My 2000 s80 t6 stalls in traffic and loses power while driving. whenever i stop at a traffic light, i'll have to step harder on the accelerator in order to avoid the vehicle behind me from hitting my car.sometimes it jerks so bad i feel that engine may fall off.there's no engine light on or anything. i have called volvo and was told the problem is etm but has been replaced on my car according to their records. i have taken the car to the dealership and had different components tested out and fixed but that did not solve the problem.

Tl-the contact owns a 2000 volvo s80. while driving approximately 35 mph the vehicle surged forward slightly before driving as normal. the failure recurred intermittently while driving at any speed so the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where she was informed this was a common transmission failure. the vehicle was then taken to an independent repair shop where the transmission was replaced. the failure continues to recur intermittently. the failure mileage was 122,500 and the current mileage was 130,000. sm.

In oct 04, we purchased a volvo 2000 s80, vin yv1ts90d7y1066690. we were satisfied with the performance of the car for the most part. shortly after we purchased the volvo, the check engine light came on, and after having the codes check, the oxygen sensor needed to be replaced. since the car was running smooth and w/agreement of my mechanic, i did not have the os replaced. in march 2006, another msg came on the msg ctr, urgent transmission service req'd. after having the problem check out, i was told the transmission needed to be completely overhauled. my transmission overhaul cost $1300. the problems with the transmission, according to transmission technician, was with the overdrive clutch hub and two shift solenoids were defective. after the repair the car was running great. another problem came up on the msg ctr, stating urgent engine service req'd. we had driven less than the 100 mi when another msg appeared. after checking w/my mechanic and another owner of a 2000 s80 volvo, who had experienced the same problem, it was determined we had a problem with the etm (elect throttle mod), which was a known issue with volvo. l. after more investigating, i found out that the warranty on the etm had been extended to 200,000 miles, my car had a little over 125,000 miles. i scheduled my car for repair at my local volvo dealership, tim marburger volvo of bristol, tn, for repair under a warranty problem. my car was repaired/upgraded to fix the issue with the etm. my volvo is currently running much better than it's run since we purchased the vehicle. once the msg came on regarding the engine needing service, the performance was marginal at best, fortunately we were not in a situation that could have caused an accident, that his happen in traffic, who knows what might have happened. it seems that volvo knows they have problems with the etm, why haven't they done something to notify their volvo owner of this problem??? this is provided for your info/action. *nm

Over the course of ownership of a 2000 volvo s80 (i.e., four years), i have the transmission overhauled at 67,000 miles;had the throttle replaced when my car choked ( luckily on a side street); had a bar on the sunroof drop off; engine mounts broken; wheel stops broken; and, most recently replaced an abs panel. not withstanding in any of these incidents is the cooling fan and ball joint replaced due to recall. truly this car has been more expensive than any other known to be driven. every trip to the dealership is easily $1000 plus. at the time of purchase, the research was scant in terms of problems. i have truly been dismayed by volvo's commitment to its product and is design flaws and/or defects. after, the transmission was corrected at the dealership, i went to trade the car in---to purchase another car. the dealership where i purchased the car basically would not give money on its trade. after several thousand dollars later in repairs, i am still fuming over a car that was purchased solely for the historical volvo standard and its commitment to safety. *jb

Similar to a nhtsa complaint number 873996, this vehicle (2000 volvo s-80 t6) shut down during highway driving at 70 mph. console message status indicated engine system service urgent after coasting to safe location, engine would not re-start until cooled. after starting, the message status remained the same, but cruise control was inoperable, automatic transmission would not operate above 2000 rpm in both automatic -or- manual mode. early symptoms of this problem may have been falsely manifested as poor automatic transmission shifting performance in 3rd, 4th, and overdrive gears. the symptoms have persisted until failure since the vehicle was purchased. as of 10/4/03, dealer had replaced the entire electronic throttle body (carburetor) at consumer cost of $926.70 and recommended cruise control module replacement estimated at $860.00 original vehicle history including complete transmission replacement at 9000 miles is available from owner or dealer. additionally, the electronic throttle module (carburetor) is available for failure analysis. *la complaint is an addto email consumer letter regarding an internet voq request that was filed in reference to 2000 volvo s80. volvo experiencing engine surges. 10041220 is the complaint in which this email consumer letter is being added to.*mr

2000 volvo, s80 very bad car, complaints never fixed by dealer hardly runs--this car is a lemon-pages required to list all problems auto transmission broke at 51,1000 miles, one month after dealer said all was okay. this model a real lemon--the worst running car i ever owned.other problems; front bumper fell off when car had 1200 miles. defective battery cable linkage caused intermintent stalling, motor does not run smooth and surges at low speeds. poor winshield wipers that dealer can seem to fix. interior controls break often, light bulbs are constantly going out--every light replaced at least once. automatic transmission replaced under warrenty at 51,200--but must have been replaced with a rebuilt or used transmission--as it is very much louder and 'wines' when shifting--very loud. car not worth the $36,250 that i would have paid new--luckly i am just leasing and it is finished this september. also strange things in the electrical system, doors that won't open or lock by themselves. abs brake light constantly going on. car is a lemon with many design flaws, and dealer is powerless or refuses to fix, despite the fact that i took it in for service regularily to the same dealer. this is the second volvo from same dealer, other was a 240dl (1988), a wonderful car. i will never buy or lease another volvo--please warn others. *ak

When full throttle is applied to the vehicle in a stationary position, the call pulls badly to the right. consumer has been told that this is torque steer problem, which could be potentially dangerous, the front wheel drive train is unable to evenly distribute the power produced by the turbo system. *yd

 1) engine idles rough, problem became so bad that car stalls at low speeds, lost power steering & engine dies at low speeds (unsafe!). local mech referred to etm warranty program to re-program faulty etm module. took car to dlr, re-programmed etm car died again! turns out bad battery as well: several hundred $$$ to replace battery. car does not accelerate smoothly, large shudders present when merging onto hwy, during transmission/gear shift. not good! 2) airbag srs-urgent service warning indicator light is on. good local mech. states this is a $1000 repair. 3) check brake light warning indicator light turns on when depressing on brake pedal: good local mech. states that this is normal requires exact matching electrical resistance of all brake lamps to ensure that check brake light warning does not occur (in actuality the brake lights work fine, the built-in-test is faulty). 4) check engine light comes on 2-3 times in last 3 months. major service was required. one fault was isolated to fuel tank gas cap: if not secured properly ecm-4308 (leak diagnostic) large leak occurs...remedied by twisting fuel cap 3 full rotations, after re-fueling gas tank. good local mech. diagnosed the loose gas cap problem, warned me about it, and didn't charge me (nice!). 5) body paint is very susceptible to chipping & scratches. paint or exterior panels are very soft and easily damaged. another shame, this car looks great but does not hold up very well under typical parking lot conditions (i.e. someone parked next to you opens their car door into the side of your car resulting in a large scratch). solution: purchase a fancy car cover and protect the body paint, if you can! 6) parking brake seems loose, upon parking car and engaging parking brake the vehicle rolls almost 30 cm bwds or fwd depending on level or inclined surface. *tr

Erratic throttle post 10 minutes of drive, much acceleration, not enough acceleration, hesitation, backfires lean. gets stuck 2nd gear. cel on. transmission service urgent warning message displayed. cruise control is lost and cannot be turned back on. obdii pcodes stored 10-29-2006 10:21:18.464 read stored dtc: p0756 dtc: p1171 dtc: p1181 dtc: p1618 10-29-2006 10:21:18.474 read stored dtc: p1184 10-29-2006 10:21:18.474 read stored dtc: p1174 the first code always displayed when the fault occurs. subsequent continued driving results in the second code pending or permanent. the remaining codes will be added in pairs. first dealer reports i have 18 codes but factory vadis indicates can only store 15 codes maximum. requested additional $300 to adjust fuel trims, check exhaust and intake leaks, check o2 sensors, work declined. second dealer reports needs complete transmission. no attempt to solve complaints by dealer, contacted volvo customer service and they declined to discuss problems, they declined any further involvement. car had salvage title 2+ years ago from minor accident which prematurely deployed air bags, repaired and returned to service. i am retired ase master mechanic, service manager, and sae member, this is not a transmission issue but caused by the erratic actions of the throttle body system and module. transmission passes all conventional tests. results stuck in gear can be corrected by cycling the ignition switch off and back on. this can be done by pulling to the side of the road and stopping to cycle the key or traffic permitting placing in neutral and restarting and then back to drive. no observed failures above 65 mph. tsb send wrong signals to network are translated as instructions resulting in poor fuel consumption, high emissions, abnormal wear and tear on transmission, ignition switch, starter, and related components for normal operation, plus a dangerous driving condition. *nm

3 independent issues: throttle module - vehicle suddenly and unpredictably surges forward, particularly during idle or low speeds while in forward or reverse either stopped or moving, causing potential safety problems. transmission module - vehicle suddenly and unpredictably looses power, presenting the driving performance of a slipping transmission, causing unpredictable responsiveness to changing traffic conditions, and potential safety problems. front suspension - knocking noise from front suspension component(s), causing lack of driving confidence and concerns of driving safety and performance. all 3 of these problems are widely reported as chronic design, performance, safety and reliability issues for the same model years by other volvo owners. in newer model years, volvo has made manufacturing changes to address these recognized issues, but has not as yet successfully addressed and responded to these safety issues. further, these issues have been reported to nhtsa by other volvo owners. *nm

Since buying my 2000 volvo s80 t6 in 2001 i've been puzzled by an occasional noise coming from the front of the car and would mention it to the pat patterson volvo, memphis, tn service writer. he would pass my comments on to the mechanics but nothing was ever found. on saturday 8/5/2006 i made a trip in the mountains of central arkansas during which i drove on a rough, gravel road. after a little over a mile i heard a noise something like that caused when there is a flat tire. i was fortunate in finding a mechanic to look at the car. he was able to get me on my way and i thus was not stranded on a weekend a hundred miles from home. mystery of the long time noise solved! the problem was a bolt loose on the right front hub. the mechanic stated the bolt had been loose for a long time and theorized that driving on the rough road had caused it to finally come all the way out. the reason the bolt came loose, he said, was that lock-tight wasn't applied by the factory. the local mechanic removed the bolt on saturday but didn't have a replacement so i took it back to pat patterson volvo (ppv) yesterday. the lack of lock-tight having been used by the factory was confirmed. *jb

Own a 2000 volvo s80, i began to experience an uneven ideling when driving either low or high speed, whether on cruise control or not. the car idle goes out of control, it feels as if the car goes on limp mode, i'm then compelled to accelerate to compensate and regain speed. i had the car checked, had the vehicle speed sensor replaced, complete tune up, but the problem remains. i did my research on the web only to find out that this problem is part of a recall from volvo. i took the car to a volvo dealer (volvo of los angeles) with the recall documentation, they kept the car for a week, then i was told that volvo does not repair the problem unless the computer code show up in their system, even though the symptoms of the car are clearly depicted in the nhtsa action #ea05021. driving this car is unnerving, as i do not know whether it would respond in time, when i have to gain speed on the freeway. the car failure is occurring more often, getting worse as i drive, sometimes i do not know if the car will respond as step on the gas to proceed after a red traffic light turns green. i'm disappointed with volvo for not addressing the issue. *tr
