Defect SummaryVolkswagen is recalling certain model 2009-2012 jetta and jetta sportwagen vehicles, manufactured from may 2008 through september 2011, model year 2010-2012 volkswagen golf vehicles, manufactured from may 2009 through september 2011, and model year 2010-2012 audi a3 vehicles, manufactured from september 2009 through september 2011, that are equipped with a 2.0l tdi common rail diesel engine/clean diesel engine. the fuel injection pulses could coincide with the natural frequency of the injector line #2, in specific load and rpm conditions. this resonance creates additional stress in the fuel line.
Consequence SummaryDue to the resonance condition, injector line number 2 could develop small cracks which could lead to fuel leakage. leaking fuel in the presence of an ignition source, may lead to a fire.
Corrective SummaryVolkswagen will install an improved fuel injector line for the number 2 cylinder on certain vehicles and will install vibration dampers on all of the injector lines. volkswagen and audi will notify owners to have the vehicles repaired free of charge. the safety recall is expected to begin during november 2011. owners may contact volkswagen at 1-800-822-8987.
NotesVolkswagen recall campaign number is 23j9/v5 & 23j8/k5.owners may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to http://www.safercar.gov .

PE11023VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA, INC08/02/201112/02/2011Diesel Fuel Injector Line Leakage
By letter dated october 3, 2011, volkswagen group of america, inc. (vw) notified the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) that it will conduct a safety recall to address a defect in approximately 168,275 model year (my) 2009-2012 volkswagen jetta, jetta sportwagen, golf, and audi a3 vehicles equipped with the 2.0l tdi common rail clean diesel engine (nhtsa recall no. 11v-490).the recalled jetta and jetta sportwagen vehicles were built from may 2008 through september 2011, the golf vehicles were built from may 2009 through september 2011, and the audi a3 vehicles were built from september 2009 through september 2011.according to volkswagen, in u.s. applications of the above cited tdi vehicles including engine codes cjaa and cbea, the fuel injection pulses could coincide with the natural frequency of the injector line #2 in specific load and rpm conditions.this resonance creates additional stress on the fuel line which a small number of parts (based on the statistic spread of line strength) cannot withstand over its lifetime.as a contributing factor, vw indicated that a supplier used tube material with scratch marks from a grinding process during certain production periods.lines manufactured in these periods were installed in vehicles produced in the following 10 months:december 2008, january-february 2009, october 2009, march-april 2010 and september-december 2010.injector lines using this material exhibit a significantly higher failure rate.dealers will replace injector line #2 in all vehicles built in these months.in addition, as a precautionary measure, all recalled vehicles will have vibration dampers installed on all four fuel injector lines.analysis of nhtsa complaints, vw complaints, vw field reports and warranty claims found allegations of injector line leakage in 443 subject vehicles.the leaking line was not identified in 62 of the vehicles.for the 381 that did provide information about which injector lines were leaking and/or replaced, 358 (94%) involved an injector line #2 leak/repair.almost three-quarters of the injector line #2 leak/repair incident vehicles were built in the 10 months identified by vw, which accounted for approximately one-quarter of the recalled vehicles.the failure rate for injector line #2 in vehicles built in the 10 months affected by the supplier line scratching issue is 6.0 incidents per thousand vehicles (iptv).the failure rate for injector line #2 in other production months of recalled vehicles is 0.8 iptv.the leak/repair rates for the other injector lines are all well under 1 iptv.the action taken by volkswagen is sufficient to resolve the issues raised by this investigation. the agency will continue to monitor this issue and reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances. accordingly, this investigation is closed.
PE11023VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA, INC08/02/2011Diesel fuel injector line leakage
The office of defects investigation has received 7 complaints alleging leakage from the fuel line to the #2 fuel injector in model year (my) 2011 volkswagen jetta vehicles equipped with 2.0l tdi common rail diesel engines.the common rail fuel system in the subject vehicles operates at extremely high fuel injection pressure (up to 1,800 bar/ 26,000 psi). the incident mileages range from 2,470 to 7,764 miles.the office is also aware of a single complaint alleging leakage from the #2 fuel injector line in a my volkswagen golf vehicle equipped with a 2.0l tdi engine. a preliminary evaluation has been opened to assess the scope, frequency and potential safety consequences of the alleged defect.

Approximately a year ago, my engine began to give a clear sense of the car shuddering or rocking back and forth. while sometimes the feeling would occur even when stopped at a light, the vast majority of the time this occurred while i was driving at consistent low speeds. in almost all cases, i was attempting to maintain a consistent speed around either 13pmh or 30 mph. eventually, i found the rocking motion very easy to reproduce. i'd set the car to 30 mph via cruise control and drive down a straight road with very slight upward and downward slopes. while it happens even on flat ground, i found that a slight decline is most likely to reproduce the feeling. my best guess is that there's something about the way the fuel supply system/transmission is trying to determine whether or not diesel needs to be supplied to the engine. the fuel supply system seems to almost cut out because giving diesel would produce a speed too high, and then it comes back on suddenly, because giving it no diesel would cause the car to slow too much. while sometimes this is simply a nuisance, i have had on many occasions felt that it was a genuine safety hazard since i couldn't predict how the engine would react. this in combination with overly strong engine break when letting off of the accelerator and delayed acceleration when stepping on the peddle that can cause inconsistencies and safety hazards when maneuvering in stop and go traffic on the highway. i've mentioned this problem every single time i've taken my car in for it's regularly scheduled maintenance. the vehicle has a diesel dsg engine, and as i've been told by service technicians and representatives, some of the things like strong engine breaking are associated with this type of engine. however, the car's rocking motion certainly goes beyond anything that could realistically be considered normal and safe. *tr

Tdi diesel jetta with 30,000 miles by original owner was being driven 35 mph city secondary streets, vehicle abruptly lost power. coasted to side of road. police were called, they ascertained that location was safe enough until tow. towed to dealer. dealer said fuel pump had failed. vehicle had been to dealer a few days before for 30,000 mile service. diesel fuel almost always purchased at same 3 yr old busy station, and car was running on same tank of fuel as when it was serviced. there was no warning of problems, no hesitation, no loss of power, no warning lights before total shutdown of engine. on a freeway, this could have been very dangerous. *tr

Car engine stopped suddenly while driving. drifted to side of road; car would not restart. had to pay $250 for tow to dealer. service person called to say there was metal in my fuel system/tank, but they didn't know what was wrong. he also accused me of putting the wrong gas in my car. i informed service person that it took 5 seconds on the internet to learn about the nhtsa investigation into the many high pressure fuel system failures that cause engine to stop running. interestingly, he called back 2 hours later and acknowledged that fuel system and powertrain and other stuff need to be replaced. this is an unsafe car. i could have been going 65 on the freeway with a small child or other people in the car, all of whom could have been seriously injured when car suddenly looses all power and momentum. many online complaint reports are for second failures, after repair. i do not trust the service dept. of any volkswagen dealer and have no confidence that the problem is eliminated. i am afraid to drive the car. *tr

2011 jetta tdi diesel - second occurrence of engine stall due to high pressure fuel pump (hpfp) failure while driving at 40 plus miles per hour. car stalled and would not restart and had to be towed to dealer. this is the second time that this car has been towed due to a defective design which results in the high pressure pump failing sending debris throughout the system. nhtsa says in concluding statements dated 12/21/12 that (nhtsa recall no. 11v-490)

High pressure fuel pump failure confirmed by vw dealer. was driving 35 mph when car began to lose power, engine malfunction light (yellow coils) lit up and car lost all power. malfunction light went off and alternator and catalytic converter lights came on. car could not be restarted and was taken directly to dealer on flatbed. repairs are underway. *tr

Driving 55mph car began loosing power check engine and glow light indicator lights cam on immediately. once arrived home we verified the car computer it returned that there was low pressure in fuel line and that the catalytic converter was failing. we had car towed to nearest dealership. after 4 days dealer stated fuel had traces of gasoline, this is not possible i have never put gas in my diesel car. i immediately began making phone calls and the fuel companies where fuel purchased for last 5 fuelings where requested. last purchase from sheetz hagerstown i notified them what dealership was proposing the corporate office immediately contacted the dealership 'sharretts' and requested proof of their blame. once i have made contact to sheetz and shell they inturn call dealership the dealer stated that there was metal shavings noted in addition to the fuelrail system failure. on third call today they were not sure it was covered and a fuel test was being sent out for official testing to determine the presence of gasoline contamination. after i threatened a lawyer they state will call corporate for direction and have rep review. vw has continuously lied to many owners that the diesel was contaminated when in fact it is not, this should not be allowed my car is only 1 year old purchased new with only 4 miles on it i have made all the scheduled maintenance checks and had 3 recalls fixed within 7 months of ownership. i demand an investigation and an extended warranty on these diesel motors this is not fair to the consumer. *tr

I was doing my 20k service (diesel fuel filter). when i opened the fuel filter housing i found metal shavings in, and on top of the fuel filter cartridge. i had the car towed right to a vw dealership knowing that there is a major issue, and ongoing investigation with the nhtsa on hpfp failures. vw agreed that they saw metal in the fuel and on the filter, and proceeded to tell me that this was not abnormal. that every tdi car they service has metal bits in the filter. i am a ase master tech in a high volume local repair shop that deals in a very high volume of diesel repair service. metal in fuel is not normal. there is only one place for the metal to come from, and that is the hpfp. vw put a new filter in the car and sent me on my way. i guess i have to wait for the car to stop dead in traffic and not restart to do anything about it. *tr

As i was driving my 2011 jetta tdi sportswagon, i noticed a steam coming from under the hood, and diesel smell inside of the vehicle. when i opened the hood there was diesel all over the engine and belts, and large amount of steam was coming out. when i took of the engine cover and started the car i noticed that there was a leak in the 2nd cylinder injector pipe. i do not have warranty on the vehicle, but this issue should be fixed and paid by vw. there is smell in the vehicle, foam is soaked with diesel, and belts might have less life in them. please address this issue so this would be fixed at no cost to me. *tr

I was approaching a highway intersection, and the vehicle's glow-plug light came on. the engine immediately shut down, and i was able to stop just short of the intersection. the vehicle would not start again. aaa took the vehicle to the local dealership via flatbed. the dealership initially thought the problem was water in the fuel, but after flushing the fuel system, the vehicle still would not start. at that point, they took apart the fuel pump, and discovered that the pump had failed internally, and put metal shavings into the fuel system. repair quote was approximately $10,000. *tr

While driving at 75 mph on the highway the vehicle lost power. the check engine light began flashing, as did the dpf light and the pre-heat coil light. i was able to get the vehicle off the highway and into a driveway before it quit. would not start again. had vehicle towed to dealership the next day. was informed that the hpfp failed, and that the pump and fuel distribution system had to be replaced. service director indicated that the repair bill would be $10-11,000. vw is covering the cost of the repair. am grateful that i had dropped my wife and young daughter off at home, and that i was not in heavy traffic when this occurred. *tr

On friday, april 15th at approx 10:30pm i was driving my 2011 vw jetta tdi (with less than 1800 miles on it) on the highway approx 2 1/2 hours from home and it stalled. i coasted off to the shoulder and was not able to restart the engine. after nearly 2 hours the tow truck arrived that vw roadside assistance sent and the car was towed to the nearest dealership which was about 60 miles away from the breakdown point. i had to spend the night in a hotel in a strange area. on monday, april 18th the dealership stated an outstanding electrical recall was the problem. they changed a wire harness and some fuses and the car was ready for pick up. i drove 100 miles to retrieve my car on april 18th. today on april 19th after sitting in my driveway overnight the car would not start again and was towed to the nearest vw dealership in my home town. still waiting for waiting for a diagnosis. the dealership states they only have 1 vw technician and he is on vacation through friday april 22nd.

I have a 2011 vw jetta sedan, purchased in january of 2011. i had a fuel injector failure, causing diesel fuel to spray within the engine compartment of my vehicle and fuel to leak onto the roadway as i was driving. there was no vehicle warning lights indicating any failure or leakage other than a fuel smell. when i parked my car in my driveway and turned off the vehicle my husband noticed feul leaking out of the vehicle. i am very concerned about the safety of this vehicle as the vehicle and i could have caught on fire at any time.

Bought my jetta tdi new 4 months ago. filled up with diesel on a monday morning and had driven approximately 70 miles before i had this problem. was driving home tuesday (at 60mph) when suddenly lost acceleration and glow plug light started flashing. was able to limp to a vw dealership about 1 mile back but car would not accelerate above 35mph. the next day the dealership gave the diagnosis of water in the diesel and told me everything that the diesel had touched would have to be replaced (fuel tank, lines, filter, etc.) .they said the vw warranty would pay for it this one time but if it happened again i would be responsible for the over $5000 cost. when i asked how i could avoid this in the future i was told i just needed to purchase my diesel from a reputable place. (seriously!!! do they think i am buying bubba's home brewed biodiesel on the side of the road or something???) i reported to the texas dept of agriculture that the vw dealership was claiming the diesel i had purchased on monday had water in it. the tda promptly came out and investigated the station where i purchase fuel and reported to me that they found nothing wrong with the diesel. this sounds to me like a major oversight on the part of vw if there is no way to avoid such a potentially dangerous and costly problem. i traded a much nicer and more comfortable suv for this jetta in an attempt to save $$$ on fuel. i think i've made a huge mistake.

On 9/9/2011 while driving on ca 91 fwy, i started noticing abnormal drop in the fuel tank, by moniting my dashboard, at the time i had half tank of fuel. i stopped the car on a safe location, and discovered a fuel leakage underneath the trunk. the fuel was completely drained, and i had to call for volkswagen road side assistance to tow the vehicle to the nearest dealer. the vehicle was towed to a volkswagen dealer in garden grove, ca. the dealer investigated it the problem, and acknowledged that the problem was due to probable assembly line fault. the dealer ordered new parts, and fixed the problem, unfortunately, the fuel smell still exist, but i can't see leakage.

Crack in supply line to #2 injector. fuel spray all over back of engine/engine compartment and onto ground while driving, fuel mist/film all over back of car. engine control failure warning light came on. stopped to investigate, noticed diesel smell, but didn't see anything else (it was dark). restarted, light no longer illuminated. after about 2 miles, light came back on along with check engine warning light. i was close to home, so i came on to the house. there i noticed a stronger diesel smell, the film on the back of the car. got flashlight and noticed the fuel dripping and the fuel in the engine compartment. called vw 24 hour roadside assistance and had the car towed to nearest dealer on the next morning, a saturday. their diagnosis (monday) was cracked fuel line. i asked which cylinder/injector, she said #2. i asked them to save parts and to document and informed them that there was an investigation. the repair should be completed by end of day on tuesday. part had to be over-nighted from somewhere else.

While driving on the highway we started to smell diesel fuel. when we stopped we noticed fuel dripping from the car. volkswagen was contacted to come tow the car to the nearest dealer. before they would tow the car they requested that i have the fire department come out and certify the car safe to tow. once the dealer diagnosed the problem they stated one of my o rings had weekend causing a #2 injector line leak. they replaced the part, cleaned up the car and returned it to me.

Vehicle will accelerate and decelerate upon acceleration at a stop sign, or most often when traveling at 25-45 mph. suspect link to recent investigation into fuel line leakage. service manager at dealership has stated he feels as though he has been hit from behind at and mph up to freeway speeds in his 2011 jetta tdi.

While on an out of state road trip. we stopped at a fuel station and smelled a really strong diesel smell. thinking there was just diesel spill at the fuel station we continued on our way on the interstate. approx. 30 miles later down the interstate our glow plug light started to blink, which indicated a problem with the engine. we went to the nearest exit and stopped the car. when we got out the diesel smell was even stronger. smoke was coming from the hood and diesel was heavily dripping from the whole underside of the vehicle. the vehicle was towed to a dealership in oregon. the dealership told me it was a #2 fuel injector leak and that volkswagen wants them (the dealership in oregon) remove the entire engine and send it to germany for examination on a test stand. three weeks after the car was towed to the oregon dealership they called me and informed me i could come get it. i drove back to oregon to get the car and it still smelled extremly strong of diesel and the exterior was still covered in the diesel that leaked from the engine. i asked the service department to change the fiber engine cover. they told me there was no reason to do that and would have to get that approved. i drove the car back home to california and then called volkswagen of america to get my car fixed right. they had me bring it to the dealership i bought it from in roseville, ca. roseville volkswagen service worker identified the car have a strong diesel smell just walking near the car. they wrote on the service ticket that they found the fiber engine cover soaked with diesel fuel. roseville volkswagen had the car for nine more days to clean and detail the inside and outside of the car.

1 recently purchased a (2011) vw jetta at chapman volkswagen in tucson, arizona.it seemed to run well the first day i drove it,but on the second day of purchase i made u-turn to proceed onto the highway and it mysteriously decelerated. i pulled the vehicle over as i was going onto the on-ramp and noticed that the low fuel light was lit. what stuck me as being most peculiar was that the regular fuel gauge was reading nearly half full. the vehicle did not stall and the gauge returned to normal functioning, but it left me with questions about the safety of the vehicle. i was wondering if other similar vehicles had similar issues and if they were resolved. the representatives at the dealership are not returning my calls and have offered no explanation for the incident.
