This car has been well cared since we got it at the day one. all schedule maintenance have been done at a volvo dealer. we have spend over $7000 on repairs and maintenance over the years. but its transmission started to slip since feb 2011 when there was only 100,000 miles on it. we took it to the dealer. they suggested a transmission fluid change. we followed their suggestion as we always did. but that did not resolved the problem. the transmission still does not work properly. we took it to the dealer again this oct, and the dealer said the transmission fluid was all black. along with the problem we meet, they conclude the transmission is about to die, and the one fix is to replace with a new one which will cost $4500! we would expect the transmission of a well-care volvo would last longer than 100,000 miles. as i did some research on internet, i found many 99-02 volvo owners have the similar unfortunate issue. i would like nhtsa look into this issue, and initiate a recall on transmission of 2002 volvo v70.

Vehicle lunges forward from second to third gear and bangs into gear from second to first gear. took the vehicle to volvo dealership and had a software update. a mechanic test drove the vehicle afterwards and we were told the transmission needed to be replaced. mileage was 132,00. visited a local mechanic and he said he had serviced several volvo s60 and v70 models of the 2001~2002 model year and had found that several had experienced the same problem with only a transmission replacement to resolve the issue. i have checked many volvo forums and can not believe how many stories there are of these cars with the same problem. volvo...this is a legitimate problem.

Volvo reluctantly released us from our lease a couple of months ago. our first volvo experienced electrical and transmission problems. they put us in another volvo which experienced transmission problems as well. after repeated attempts on volvo of dallas' part to repair our car they finally replaced the transmission however the new transmission was not performing properly either when volvo released us from the lease. the dealership, area/regional directors, and volvo corporation practiced poor business etiquette on all accounts in our opinion. they did release us from our lease however, refused to reimburse us for our initial $5000.00 down payment. our entire volvo experience disgusted us so that we chose not to endure the lengthly process of a law suit. we just wanted to drive a safe, dependable, reliable vehicle that fit our families needs. too much to ask from volvo! it is a shame because when we got into our volvo we planned on being volvo customers "for life." good luck.

Improper shift of automatic transmission from reverse to drive and in certain slowing down condition which cause car to lurch (slow down as in making a right/left turn). dealer first stated that problem was with onboard software, now saying the car needs a new transmission. internet search concludes that this is not an isolated condition.

Transmission began slipping around 90,000 miles. changing from 2nd to 3rd was a pressurized build up resulting in a lunge forward or bucking of vehicle. several times trying to get across traffic lanes almost resulted in near crash due to transmission not changing gear. putting car in gear resulted in a bucking forward or lunge. volvo advised a new transmission but advised us of a computer download that might fix the problem. after the download the car drove great for about three weeks. then it began again. when on a trip the jerking in changing was so violent the gas line was forced loose from the fuel filter causing a stall in traffic. fortunately we were able to push the car out of traffic and waited for a mechanic to arrive to re-install the line to the filter. volvo dealer was about three miles down the road but refused to come out stating too much going on and that they could help but would wait until the next day since so close to 5 pm. independent mechanic came to help. a new trans was installed but with less than 5000 miles the problem seems to be coming back. also the brake booster went out. a failed recalled part left us stranded when we first bought the car and we paid the towing fees to volvo

POWER TRAIN - AXLE ASSEMBLY
01/16/2004210002
During operation of the vehicle during cold weather, the driver noticed a hesitation when applying pressure to the accelerator pedal and heard a slight crunching sound. at a later date, consumer was driving approx. 35-45 mph on a road with hills (up and down). while driving up an incline, the driver experienced same hesitation and heard a horrible punching sound. the vehicle came to a complete stop while another vehicle rapidly approached from the rear. the other vehicle had to swerve suddenly to avoid hitting consumer's vehicle. the consumer & passenger had to roll vehicle down the hill and call for help. dealer examined vehicle and determined that the left axle had pulled out of the transmission (due to a pin that had broke). the dealer performed a temporary fix by banging axle back into the transmission. also, dealer found that the left ball joint was broken (unknown when this occurred). dealer later replaced entire transmission. *mjj consumer would like to know if there are other reports regarding safety related issues on volvo v70. *la
