Since i bought my car from the volvo dealer last winter it has stalled on me at low rpms it also surges forward almost causing me to hit cars in front of me i brought it back to them and the dealers told me its normal because its fuel injected and they wont do anything about it.. this is very dangerous

Driving in the city and when trying to stop on a traffic light the brakes became hard and engine was not running well. when i tried to drive off in the green light the speed control of the gas pedal was very chaotic. i got a message of engine system service required. i took the car to the local volvo dealer and he diagnosed a faulty throtlle etm asking 2000 $ to replace. after researching i found that there was already a recall on that by volvo and when i asked the dealer he said that this was true but my car was more than 10 years old ( although he could have informed me about that in the first place). he informed me that a software service on the etm of my car was done in 2006 ( after the recall?) but this did not fix the problem as apparantly the problem is with the etm design ( faltering potentiometer). this car is very dangerous and it will probably go to the junkyard, but we should be concerned by all volvos remaining on the street with faulty etm's, which the numerous complaints filed at nhtsa show.

Etm (electric throttle module intake manifold) needs to be replaced! (volvo only has a very limited extended warranty issued on 4/2006. the etm was cleaned 3 different times since 8/8/02; and a software upgrade was completed on 10/19/06. my last 2 complaints to my volvo dealership mechanic has resulted in denial on 10/19/06 and refusal to repair under the extended warranty on 8/18/08 due to unretrievable computer codes (volvo admits the problem was still an etm problem). [this has occurred every year for the last 6 years!!!] on several occasions, accidents almost happened because the vehicle either stalls on the freeway at 55-60mph, or vehicle suddenly surges at a red light or stop sign. according to vexedvolvo.com, the real cause is due to a wearing out of the potentiometer films in the throttle position sensors. a simple etm cleaning will not suffice. *tr

Paperwork was completed, i was on my way out, the salesman said, make sure you put some oil in the engine, it has no oil, we didn't have a chance to inspect the car. he went on to say, bring it in sometime next week and we'll inspect it.car was brought in following week, they had no time to inspect it. it went on for three weeks. the engine temperature would rise very quickly, i pulled over and turned off the car. this happened five times. it was brought to a separate car repair shop and they concluded that the cars ecm (electronic computer module) isn't working correctly. none of the gauges are correct, including the gas and engine temperature gauge. they said that the engine could be overheating and it wouldn't show up on the computer, or it might not be overheating and it might show up as overheating. then the dealer did their inspection and said that the car was fine. i asked for diagnostic results and they said that they have no way of printing their diagnostic results. later, the car started saying high engine temp again. i arrived at the dealership and told them the problem. one of the sales men took the car on a test drive. on the freeway, the car was doing just fine. once the car was going about 35mph it started signaling overheating. back at the dealership the salesman left the car running while the car was stating in the dash high engine temp. they proceeded to let the car run. the salesman shut off the vehicle, opened the hood and smoke was rising out of everywhere and all the coolant pipes blew and coolant was leaking everywhere. i was in shock. they basically blew up my car. i walked inside and the salesman commented to me, i did that so he [the dealer] would give you another car.the dealer refused to take the car back. they stated that the only thing that needed to be fixed was a fan control because the fan wasn't working properly. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 volvo s80. while driving 35 mph, all of the dashboard warning lights illuminated and the engine completely failed. the contact was able to pull to the side of the road. the vehicle would not restart and was towed to the dealer. the dealer stated that the engine needed to be replaced and that the cause of failure was a failed timing belt tensioner. the current and failure mileages were 97,000.

I get performance reduced messages on my 2000 volvo s80 message console, and the car will slow down almost to a stop. this has happened more than 100 times to me - even at highway speeds. i have to put the hazard lights on, and make my way off of the road on to the shoulder. if i turn the car off, and restart the car, (often several times), the car seems to reset and i can often drive on. westside volvo of cleveland, ohio has quoted me between $1,200 and $2,000 to fix this problem, and has told me it is the etm. my car has 106,000 miles on it. the dealer has told me that the unit was designed only to last until 100,000 miles, and that only a volvo dealer can replace it - because of computer software that must be encoded on the part. i purchased this car used with 59,000 miles on it, thinking i would get a car that might last me (volvo - for life... happens to be the company's marketing slogan). however, i cannot currently afford the repair, and i cannot afford to get another car. i am forced to drive this car and it is unsafe. i have had more than 5 incidents where there was almost a crash - mostly due to this performance reduced happening at highway speeds on multiple lane highways in heavy traffic. please do something about this - please help me. thank you. *jb

2000 volvo s80 t6 sedan - car began to jerk as though missing; got progressively worse, even after complete maintenance update. has essentially gone to no power and i'v had to coast to the side of the highway - turn off- wait - restart and then run awhile longer. local mechanic says its a throttle module or my main computer and must be fixed at dealer (220 miles away) because no one else can program the new module when replacing. *jb

This car (2000 volvo s80 turbo) has been in my family since it was brand new. first it was my mother's when it was purchased in 2000. then in the summer of 2005, it became mine. both while my mother owned it, and now while i've owned it there have been a number of problems. the car has never been in an accident of any sort. stalling is the biggest problem. unpredictably the car when decreasing speed will just stall and the car stops. every time this has happened if the car is put into park, turned off, and then turned back on it works fine, however it is very dangerous for something like this to happen. also, twice since i have had it there has been no oil in my car. no lights come up to warn me and thankfully both times i got it checked out before my car over heated. another instance, there was a leak in the automatic steering. today i went to start my car and a warning message came up saying low battery voltage and my car did not feel right when i drove it. i never left any lights on or anything of that matter that would cause a drain in the battery and the battery was just replaced not too long ago. i think that was my breaking point with this car. for a car that is only 5 years old, and is supposed to be that great of a car. its awful. *jb

My 200 volvo s80 stalled intermittently in 2003, so i had the throttle body 2000 cleaned at 48,989 miles when my car was still under warranty. a service on april 19, 2005 showed no codes though my car has been stalling periodically again since march of this year in a variety of dangerous settings: pulling up to a crowded curb at my kids' school, attempting to stop at a stop sign in a crowded intersection, driving 40 mph on a busy street, driving around a traffic circle in a mountain town, etc. my car has stalled 10-15 times since march. each time, it was extremely difficult to steer, to brake and attempt to put my car in neutral and restart it when it stalled. almost all of the times it stalled, it created a dangerous situation for me, for other drivers around me and for pedestrians. a visit to the service center today reveals that i need to spend $1,150 to replace the throttle body. i understand that, in time, the new throttle body will have the same problems as the old one. this is an extremely dangerous situation; i try to avoid driving near volvos if possible. *jb

The engine shut down suddenly with loss of power steering and power brakes once while on a ramp entering the expressway and a second time while on the expressway. each almost caused an accident. i was able to re-start the engine. this happened shortly after buying the car and the etm and maf were replaced then. several times over the years since there has been a variation of engine speed while driving at high speed. the dealer was never able to identify the problem. i just had this fixed (at a cost of $1,326.68) since it is no longer under warranty.

I was traveling on interstate 20 from atlanta, ga headed to charleston, sc. between augusta, ga and columbia, sc, the car lost power as if someone were applying the brakes while i had my foot on the gas pedal. suddenly, i had a warning light come on that said performance reduced. i wound up having to locate the local volvo dealer in columbia where i left my car for repair and had to proceed to charleston in a rented vehicle. this happened late in the day on friday and i had to be in charleston for a meeting on saturday morning. the throttle body control was deemed to be the problem and the dealer replaced it at a cost of close to $1,000. when i asked what would have happened if i had continued to drive i was told that the car eventually would have lost total power and died. unfortunately, i do not have the part that was replaced. when i read about your investigation, i was outraged that this is obviously a dangerous and fairly common problem. *nm

Dt: a 2000 volvo s80. the engine stalls/died at 5-7 mph. this happened at least three times. each time it happened at low speeds. has occurred just after starting and when pulling to a stop. when taking vehicle to the dealership the first two times they did not tell him what they did to the vehicle. the third time they fixed the air mass meter which controlled the air and fuel mixture. this fixed the problem temporarily. the first time it occurred was on 10/112004, the second time it was on 01/01-205, and most recently it occurred on 7-28-2005. *ak the consumer stated the problem was finally resolved, a new throttle body part was installed. *jb

Car stalling. i thought that it was just my bad luck- that i had bought a lemon. i purchased my 2000 volvo s80 t6 sedan brand new in december 1999. i have had many, many problems with this car, all of which were covered by warranty. the reason i am writing to you just now is because of what i just read on the internet. my car stalled in traffic last month. i was coming to a stop at a light. the car re-started. the volvo dealer could not find a problem. there has been no stalling since. *jb

While driving the vehicle goes into limp mode and a error message saying safely pull over and restart vehicle goes on. the vehicle wouldn't exceed 5 mph with traffic behind me. it is a potentially dangerous situation, which has happened several times. but i've finally brought the car to the dealership and apparently the electronic throttle body module, and the anti-lock brake module both have to be replaced. then after checking several forums this seems to be an epidemic for the volvo s80.

I own a 2000 volvo s80 2.9 - vin: yv1ts94d2y1144559. i had purchased the vehicle new from bridgewater volvo in nj on aug 15, 2000. i have 49,100 miles on the car and i have maintained the vehicle impeccably in the last 5 years of ownership. two weeks ago the car started stalling and the message display read reduced performance. my wife uses the car to commute to work and the stalling of the car on the highways put her into a potentially dangerous situation. she was able to safely pullover and the car would re-start again every time it stalled. she finally got home and after the second day of the problems she left it in the garage and used the second car for commuting. she then took it to the volvo dealer in edison nj. volvo of edison diagnosed the problem and here is the direct qoute from their bill - performance reduced light fault trace ecm 91a7 and abs 00b1-found internal fault in etm and brake pedal position sensor replace and download etm and brake pedal position sensor since the car is no longer under warranty i had to pay the following amounts: parts - throttle body, gasket & sensor = $655.42 labor - $472.50 taxes = $67.68 total = $1,195.60 i called volvo customer service to complain about the pre-mature failures and their response was there is nothing they can do about it. i also stated that i am dissatisfied with their product quality and i may not consider buying another volvo product. the customer service rep told me that in that case volvo may not even consider reviewing my case as i may not consider buying another volvo. in addition to the above problem last year i had a cooling fan failure which was covered under warranty just before it expired. now i have never ever received a recall notice from volvo on any problems. i understand that there was a recall on the front suspension ball joints and i do not know if volvo during the routine service visits ever applied the recall fix. *nm

Car overheats while driving below 15 miles per hour or stopped in warm weather. indicator lights tell you to turn of the engine. temperature guage pegged in the red zone. radiator fluid boils out when you turn of the car. the dealer says it is the same problem that the 1999 s80's (nhtsa campaign id number : 02v096000 ) have. unfortunatly my car was produced 2 months after the end of the recall.

In early jul 05, i experienced electronic throttle system (ets) problems with my 2000 volvo s80. particularly concerning to me from a safety standpoint was that several times, including when i was in highway driving situations, the car on its own suddenly accelerated and decelerated, hesitated on acceleration or would not accelerate, and displayed engine stall symptoms. the computer indicated degraded engine performance (limp mode). i lined up a service appointment with lovering volvo of meredith. after lovering's first attempt at repairs, the car was still not operating normally and i took it back to the dealer a second time. i paid a total of $2,074.42 for repairs, $1,741.44 the first time and $332.98 during the second visit. in accordance with a june 2006 volvo letter, i took my s80 back to lovering for inspection and ets software upgrade. i submitted to volvo a claim for reimbursement for ets repairs. the advertising checking bureau (acb), which administers the ets warranty rebate program on behalf of volvo, sent me a check for $747.93 for the ets repairs. acb said it was authorized to reimburse me only the $587.93 cost of electronic throttle body, electronic throttle module reload, and gasket, and associated $160.00 labor cost. acb advised me to contact the volvo customer care center. a volvo customer care representative confirmed that acb had done as instructed and suggested that i take up the matter of the remaining repair costs with lovering. the lovering invoices, dated july 26, 2005 and august 8, 2005, indicate that a $295.65 portion of the initial $1,741.44 repair bill had to do with totally unrelated steering/suspension and engine mount repairs. still questionable in my mind are the oxygen sensor repairs which added up to $897.86 and the subsequent mass air flow sensor repairs which came to $332.98. i suspect the problems are all ets-related and i am currently pursuing the matter with the dealership. *nm

There was nothing leading up to the engine stalling out, it just happened all of a sudden. i have had a sudden loss of speed/ power to vehicle in the past and also just recently...along with no ability to steer while driving in highway traffic and then the vehicle will just stall out completely in the middle of traffic, unable to restart until the car feels like cranking up again. i took the vehicle to a volvo repair shop and the mechanic could find a problem but a week later the same thing happened again. the stalling happens sporadically, so you just never know when it will happen next. *nm

My wife was driving the car and making a left turn across traffic (with plenty of room to make the turn). as she decelerated to make the turn, the car died. as this happened, of course all power steering and brakes were lost. she narrowly avoided an accident, as she was stuck out in the intersection. i have spent some time researching this problem and its causes and i have found ample supporting information that many owners of this vehicle are having this problem of the car dying on deceleration. the problem is apparently due to an electronic throttle module (etm). this is a unique system installed by volvo that does away with the traditional throttle cable. apparently these devices are failing regularly, and must be replaced to the tune of about $1000 cost to the owner of the vehicle. i think that if a normal throttle-cable vehicle had a great tendency to break throttle cables, even on cars with low miles, this would lead to some sort of recall because this leads to an unsafe situation. this was such a near miss for my wife that she is afraid to drive the car until it is repaired. check www.brickboard.com site. this is a site for volvo owners. a search for s80 and etm will generate many hits from owners who have had the same unsafe condition leading to a need to replace this faulty device. *nm

My 2000 volvo s80 t6 stalls (typically in junctions) after 120k maintenance service / recall 155 etm software upgrade. the service was performed on 5/12/06 at authorized volvo dealer (128volvo.com). since the service, the car stalled 5 times, and has been to the dealership three more times, without a fixing the problem. the dealer rejects my complains and wants this issue to happen more frequently before taking action. sudden stalls almost lead me to a traffic accident already at least once; the dealership isn't concerned about traffic safety. *nm

 (1) no warning prior to failure (2) the engine suddenly stalled, leading to instant loss of power / speed. the very first time it happened to me was 2.5 yrs ago(july, 2003) the day after i bought the car at 62 k miles. the engine stalled when i was driving @40-50 miles/hr for 6 miles. the car was towed to the garage and a throttle was replaced. then, after 2.5 year, when the mileage reached 91k (less than 30k after throttle replacement), the same stalling appeared again. the first time it happened was around 12/10, when i parked the car. the second time was on 12/18, when i pulled over to a traffic light the third time was on 12/19, again when i approached parking lot, to take it to the volvo service. (3) in the first day at volvo dealer service (@ 96th st., indianapolis) could not diagnose the problem: no error code was found. in the second day, upon my request, the service personnel drove the car for two or three miles and the car stalled again. i was told that they found the error code, and determined it related to air intake / throttle. i was also told that the repair would be under volvo extended warranty of throttle cleaning, which i was not notified but found through nhtsa website, and made inquiry to the service personnel. today is the third day of car in the garage, and i have not heard any word from volvo dealer. i am afraid any fix i receive today or in the near future is just temporary, as the same problem happened at 62k. even after new throttle was installed, this problem appeared at 91k. i was also told by the volvo dealer that the previous owner had the same problem. *nm

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING - ENGINE - GASOLINE - TURBO-CHARGER
12/01/200462780103/05/2000
Shortly after my vehicle's 60k mile service, i noticed slight hesitation while crusing around 60 miles per hour on highway. once i experience the hesitation, the enginer service light would come on then the engine system service urgent message would come on as well. when the hesitation starts, i would feel as if i no longer have the full control of the gas throttle as it does not respond at all. eg. when i take off my foot off the gas pedal, i would feel a sudden surge in vehicle acceleration! while waiting to get the car serviced by my dealed to take a look at the problem, the warning lights would come and go. finally, during my trip to get my car serviced, the gas throttle stop responding thus the car cruised to a full stop. i was able to restart the car after about 15 minutes and continue with my journey. later i was told that i need to replace the whole throttle body in order to fix this problem. my concern is why this problem was not detected during my major tuneup service about 3 weeks prior insetad,i had to make a separate trip to the dealership and potentially get into a very dangerous situation while traveling at high speed then to lose the control over the vehicle's gas throttle where it may suddenly accelerate or decelerate. *ak

At 70mph my car said reduced performance, and within 30 sec. my cruise control failed, the car reduced to 5mph, and there was no acceleration. i was in 5 lanes of rush hour traffic doing 70-80mph. an eighteen wheeler skidded approx. 50 feet in order to avoid hitting me. he then had to block off two lanes of traffic to assist me to the shoulder. my car would only coast. it was a near death experience for me. i'm thankful my children were not with me. after being turned off over night, my husband attempted to drive it to the volvo dealership. he experienced the same. we were told that it was due to a computer chip malfunction. a chip which controls the throttle, fuel-injection, and cruise control. wow! the service rep. we haven't seen anymore problems after replacing the chip. we asked why has this not been recalled. the rep. said there have to be so many accidents and fatalities reported, before they will recall it. this has left me very disturbed, and reluctant to ever drive a volvo again. i feel sure if it hadn't been for my quick use of the hazard lights, it could have been fatal. the truck driver also concurred. i do not want this to happen to anyone else. they may not be so lucky.

The vehicle sporadically surge/hesitate and stalls at low revs. this started maybe about half a year ago and has gotten worse with the problems even at high revs. the problem culminated on may 17th 2009 or there about when i nearly got into an accident. i was traveling on the middle at about 60 mph and there was a slower vehicle in front of me. i accelerated to try to pass the vehicle on the fast lane. the vehicle did pick up and all of a sudden went on a limp mode even i stepped on the accelerator. my vehicle was almost just side by side to the slower vehicle when this happened. the next thing i heard was a loud continuous horning and screeching of brakes of a car behind me on the fast lane.. the vehicle is well maintained and perform service well above as what manufacturer recommended. based on various info. sources, the problem is almost identical to car that has an electronic throttle module problem. *tr

Over the course of ownership of a 2000 volvo s80 (i.e., four years), i have the transmission overhauled at 67,000 miles;had the throttle replaced when my car choked ( luckily on a side street); had a bar on the sunroof drop off; engine mounts broken; wheel stops broken; and, most recently replaced an abs panel. not withstanding in any of these incidents is the cooling fan and ball joint replaced due to recall. truly this car has been more expensive than any other known to be driven. every trip to the dealership is easily $1000 plus. at the time of purchase, the research was scant in terms of problems. i have truly been dismayed by volvo's commitment to its product and is design flaws and/or defects. after, the transmission was corrected at the dealership, i went to trade the car in---to purchase another car. the dealership where i purchased the car basically would not give money on its trade. after several thousand dollars later in repairs, i am still fuming over a car that was purchased solely for the historical volvo standard and its commitment to safety. *jb

Air intake tube protrudes below the bottom of the engine and comes in contact with high spot in the road. leads to abrasion and failure of drive belt with subsequent destruction of the timing belt and catastrophic failure of the engine. loss of engine power under numerous driving conditions could easily lead to a fatal accident. volvo refuses to acknowledge the problem, rectify it or reimburse customers. volvo has redesigned on later models without admission of guilt.*ak
