From around oct. of 2011 i have been experiencing trouble with my throttle body or as volvo calls it 'electronic throttle module'. these problems include but are not limited to, stalling at freeway speeds, rough starting/ not starting at all, reduced engine performance not allowing for safe speed to be maintained, costly repair work with no improvement, and bouts of self accelerating at stops with parking brake and foot brake engaged. i have research a volvo recall/ warranty extension for a defective throttle body, contacted volvo customer service only to get the run-around. various web forums encourage owner experiencing these problems to file complaint with nhtsa to help come to a resolution. *tr

2002 volvo s60 - transmission clunks when engaging gear in drive. problem is most noticeable when shifting from reverse. hesitation to engagement can be up to 2 seconds, then engages very harshly producing the clunking. was told a software flash may correct issue but i am reluctant to spend $80 to discover it did not work. vehicle started demonstrating problem at 80k miles when manually downshifting to first gear to come to a stop. now has 114k miles and driven very carefully with foot hard on brake when shifting from reverse to drive. i no longer perform any sort of manual shifting when in forward motion.

We are a 2 volvo family (having purchased them pre-certified from volvo 2 and 3 years ago respectively). both cars (2002 s60 & 2001 cross country) have had to have their transmissions replaced since purchase - mine once (so far) and my husband's three times - all before 55,000 miles. i went online and found literally hundreds of complaints on defective volvo transmissions: all volvo models - from 2001 through 2006 and mileage ranging from 20,000 to 60,000. why has volvo usa not been taken to task on these defective factory installed transmissions and made to stand behind the manufacture of their cars? *tr

The angel gear failed (also known as the bevel gear) causing a loss of the awd system. symptoms include excessive torque steer and excessive front wheel spin. >$2300 repair. dealer indicated that there was no specific reason for the failure and that there was no preventive maintenance on this part. *jb

While driving my volvo 2002 s60 awd i experience what is referred to as an engine flare. while car shifts automatically from gear to gear the engine will race and the tachometer needle will jump. the car will lurch forward once the gear finally catches. this can happen when the car is cold or hot. it can occur at anytime and any gear. it has also happened while stepping on the brake. i have been experiencing this problem since feb. 2002 and volvo still has yet to fix it. i have made numerous calls to volvo n.a. and the dealer vovloville of massapequa, ny. the dealer tells me that they are still waiting to hear from volvo n.a. and volvo n.a. continues to tell me that they are looking into it but they never call me back with any information. *la

I am appealing for your assistance regarding the car's inclusion in nhtsa campaign 06v-441000. in particular, i have a 2002 volvo s60 2.4t w/37,500 miles. while pulling out of a parking spot 2 months ago, my car's engine began sputtered, and when i got onto a major roadway, the car suddenly went into limp mode, whereby it went 5 mph maximum. *ak the sudden change in speed almost resulted in my car getting rear-ended. i took the car to the dealer, cherry hill volvo in new jersey, and they diagnosed the problem as pertaining to the electronic throttle module (etm). the dealer said that the etm needed to be cleaned, and they proceeded to clean it. a week ago, i found out that nhtsa 06v-441 was issued, which addresses this exact problem. however, i was told by volvo that my car, since it's a turbo, was not included in the nhtsa list, because the etm is a different design. what i'm suggesting is that the etm on my car has the same problem as the old design etm, and that my family could be in danger. from what i've read on message boards, eventually, i will need to replace the etm at a cost of $1100. volvo has warrantied the etm on models other than mine, for 200,000 miles or 10 years. i would like to get my car on that list. have there been others with a turbo like me who have had this problem? is there a way to get my model car on the affected cars list? thank you, marc friedman 732-323-1603 (day)

Steering wheel froze and vehicle could not accelerate. towed to the dealer who found out that the cause was a defect in the axle. *la when the consumer managed to pull over and placed the vehicle into park, the vehicle continued to move. on a separate occasion, the ignition chip had to be changed because the vehicle would not start.

 1) driver's seat shifts rearward on acceleration and shifts forward on braking. dealer has attempted to fix this problem 3 or more times, but it re-ppears shortly after repair. this is a safety issue.*ak 2) vehicle difficult to shift gears (manual transmission). gear changes are very 'jerky', the vehicle cannot be shifted smoothly. volvo recommends letting the clutch slip more, but this only masks the problem. 3) volvo acknowledges an electromagnetic radiation problem with this vehicle, but refuses to fix it. this is a safety issue.
