Week of 10/10/05 as traveling uphill, my car sputtered and loss power. after nearly being rear ended on the busy road, i was able to limb my car into a parking lot and turn off the engine. after a few minutes, i was able to restart my car and continue driving. today, 10/18/05, as i was entering i-85, my car once again sputtered and stalled. the entrance ramp was downhill, so i was able to coast into the emergency lane as tractor trailers and cars whizzed by me. i restarted the car after a few minutes of being turned off. i went to a mechanic friend and he told me that it was probably the etm and if it was not, it would be the next time the car breaks down. he could not repair it. he estimated the dealership would charge me $1200.00. he reported that he sees this at least once a month in volvos. i took the car to the dealer. an hour and a half later, i was informed my etm needed to be replaced and the cost would be $1150.00. i relunctantly agreed to the repair. i have researched the etm problem over the internet and have learned that volvo knew of this problem years before they sold the car to me. at a personal level, i had to pay for a defective part that volvo has known it has a 94%-100% failure rate! at a much higher level, volvo is risking people lives by not informing or voluntarily recalling this defective part. cars stall unexpectively. i was fortunate that i was not on the interstate yet. otherwise, the outcome could have been deadly.

I own a 2001 volvo s 80. it died on the highway in the middle of busy rush hour traffic. had it towed to volvo and repaired. need a new throttle body and mass air flow sensor. very expensive repair and was told off the record that this part failure has been much more common than it should be. i am notifying you so that you will look into manner. seems this should be a recall item. thank you. *nm

2001 volvo s80 sedan traveling at 70 mph on us 75 (limited access expressway) in dallas tx. sudden loss of fuel supply caused the car to decelerate to 15 mph and would not respond to the accelerator. managed to get car to the side of the road narrowly avoiding two collisions. car was towed to the dealer where the throttle body was replaced at a cost of $1048.00. i reported the repair to volvo cars of america and also gave the dealer service manager copies of complaints logged on the internet by owners experiencing the same problem. no response from either vcoa or the dealer.

1.my wife has a 2001 volvo s80 t6. the car just died on her at 65 mph on a major freeway. she was lucky to get it on the shoulder and was stranded. 2. the failure as stated by volvo is the throtte module. 3. doing research i have found that this is major failure on volvo and volvo continues to deny the problem. there is alott of supporting articles and several class action law suits in the works. the dealer states it will cost $907.00 to fix. still not fixed!!!!

Surging idle speed. car lurches forward at times when accelerating from a stop. car almost stalls when idling in bumper to bumper traffic, requiring you to press on the gas to keep it from stalling, but this makes the car lurch forward even more. several times i have almost hit the car in front of me. this problem is due to a faulty etm (electronic throttle module) that is described in the nhtsa defect investigation shown below. the etm in my car was replaced two years ago at 46k miles but the same symptoms are recurring. nhtsa action number : pe05041 nhtsa recall campaign number : n/a make : volvo model: s80 manufacturer : volvo cars of n.a. llc. year : 2001 component : vehicle speed control date investigation opened : july 26, 2005 date investigation closed : open summary: the office of defects investigation (odi) has received one hundred and thirty-one (131) consumer complaints alleging a variety of concerns resulting from failure of the electronic throttle control module (etm) in the subject vehicles, including a sudden loss of speed and steering assist when driving in highway traffic and sudden and complete stall without warning. in some instances, it has been reported that the vehicles would restart, and in some cases the vehicles were towed. some consumers allege that after having the etm replaced the new component failed in a similar manner. a preliminary evaluation has been opened to determine the scope, frequency, and potential safety-related consequences of the alleged defect. *jb

The vehicle gave no indication prior to the maf and throttle unit giving out the first time. we were stranded on interstate 15 in the middle of the desert. the vehicle all of a sudden just stopped running. luckily the item was repaired, still under warranty. this same part failed for the second time 9/4/2004. replaced again after having it towed from residence to volvo of las vegas. smell of gas and engine surge occurred prior to stalling. brought into volvo of las vegas 9/2/2005 to have checked for engine surge and sporadic rpm surges. i informed them that it is probably the maf and or the throttle unit, volvo of las vegas says that nothing is wrong. however, i had to pay $105.00 for labor with no resolve. i am very concerned for the safety of my family if this same instance occurs again. *jb

2001 s80 volvo etm failure. it started as vehicle hesitation, then proceeded to surging forward with no throttle input, then progressed to no accelerator response when applying the brake pedal, then to stalling when coasting leaving the driver with no power steering or brakes at speeds up to 55 mph, then to rough idle and check engine light. all symptoms were present upon taking to the dealer based on some web research to identify to problem. the dealer returned with an analysis for timing belt replacement, engine tune up, engine coolant flush, crankcase ventilation system cleaning, brake system flushing, and mass air flow replacement amounting to an initial cost of $1980.00 us. i requested a conference with the technician, and a review of the diagnostics report. the end result was a maf replacement paid for by me (customer) and amazingly the tech notes recommended cleaning of the crankcase ventilation system and the etm cleaning which was covered by the dealer. total cost was $328.21 to consumer and balance covered by dealer. the repairs were made on 3/07/06, replaced maf unavailable. i feel that i have been taken advantage of and essentially paid $328 unnecessarily due to further web research identifying cleaning of the etm and crankcase ventilation system would in fact cause trouble codes leading the replacement of the maf. *jb

I own a 2001 volvo s-80. there is a dangerous problem with this car . it involves the electronic throttle module (etm). the car at times will not move even though the engine is running and the car is in gear. it just will not move. particularly when trying to move into traffic. i am aware through my reading of the fact that there are hundreds of thousands of vehicles with the same problem. volvo knows about this but to date has done nothing to correct it. i also know that nhtsa is investigations the problem and i wanted to list my name with you for a complaint on this. *jb

We own a 2001 volvo s80 with an electronic throttle module problem that we attempted to have the volvo dealer fix in august 04. the car had 98,000 miles on it at that time. the dealer claimed to not be aware of any problems with the etm, but that they could attempt to clean the system, which they proceeded to do at $566. the problem wasn't fixed, but the dealer said they could now fix the problem for an additional $1000. this really irked me, i never went back, now it is a year later and the car still is not fixed, but it won't pass inspection un til it is corrected. i've visited several non-dealer mechanics who have all said they can't fix the problem, so i'm stuck having to go back to a dealer who has tried to swindle me. i recently became aware of the thousands of complaints about this problem with the volvos, but i refuse to have the untrustworthy and unknowing volvo dealership touch the car. i now have found a mechanic who formally worked for volvo attempt to repair the car. it will probably cost me doulbe what the volvo mechanic has said it would, but there is no faith in the dealership. i un derstand there is a class action lawsuit against volvo because of this problem, i will save all my receipts for the possibility of filing a claim either with you or with the lawsuit plaintiffs.

I was driving my 2001 volvo s80 2.9l and was about to make a left turn at a four way intersection. when the traffic flow was clear i pressed the accelerator but the car died. thankfully, i was not struck by the oncomming vehicle. i took the car to volvo of richardson in richardson texas and was told it needed a mass air sensor and electronic throttle body. the factory warranty will not cover the part since it has lapsed.

Leak in gas tank of 2001 volvo s-80. told by ramsey volvo that it was caused by a road hazard-that we must have hit something that caused the puncture to the side of the gas tank even though we were traveling down a major highway from boston to new york and we were unaware of any incident
