ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

We own a 2000 volvo v70 xc wagon. it was purchased new. in the last 4 months we have had the car into the volvo garage (tom wood) to have it fixed for rough running and failure to start. the first time we were charged over $600 to replace the etm and a cleaning. it did not help fix the problem. we then tried an independent foreign car garage. they cleaned the throttle body but again the problem persists. we now have the car back in the volvo garage because in addition to rough running, it now fails to start on a random basis. i read today about your preliminary investigation into this problem - your file number pe05041. i can only say that this is a real, and serious, problem. while we have been lucky that the engine failure did not happen at speed, it has caused major inconvenience, unproductive costs, and significant loss of time. please pursue this investigation with all haste. thank you. *jb

After a change of oil at the dealership i drove 168 miles. when i tried to start the car the oil warning light went on. i tried to check the oil level and a burst of oil came out of the stick pit. i had the car towed back to the dealer. *ak we waited three weeks for a part to replace the turbo, but the mechanic couldn't find oil pressure. now they are asking for 2,700 dollars to open the engine and see what is the problem or 6 thousand to replace the engine. i had the warning light on two times before, first time i paid to replace some sealers, the second time they couldn't find the problem. (i complained about having to add oil) their answer was that after 100,000 miles is considered normal.

Dt: the consumer was having a problem with 2000 volvo v70 xc losing power and then surging while driving 20-25 mph. the consumer did not make it up a hill . the loss of power even occurred when the car was slowing to stop and turning. this happened twice. then, it was surging and smoking, and surging with no smoking, the car was wobbly and sluggish. dealer replaced the following parts; spark plugs, coils, thermostat, and the filters. other parts have been flushed, this included fuel injectors and ignition. the car has been at the dealer once, a certified volvo specialist once, and at pep boys once. the consumer had to pay $1300.00 to figure out what was wrong with the car. the car has had 2 diagnostic tests done. no one knew what was wrong with the car. the engine light came on, and was turned off. the consumer contacted the manufacturer, and they pretended that they did not know anything. the consumer had all the necessary documentation. however, at this point, no one knew what was wrong with the car. *ak
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING - COOLING SYSTEM - FAN

Upon exiting the highway, after traveling at speed for 30 minutes, a knocking sound came from the engine. the engine stalled at the end of the exit ramp and steam was evolving from the engine compartment. the temperature gauge was at maximum. steam was evolving near the turbo at the firewall. the engine cooling fan was not running, but making a buzzing sound. the engine oil was hot, steam or smoke evolved from the dip-stick tube, but the level was good. the coolant bottle was empty. i tried to start the engine, the engine cranked rapidly, as if there was no compression, and more steam was produced at the exhaust side of the head. i pushed the vehicle to a nearby service station. the service station topped off the coolant bottle, placed the vehicle on a lift and cranked the engine. from below, coolant could be seen exiting the exhaust side of the engine. i had the vehicle towed to a nearby foreign vehicle service station for further evaluation. this station determined there is no compression in cylinders #2 through #5, and only 40 psig in cylinder #1. the timing belt is in place. the station believes the engine head is cracked or warped and suggests there may be considerable bottom end damage as well such as pistons, rings, and cylinder sleeves due to excessive heat. i contacted volvo cars and explained that this incident seems very similar to the current nhtsa campaign # 04v451000 regarding engine cooling system fan failure on 2000-2001 v70's and 2001 v70xc's (and other models). volvo contends my vehicle (a 2000 v70xc) is not included in this recall. volvo customer service was not able to confirm the cooling fan on my vehicle is different than the defective fan covered by the recall. *jb

Our 2000 volvo xc70 stationwagon experienced sluggish speed on a wednesday - it did not like to accelerate. it was also going through oil, which the volvo dealership said was normal for a car of this age - it only had 80,000 miles on it. on thursday, the car would not start (it was very cold). we took the car to the repair shop and they found that it has oil pump problem that does not get oil into the engine. we therefore need a new engine. he also noted issues with the drive train. *tr

While driving my 2000 volvo v70xc on the highway, the car took itself out of cruise control and began to flucuate +/- 3 mph in speed. the ets light came on too. after pulling off the highway and turning the engine off, i re-started the car and drove home without incident. my local mechanic (hoshi motors of boulder, co) downloaded the engine codes (904d, 91ac) which he said indicated that the etm needed to be replaced. the etm was replaced on 7/27/05 at a cost of $908.60. the problem has not occurred again. the etm was returned to me and is available. this complaint is related to nhtsa action number pe05041. *jb

On a trip alone to virginia from louisville ky when car slowed down and the check engine light came on. i was in a desolate part of the mountains in w.va when this occurred. i immediately called the dealer in louisville, ky where i had purchased the vehicle and after explaining the situation they told me to not pull over or stop but to keep going,i could not get the car to go over about 45 mph, and they would look up the closest dealership to where i was going and call me back. they did this and it was charlottesville va which was an hour from my destination. they would not be open until the following day so i called them and took my car to them and they replaced the mass air flow part #8670263-6 for a total of $268.45 on 12/3/04. when i returned to louisville and told my dealership there was no offer to reimburse me for this expense. i had 62,064 miles on my v70xc wagon at that time and no warranty was in effect. i read an article about this in the courier-journal newspaper today, august 2, 2005 and felt like there are probably many, many more complaints that you have not been contacted about. if i can supply you with any other information please don't hesitate to contact me. i do a great deal of highway travel and am alone so i bought this car so that i would be safe on all of my highway trips. *nm

At highway speeds (60 mph), on an uphill grade, the car was attempting to shift between gears. the car lost power and rpm indication began to fluctuate between 1800 and 2300 rpm. the ets light came on and the car continued to intermittently lose power for the remainder of our trip home (roughly 60 miles). the car has 57,000 miles on it and sounds very similar to other complaints i have been reading. since then, the car repeats these symptoms at any speed in the two trips to 1) local mechanic and 2) dealer vehicle purchased at. *la

Purchased car in dec 2006. within few months, began to notice the car would lose speed on highway and drop to a speed anywhere between 60-80km/hr. black smoke rolled out exhaust. took car to dealership (where previous owners maintained car). several filters, seals, replaced. few months later the same problem continued. returned to dealership and told car needed catalytic converter. after being told the cost, dealership called back to say under emissions warranty. $1200 part was covered but i paid labor/other parts. dealer was asked on both occasions to complete service due. failed to complete these as requested. problems continued. this time the dealership told me that ets was gone causing the car to go into limp mode. repairs done at a cost of all $2600.00. less than a year, same problem occurred. the oil light came on (though there was oil in the car). the car was towed two hours back home . when i took the car to a different independent garage they (like two others before) told me to volvo. went back to volvo but not before i had to pull over and be towed again. the engine began smoking, the car shook violently, the oil light (which volvo had less than two weeks before said was fine) came on...the report back from volvo is that the ets is gone again but also that the engine required replacing ($6000 job). this was more than two months ago and my car still sits at volvo waiting for resolve. i strongly believe the ongoing issues are directly related to the need for a new engine and that volvo was negligent in their responsibility (repeatedly) to make the necessary repairs. not only am i out the $20 000.00 to purchase the car only two years ago, i am out about $6000 for repairs already completed and am now being told it will be another $6000 to fix this problem. *tr
