My check engine light went on. i took my car to my mechanic who informed me the code was for throttle body position sensor and that there was a recall. i called the volvo dealer and asked them about it. they said, yes there was a recall for software and that my vehicle had gotten the upgrade. i asked if there was anything else they could do about it, the employee in volvo service said no. i received the same answer when i asked them in person. on march 1, 2011, nearly a year later, i asked another mechanic, who informed me that if the software upgrade didn't work, the dealer was supposed to replace the entire throttle body. i called the another volvo dealer who informed me that yes, this was the case. my car was one day out of coverage for the recall now. and sometime within the year my computer was reset and the problem code for the throttle body is gone. i am upset because when it was a problem for me, the first dealer gave me the incorrect information about the recall. i was driving for a long time with my car in limp mode and a malfunctioning throttle body. i am sure that the dealer was obligated to replace the throttle body, since it is part of the acceleration system. i think you should compel them to replace my throttle body or guarantee replacement if my throttle body malfunctions again.

I'm a new owner of a 2001 s80 t6 with 66k miles. second day of ownership i'm on my way home in the passing lane of a freeway in ma, traffic slows to a stop. as i accelerate the car stalls. i pull to the left of the traveling lane, put the car in park, restart the vehicle. the next day, i pull up to a red light, accelerate and the car stalls. i put it in park, restart the car, and away i go. no messages, no check engine, no codes that i know of. i travel 100 miles a day, and the problem occurs at least every other day. this problem in intermittant and extremely dangerous. the highway i travel on allows travel in breakdown lanes during rush hour. i need to travel in the right travel lane always in the event of another stall. dealership cleaned the electronic throttle module. problem continues. returned to the dealership. they say, no codes, no new throttle. that's the volvo policy, gallo volvo, worcester, mass. lou is the service manager. how many times does my car need to unexpectedly stall before my car shows a code so i can repair my faulty etm? it's dangerous to my family and me.

We began reporting problems with hesitation and surging in our 2001 s80 t6 several years ago to the service department at our nearest dealer, sill terhar motors in broomfield, colorado. they tried replacing a turbo valve and a software upgrade that was available at the time, and we were told that using the highest octane fuel would be necessary in order to prevent the hesitation. the problem continued. given the inconvenience of the dealers location and that they had not seemed to be able to correct the problem, we had the vehicle serviced for a while at an independent volvo mechanic. last fall the emissions and check engine warning lights turned on, and they replaced an oxygen sensor and/or mass air sensor. the warning lights turned on again, and they recommended that we go to the service department at the dealer. we learned of the extended warranty volvo was beginning to offer as a result of the problems in the design of the electronic throttle module. in early december we left the vehicle with the service department at sill terhar, and they did the software upgrade. within days the vehicle was running horribly and was stalling in intersections. sill terhar had the vehicle towed and reported that the problem was due to a hose that had not been fastened securely. due to travel during the holidays and the multiple snowstorms in colorado in late december, we drove this vehicle in early january after having put only about 100 miles on the vehicle since the time that it was reportedly fully cleared of problems with regard to the etm, the check engine warning light turned on again. we returned to sill terhar, and they said that the problem was due to a faulty right front oxygen sensor. they were certain that this was unrelated to the etm problem. that most recent work cost us $400. we picked up the vehicle last friday evening and, today, only a few days later, the check engine warning light has turned on yet again. *jb

My 2001 volvo s-80 suddenly lost all power and came to a stop and would not restart. this occurred in sept. 2003. the dealership, beach volvo in myrtle beach, sc, wanted over $600 to repair the auto since it was beyond the 50,000 mile warranty. it had 60,000 miles at the time. after a lengthy discussion with volvo america, they agreed to split the cost between myself, the dealership and volvo america. the electronic throttle body was replaced. on 12/05/05 the same thing happened. the car now has 82,700 miles. it is being looked at by beach volvo at this moment. *nm

I own a 2001 volvo s80, 4 dr. sedan which i am in the process of trading in because on 3 different occasions this year (2005) the car stalled, the last time i needed to have it towed. after doing some research i noted that volvo had reached an agreement regarding complaints filed in california about the etm module. i believe that was the cause of my stalling. i did have the part replaced, at my expense and the mechanic showed me the part that would not stay closed consequently causing the car to stall. at no time was there an indication that there was a problem - no warning light. while i love the car, i don't feel i can trust it even though a new part was put in. according to the volvo dealer, part would not be replaced unless warning indicator came on. the last time the car stalled was thanksgiving night. *nm

Well, well - let's see, i bought a 2001 volvo s-80, t-6 in february 2005 to replace my 1996 740 il bmw - i thought i would get a more economical and safe car. boy was i wrong! to my disgust i paid almost $20,000 for this used car and within weeks it started acting up. it turned out to be the mass airflow sensor and the throttle body. i finally - 9 months after purchasing the car - have had to get it fixed - over $1200.00. i, like another person who filed a complaint, was making a left hand turn on a very busy road, and the car died while in the middle of my turn. luckily i was able to put it in neutral quick enough and restart it before i got hit. the car also surges dangerously at stops. if you don't have your foot on the brake 110%, the car would lurch forward and hit the car in front of it. i'm so disappointed in this car i will never buy another volvo. so much for looking forward to one day purchasing this safe car. now that i have dumped lots of money into this car, taken vacation time to pick it up and drop it off, it works okay. the throttle body was replaced about 2 weeks ago, but the car still feels like its not giving me 100% - but at least it isn't stalling or surging. i still have my bmw - thank goodness. i'll be getting rid of this volvo. ford bought volvo and they are responsible for making this unreliable car. i also understand that there a class action lawsuit against volvo (ford) - it's time they do the right thing and reimburse customers who have been subjected to this dangerous and poorly designed fuel system. *jb

Etm bad/ electronic throttle module this has been a nightmare and it's not resolved yet! i bought my used volvo s-80 t6 october 20 th with 76,000 miles. within the day of ownership the service engine required light came on, and i failed mass inspection. i tried to get my money back, but i bought out of state, and they refuse to return calls. i researched the problem and found it was the etm. on wednesday nov 10th 2005, i called my local dealer pioneer volvo in south deerfield mass 1 800 680 2140, and was informed that the etm warranty expired at 70,000 miles, at 76,000 mile, there was no warranty. i asked him about known problems with the etm, and denied that he was aware of any! i asked him for an appointment, explained that he is the closest dealer at 47 minutes away, and that i needed help asap due to failed emissions. he told me bring it in...at 9 30 am and maybe i'll look at it....when i asked him for a guaranteed time....he said ...maybe in 2 weeks i decided to fix the problem myself by cleaning the etm, which i understand helps temporarily. i had no choice being i am extremely busy in an unflexible job and financially strapped. however, when reinstalling the etm, the bolts are designed to sheer. the bolt snapped and i have been under my car for 3 days....still can't extract it. i need my car! i need it to pass inspection! why won't volvo cover this? *nm

I was driving down a us highway when i noticed my car was 'lurching' forward then would loose speed all together kind of like it wanted to stall. i would push on the accelerator and nothing would happen, then all of a sudden the car would drive normally. i was about a mile from my work, so i didn't pull over immediately. the next two stop lights i almost stalled, but didn't. at the third traffic light on another us highway, i wasn't so lucky - my car stalled and would not re-start. i had to call for a tow truck. my service report states that the code ecm-130a was detected. i figured for sure this would be covered under my extended warranty. volvo said no as it was 'just a dirty throttle unit'. they supposedly took it apart, cleaned it, replaced a gasket, upgraded the ecm pet, and put it all back together and told me to be sure to use premium gasoline by only a reputable gas station, and once every few months use a fuel system cleaner and i shouldn't have any more problems. *nm

Surging idle speed. car lurches forward at times when accelerating from a stop. car almost stalls when idling in bumper to bumper traffic, requiring you to press on the gas to keep it from stalling, but this makes the car lurch forward even more. several times i have almost hit the car in front of me. this problem is due to a faulty etm (electronic throttle module) that is described in the nhtsa defect investigation shown below. the etm in my car was replaced two years ago at 46k miles but the same symptoms are recurring. nhtsa action number : pe05041 nhtsa recall campaign number : n/a make : volvo model: s80 manufacturer : volvo cars of n.a. llc. year : 2001 component : vehicle speed control date investigation opened : july 26, 2005 date investigation closed : open summary: the office of defects investigation (odi) has received one hundred and thirty-one (131) consumer complaints alleging a variety of concerns resulting from failure of the electronic throttle control module (etm) in the subject vehicles, including a sudden loss of speed and steering assist when driving in highway traffic and sudden and complete stall without warning. in some instances, it has been reported that the vehicles would restart, and in some cases the vehicles were towed. some consumers allege that after having the etm replaced the new component failed in a similar manner. a preliminary evaluation has been opened to determine the scope, frequency, and potential safety-related consequences of the alleged defect. *jb

Purchased 2001 volvo s80 about a month and a half ago. in the past two weeks the vehicle has developed an engine surge and on two occasions has simply lost power while traveling at 55 miles per hour. both times a message was displayed stating reduced performance but the vehicle had no power at all. after pulling on to the shoulder i was able to get it started again. the problem has subsequently been diagnosed as the etm. the car is now parked while i try to raise the money to have it fixed. as a retired state trooper i can only say that this is a very dangerous situation and i hope the nhtsa and volvo will not wait until there are injuries or fatalities to correct the problem. *nm

Dt: the contact owns a 2001 volvo s80. the vehicle will begin to buck at highway speeds. the cruise control will drop off at random and stop working before the bucking starts. sometimes at start up it will idle really rough. the contact purchased the vehicle on july 16, 2005 and this problem has been occurring ever since he purchased the vehicle. the vehicle will completely stall as well as run at low speeds. the vehicle failed at least 50 times since he purchased the vehicle. the consumer was not the original owner. the problem has been diagnosed as the electronic throttle module, but has not been fixed at this point. *ak *jb

The vehicle began idling roughly about 2 weeks ago. it has gotten progressively worse to the point where it stalls in traffic and at stop lights. it also frequently revs itself up. the service department at my dealer has told me that the throttle controller has failed and that it will cost $880 to repair. i read that there is an investigation in to the failure of this part. it seems very dangerous to me and i am concerned enough to report it as it potentially may cause the drive to lose control or the failure could cause an accident. *nm

Car surged and ran unevenly. it was difficult to accelerate without surging ahead. took it in for service and they performed software upgrades to ecm and etm. then, a month later, the car stalled in the middle if an intersection and would not restart. the car was towed to the dealer and the etm was replaced as well as the mass air flowmeter. software was then reloaded. it has worked well since then. *nm

I own a 2001 volvo s80. i have had trouble with the electronic throttle module not responding to the throttle inputs and surging at idle. it would sometimes kill the car without warning when coming to a stop (losing power-steering while in turns) or make the car lunge forward unexpectedly. the lunging forward has almost caused accidents at intersections. i've been lucky for now, but i will not let my wife drive the car while it is doing this because she may not be able to control the car without power steering and brakes. i took it in for repair and they told me that it was the electronic throttle module, and they need replacing after a while, so i replaced it. 4 months later, i'm experiencing the same idle problems as well as the lunging problems. i am being told that it is the same problem with the throttle module. i've looked at many website forums and found many other people have the same problem through out the globe. there have also been times when it has died while in reverse and i loose power brakes while backing, without notice. i would request a recall and an improved part. usa today is also reporting on this issue as well: http://yahoo.usatoday.com/money/autos/2005-08-01-volvo_x.htm?csp=1 forum web site: http://www.volvoxc.com/forums/showthread.php?mode=hybrid&t=6026 thank you for your time. *nm

I was on the ramp getting on to the highway, and all of a sudden the car stalled. i could not accelerate, and a semi was going to hit the back of my car because i got out there in front of him and then i can't move. so to avoid the accident, i darted of the highway unto the shoulder with the dismay of the truck driver. the information in the left corner gave performance reduced. i didn't know what happened. so i had it towed, and without finding anything the first day, they found that it was the electronic throttle module. so i had to pay over $1000 to get this fixed. this was back in march, and now i am having the same problem. i am not going to pay another $1000 for the same thing. i almost got into an accident and i already paid over $1000 to get it fixed, and now i have to come out of pocket again only 4 months later. this is horrible, and volvo should recall all the cars with this electronic throttle module. i have almost got into an accident several time because of the result of this defect. i refuse to get it fixed, because volvo will not pay for it. i have had it replaced once before, and it is still doing the same thing. volvo needs to take care of this, because it is obviously a defect on their end. please help to get this fixed. i don't have another $1000 to get this fixed every three to four months!!! *nm

I was driving on i-75 interstate and when i went to pass a vehicle in the left lane i felt a sudden loss of power in my engine. i then had to cut across 4 lanes of expressway traffic to get my car onto the shoulder. then my car stalled out. whenever i restarted it, it would stall back out again. the auto shop told me that i needed to replace my electronic throttle module, mass air flow sensor, and gas pedal sensor costing me well over $2000. (the old parts are at my house, i've kept them). *nm

Dt: the vehicle is a 2001 volvo s80. the consumer's daughter was driving the vehicle in traffic when it stalled in the middle of the freeway. she was able to get the vehicle to restart but when she put the vehicle into drive it went backwards. when the consumer got there he tried to get it to go forward and it went backwards. they called for a tow truck to take it to the dealer. when the consumer took it to the dealer they told him that it was the throttle body- etm that failed. this was because the banjo fitting had carbon build up. the throttle body is covered by warranty. and the cleaning of the banjo fitting is not. the consumer feels that it should be part of the manufactures preventive maintenance. when he contacted the manufacture they told him that he could not speak to the people there that decide what is covered as normal wear and tear. the vehicle has not been repaired as of yet, although he does intend to have it repaired. *nm

Continuous problem with surging engine at idle. when stopped at a traffic light or coasting towards one, the engine surges unevenly inceasing the risk of an accident. i believe the cause is a faulty electric throttle module etm. dealer will on;y replace a map sensor, but problem continues to exist.

Do to the failure of the electron throttle module my engine has a loss in rpm and dies during certian periods of driving. it is mainly as i come to a stop or when the engine tries to idle. this has happened a number of times. i've had the engine trouble-shooted from failed spark plugs, to failed fuel injectors, but it turns out that the etm was the problem. as the engine dies, all power steering is gone as well as hydrolic breaks. i've had the engine die on me twice in the middle of a turn and i've almost been in accidents both times because the wheel wouldn't turn do to loss of steering pressure. the engin also surges sometimes while stopped. this abrupt increase in rpm moves the car forward and has the potential of causing a rearend collision. i have read many online forums about this etm by that manufacture on volvo vehicles. i would like to strongly encourage there to be a recall on item. i understand why it would be desirable to use electrol throttle, but this defective part has a risk to cause loss of life.*ak

The throttle control module on my 2001 volvo s80 went bad and the car immediately powered down and was not drivable. i was going up a hill on a road without a shoulder and with a blind curve and had to sit there for several minutes before i could start the car again and proceed. this placed my wife and myself in a very dangerous position. my understanding from the dealer is that this could have happened on the interstate and would have left the car powerless as well. in my discussions with the dealer and with an independent volvo service facility the throttle control module has been replaced on several of the s80 vehicles. it appears that this may be a design flaw or that the part has a very limited lifetime. since the failure of the module could occur at any time it seems like this should be a recall item and should be replaced on all s80s at not cost to the consumer.*ak

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL - CRUISE CONTROL
07/23/2005690001
Dt: on july 23 while driving on interstate at 75 mph the owner noticed the performance reduced lightcame on . the cruise control shut off by itself. then owner pushed the gas, there was a feeling of loss of power. then, the owner got off on the nearest exit. stopped for a second, an d the car seemed sluugish.the owner continued on the trip and shut the car off. when the car was turned back on the owner noticed the performance reduced light went off. the owner took it to a mechanic who said that since the light wasn't on the computer would not find the code. the mechanic said go ahead and drive it since no warning lights were showing right now. then on august 9 while going 75 mph. the performance reduced light came on and at the same the time cruise control went off and would not come back on.there was a feeling of loss of power. the owner took it direclty to the mechanic who advised the car was showing a code indicating a problem with the electronic throttle module. so the owner will take the car to the dealership tomorrow. the owner called the dealerhsip who advised that there was no recall and the owner should just bring in the car for inspection. the owner called volvo and they have advised that they are not helping with the cost of repair becuase there is no recall.did the vehicle completely stall out and die or did it lose power and operate at a reduced speed? reduced speedif no crashes or injuries were there any near-misses caused by the problem? the owner says no near misses yet.the owner will take it to dealer tomorrow. volvo has advised they will not help pay for repair.has the etm has never been replaced. *ak
