My 2000 volvo xc70 developed a dangerous engine condition that needs to be reported and corrected. the dashboard indicated a red ets light which according to the owners manual needs to be diagnosed by a certified volvo mechanic. i took the car to an independent volvo garage who identified the problem as a throttle body malfuntion in the intake of the engine. the garage made a temporary ($300) repair and recommended that i visit a volvo dealer and warned that an appropriate repair would cost as much as $1,000 including parts and labor. according to the various volvo forums, this is a common and costly problem with these volvos. the symptoms include hesitation when accellerating, fluctuating idle rpm and outright stalling. this is a dangerous condition. i have parked the car until i can be reasonably assured that this can be suitably repaired preferrably at volvo expense.

Ets dashboard light on 2000 volvo v70 xc came on while driving approx. 35 mph. car immediately hesitated and slowed to a speed of approx. 15 mph, then came to a traffic light and engine shut down. after several attempts to restart engine, it did start and arrived at destination which was car repair shop. traffic behind vehicle was stopped while attempts made to restart car, amid much honking of horns and angry comments. on at least four previous occasions within two weeks prior to this incident, ets warning light came on, and except for one occasion when car stalled but could be maneuvered to side of road, engine hesitated but did not shut down. hence the trip to the car repair shop on this date. as i write this, the ets system is being evaluated and the throttle body is being replaced. *nm

Electronic throttle module etm causing hesitation while driving in heavy traffic. volvo dealers service manager suggested bringing the car back while the ets warning light was still on. stated that the etm should be cleaned every 30k miles or replaced. nothing in the service manual mentions this type of service. the hesitation was intermittent but very uncomfortable driving while it was happening. *nm

I own a 2000 volvo cross country xc 70 that has experienced stalling and loss of power on several occasions. i contacted the dealer i purchased the car from and they informed me that it was a common problem with volvo's between the mileage of 35,000 and 45,000 miles. they also informed me that the repair was not covered under any recalls or extended warranty. a search of complaints on this type of vehicle on the internet show that there is an above average of failures of what is referred to as the electronic throttle system. i feel that this is something that volvo is aware of but refuses to help the customer with. in my opinion, a $1,300 to $1,600 repair is not normal. volvo/ford needs to address this issue and recall these vehicles as soon as possible. *nm

My son's 2000 volvo 70 xc failed due to a failied electronic throttle module (etm). as a retired engineer i wanted to know why. i have found that it is a common complaint for the 1999, 2000 and 2001 series 60,70 and 80 models at the time of failure the car first exhibits hesitation, surging and erattic idle. at failure it goes into a limp- home mode of 20 miles per hour or stalls. from your web site i have found 101 cases listed for this failure. i have performed failure analysis on 5 units and have identified the problem. it is the wearing out of the throttle position sensor potentiomenter. volvo has consistantly kept the dealers and customers in the dark and blamed the problem on a dirty throttle bore and other erroneous causes. other than the cost of repairs, about $1000, is the realization that the replacement part is of the same design and it too will fail, one correspondent reporting 3 failures of the same type. the failure appears to be accelerated by heat, thus northern tier states have fewer failures than southern states. there are about 860,000 cars world wide with over 250,000 in the us. i estimate that more than 80% will fail, one or moer times, within 100,000 miles. to date no one has been injureid or killed that we know of but stalling on a busy freeway is a dangerous situation. i can send you my reports or you can pick them up off of the internet. i also have failed parts for your examination. please have an investigator contact me. with a direct e-mail address for the investigator i can send my data. don willson, 970 266-9797, donwillson@comcast.net

Our 2000 volvo v70xc ets light came while driving in traffic and i lost control of the car. i could not accelerate and had a truck bearing down on me and my family in the car. i had to coast to a stop and pull over and shut car off in a bad spot. it would not restart and when it did the engine ran very rough. after a few minutes i restarted the car and was able to make it home but with not much faith in my car. the car has been very well cared for and has low miles. dealer says it needs a new etm and will cost upwards of $1000. *nm

 1. our 2000 volvo v70 cross country se with just 67,000 miles on the odometer had surging when under constant throttle on the road. this was followed shortly by having severe throttle response such as having the car abruptly slowed from 55 mph to 10 mph at a constant throttle. my wife, coming home from work late at night, had to drive at a very unsafe 10 mph on a major road. this could have caused an accident had there been heavier traffic. luckily there was not much traffic, and she could pull over to let faster cars pass. 2. the v70 had a etm warning light lit up intermittently on the dashboard during the surging period as well constantly when she had to drive home at 10 mph with the accelerator pedal floored. 3. darling volvo in bangor maine indicated that the cause was the electronic throttle module and associated parts which were failing and needed replacement. 4. darlings volvo estimated the cost to be over $1000 for the repair, parts and labor. we were told that this part can not just be repaired but must be replaced with a new part. another volvo dealer, goodwins volvo in topsham maine said the repair was also about $1000. darlings volvo said that volvo would not assist in the repair, even though i told them that i had read on the internet that this was a problem that was occurring with volvos of this model year to a great extent. 5. after paying for the entire cost of the repair ($1050.48) i was told when i picked up the car that this problem will probably reoccur as the throttle body has design problems that will cause the problem once again. even though so far the car is working fine, knowing that the problem is going to happen again (more $), makes us discouraged about keeping this vehicle as it has cost us too much already for this needless repair that volvo should have taken care of. it does not lend itself to trust any more, especially for a car with only 67,000 miles on it. *nm

Purchased car in dec 2006. within few months, began to notice the car would lose speed on highway and drop to a speed anywhere between 60-80km/hr. black smoke rolled out exhaust. took car to dealership (where previous owners maintained car). several filters, seals, replaced. few months later the same problem continued. returned to dealership and told car needed catalytic converter. after being told the cost, dealership called back to say under emissions warranty. $1200 part was covered but i paid labor/other parts. dealer was asked on both occasions to complete service due. failed to complete these as requested. problems continued. this time the dealership told me that ets was gone causing the car to go into limp mode. repairs done at a cost of all $2600.00. less than a year, same problem occurred. the oil light came on (though there was oil in the car). the car was towed two hours back home . when i took the car to a different independent garage they (like two others before) told me to volvo. went back to volvo but not before i had to pull over and be towed again. the engine began smoking, the car shook violently, the oil light (which volvo had less than two weeks before said was fine) came on...the report back from volvo is that the ets is gone again but also that the engine required replacing ($6000 job). this was more than two months ago and my car still sits at volvo waiting for resolve. i strongly believe the ongoing issues are directly related to the need for a new engine and that volvo was negligent in their responsibility (repeatedly) to make the necessary repairs. not only am i out the $20 000.00 to purchase the car only two years ago, i am out about $6000 for repairs already completed and am now being told it will be another $6000 to fix this problem. *tr

While driving vehicle the fuel line failed in region between fire wall and engine approximately in last foot of pressurized fuel delivery line. another driver detected flow of liquid onto ground below vehicle and alerted me. i pulled vehicle into parking lot and evaluated source of leak. i thought it was possible transmission fluid because i recently had a transmission failure and had volvo replace the transmission. fuel had sprayed on shield over exhaust and onto frame member then onto ground. had the other vehicle driver failed to alert me i could have been killed if the large fuel puddle ignited under the vehicle. i had the vehicle towed to a volvo dealer after the fuel puddles evaporated. the dealer placed a splice in the fuel line after removing part of its covering. the repair staff believed the cause was a weakening of the line due to a possible rodent bite on the line. *nm

Dt: the consumer was having a problem with 2000 volvo v70 xc losing power and then surging while driving 20-25 mph. the consumer did not make it up a hill . the loss of power even occurred when the car was slowing to stop and turning. this happened twice. then, it was surging and smoking, and surging with no smoking, the car was wobbly and sluggish. dealer replaced the following parts; spark plugs, coils, thermostat, and the filters. other parts have been flushed, this included fuel injectors and ignition. the car has been at the dealer once, a certified volvo specialist once, and at pep boys once. the consumer had to pay $1300.00 to figure out what was wrong with the car. the car has had 2 diagnostic tests done. no one knew what was wrong with the car. the engine light came on, and was turned off. the consumer contacted the manufacturer, and they pretended that they did not know anything. the consumer had all the necessary documentation. however, at this point, no one knew what was wrong with the car. *ak

My 2000 volvo v70xc ets light came on and my car engine rpms. were limited to 2 thousand . i had to pull over and shut off my car and restart to temporarily reset it. the dealer wants $1200 to replace the throttle body . the car has been maintained properly, has 77k miles and the throttle body has already been replaced once before 2 years ago. this failure creates dangerous conditions especially on the highway. this is an unsafe design and a known defect by volvo. please encourage volvo to correct this problem. thank you, conrad gauthier

While traveling on the highway ets light in our 2000 volvo v70 xc came on and the engine lost power, causing the car to slow precipitously. had i been on the expressway, this would have been extremely dangerous. as it was, we needed to finish our trip at under 50 mph. the vehicle has only 55000 miles on it. volvo refuses to talk to me about it, since i haven't been having the car serviced by a dealer. this seems very early for this kind of failure. i note at least two other references to similar failures with the v70.*ak

 1. defective throttle body caused engine to shut-off on freeway. 2. engine died. had to limp back into dealer for replacement. 3. new part installed. old part available. if manufacturer has a dealer only repair policy, then there should be notice given to prospective purchasers that vehicle can only be repaired at dealer. notice should be in form of warning decal in engine compartment or some other conspicuous place. dealer only repair policy should be discourage because of lengthy towing when vehicles breakdown outside major cities, i.e. the west. customer should not be required to learn after a breakdown that the vehicle must be towed hundreds of miles to a dealer for repairs. currently such vehicles must be towed past large towns/small cities back to a major urban area to a dealer that can fix the vehicle. mfr. should be required to conspiciously disclose such a requirement. this information is currently concealed by mfr. by omission. requiring conspicous disclosure would encourage mfr. to design, mfr. and sell vehicles that can be fixed within a reasonable distance of where they break down.
