmission. had a problem with my 2008 gti and the metronics which vw sent out a safety bulleting and replaced the unit last july. this problem is far worse than rough shifting it's life threating. had a real scary incident yesterday, locked into third and then jumped into neutral, had to coast to burm. car is currently today in the dealership as i will not drive it until the problem is corrected. they will investigate the problem and check for error codes etc. i do not have a problem with the dealership have been a customer since 2000 and have owned 6 vw's since. the problem is with the dsg transmissions in vw's they are not safe. i have also advised vw at their customer care site and who knows what they are doing???? incident date is the start of the problem i would appreciate your assistance with this matter. thank you. *tr

I have a 2010 us version volkswagen jetta tdi with the dsg transmission. the car has around 4500 miles on the odometer and this problem has been with the car since day #1. the problem is manifested as a lurching, and erratic shifting of the transmission in gears 1 to 2 as well as from a stop. even though i drive with a soft touch, i can rarely get a smooth start-off because of the unpredictable shifting of the transmission. especially noticeable in stop & go driving, i am concerned that this phenomena may cause an accident while commuting to/from work. *tr

On a 2 lane road attempting to pass a vehicle there was a sudden jerking and bucking of the car. for a moment there was no power to wheels. the actions threw me forward into the seatbelt. after a few violent seconds it regained power and i was able to pass the other vehicle. there is also harsh downshifting of the gears as i approach a stop. it is as if i have slammed on the brakes. this action also throws myself and passengers forward. *tr

I received the following priority 1 warning light: transmission overheated: stop! owners man, after stopping in front of my residence to retrieve mail. this is the second time in a month i have received the warning (refer to odi no. 10283957 for initial incident). i turned vehicle off and then on again several times but the warning light remained on. the vehicle had no acceleration in both drive and reverse while the warning light was active. the vehicle was towed to the nearest vw dealership and is currently undergoing diagnosis. as far as the initial incident on 9/13/2009, vw reported they could not find any problems with the vehicle, that no fault/error codes were found. their remedy was to reset the basic settings and road test the vehicle - they kept the vehicle for 3 weeks. i had the vehicle back for 2 days before the second incident occurred. *tr

On sunday, sept. 13, 2009, while traveling up a hill on an interstate highway at approximately 70-75 mph, my 2010 vw jetta tdi (auto. transmission) suddenly and without any warning flashed a transmission overheat warning light and i immediately lost power to the accelerator. fortunately, i was able to get the vehicle to the highway shoulder without causing a major traffic incident. after turning the vehicle engine off and letting it site for a few minutes, i restarted the vehicle and had no additional malfunctions or warning lights. however, i did make an effort to keep the vehicle's speed at or below 70 mph. based on similar reported incidents i researched on the web, i can positively confirm that my vehicle switched into neutral when i received the warning light. on monday, sept. 14, 2009, i brought the vehicle to the service department of the vw dealership where i had purchased it and was informed that the problem would be looked into. *tr

2010 jetta tdi manual transmission--clutch stalls dangerous due to new clutch response combined with diesel turbo lag. when i purchased my new car, the salesman at vw of langhorne, pa, was certain that i would kill the clutch on the first drive as had all other people who purchased a manual 2010 tdi. the clutch response is somehow different than any other car and after adding the diesel turbo lag, it makes for a dangerous first acceleration. to my salesman's surprise, i did not stall the car when i drove it off the lot. however, i have since stalled it several times in traffic. when the clutch stalls, driver must completely turn off ignition and turn it back on before attempting to clutch-drive again. this is a known issue among 2010 manual tdi owners and one frequently discussed because it is very dangerous. some owners on tdi club list server are changing out their own clutches to stay alive. i am an excellent stick driver with 25 years experience in many vehicles. something needs to be done about this clutch issue before people get killed. it's not my driving problem or my particular car's problem--it is a problem with all 2010 manual tdi clutch starts. i cannot let anyone else drive my car, even my own husband (who drives a 2003 manual tdi golf), because i am afraid he will get killed pulling out in traffic as clutch stalls are frequent with the 2010 manual tdi jetta model--even after you get used to it. i previously owned a 2001 manual tdi jetta and drove it for 10 years with no clutch complaints. i stall the 2010 clutch at least once per day. when my husband has attempted to drive it, he stalled it five times in a row the first drive, and in subsequent drives stalls it every other pull out. the problem is most dangerous when leaving a driveway, parking lot, or making a left turn with what would normally be enough space in the flow of traffic, but what is not enough when the clutch stalls the car.

I've had 3 automobiles since 1986 with manual transmissions and don't recall a stalling problem like i'm having now with my vw 2010 jetta tdi. it started with a test drive and a number of times after purchase. i assumed my motor skills would adapt and the problem would become less frequent. however, the problem persists, specifically at intersections when pulling away from a complete stop, a rolling stop, or when braking/clutching hard. it also happens when i try to slowly go over bumps or up hills. the most recent incident resulted in slight damage to my car. i was leaving a condo garage in which i had to go up a steep driveway, through an automatic garage door and out an alley with a speed bump just outside the door. the combination of the driveway, bump and a tight left turn meant that i had to generate rpms initially, but then had to taper down immediately. my front wheels made it over the bump, but my car stalled and i was not able to at least coast my rear wheels over the bump. essentially i was stuck in such a spot that my car cleared the door's beam but a part of my trunk was still in the path of the closing door. in a panic i tried to start the car, but another nuisance got in the way. you have to turn the key backward before turning the ignition on again. that awkward feature caused me to fumble as it had on other occasions and it took me that much longer to get the car started. the door hit my car. this issue is at least frustrating, but at most, especially at intersections, it can be dangerous. i
