7/26/07 traveling on i-77 and the car ran great. suddenly, in same manner as car did approx 2 yrs ago on same interstate rpms dropped, car lost speed, no response at throttle, and within a few seconds we lost power, brakes, steering. since this seemed just like 2 yrs ago (we reported this incident in 2005) we thought maybe the car will start in 10-15m. after 15-20 m of attempts where car started & immediately stalled car did start and ran fine. since 2 years ago dealers were unable to diagnose & correct we continued to drive that evening and again the following day. the following day the car stalled again on i-? near atlanta, but this time in more traffic with difficulty getting car to side safely. again car started like the evening before. again-similar fuel level. we traveled 2 1/2 more hours on interstate. at destination and local dealer found no faults so no correction was made. after this 2nd occurrence we filled up more often 1/2 full or more. 2 days later and 7 more hrs on road without any problem.. as we arrive. check engine light came on. although car ran fine we took car to local dealer 1 hour away. they said they had a catalytic converter error but they didn't have one in stock. i told them i wasn't sure this was the problem that was causing the stalling because it stalled 2x (+1x 2 years ago) before the check engine light came on. i called my local dealer to discuss and he said he didn't think the catalytic converter was causing the stalling. again, no definitive answers. after we left the dealer, the check engine light was off and it has stayed off. a couple of days later we drove the car 9-10 hours on the interstate to get home. again, i kept the fuel levels approximately 1/2 tank and above. the car performed fine. we are very concerned about the stalling. when i check other complaints listed it appeared that someone else may have had a similar issue with low fuel stalling. please don't hesitate to call to discuss. *jb

I was in a 2001 volvo xc 70, making a left turn when the engine suddenly cut off leaving me with no acceleration as i tried to cross a busy intersection. i had two kids in the car and thank god no one was coming the other way. the car then started to shudder and i turned it off. *jb

This happened while driving our 2001 volvo vxc70 station wagon. on a busy road, driving approximately 40 miles per hour, the car lost engine power and nearly caused a major accident. the power steering and brake systems failed and there was a great deal of difficulty to get the car out of traffic and to the side of the road. this was extremely dangerous! the reason this complaint is being filed is the knowledge that other complaints for this same problem have been filed with your agency. this problem should be the basis for a recall to address whatever fixes or changes are necessary to preclude any recurrence. *jb

 1) electronic throttle module (etm) shuts down the gas pedal where you have no control on acceleration 2) etm shutdown could cause a major accident 3) replace the etm at $1100 the owners should have been notified under warranty to clean the etm. *jb

We are having problems with our vehicle as identified in a newspaper article with our volvo. the dealer we purchased the vehicle from originally refused to correct the problem of the loss of power, stalling and other defects with my vehicle under warranty (they claims to have been advised by volvo that they could not fix the problem without a reduced performance light coming on) until i told them that if i was killed (the last time this happened, i lost power as i was entering i-95 north during rush hour and was nearly broadsided by a construction vehicle merging from the opposite direction) it would cost them a lot more than simply a repair. after threatening a lawsuit, they agreed to download some software to correct the problem. while the issue is not as prevalent as it was, we still have occasions when we get power surges, lose power and the electrical systems do not work properly in the vehicle. i do not feel safe driving this vehicle. the transmission/air flow problem is just one of many issues we have had with this vehicle - many of them safety related. we were told by the dealer that they were aware of the problem through a notice they received from volvo - a notice was the kind that notified the dealers of the problem were not required to advise customers unless customers complained (this was the same issue with an internal engine fan which apparently can catch fire without warning - the dealers got notice about that, but the customers did not - if we complained about issues with the fan, depending on the kind of fan it was, it would be fixed under warranty - otherwise, we would be responsible for replacing the fan at the cost of over $500 - our fan, after we complained that it came on for no reason while the vehicle was parked, was finally replaced last summer by the dealer but they had to get special permission from volvo to do it. apparently, these fans can come on and cause the engine to overheat, and there have been fires because of it. *jb

Cooling fan failed while driving on a very busy freeway. the car overheated suddenly, stopped running and had to be towed to dealer. the cooling fan was replaced by a volvo dealership. on a previous occasion in november 2001 while driving on a desolate mountain road at night the car stopped as though it was out of fuel. there was at least an 1/8 of a tank of fuel. there was a fuel line defect. the car had to be towed to a dealer two hours away and the defect was repaired. both incidents created a lot of inconvenience and could have caused a serious accident. *jb

I was recently told my 2001 v79xc needed ball joints, then sway bars and someone else said struts! also: i have had the car diagnosed, the system reported throttle module errors and electircal or circuit problems; throttle module cleaned, then replaced; headlights replaced 3 times (wiring causes shorts); gas filter replaced two junes in a row gas propelled out of the tank back at me upon pumping (something about air intake line was clogged), the brackets underneath the car are totally rusted not stainless steel! i had the cooling fan replaced, car overheated into the red! i too have had little time to enjoy my car. the e brake sticks in the winter, because the coating on the lines/cables is cracked, broken/burned due to improper suspension. my sun roof, interior lights and rear hatch door works intermittently in cold weather. the glove compartment was rattling loudly and the dealer i bought it from tried to fix it and told me i had to live with it! of course another dealership fixed it outright. the seatbelt frequently sticks and doesnt take up the slack intermittently only to get shut in the drivers door frequently, when i just about think it has corrected itself. and, there is a strange draft on the front passenger side window that gets quite cold in the winter. the seal seems fine and its another problem no shop seems to know anything about.

I have a 2001 volvo v70 cross country. 2 weeks ago it overheated. problem being - a defective cooling fan. according to the dealer, this part is on an indefinite national back order. thus, even now, i still have no idea when the part will arrive and when i will be able to use my car again. the dealer has also told me there are a number of cars in the lot with the same problem. i am not alone. given that this part is defective it seems to me that volvo should be running a national recall on this part. i suspect the reason that they are not, is because they do not have the part and are not sure what is wrong with it. this is no excuse. from an irate volvo owner (one of many right now) who bought this car to drive as opposed to sit in the dealers lot. *jb

The engine performed a shut-down/reduction in power procedure while accelerating in heavy traffic. performance reduced/engine system service urgent notice appeared on the information screen. i had to quickly move out of the way to prevent causing a major accident. after resetting the warning light, i proceeded driving to get to an appropriate location to wait for assistance. the engine shut-down again. *jb

I am an owner of a 2001 volvo xc70. it recently broke down in nyc with a decreased performance message shown on the computer as well as jerking and lag in all forward movement. the car was seen at martin's manhattan after being towed. they found nothing wrong when plugged into the computer. drove the car home from nyc to richmond va. during this time the car displayed a moderate lag during highway speeds when acceleration was needed(i.e. hills, passing). took the car into moors volvo to have them do what i thought would be a more detailed investigation. they also found nothing and said they upgraded the software. then, this morning dec. 24 2005 the car once again gave a reduced performance message, lagged, only moved forward with marked inhibition and would vibrate terribly when in neutral. if i can be of any assistance please feel free to contact me. *jb

My 2001 volvo v70 xc with 44,000 miles began racing and stalling when i came to a stop; dashboard message appeared indicating need for urgent engine system service. i immediately took it to service center where they had to replace the throttle body. service center indicated they have seen a rash of this problem. *jb

While driving my 2001 volvo v70 xc, the car stopped running and displayed the message - reduced performance mode. i got the car to the side of the road and turn off the engine. when i restarted it ran ok again. i took it to my volvo certified repair shop and they found in the recorded fault codes a bad electronic throttle body control unit (etc). they test drove the car and it stopped twice on the technician. once at highway speeds! i had it the unit replaced. this is a serious situation that needs investigated. two other cars at this shop had the same problem. volvo should be required to issue a recall and fix this serious defect. this is a safety issue as the car loses all power and the power assisted brakes and power steering become inoperable. this is under nhtsa action number pe05041. *nm

I began having trouble at about 22,500 miles in my new 2001 v70xc volvo. i noticed the car ran rough and shifted erratically and stalled. then i next had a significant experience with a sudden loss of power driving on the highway. i was out of town and was forced to have the car towed and obtain a rental car and accommodations. i had the car in and out of the shop with stalling problems as well as intake valve problems resulting in erratic shifting and rough running of this vehicle. it took several years and numerous trips to the dealership for repair. i recently had a very expensive repair done on the vehicle to resolve the problem. i submitted all my documentation to volvo customer service as well as the bills and expenses incurred with this problem. by the time the issue was resolved my new car warranty had expired ( how timely!) the volvo people were not willing to reimburse me for any of the repairs nor admit there was a problem with this model even though i had heard of other owners with similar problems. *jb

While driving with my 6 year old daughter at 70 mph on highway 58 in golden, co my 2001 volvo xc wagon suddenly lost power and i could only go 10 mph on july 20, 2005. i was able to exit and parked the car for an hour. it restarted and ran normally for about 5 minutes when i had a second sudden loss of power while driving 65 on 6th avenue in golden. the message center on my dash said service was urgent, so i stopped the car on the exit ramp for 1.5 hrs. until a tow truck arrived which towed the car to rickenbaugh volvo in denver for a cost of $142.50. the next day, i paid rickenbaugh volvo in denver $982.53 to replace the throttle unit and gasket, and remove, clean and replace the crank case ventilation nipple and $272.68 for emissions service. *jb

2001 volvo v70xc - failed etm. first occurred on 4/25/05, but the car restarted. when it recurred on 4/28, i brought it to the dealer for (warranty) service. the dealer blamed a clogged pcv system for the failure (rather expensive labor that was not covered by the extended warranty.) the problem is accurately described in nhtsa action number pe05041. i would like to add my incident report to this list. *nm

On several incidents over the past 9 months the car has stalled on the highway. it looses power and everything shuts down. once i stop it restarts. also, there are times when the car will not shut off completely but the engine will loose its power and then the rpm will rev back up suddenly. volvo has attached a black box to the engine and as a result replaced the transmission. the problem went away for about a month and it is back. the last incident was july 20th. *nm

 (1) my wife was driving about 25 mph on a sunny and mild day. (2) the vehicle, suddenly and without warning, lost its power steering. the message center read electrical failure, service required. consequently, my wife could hardly steer the vehicle. due to the low speed and straight road, my wife was able to stop the vehicle without incident. (3) the vehicle was towed to a dealership where a diagnosis is pending. the tow operator opened the hood to find the fead belt lying in the engine compartment. it was not broken, but had managed to slip off a pulley.

I have a 2001 volvo v70 xc wagon. the car was revving high for a while when shifting gears, i took it to the dealership, and they told me there wasn't a problem. about a month or so later the etm failed. i was being left stranded at freeway off ramps, and green lights when the car would suddenly die. it's a miracle i wasn't rear-ended! after a terrible experience trying to get the dealership to honor the etm warranty, (they only cleaned the etm they did not replace it-saying it wasn't bad enough!), a month has passed and now my transmission has failed! the dealership gave me a $5300 estimate for replacement as it is unrepairable! i took it to our regular mechanic, and he told me the transmission failure @ 70,000 miles happened because the etm wouldn't allow the torque converter do whatever it is a torque converter does, and that caused the oil to heat up and then the resulting transmission failure. he said there is no one around who will touch my transmission. i have to use a dealer to replace it. i am completely devastated and cannot afford to replace the transmission. the car is a lemon. it has almost caused me to be involved in accidents, and i'd really appreciate it if someone could contact me about what resources i have. you are welcome to test my car! i have read on the internet about others who are experiencing the same problems with their etms and then subsequent transmission failures. please help!*jb
