Tl*the contact owns a 2000 volvo v70xc. the contact believes that the electronic throttle module is a safety hazard. she stated that the vehicle will suddenly hesitate and come to a complete stop. while driving 60 mph, the vehicle had a sudden loss of power. all of the instrument panel lights illuminated and the power steering failed. the speed decreased from 60 mph to 0. she was able to pull off the road and stated that the entire electrical system was not working. the vehicle was towed to a shop and they stated that the cause of failure was electrical. the vin and engine size were unknown. the current and failure mileages were 51,247.

Vehicle went into 'limp home mode' on highway. speed went from 65 mph in passing lane to 15 mph. i had to cross 4 lanes of traffic to get to the break down lane. auto is 2000 volvo v70 cross country wagon. ets system was replaced at 66,800 miles when this problem occurred before. the car now exhibits the same behavior at 122,000 miles. *jb

I have a 2000 volvo v70 cross country wagon. the problem began in december 2005. car starts but immediately dies, starts but dies, starts but dies and then, finally, catches. this has happened on about 15 occasions since dec 10, 2005 and takes about 3 to 6 tries before engine catches. car surged once while on the highway. i had the computer replaced in jan 2005 (before this problem emerged), the starter motor replaced (june), the thermostat replaced (january 2006) and recently the catalytic converter replaced (latter covered under warranty). i have only 75,000 miles on this car and it's beginning to feel like a lemon. the service dealer put me off when i stated that it must have something to do with the electronic throttle module. i don't have all the old parts but maybe either the thermostat of the catalytic converter. i can't take the car any distance for fear that i won't be able to start it. the dealer says the check engine light has to come on and indicate etm failure before they are obligated to replace the etm. the check engine light did come on for the 2 problems, thermostat and catalytic converter. i don't want to blame the dealer for failing to respond because they did replace the catalytic converter as an under-warranty item and they did seem to honestly look for the problem. but we all know the etm is waiting to fail and might even be in the process of failing. why wasn't volvo forced into a recall for this problem? i'd appreciate any help you can give. thanks. *jb

Car began to run in an uncontrollable manner, speeding up then loosing power while shaking violently. my wife was driving with my daughter in the car. they were terrified. i drove it after she called for help it was a terrible ride. had this occurred in traffic on one of the many high speed roads around here, this could have been a tragic event. the following morning it acted the same and i drove it to the nearest volvo repair shop. it was determined that it was a failed electronic throttle body. the repair cost as over $1100. it was not covered by the extended warranty i had purchased for the car. i had the car repaired. the shop told me that they had seen many such failures in volvos at about 50k . they joked it was a serious mid-life crisis for volvos. i did not find it funny. it was a devastating, unplanned cost. i called volvo, they were not interested in cost sharing or any sort of help. *jb

Dt: the consumer states: the etm light was coming on and the vehicle would lose power when this occurred. the consumer had to stop the vehicle and restart it. this would happen at all speeds. the consumer was the original owner of the vehicle. the consumer had not replaced the etm and had been told by the dealer that the etm was bad. *ak (11/17/05) *sc

Dt: the consumer was having a problem with 2000 volvo v70 xc losing power and then surging while driving 20-25 mph. the consumer did not make it up a hill . the loss of power even occurred when the car was slowing to stop and turning. this happened twice. then, it was surging and smoking, and surging with no smoking, the car was wobbly and sluggish. dealer replaced the following parts; spark plugs, coils, thermostat, and the filters. other parts have been flushed, this included fuel injectors and ignition. the car has been at the dealer once, a certified volvo specialist once, and at pep boys once. the consumer had to pay $1300.00 to figure out what was wrong with the car. the car has had 2 diagnostic tests done. no one knew what was wrong with the car. the engine light came on, and was turned off. the consumer contacted the manufacturer, and they pretended that they did not know anything. the consumer had all the necessary documentation. however, at this point, no one knew what was wrong with the car. *ak

Bought used 2000 volvo v70 xc 3 weeks ago. driving 35 mph when the car started shaking, felt like bucking & flat tire. then the car just died. etc (electronic throttle control / module) light came on. i was told it would cost at least $900 to fix and that only a volvo dealer could fix it, not my volvo mechanic. i was told by volvo over the telephone that this was being looked into that other people have had a similar problem. if i was going any faster i feel as though it would have caused an extreme safety issue. luckily i was on a back road in vt and there were no other cars on the road. it was also very difficult to get the car completely off of the road because it would not run at all. i could not move it on my own.

Ets dashboard light on 2000 volvo v70 xc came on while driving approx. 35 mph. car immediately hesitated and slowed to a speed of approx. 15 mph, then came to a traffic light and engine shut down. after several attempts to restart engine, it did start and arrived at destination which was car repair shop. traffic behind vehicle was stopped while attempts made to restart car, amid much honking of horns and angry comments. on at least four previous occasions within two weeks prior to this incident, ets warning light came on, and except for one occasion when car stalled but could be maneuvered to side of road, engine hesitated but did not shut down. hence the trip to the car repair shop on this date. as i write this, the ets system is being evaluated and the throttle body is being replaced. *nm

As i was driving the engine would momentarily loose power, then resume & the ets light would come on. the ets light went out after a while. i reported this to my service people and was told that this was an intermittent problem and to bring it in when the light stayed on. this happened approximately 10 times and the last time it happened i had just gotten onto the expressway and the car lost power. i was in the middle of fast moving traffic and the car would not move. many cars had to swerve around me causing a grave traffic hazard. i was very lucky that no one hit my car and possibly causing serious injury. i called for a tow truck and after waiting about 15 minutes i decided to try and start my , the ets light was still on. fortunately the engine had regained power and i was able to drive off the expressway and bring it to be serviced. *jb

I own a 2000 v70 xc volvo. at approximately 56,000 miles the ets (electronic throttle system) light came on. since then the car seems to have instances of acceleration hesitation. i am the second owner of the vehicle. i purchased it approximately three years ago with less than 30,000 miles from a private party. all required and recommended maintenance has been performed by the dealer or by trained volvo mechanics on the recommended schedule by both me and the prior owner. i am aware that this appears to be a frequent problem with the 99-01 volvo xcs. i have contacted the original dealer and received no satisfaction about replacing what clearly appears to be a defective part based on my prior experience with similar vehicles. the dealer said the problem could have a number of causes and that an electronic diagnostic test was necessary to identify the source. given my understanding of other owners' experiences i requested that they perform the test at their expense ($70) in the interests of safety and to help volvo better understand the cause of the problem. the dealer declined. my owner's manual does not discuss any required or recommended maintenance for the associated parts or system. i and the prior owner have always used the recommended quality of fuel (91 octane). i do view the potential failure of the ets as a significant safety risk based on the potential for failure at highway speeds and the rapid loss of speed in heavy traffic. much of my driving of this car is on freeways with 75 mph speed limits and with heavy traffic volumes. from the currently available research it would appear that this is an issue for which volvo should accept responsibility and provide appropriate replacement parts. given the experience of others and the apparent safety risk this does not appear to be a regular maintenance/parts simply wear out situation. *jb

I would like to add my name to the number of people complaining about their volvo's engine stalling repeatedly without warning. i believe this might be from the unit that regulates the amount of air into the vehicles engine. i purchased my 2000 volvo v70xc from santa monica volvo in october 2001 and it is still under warranty. over the last year and a half my engine has stalled over 20 times while driving without any warning. several times this occurred while i was driving 65 miles an hour on a freeway that almost resulted in serious car accidents. sometimes i can restart the car immediately, other times the car has to sit for a while, but four times i had to have the car towed. the first time the engine died on july 5, 2004 i had the car towed to a volvo repair shop in valencia, california. the next morning the repair shop called and told me the car started for them without any problems. so i drove to santa monica volvo on july 7, 2004 and their service department replaced the battery. two months later (september 1, 2004) when the cars engine died again while i was driving, the car was towed to santa monica volvo and the service department told me that nothing was wrong with my car. i told the service department that i did not want the car back until they found what was wrong with it. the service representative then spoke to a manager and called me back to say that my alternator was putting out low voltage and they replaced it. then on june 30th my volvo lost all power again while i was driving and wouldn't start. the car was towed back to santa monica volvo where i was told they needed to do a throttle body cleaning and then replace the mass air flow meter for a total of $708. i bought my volvo for safety reasons and i have never felt more unsafe driving a car. i sincerely hope that your investigation leads to a recall of my volvo. it is the biggest lemon that i have ever owned! *jb *sc

On 1/20/05, our 2000 volvo v70 xc with 74215 miles on the odometer started to lose power, and run erratically. the ets light came on the dashboard. we managed to get it to a local import specialist about 2 miles away from the incident. left us stranded in winchester without transportation. told import specialist to inspect and clean the etm module, which they did. said they couldn't replace it because of the programming issues. cost us. $121.85. car worked without ets light coming on until 2/17/05. took it to fairfax volvo on 2/18/05. they replaced the etm module. there was 75005 miles on the odometer. cost to us was $859.66 parts and labor. since then, the car has not had the ets light come on. *jb

2 weeks ago my 2000 v70 xc abruptly loss acceleration power, where the vehicle could not go over 20 mph and then stalled which lost power steering ability while my wife was driving on the highway with my 2 young children. luckily, she pulled over to the side of the highway and avoided an accident. she shut the car off and restarted with no apparent problem and drove the remainder of the way with her hazards on. the car had just been back from the volvo dealer after dealing with another unrelated issue approx a week earlier. i drove the car to the volvo dealer and experienced the same problem, but was driving cautiously. the dealer replaced the electronic throttle module which cost approx $1,000.00. i previously had the same problem with a 1999 volvo s80 t6, which i subsequently sold due to repeated attempts to fix the problem!! *jb

My volvo v70 xc also has required replacement of the etm - electronic throttle module costing $1350. after, like many others have stated, losing all power, shutting down, locking up, causing me and those around me a near death experience on the highway. i had the car towed to the garage only to be told they could not find anything wrong. the car continued to drive in a very unpredictable manner, losing acceleration, stalling, dying, another near death experience when it died in an intersection, multiple tows and several different garages, several hundred dollars of no answers later, one garage was aware of the commonality of this problem and replaced the etm. this was at ~65k miles. now at 92k and i am beginning to have the same problems-car dying, going into limp home mode-20 mph with no acceleration, another $1000 in repairs without any resolution to problems. it feels like the etm might be going again. this is ridiculous and dangerous! we are talking about cars that cost over $30000!! *jb

The electronic throttle module (etm) has failed twice on my 2000 volvo v70xc. the first time it was still under warranty, the second was about 17k miles after the first. both times it failed while driving on highway at high speed. both times engine stalled in traffic. both times managed to get to shoulder, restart, and get home with car alternately surging and stalling the whole way. both times had my preschool age twins in the car and didn't feel it safe to stop on the shoulder to wait for help. also, would have had a difficult time getting them home safety (in their car seats). then had car towed to dealer for repair. first failure - car mileage was 41,222, repair date was 6/25/03. quote from annapolis volvo service receipt: ets lamp comes on and vehicle surges badly, almost stalled. internal fault inspected and found codes ecm903f/904d/9150/9160/904c. tested and replaced elec. throttle module this work was done under warranty. second failure - car mileage was 58,611, repair date was 3/15/05. quote from annapolis volvo service receipt: ets light is on internal fault volvo goodwill warranty-volvo to pay parts dealer labor checked and retrieve code-ecm 959f, 903f-traced and found internal fault in etm, replaced etm, reload software and clear codes. *jb
