In july 2010, the agency opened pe10-027 to investigate allegations of coil on plug (cop) ignition coil fires in my2002-2003 vw passat vehicles.the investigation was upgraded in january 2011 to include all my2001-2007 4-cylinder vw passat, gasoline, turbo-charged vehicles.based on the analysis of vw's response, and including odi's consumer complaints, odi has since identified 135 unique engine fire reports attributable to the cop coils.after further review of the details as contained in each report, odi determined that 43 of the 135 fire reports were actual fire/flame incidents, 83 fire reports were thermal events (smoke, spark, heat or wire melt), and another 9 fire reports were undetermined in severity due to the lack of information.these cop coil fires were characterized as initiated from within the cop coil circuit located at the top of the engine block and below the plastic engine cover.the fires observed were contained in the engine compartment and did not reach into the passenger compartment in contrast to those caused by an overheated catalytic converter examined in odi
EA11002VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA, INC01/26/2011Engine Compartment Fire
Odi has received 14 complaints alleging that a fire started in the engine compartment of the vehicle that may be related to ignition coil failure, and 21 complaints of ignition coil failure that did not result in a fire.reports state that the vehicle hesitated or lost power, and the check engine or dashboard lights illuminated.the vehicles were repaired by replacing the faulty ignition coil(s). some of the complaints indicated that the ignition coils were replaced more than once.the scope of pe10-027 focused on model years (my) 2002-2003 passat vehicles and volkswagen provided data regarding their analysis of the vehicle fires and faulty ignition coils for these vehicles.however, based on consumer complaints, odi also requested and received data from volkswagen regarding my2006-2007 passat vehicles.the failure report for this engineering analysis contains data for my 2002-2003 and my 2006-2007 vehicles.odi needs to further investigate this issue.to facilitate the acquisition and analysis of additional information, this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis.odi is expanding the scope to include my 2001-2007 passat vehicles.

Oil pump bolt broken as in the other vw passats from 2006 & 7 and reported on this site. damaged timing chain cover, timing chain and a number of other parts. car was serviced and inspected 5,000 miles previously. all service up to this point completed per owners manual at vw dealer. this problem is covered extensively at http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4321376-**official-24v-3.6l-engine-%28oil-pump-bolt%29-failure-thread** as well as http://www.passatworld.com/forums/74-volkswagen-passat-b6-discussion/327507-3-6-oil-bolt-failure-reference-material.html. not only is this a potentially dangerous and known problem involving failure of mechanical systems, but extremely expensive to repair. i received a quote for $6300 for a car with 78,000 miles. this is a known problem on 3.6l v6s that is being ignored by vw of america who refused to help even cover replacement parts. *tr

My car is exhibiting the same problems that many other consumers are experiencing. the engine oil pump bolt fails and backs-out, which can sheer off the bolt and cause the engine to experience catastrophic failure. my epc light, engine light, as well as exclamation light are on. the car has very little power, and although it does run, the acceleration needed to drive the car makes it dangerous. the issues has been highlighted by many consumers and have contacted the person noted at the bottom of this post: http://www.passatworld.com/forums/74-volkswagen-passat-b6-discussion/327507-3-6-oil-bolt-failure-reference-material.html the cost to replace this part is on average $2000.00. this is a manufacturing issue and has been reported by many people. vw has yet to issue a recall for the problem and i am awaiting a response from [xxx] or [xxx] about the issue. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Like many others, the oil bolt in my transmission sheared-off. apparently vw is aware of the design flaw and has manufactured a replacement bolt, but vw still expects unsuspecting owners to pay $1,000's to replace it. i bought the car as a certified used car from vw on 9/11/10 and was not told of this issue. this issue needs to be addressed in a recall if vw will not warn customers or fix the issue on their own. http://www.passatworld.com/forums/74-volkswagen-passat-b6-discussion/327507-3-6-oil-bolt-failure-reference-material.html. *tr

While driving on a busy highway in philadelphia pa (schuylkill expressway), my 2006 vw passat 3.6l 4 motion lost power and limped to the side of the road almost causing several accidents in the process. after taking the auto to two different non-dealer specialist and then a vw dealer - all three stated that the default code (p0016 -008-incorrect correlation - mil on) meant that the oil pump bolt failed and caused the engine to go into limp mode. one specialist said i was lucky to get to 110,000 miles as most of these bolts fail at a range from 60,000 to 70,000 and that this bolt that was used being of poor quality will, and has caused catastrophic engine failure and could cause a loss of power and a rear end collision - all three (the two non-dealer and the vw dealer service manger were well aware of the problem, stated it was common on 2006/2007 passat and as more and more of these 2006/2007 get older - more will fail and could cause accidents or worse. i would like to know if an investigation could be done and a recall established. there is a wide range of repair cost, potential for property damage and ultimately loss of life for a $5.00 bolt that the manufacturer knows is flawed and will not fix it. *tr

It's very common knowledge that the model year 2006 and 2007 3.6 engines have a fatal flaw. the oil pump bolt as installed from the factory was either specified wrong, installed wrong, or has some other defect. the engine lost power and check engine light came on. i got misfiring codes in all cylinders. the engine in my car was replaced at 11k acording with vw records because of this same issue that resulted in an fatal engine failure. the issue is the bolt that hold the oil pump in place. it comes loose or brakes in half. vw needs to recall this since it is a factory issue.

2006 vw passat 3.6l 4motion, 81k miles. check engine light (cel) and electronic power control (epc) lights came on at cruising speed. codes pointed to a cam/crank timing issue. access to timing chain on this model/trim requires removal of transmission. upon removal, technician discovered that the oil pump bolt had completely sheared off which could have led to complete engine failure; the only thing keeping the oil pump assembly in place was the cover. the oil pump bolt for this model/trim appears to be defective.
05/01/201291000
Driving car normally then check engine light and epc light came on and engine lost power and failed to shift normally. brought to vw dealer who told me that the oil pump bolt had worked itself loose and ruined the valve timing chains and adjusters and oil pump. vw of north america failed to accept any resposability for the failure and refused any monetary help with the repair that is estimated to be $3500.

Oil pump bolt backed out/broke causing engine damage. car loss oil pressure fortuantely was near an exit to avoid the engine completely stopping in the middle of the highway getting involed in a potential dangereous wreck. dealer says it will cost $11,000.00 to replace engine. vw knows this is an issue but wil nto take any responsibility. they would not do anythinmg seeing i am outside the warraty and stated would not do a thing because i am the second owner. only had this car for two years and bought it as a pre-certified oned used vehicle from the vw dealership. i have searched on line and many other owners have had this issue. link to view numereus issue http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4321376-**official-24v-3.6l-engine-(oil-pump-bolt)-failure-thread**. also another link: http://www.passatworld.com/forums/74-volkswagen-passat-b6-discussion/331097-oil-pump-bolt-failure-74k-miles.html this is a serious issue and we the consumers a re paying for it

Bolt failure in cam system, commonly known as the oil pump bolt failure. the check engine & epc lights came on. the engine went into it's safe mode, limiting acceleration and power. the vehicle was under warranty & taken to the dealer. the dealer confirmed the bolt failure and repairs were made and covered by warranty. the repairs took approximately 1 month to make. major components replaced were as follows: 2 - timing chains oil pump gears oil pump bolt timing chain cover tensioners software update the repairs required the removal of some major components, including the intake manifold, valve cover, transmission and side covers. in my case, the timing chain cover prevented the timing chain system from completely falling apart. if this had happened, it would have been complete destruction of the internal components of the engine requiring complete replacement of the engine. my vehicle was approximately 3 weeks and 2000 miles inside the warranty period. in fact, my warranty ran out while the vehicle was at the dealer for the repairs.

I noticed that i was receiving notifications to change the oil more often prior to 3000 miles. when i went to dealership to determine why i was told that the car should not require an oil change usually until 6000 miles. i was totally baffled because i am barely making the 3k mark. so, after another oil change shortly 3000 miles...i got the notification to shut off engine, oil level too low. i panicked and had the car towed to the dealership. they said it was alright and some car asorb more than others. a few weeks later, i received notification of a check engine light. this was supposedly the cam shaft. this was replaced in feb 2011. continously i experienced the low oil level and have had it monitored. the check engine light came on the next day after it was monitored. the dealership is unable to determine why i am experiencing this issue. i went to a local auto store who stated it was the cam shaft. at halls volkwagen, a volskwagen specialist was there at the time and suggested that they clean my engine completely. this was one week ago and guess what, the check engine light is back. i went back to another auto store who confirmed again it was the cam shaft. yes, there is an extended warranty on the cam shaft. this is twice in a year it will require replacing? my warranty is about to end. im not coming out of pocket to get a cam shaft every year. something else has to be wrong. also, i would like it noted that i purchased this car at car max. the car fax stated that the car was not in any accidents. the driver side door has been replaced and has the sticker information from when it was replaced. i think that i was mislead about the state of this vehicle. total check engine lights since purchase - 9 total notifications to shut off engine due to low oil level 9. *tr

In august, my check engine light had been coming on and off for about two weeks. i made an appointment at the dealership. they found several faults and recalls (my car only had 39,000 miles) and told me that the repairs would be around $800. i paid this amount only for the light to come on about a week later. i called the dealership to make another appointment but the light went off and stayed off about a month and was told to try changing or tightening the gas cap. i did both, however, the problem persisted. the light came on again and stayed on and in november, i brought the car back. i was told there was a problem with the cam shaft and that the car was no longer safe to drive because the cam shaft attached to the high performance fuel shaft was completely worn through. additionally, the part is on back order for a few weeks!!! obviously vw is aware of this issue and has done nothing to notify owners. i have been to the same dealer three times and was only told recently after complaining about several strange noises and engine light issues. 1) how did you not see this before? 2) if this was covered by the warranty, then why didn't it get fixed the first time? i believe that the original problem was caused by this camshaft issue and i was ripped off. *tr

*tr

I've encountered lots of issues with my vehicle and am very tired of taking it to the shop like it is an old piece of junk. this time i have a noise which is coming from the underhood. it's a clicking noise that is very unusual. i took it to the shop but they wern't able to identify the problem. and i also found that i am not the only one having that noise, there are tons of people with the same exact problem that posted their same problem online. there should be a recall on this.

Lost most of power while driving on highway. drove vehicle (2006 passat 3.6l) to vw dealer where they diagnosed a timing chain issue. vw dealer claimed they would fix engine for $5000, used replacement for $8000, or new engine for $10,500... after hearing that good news, towed vehicle to local vw pro who also diagnosed timing chain issue, and was given the go-ahead to fix. problem isolated to intermediate shaft bolt, which had backed out, allowing timing sprockets to wander. bolt itself is nearly sheared in half - good thing we stopped when we did. bolt was also rubbing on timing chain cover, and would have likely broke or ground thru timing chain cover. this problem was corrected by my local vw guy for $3300, which included all oem parts, new water pump, plus plugs. imho, this is a serious safety issue for owners which may experience this problem. minimal research on the web indicates i'm not the only one with this issue. the loss of power at highway speeds was alarming enough without thinking of what may have happened had the bolt broke, or worn thru the timing cover. from a mechanical perspective, i'm extremely dismayed at how this could happen in the first place. i have about 30 years of mechanical experience with car engines - mostly with 60's and 70's era vehicles. my experience would hold suspicion that a bolt backing out of the timing sprocket would be the fault of the mechanic who installed it, either by applying the incorrect torque, oil under the bolt, or not applying loc-tite to threads.

Vehicle started making a knocking/rattling noise that made the engine sound like it was a diesel. the engine in this car is a 3.6 v6 gasoline engine. i brought it into my mechanic as soon as possible and he advised against driving it any more as it sounded like the timing chain was loose. after attempting to get at the noise from under the hood he found out he had to get under the cover on the back of the engine to get to the lower chain. this would require removal of the transmission in the front since the car is a 4motion awd. at that point i had to put $2000 down because of the labor to take everything apart. i've searched online and found many other people have had this same issue, due to an oil pump bolt that fails. there are links to these failures here: http://www.passatworld.com/forums/74-club-b6/327507-3-6-oil-bolt-failure-reference-material.html i called vw customer care and the person on the phone knew nothing about the problem, but said they recommended the timing chain be replaced at 100,000 miles. with my service bill currently upwards of $2,000 with just the labor to get to that chain, i don't think its right that it should cost that much for a 100,000 mile maintenance item.

Engine light came on while driving (2006 passat 3.6 4motion) followed by epc light (indicating e-gas limp mode). vehicle wouldn't drive any faster than ~40 mph. car required over $3300 in repairs (excluding rental), covered by a certified pre-owned warranty. dealership technician informed me that the cause was the oil pump bolt backing out. this issue seems to be widespread and has been well documented with dozens of reported incidents on vwvortex.com as well as passatworld.com.

Started vehicle in normal fasion, noticed large amount of vibration from engine compartment, check engine light came on. upon acceleration, vehicle hesitates drasticaly. took to vw service center and they ran diagnostics. 3 fault codes - po300 multiple cylinder misfire detected, po304 cylinder 4 misfire detected, p3073 throttle transfer pump electrical malfunction in circuit. vw service center swapped ignition coils and plugs - duplicated faults. they wanted to put in new injectors, exhaust lifters, exhaust rockers and fuel pump control module for $1800.00 - and since they were already in there, they wanted to replace timing belt, tensioner, and water pump for another $340.00 i was told that if i don't mind the bad performance/hesitation then it won't hurt the engine any more then it already is. this is a 2006 vw passat 2.0t lux with 80,000 miles. crazy that all these problem occur just after the 75,000 wanantee was up.

The check engine light came on after starting the vehicle. no abnormal behavior was observed before the light came on. on subsequent starts the engine sputtered then drove normally (but the light stayed on). the dealership diagnosed the problem as a faulty intake flap motor with a quoted cost of $475 to replace. problem related to service bulletin num : tsb-01-08-12, nhtsa item number : 10028104. this should be a recall as it is a pollution problem (car cannot pass emissions inspection).

I bought my car with 65000 miles on it. owned it for month and a half, then the piece connected to the catalytic converter, clamp and gasket broke. i had to have my car towed and they repaired this because of the federal law stating it was covered up to 80,000 miles or 8 years. while it was at vw being repaired they checked for any other problems and informed me that my high pressure fuel pump lobe and follower were also in need of repair soon. and began telling me vw of america has admitted that the camshaft lobe (and high pressure fuel pump lobe) was a manufacturer defect, but the bulletin was only issued to the dealership (not the public). this also affects the evap system. i do not understand how a company can know of a manufacturer defect and not have a recall on a car? the warranty specialist suggested that i call vw customer care, but they did not show any concern... what has to be done to get a recall on this specific issue because i am not the only one who has this issue. *tr

Events leading up to failure: none - sudden failure. was on interstate at highway speed. power suddenly dropped and dashboard lights lit up. speed dropped very quickly but was able to avoid incident and go the car to the side of the road. failure: oil pump drive gear bolt broken. car was at dealer for 15 days to replace oil pump, timing chain, sprockets, adjuster tensioners. parts are not available. car was at second dealer for additional 19 days to correct problems created by first dealer while fixing the engine. (received apology by phone from service manager of first dealer.) issues: 1.sudden loss of power at highway speeds could cause an accident. 2.following instructions in manual, i drove car to nearest dealer ? a distance of 10 miles ? with reduced or zero oil circulation. longevity of the engine may be significantly impacted. 3.vw of america declined to inspect the engine in more detail or to replace engine. 4.this is a moderately common failure of this engine. i found 38 almost identical failures at: a.http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3462993 b.http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3193697 summary & requested actions: 1.recall issued for affected engines. 2.my engine replaced / vehicle replaced. *tr

My vehicle had 19k on it and from a cold start sounded like a diesel. i made an appointment at the dealership and the day of that appointment my check engine light came on. the dealership has now had my car for 9 days and have still not diagnosed it. apparently there is a major defect with certain year passat engines. the bolt that holds the oil pump in place backs out and shears off, thus requiring an engine replacement. i am very dissatisfied with vw service and unhappy that my vehicle had such a fatal problem so early. *tr

High idle during high ambient temperatures. idle is raised to 1000-1050rpms during temperatures above 90f. this causes loading of the transmission and additional brake pressure is needed to keep the car at a stop. this can occur suddenly and randomly presenting a safety issue. i have almost ran into several cars at various times when stopped at a light or in traffic. it has happened countless times during the high ambient temperatures. *tr

Issues with hesitation when a rolling stop, and when completely stopped. there is a 2-3 second delay before the car responds to the gas pedal. i have almost been hit 3 times now when pulling out into traffic. that 2-3 delay in acceleration could cause an accident. this is an issue known to vw, they say they are workig on a fix. what are they waiting for, someone to get killed! numerous v6 owners have the same issues! also seond issue is, when i am stopped in heavy stop and go traffic and extreme heat my car idles at 1000rpms. this is corrected by me putting the car in park, stepping on the gas till 3000 rpm and it will go back to normal. it feels like the car in ready to lunge forward unexpectedly. again well known issue to vw, several internet forums discuss this vw has don't nothing. *tr

20 after i purchased my car at carmax in laurel, md in june 2009 i had to take it back because my ac was blowing hot air, after a diagnosis carmax sent my car to a fitzgerald volkswagen dealership in annapolis, md where they diagnosed it for the same problem and in turn had to replace my ac compressor, condensor and clutch. i ran the ac for approximately 2 months (july & aug 2009) that year, since we were already half way through the summer. in may 2010 when i turned my on again it blew hot air, i sent it back to carmax who diagnosed it again and said the ac compressor and pressure switch should be replace, less than a year since the initial ac was replaced the first time. at this point, i called fitzgerald and was told i was past my 12,000 miles per the replacement warranty and that i would have to pay for the work which was qouted at $2300 and $1700. after i complained to the attorney general office, the dealer offered a good will one time offer decreasing the estimated cost to $900. i declined the offer since i don't believe i should have to pay for something that clearly was not done correctly the first time. after purchasing an extended warranty for another issue, i took the car back to the dealer, they diagnosed with the same problem i agreed to have them fix it based on my warranty coverage however, i was denied coverage by the warranty company because volkswagen previously issued a tsb regarding ac issues in 2006 vw passat. this tsb was issued in 2007, my car was purchased in 2009. so as of today 7/20/2011 i am still without a working ac system and i am currently driving around in heat adviosry weather with no ac. i am forced to make alternate arrangements for transportation as a result, since the excessive heat exposure causes me headaches & dizziness.

Tl* - the contact owns a 2006 vw passat. the contact received a recall notice on january 25, 2007 re: service brakes, hydraulic:power assist:vacuum. the dealer honored the recall. however, the contact didn't feel safe driving the vehicle. five days after receiving the recall the brakes failed while a family member was driving 10 mph. the brakes wouldn't engage. the brakes remained in the upright position when the contact attempted to stop the vehicle. volkswagen will honor the warranty. the contact requested to terminate the lease and accept a different vehicle or an allowance for another vehicle. also, the contact's radiator had to be replaced at 200 miles and he felt the vehicle was a lemon. *ak

I've had my 06 passat for little under 2 years now, it was bought used from carmax and it has been horrible from the start. as other consumers have noticed i have a big problem with the key getting stuck in the ignition to the point that i have to start and stop the car at least five or more times before it will dislodge. also, if the key isn't stuck the engine itself won't crank, also taking at least five tries before the engine will start. i have to take the car to a dealership regularly, about once every two to three months, fixing the same problems repeatedly. the check engine light is constantly on and no matter how many times i change the headlights they never last. my most recent problem has been the noises my car is making. it's like a rattling, knocking noise that has only gotten louder since taking it to the shop. the mechanic has said it would take around 3 to 4 thousand dollars to fix, which is only a small amount less than i've put into buying the car, not including the money i've been pouring into constant repairs. this is a horrible car and now that i've done some research and seen just how many other people have had the same problems i have (and more severe, potentially deadly problems in some cases) i make it my business to make sure everyone knows what a dud this car is and how vw does not care about its consumers by not doing anything to fix these ever prevalent problems.

2006 vw passat vr6 3.6l 1./2. on a hot day (90 +/-) and the engine is in idle (normal around 650 rpm) unexpectedly the revs go over 1000 rpm. to keep the car stoped the foot brake pressure must be increased by the driver. this is quite hard to time because the problem does not occur at every stop/idle. it looks like that this occures more often with the a/c on. 3. so far i did nothing but i read that other vw passat 2006 vr6 owners have the same issue. i will make a service and ask my dealer if he is aware of this problem next week.

I have a 2006 vw passat that had a crankcase breather valve foul up for no reason. the vehicle was maintained in accordance with the vw recommended maintenance schedule and this is documented, however, the vw service rep indicated this was a result of not properly maintaining the vehicle. specifically he stated that this is what happens when the owner fails to change the engine oil. (note: vw recommends changing the oil every 10k miles and calls for the use of synthetic oil. both recommendations were followed in this case). this incident occurred when the vehicle had approximately 48,000 miles on the vehicle. the vehicle was driven under normal driving conditions--primarily highway driving in a non snow, non desert environment. as a result of this defect, there was an increase in emissions. also, the engine began to sieze up while i was traveling on an interstate highway thus putting me and my family in danger.

I own a 2006 vw passat 3.6, engine died suddenly after pulling out across a 45mph state route, after engine failed, there was no steering or brakes, had to push car out of traffic with my 2 young sons inside. young vw, easton pa. stated the failure as a oil pump bolt that had backed out and sheared off, causing the catastophic engine failure. after some research i found 58 failure of this type of this same year and engine, at: http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?3462993-attn-3.6l-owners-has-your-engine-failed , - this is clearly an issue vw was aware of several years ago, as evidenced by the replacement or repair of so many, 58+ engines that i can document, and chooses not to recognize the issue, i believe due to financial reasons as this fix is $3,000 in labor alone. i contacted vwoa, (ref. # 810009787) and vw ag, (,ref. no.: vw-2010/12-065992) with this issue and neither had recognized this as a known issue, my vehicle is out of warranty, and vw estimated the repair at $12,800 for a rebuilt engine. aside from being abusively expensive, this failure should not be allowed to occur randomly, in traffic or anywhere creating a very unsafe and life threatening situation, vwoa should be well aware of these potential problems with this year engine, by the many they have replaced or fixed and should make the public aware and effect a fix to prevent a loss of life due to this known engine defect. my vin # wvwfu73c56p140705, 2006 vw passat 3.6l 4motion.

Attempted to start 2.0t engine, heard odd noises coming from engine bay...sounded like a diesel engine though it was a gasoline/petrol engine, shut off and turned on again, check engine light and low oil pressure light activated...shut engine off again and had towed to dealership. bolt that holds oil pump sheared off, oil pan shows metal debris, drive sprocket loose, engine needed total replacement, engine is total loss, vw claims no fault for repairs, vw needs to recall issue, without dealer warranty, repairs would have cost over $7k if this happened on the road it would have resulted in a loss of power and become a potential road hazard/accident

When braking or idol, my 2006 vw passat will have an engine surge that amounts to a sudden increase in rpm. this will make the car difficult to brake and has almost resulted in a accident numerous times. the car will continue to idol at this higher rpm until you begin driving again and the problem will likely occur at the next traffic light. it is very difficult to hold down the brake pedal under this increased engine speed and makes it difficult to bring the car to a stop. my wife struggles to keep the car stopped for 3 minutes at a traffic light because of the high amounts of force required to keep the brake pedal down and the car stopped. the problem seems to be extremely frequent when under hot temperatures or when the ac is being run. this has been ongoing for years but they have been unable to fix it. there are other reports of this happening from other drivers. i have taken it to a dealer 4 times to try to resolve the issue. they acknowledge the issue and can easily repeat it but have been unable to fix it. this car is now dangerous to drive, especially for my wife. please help resolve this issue. thanks

Symptom #1) car will not start or if it does start it will immediately stall and steering column will lock. after moving the steering wheel back and forth repeatedly, reopening the door several times and attempting to start the push ignition 5-10 times it will eventually start and run. symptom #2) major safety issue! car will lose all power without warning at highway speeds. this defect causes the engine to stall immediately, the loss of power steering and the loss of all power controls at speeds at least up to 70 mph. there is no warning from the car itself. there is no stuttering or noise. suddenly the car is just dead and rolling along at extreme speeds. the fix is to shift the car into neutral and attempt to restart by removing and reinserting the key until it starts again. the dashboard will light up steering column defect and prompt a warning light for the steering column as if it were locked from a car alarm prompt. occasionally, i have been unable to restart the car while in motion and have had to pull off to the side of the road. this is done without the aid of power steering and can be very dangerous in traffic and at high speeds as there is no way of knowing when the defect will occur. this defect is occurring daily. i took the car into the dealer for diagnosis. was told it was a defect in the steering column requiring a complete replacement. estimated cost to myself was $1,000-2,000. car is now out of warranty (58,000 miles). i believe this defect is not a result of any habit of myself as the driver but rather a defect in the workmanship of the vehicle and the dealer should be subject to a recall. a search on google about this issue revealed thousands of other drivers with the exact same problem (stall at highway speeds, loss of power steering, difficulty starting and restarting, possible stranding of the driver). i urge a recall to move forward immediately!

2.0t fsi engine with 44k miles has had multiple issues with misfires in cylinder #2, unresolved after 5 visits to dealership for warranty service. dealer has followed vw corporate techline instructions and replaced ignition coils (twice), camshaft, fuel pump, hydraulic lifter in bad cylinder, intake breather hose, intake manifold sensor and other parts with no improvement. car will run ok with no error codes for an average of 3 - 5 days after repair before problem recurs, and condition of engine continues to deteriorate. due to misfires, unburned fuel is now reaching the catalytic converter (detected by sulfur smell) and likely damaging that component as well. entire engine vibrates severely due to improper firing sequence and feels as if it wants to jump out of engine compartment. car has 1 month left on warranty; was advised by dealer that we want to make sure this is fixed while the car is still under warranty, so you don't have to deal with this out of pocket, but they appear either unable or unwilling to fix the root cause. dealer has not offered to provide rental or loaner car during multiple repairs, so i have had to rely on a 15-year old vehicle as primary transportation during multiple repairs lasting 1 to 5 days. will call vw customer care today but do not expect satisfaction, despite the reliability and safety concerns. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 volkswagen passat. while starting the vehicle the engine coil for the spark plug made a rattling noise. he smelled an electrical odor, then the engine stalled. after turning the vehicle off, smoke was released from the coil itself. he used a fire extinguisher to extinguish the flames. the dealer was contacted, and they stated that they wanted to buy the vehicle back from him and give him credit to another vehicle. the vehicle has been at the dealer for about 2 weeks now and they are waiting for permission from the manufacture volkswagen to diagnose the vehicle. the dealer was waiting for him to accept. the offer to buy the vehicle back. the failure and current mileages were 14000.

On a warm day with the a/c running, my 2006 passat 3.6l will have an engine surge increasing rpm to 1,000 while stopped. this has almost amounted in a crash on numerous occasions as it makes the car difficult to keep stopped and causes it to lunge forward. it also results in low fuel economy as the car idols much higher than the normal 600rpm. *tr

Sheared oil pump bolt at 16,000 miles. enigne lost all power. dealer replaced oil pump, timing chain and all related hardware. asked manufacturer (volkswagen) and dealership for new engine due to likley oil starvation after oil pump was inoperative. request denied. very unhappy as this very low mileage car may have a severly damaged engine that vw is unwilling to replace.

My vehicle went into the shop (star motor) april 1, 2008 for an engine light indicator. i was told the fuel pump and cam shaft were bad. they were replaced and i got my car back on april 16, 2008. on may 17, the light came back on and i had to take it back to the shop. they replaced the coils (not sure what these are). on may 18, 2008, the engine light came back on and i had to take it back to the shop. they informed me that the cylinder head needed to be replaced because the compression was not good in cylinder #'s 1 and 3. they decided to flush the turbo/injector system and time the vehicle. i got the car back (not sure of the date). on may 5, 2008, the engine light came back on and i had to take it back in. when put on the computer, i was told that the light indicated and read a cam shaft/misfire 3. months earlier, when the engine light first came on, we called in to star motor and my husband was told that as long as the light wasn't flashing, it was okay. i told this to star motor on may 18, 2008, and gail told me that is correct. that is what they have been told at the home office. obviously, that is not the case. as soon as the engine light started flashing, we called and set up an appointment within 3 weeks. the flashing was very intermittent (flashed maybe once or twice a day). my car is still not fixed and star motor does not appear to know what the true problem is. i was told that the volkswagen home office discussed my car in a classroom setting and they are merely able to guess what the problem is. this is a high end car; 2006 volkswagen passat, and these types of problems should not be occurring; fuel pump, cam shaft (twice), etc. star is trying to work with us. they have even given us loaners to drive, but volkswagen is not willing to help at all. i have been doing research online and have found that these types of problems are far reaching and not simply ours. *tr

Engine idle speed increases to 900-1000 rpm at stops in warm/hot weather. this causes driver to increase pressure on brake to stop car safely. this idle speed may hold for several stops before returning to normal 650-700 rpm. if in stop and go traffic, the high idle will hold longer. it has been suggested that the high idle is in response to the warm weather causing increased resistance in the battery cable from the battery in the trunk of the car (2006 vw passat v6 only) causing a drop in voltage received. the ecm increases engine idle speed to compensate. *jb

I have had recurrent issues with my 2006 passat. i just got the car back from the dealer after being at the dealer for repairs for 25 days, and i was trying to brake at the end of my street and the car did not brake. the pedal was very hard -- i could barely push it in with two feet. i activated the parking brake, and the car stopped -- thank god, i was only going 10 mph, but if i rolled into the intersection i could have been killed. when the car stopped, the check engine light came on, the engine began revving up and down and the headlights were flickering or surging and getting brighter and dimmer and brighter very rapidly. i turned on the interior lights to better view my dash, and the interior lights were surging/flickering as well. in one of my previous visits for dealer repairs, they told me they put in a brand new electrical system. how can this be happening again? this car is beyond repair. i believe i have a lemon and it is dangerous to continue driving this car. i cannot believe that after a 25-day stint in the dealer repair center it's still not working. this is the last of many trips to the dealer for repairs. incidentally, while i bought the car new, i bought it after using it as a loaner when my 2006 jetta tdi was in the shop more than i drove it during my period of ownership. that car had some issues as well, so when i liked the passat i decided to trade it in. i've only driven this passat for less than 5,000 miles and it is terrible. my wife drives a 2006 jetta tdi (a different one) which runs great. how can only one of three cars purchased in less than a six month period function properly. this is seriously impacting my views of vw quality. i have trouble writing vw and the word quality in the same sentence. thank god i didn't die tonight. *nm

Events leading up to the failure ;the problem that i am about to describe has on a consistent basis occurred since i purchased the vehicle. failure and its consequences ; there are three problems. the 1st problem being that when the vehicle is running/on and i am either in park, at a stop light or similar, the engine sputters as if it has lower grade/bad gas or is misfiring or has an air leak of some sort. problem 2, when i am at a complete stop/parked and the vehicle is in drive, when i let off the brake to creep forward (like in traffic) the car shakes/throbs/inches forward as if the brakes are clamping down on the discs and letting go really quick. it is not a problem with the brakes because if i let the car creep in idle up a hill without using the brakes the car still shakes/throbs. the 3rd problem is that the throttle response is delayed anywhere from 1 full second to 3 full seconds. it's simple, when i press on the gas pedal, the car does not move/the engine does not rev anywhere from 1 to 3 full seconds. at highway cruising speeds, it does the same thing. in both instances whether it be at a stop light of cruising at highway speeds, this problem has nearly gotten me killed or seriously hurt. what was done to correct the failure = i took the vehicle in to have the dealership service department see what was causing these problems so they could fix it and they didn't come up with anything. *jb

Recurring engine misfire. there is a engine misfire that seems to occur mostly when it's very hot outside (arizona summers!) and significantly affects the car's ability to accelerate. i took it to the dealer who checked the fuel filter and found no problem. they reset the code and gave the car back to me. the problem is still occurring and i am scheduled to take the car in again. the dealership said they contacted vw america and vw america stated they know of no problem, but for me to bring the car in and attempt to recreate the circumstances under which the misfire occurs. *jb

There were no events that led up to the failure. basically the catalytic converter busted at a flange seam where it bolts to the motor. this further caused my brakes to fail after hot exhaust blew on the brake vacuum tube for the brakes. unfortunately, neither volkswagen or the dealer where i purchased the vehicle are willing to be of any assistance, since it is 8,000 miles over the warranty even though the car is only 2 years old. supposedly the dealership ordered the part 10 days ago, and it still has not arrived. the irony of this is that when i asked the dealership if they would return the defective part to me, they said no because they want to return it to the manufacturer for a warranty exchange! *tr

2006 vw passat. consumer states vehicle suddenly began making rattling and loud popping noise *tgw the consumer stated while leaving work, the vehicle suddenly came to a halt. even though the vehicle was on, the wheels would not move forward. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. upon inspection of the vehicle, the mechanic discovered the right axle had broken. prior to the axle failing, the catalytic converter had to be replaced which was the cause of a loud noise coming from the engine and it also caused the brake booster pipe to melt, which left the consumer with no brakes. *jb
