Volvo acknowledged a problem affecting some subject vehicles involving water seepage into the plenum box area in the engine compartment.when this occurs water may enter into the interior / passenger compartment and track along the wiring harness for the central electronic module (cem), the device that controls many of the vehicle's electrical functions including wiper operation, lighting, and transmission operation.if the water reaches the cem connector electrical faults may result.in response to such faults the cem, a microprocessor controlled device, will attempt to reset by temporarily shutting down (for 100 milliseconds, or 0.1 seconds) and restarting; this effects various cem functions including the instrument panel (ip) display, gauges, wipers and also the transmission gear (if it is in the overdrive range).during the reset owners may experience temporarily loss of the ip displays and an abnormal 'jerking' in the transmission/drivetrain.if the problem persist for 6 consecutive restart attempts, the cem will enter a 'limp home' mode that disables non-essential electrical functions yet maintain safety critical functions such as low-beam headlights, low-speed wiper operation, brake lights, and non-overdrive transmission operation.warning and error messages will also be illuminated in the ip display.consumers reported experiencing conditions consistent with cem resetting and the limp mode operation in their reports to both odi and volvo.no reports or allegations of crash or injury associated with possible cem failures have been reported by volvo or otherwise identified by odi.volvo revised the design of the wiring grommet (sealing device) and the plenum cover starting in may 2005 and october 2005 production dates respectively, the occurrence of the condition effectively ended after these changes.a technical service bulletin (tnn 37-35) has been published to diagnose and repair earlier production vehicles using the improved wiring grommet and/or new plenum cover.a safety-related defect has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist.the agency will monitor this issue and reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.

Front lights go off got a ticket for that reason and only thru that ticket did i know that the lights go off it happens once in a while and when so i have to go to side of the road and turn car off and turn on again, wont happen for a period and then surprise it happens again.we bought the car used and we dont know if there is any recalls it might not have been taken care of.

Today, we learned our volvo xc90's yaw rate sensor has failed. the root cause was water leaking into the passenger side of the car due to blocked moonroof (i.e. sunroof) drains, which shorted the yaw rate sensor. this impaired the electronic stability control and brakes of our volvo, putting us at risk of accident. research shows this is a frequent and recurring problem known since at least 2004. it has caused thousands of dollars in damage to numersous xc90s. volvo is aware of this issue up to and including the president of volvo usa. even though easy and inexpesnive regular maintenance would prevent expensive damanage, neither the volvo user manual nor maintenance service operations guides mention the need. the damage we and others have suffered was completely preventable. the root cause is a design defect, which volvo service providers regularly correct by cutting the bottom end of the hoses. a service provider is reported as saying, this is a bad design. we don't know why volvo designed it this way, so we jsut cut off the bottom two inches of the hoses. given the risk this defect puts owners at and volvo's ongoing failure to correct this design defect and/or notify owners of this issue and the required maintenance to address it, i believe a recall of all affected volvo xc90s is warranted and should be institued immediately. yours, jordan dea-mattson

While driving on the highway with my two small children, the car made a knocking noise and driver console/dash stopped working. the lights went out, and all gauges went to zero. i no longer had turn signals either. i feared for our lives. i have done research, and have found that others have this same issue with 2004 xc90s. *tr

While driving between 65 and 70 miles on a major interstate my 2004 volvo xc 90 has a severe thump in the front end, which is then followed by a very brief (split second) internal (meaning all dashboard lights, hi-fi, dome lights, radio air condition, oil gage, fuel gage clock ) power failure. while trying to push the gas the car would not accelerate. at first i hit something on the highway. a minute or two later the thump was harder and the lights internally completely went out, hazard lights could not be turned on, blinkers could not be switched on, hi-fi went out, the door locks would not work, the windshield wipers would not cut on or the electric windows. i pulled over immediately and turned the car off, waited 10 minutes and restarted it. there were 3 messages on the dash, the yellow exclamation point dashboard icon/alert lit up, a service message flashed referring to the anti-lock brake failure, the srs needed to be checked, and check engine. the next day i took it to a volvo dealership, they couldn't diagnose the problem. they assured me that the car was ok to drive. four days later the problem starts again. so after doing a little research i find out that this is a common occurrence on the volvo xc 90 and there was an investigation on this same issue in november 2010 in which volvo is fully aware of and acknowledges a problem affecting some subject vehicles involving water seepage into the plenum box area in the engine compartment. when this occurs water may enter into the interior passenger compartment and track along the wiring harness for the central electronic module, the device that controls many of the vehicles electrical functions including wiper operation, lighting, and transmission operation. if the water reaches the central electronic module connector electrical faults may result. this is a $1200.00 repair which volvo should pay. *tr

My wife and i were driving to a friend's how's when suddenly the radio started acting up ,it would go on and off . after we noticed that i slowed down a bit then all of a sudden my hole dash board went out . i tried pulling over but the transmission would not respond ,then the dashboard came back on but i had all these warnings like brake failure ,srs airbag service urgent , engine system service urgent . after all the happens the truck died ,luckily i was able to get off the road before other cars hit us .after a couple a minutes i tried turning it on and it came back on but i still had the warning lights on but the truck was running fine ,after we gotto our friends house i turned it off and left it their because i felt it wasn't safe to drive , the next morning i went over to pick up the truck , turned it on and all the lights were of and it ran fine . i looked itup online and it seems i'm not the only one who's had this problem ,it seems its happened a lot but volvo doesn't want to do anything about it . i like my volvo but i am also concerned about how safe it really is. *tr

At 65 mph wipers went on by themselves then followed by split second power failure, meaning dashboard light out, hazard lights could not be turned on,windows would not open,a/c out,in the message screen at that moment antilock brake failure was displayed before everything went out, driving another 20 miles till next exit at the dusk, after pulling over and restart ( to reset) srs failure in the message screen. car checked by volvo dealer and statement from them:fault in cem is shutting down network and causing dim to black out. replacement will run about $1500,this car had automatic transmission failure at 91822 miles and ignition failure recently, and many many other costly problems. *tr

The sunroof drain has a design flaw that can cause water to enter the passenger compartment and/or electrical systems. this can present simply as water on the floor boards. but it can also present in more subtle ways with water coming in contact with electrical systems and being drawn throughout the car through copper wires acting as conduit (this effects speaker quality, radio function, cruise control function etc). most importantly, water can accumulate in the compartment under the front passenger seat that houses the dynamic stability traction control system putting safety at risk. we have experienced this with our xc90 but see many complaints regarding other volvo models. this is a significant safety concern but most concerning because of its subtle nature, slow progression, and prohibitive costs to repair. many people are driving around with compromised systems and are not yet aware, unable to recognize the cause, or unable to fund the repair. *tr

All interior lights, guages, windshield wipers randomly shut down at freeway speeds and at idle. engine power is also affected as unable to accelerate properly. dealer replaced driver information module however problem continues. dealer unable to source the problem as the vehicle needs to be in the process of failing for them to source the problem. this has not been possible as the issue is random and typical goes away after the car sits for several hours. the service airbag and brake failure code remains in the driver information module. this is a serious safety issue especially at freeway speeds and at night. *tr

I was driving 65 mph on the i-95 when my windshield turned on by itself, then i got abs system failure alert advising me to pull over safely. next the dashboard died, windows didn't work and the power steering seemed to stop working. it was very scary. i got the vehicle to a dealership as luckily we were close to our destination. i turned off the ignition and explained the problem to the tech. he turned the car back on and it was like nothing had ever happened. the dashboard lit up fine and the windows worked fine. however, i did have a message stating i now had an airbag issue. they kept the car for 3 days trying to recreate what i had described and they could not figure it out. this incident happened about a year ago. it's happened no fewer than 8 times since then. i've taken it to other dealerships. i'm always charged a diagnostic fee and they can never figure out what's going on. it's very scary as there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason when the issue will occur. sometimes my windshield wiper goes on it's own and sometimes my stereo flicks on and off; then i get the abs system failure and dashboard goes dead. volvo really needs to figure this out before someone gets hurt. *tr

Starting in 2011 and 3 other occasions vehicle would not start. starter motor would not turn and system appeared to be dead. battery was tested to be in good condition. prior to these events electrical system behaved erratically with radio switching on and off, door locks not operating from remote key fob and windshield wipers erratically turning on and off. lights and systems seemingly behaving erratically. airbag warning lights came on. on first occasion system was reset and mechanic changed the starter motor. in hindsight i don't believe it was bad or caused of the problem. on second and third occasions after towing and repeated start attempts the engine started. note that when attempting starts nothing happened when the key was turned (engine starter would turn or engage. no clicking sound associated with bad battery), on fourth occasion in july 2012 volvo reported that central electronic module was bad and multiple fault codes were present. when informed that this was a seemingly a common problem on 2004/5 xc90 with this model due to leaking grommet they denied this and stated that this was not the case for this vehicle. module was changed at cost of $1,280. *tr

While driving on the highway my vehicle hiccuped intermittently three times and then the electronic panel, windows, locks, radio, a/c, signals, hazards all shut down and a message about the brakes came on. i was near the dealership so i stopped in and described the problem. with a smirk on his face the service consultant said it would cost $85.00 for diagnostics and then he would give me a cost estimate of the repair. they were busy and he said that he didn't think that they could get to it that day so i decided to take my chances and drive to my own mechanic. to my surprise when i started my car all power came back on and a message to get my air bag checked. when i arrived at my service station the mechanic put it on diagnostics (free) and couldn't find any error codes so he reset the car computer. everything was fine until july 12 when the same thing happened again. this time i was driving at night on the highway about 65mph, my wife with me, when we got quite a scare when the car hiccuped. we lost all power again but fortunately our headlights and rear lights stayed on. we drove slowly and arrived safely home. what a scare! our mechanic put it on diagnostics again, found nothing and reset the car computer again. he doesn't know what's causing the problem (probably a computer issue) and told me i should take it to a dealer. checking similar complaints on the internet this seems to be quite a problem with no fix. we fear for our safety driving the car and going any long distance. help! *tr

Driving on street and engine just died, no reason can think of, no engine light or message in text. happened again 2-3 weeks (yesterday) while slowing down for street accident, lost all power, had to stop car without power steering or brakes, put in park and started again. no problem afterwards and drove home. took to volvo dealer today where i regularly go and of course no reason found for two time failure. luckily not driving on freeway or may have been rear-ended due to engine failure. quite scared now to drive - when is it gonna happen again? 111,500 miles - has had new transmission 2 years ago and major service several months ago. service manager has no idea, recommended throttle cleaning for $400+ dollars and not even sure that is close to problem.

While driving on a 40mph busy road, my cd player display began to flash, then a few seconds later, my srs air bag service urgent message came on. everything continued to flash and then all my instruments (speedometer, rev counter, turn signals) all died. lucky i was passing my dealer who i just bought the car from and able to turn into it. after braking, i could not accelerate the car and had to let the momentum carry me into to the lot. i have had the car for 5 days now. i noticed on the first day that simple things were not quite right, including my mirror button only working half the time as well as my window control. also my wipers would turn on randomly. this seems to be a very common problem with this year and model car if you read any volvo forums. it seems it has happened to enough people that there should be a recall on the electronics of this car. people's safety are are great risk with the failure of these said item in the car.

Drove to the grocery store on saturday morning, car was fine. when i came out, i couldn't unlock the vehicle with the fob, i had to use the key to open the drivers door. then i tried to open the locks and was unsuccessful. the car did start, but had no dash info (nothing worked), ac, radio did not work either, front windows only worked, rear did not. i limped home because the car did not have any power. had it flatbedded to volvo dealer on monday, 6/4/12 and they still haven't determined what the problem is. had this same issue (only worse) in 2008 and they finally replaced (so they said) the computer. at the time of the 2008 incident, the vehicle only had approx. 33k miles. now in 2012, it has 53k! 20k additional miles and still issue still exists even with replaced computer!

While driving at highway speeds (typically on long trips of 4hrs or more) i hear a loud thumping noise that is very unnerving. it feels like the piston has left its bearings and is ramming into the car. this is followed by a sharp jerk then a momentary loss of engine power. at this point the dashboard goes blank, the headlights flicker and the windshield wipers turn on. this turn of events gets so scary that i pull off the road and wait for a few minutes. i am then able to turn the car on and keep driving. but once the issue has occurred it keeps occurring more and more frequently if i keep driving, about every 10 to 15 minutes. however if i let the car rest for a few hours or overnight i am able to drive the car fine. as a trend this problem is worsening. when i first experienced this problem in the summer of 2010 it only occurred once. i was able to resume my long road trip with no other incident. the next time it occurred was on the saw mill river parkway, a winding road from ny city to ct. it occurred at night and was far more scary than before. again i was able to resume my trip but this time the problem occurred twice before i reached home. the third time it happened was on the last leg of a long road trip from ct to florida. same symptoms but with more frequency. on all the occasions i was travelling with my family that included two small kids and on one occasion two elderly people too. not only has this cost me a lot of money by way of emergency car rentals and overnight stays (on the 3rd failure) but it has also put me and family at risk of serious accidents. i have had my car examined by 3 different volvo dealerships in 3 different states and none of them could figure out the root cause. i notice that many 2004/2005 volvo xc90s have the same problem and am surprised that you have not issued a safety recall.

While driving on the highway at night, all electrical indicators on dashboard including the turn signals stop working then the vehicle started slowing down. after stoping i was unable to open gas tank and tailgate where the battery is located. i took the vehicle to the volvo dealer and they were unable to duplicate the incident. now this has happen 7 more times. i am a single parent with minor children in my vehicle. please assist. someone inform me the problem might be with the central electrical module. i purchase this vehicle used and it is out of warranty. i have seen lots of complaints about this vehicle why is there not a recall on the central electrical module? please do something before there are fatialties.

As i was driving down a busy road, the dashboard gauges starting flickering on and off, and then the engine completely died out. as i was travelling at about 45 mph, i attempted to steer the car towards the right shoulder. the steering was very tight and difficult. as i moved right, the car behind me came around to pass because my car was slowing rapidly. as i started to move right, i could not correct my steering fast enough to avoid a collision. this is a very dangerous situation. when the dealer hooked the car to the computer, they could not diagnose a problem. it has now happened several more times with no explanation.

While driving the electronics shut off and the engine dies as if its in neutral. took to volvo service and they said a can software upgrade would solve it, this did not solve it, immediately after we left the same thing happened within a few miles, engine shut down, power went out, when restarted the srs airbag error code came on as well as the abs break failure message. i see you guys have completed an investigation (pe10025) on this but what the heck is being done about it. this car is very dangerous to my wife and newborn!!!! the car goes from 70 to 10mph on the freeway, how is this not as important as the issue with toyotas excessive acceleration problem, does someone need to die before you guys take this serious!

I was driving on the freeway and there was a slight thumping noise and the electircal systems failed and shutdown in a second. the power was lost and the vehicile came to a sudden halt. luckily i was on the right side of the road and i had pulled over to the side of the road. it was very scary, as i was on the freeway in the night and i could have very well been in an accident causing damage to my life and others. the electrical failure caused the car to loose complete control of the speed and the car came to an immediate halt. there was a message of break failure for a second before the car shut down completely. request you to please look into this concern as it is a potential safety hazard. i have researched over the internet and i read that most of the owners of 2004/2005 xc90 are facing similar issues, which is very scary. kindly help us and help save lives. thanking you.

I own a 2004 volvo xc90 t6 and it has been a disaster the last 4 years. one day i was driving on i90 (nyst) when my car whole dashboard out . it was a moment i cant forget . i couldnt do anything, i was driving 65 mph and can only force my car off the road because i have lost control of it . this is safety ?? not in my book. no one is going to do anything until someone gets hurt ? i know i am not the only complaining about this random shut down on the xc90's . volvo tells me they are unsure they fixed the problem ... how can you be unsure about a safety issue that puts my life on the line . i take it to the dealer (northtown of buffalo) . they fixed the problem . now 3 months later its happening again. everytime i get in this car i am unsure if its going to happen again. i need help and many more citizens out there encounter the same situation. this is not normal . thank you

An electrical failure in our 2004 xc90 occurred late at night while we were nearing the end of a 60 mile trip...and it almost killed me and my family. i was driving home at night after attending a fireworks show in san jose, ca and for some reason the engine stalled during de-celleration as i was changing lanes while exiting the freeway. i first noticed it when there was a loss of headlights, then no acceleration plus a loss of power steering/brakes. i was lucky to wrestle the car into a gas station right off of the exit as it was coasting to a stop. i turned the key off, then attempted to re-start the vehicle...and it re-started right away and everything worked fine...so i drove the last 6 miles home with no issue. i have read numerous complaints from 2004 xc90 owners and cannot believe there hasn't been a more aggressive recall action against volvo for this issue...or the transmission failure rate. this is ludicrous. i am thankful that it happened late at night while we were exiting the freeway: under other circumstances the loss of control of this vehicle could have had serious consequences. i am also thankful it was me driving when it happened...and not my wife. i doubt she could have steered this vehicle with no power to the steering or brakes.

I was driving my 2004 xc90 on the highway when suddenly all the lights in the dashboard went out. the car slowed down. everything electrical in the car stopped working. i could still start the car however. but acceleration wasnt the same, the car crawled. took the car to the volvo dealership who say this is a cem problem. a computer defect the car is barely 7 years old and this is apparently a problem with many other xc90 owners and a real safety issue. and to replace this cemchip is 1400 dollars. lease look into this matter

Was driving at highway speed when all electrical systems shut down. dash panel indicated brake failure, stop carefully. no lights, turn signals, speedometer, tachometer, airbags, hazard lights, pwr windows, pwr brakes, radio - no power to anything. clear, dry weather conditions. this had been happening for short cycles for approx. 2 months. windshield wipers would turn on for one cycle and all power would shut down to dash, radio, lights etc. but would last for only a second or two. this might happen 2-3 times on approx. 20 mile drive home on highway. this only happens at highway speed. but the incident on thursday 05.26.11 no power lasted for 10 miles until i got the vehicle home. had the car sit for an hour and then started again and the dash indicated srs system failure but all power was restored to car.

This is in regards to my volvo 2004 xc90. while driving my volvo starts jerking and then all of the electrical systems go out - all the interior dash light go off, signal lights, and hazards will not work. i get a message about brake failure and then srs airbag service. once you stop the car and restart it functions normally with just the srs message remaining.

I own a 2004 volvo xc-90. i have owned it since 12/2007. approximately 7 months ago i started having intermittment electricl problems (navigation failure, engine service alerts, security alarm system failure). messages would appear and then stop. recently while driving in the moutains a message appeared about a position light failure, then progressed to multiple ligth failures. this occurred at night on the blue ridge parkway which is poorly lit in many areas and has winding roads with steep drop offs. we had to drive with my passenger aiming a flashlight to see the road until we could turn off on an exit. there is no where on most of the parkway to pull off and we were at great risk without headlights. we checked fuses, and then started again and headlights worked, so drove on. later on the interstate they failed again and we had to pull off and park and get another ride home. volvo confirmed that the cem failure is a very common occurance with xc90s. they used to keep some of these on hand due to common need to replace. as with other owners, i now have a $1200+ repair to replace this. this should be a recall item - high rate of occurance and safety issue. why wait until someone is killed? it is only a matter of time till happens with cem failures..

During long durations(>4hrs) of driving my 2004 volco xc90, it seems to have electrical problems that have caused me and the passengers to be put into dangerous situations. for example, driving on a long trip with the cruise control enabled and trying to accelerate up a hill and suddenly the car will go into an engine protection mode and reduce power to the extent that i can't accelerate and have to pull over on the side of the road--(boost control module has been replaced and the engine control module has been replaced.) as long as i don't use the cruise control this will not occur. also, there was a software update in 2009. next, after trying to accelerate up a hill, there seems to be intermitent reduction in engine power, not allowing the car to accelerate. after trying to accelerate the check engine light has appeared and will not go off (waiting to have this problem diagnosed)...

Coming home to southern california from a trip in arizona and driving at night though the nevada desert. weather was nice, dry conditions, light traffic ( the sun had set about 7:00 in the evening) - january 2008 and we were cruising at about 65 mph. at about 50 miles outside banning the car had a power surge, and it felt as if we went over a bump on the road, there was a quick flicker in all lights and the navigation system reset. the recovery was almost immediate and did not think much of it. about half hour later it happened again. this time started to worry about the car as it was dark, had small kids in the car and we were in the middle of nowhere, desert for miles and miles. so, with no options we kept driving. about ten minutes later it happened again. this time there was no recovery. all lights, instrument panel, headlights, emergency lights, rear light all out. the car was pitch black. i believe only the fog lights were working but was worried about visibility on the road as we had no rear lights what so ever and the majority of the traffic at night on the i-10 is trucks. drove on shoulder for about 2 miles and took the next exit. small gas station only, no repair shop, no motel nothing; only a truck stop. after a small respite we stated up the car again and engine and all lights were again functional. i was terrified of driving the car home still over 100 miles away and no where near civilization, but since we had no other choice we did. no further incidents upon getting home. dealer had no idea what could have caused that, they update computer codes, and a control module. to this date they still do not know what could have caused that. we are very lucky to have not gotten into an accident or worse.

While driving at night after picking up soccer carpool, low beam head lights would intermittently go off, causing a message to appear of low beam bulb failure then after a 5 seconds would come back on and the message would disappear. this occured 4 or 5 times within a couple of minutes then never occured again during this trip. this is the second time in the past 2 weeks we have experienced this problem. fortunately both occurences occured during low speed driving in well lit areas.

My 2004 volvo xc90 sef has been experiencing intermittent engine failures/power shortages for the past several months. after driving for approximately 1 hour, often at highway speeds, the car will make a large sound and intermittently jerk, and simultaneously the gages go down, exterior lights go out, interior lights may go on, radio shuts off, wipers cycle once, air/heat goes off. this lasts approximately one second, however, at times the interior lights will not shut off until the car is restarted. once the problem begins, it happens intermittently (5+ times) until the car is shut off and not used for a period of time

My headlights, driving lights, park lights, and turn signals are not working. this began when i started to go somewhere last night. all of these things were working the day before. the tail lights, turn signals, and brake lights are working in the rear. my vehicle is garaged when it is not in use. my radio, cd player, or satellite radio would not operate 2 days ago and started working the next time i started my car. about 2 weeks ago the car wouldn't start. it acted like the security system had been activated as it would crank, but not start. i waited for about an hour and tried it again and it started the first time. i have checked all fuses. i am taking it to the repair shop today to see if they can figure out what is happening. these problems are intermittent and do not repeat often enough to diagnose properly. i can see this being very dangerous if i were driving at night and the headlights went out. i live in a rural area with a large deer population and it is hard enough to avoid them with the headlights working.

The vehicle is intermittently shutting off while driving on the private roads or freeway, all electrical equipment (dashboard, gauges, stereo, some windows, driving tranny changer - can't shift), and all other items are going out. the power of the vehicle will stall for 1/2 second in as many as 3-5 times during an episode. ultimately resulting in all electrical power failing. this appears to also be causing the batter to not be charged. the battery is new, purchased a few days ago to see if this would resolve the issue, which it didn't. thus the car cannot be started after a few days of driving without trickle-charging the battery. the srs baggage warning has not become engaged. i am the second owner of this vehicle, it doesn't appear through carfax or other records history that the previous owner had repaired these issues. this is very concerning, because this could cause an accident, leave me or my family stranded.

Tl-the contact owns a 2004 volvo xc90. while driving at approximately 45 mph the vehicle stopped accelerating. all of the lights and electrical components stopped functioning. the vehicle was pulled over and shut off for approximately 3 hours. upon restart the vehicle would drive as normal but all of the indicators lights on the dashboard were illuminating. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where he was unable to diagnose the failure and it was not repaired. the failure has recurred twice and the vehicle was taken back to an independent mechanic where was again unable to diagnose the failure. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 94,000 and the current mileage was 97,000. sm.

Our 2004 volvo xc90 has been experiencing intermittent power shortages for the past several months. after driving for approximately 1 hour, often at highway speeds, the car will intermittently jerk, and simultaneously the gages go down, exterior lights go out, interior lights may go on, radio shuts off, wipers cycle once, air/heat goes off. this lasts approximately one second, however, at times the interior lights will not shut off until the car is restarted. once the problem begins, it happens intermittently (5+ times) until the car is shut off and not used for a period of time (i.e. you reach your destination). we have had our volvo dealer look at it twice, and both times they were unable to diagnose the problem. today, after driving for approximately two hours, the car lost electrical function completely. we had no use of gauges, blinkers, hazard lights, radio, air conditioning, headlights and brake lights. windshield wipers had power and were moving while on the automatic setting, without any rain to automate them. an abs error light came on but we were able to use the brake and gas pedal. we were driving approximately 65 mph on a highway and were luckily able to exit without having the use of blinkers or brake lights. when we turned the car off and back on, we resumed power, but had an srs warning light appear. after doing research on volvo-forums.com and aboutautomobile.com, we have discovered this to be an issue many (50+) 2004 xc90 drivers have experienced. we feel very lucky that this happened during the day, because the situation could have been much more dangerous on a 4-lane highway in the dark. we do not feel safe driving this car and will be taking it to our volvo dealer tomorrow morning and demanding a response to the problem. from what we have read from others, it appears to need a new cem. given the number of identical complaints on identical models, it seems to be a defect with the cem.

My wife was driving our 2004 volvo xc90 back from vacation with our two children in the vehicle and all the dash instrumentation lost power and the steering became heavy. this was during the day so i do not know if the head lights went out as well.the car did not stop and the power came back on. this occur a second time during this trip which was about 3 & 1/2 hours in duration.

I have a 2004 xc90. i have been having electrical failure problems with my car where the car just stalls while driving at speeds of 50mph randomly for the past three years and have brought the car into the calabasas dealer numerous times and also to an independant auto mechanic and no one is able to duplicate the stall of the electical system and therefore noone is able to diagnose the solution to the hazard that occurs when the car stalls and therefore no one is able to fix the problem. the dealer assures me that it is not a safety issue, just a nuisance. i researched and found that there are 100s of complaints of similar issues for this car. today this same issue happened at much lower speeds two times within five minutes. i request that this issue be researched and the manufcturer fix the problem.

In march 2010, 04 xc90 lost power while driving on highway at about 65mph. dashboard lights, radio all cut off, car lunged forward, and in 1-2 seconds dashboard lights and radio power on again. took to volvo dealership, they couldn't duplicate the issue but diagnostics said they needed to replace the steering column module which should fix problem. this didn't fix the problem because car did the same thing (lose power, lunge forward) around same speed 2 months later. dealer could not duplicate, returned car to me. a week later, jun 3, car won't start at all, towed to volvo dealership. this time they say the cem (central electronic module) needs to be replaced and that should solve it. they replaced cem, so far car runs fine. there have been too many complaints about this and volvo is not take ownership of this problem.

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 volvo xc90. the contact stated while driving at speeds of 50 mph the vehicle would stall and the electrical system would malfunction. this would cause the power windows and interior lights to become inoperable. the dealer could not duplicate the failures. the contact stated that he was able to locate several complaints pertaining to the failure and did not feel safe in the vehicle. he also stated that the failure contributed to a defective computer and should be the manufacturers liability. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 97,000.

My 2004 volvo xc90 has experience a sudden electrical failure. while driving in city conditions all internal electronics including speed & fuel gauges, turn light indicators, audio system, air circulation and supplemental restraint system have turned off while the engine continued to operate. this made the car impossible to drive as no feedback on speed or ability to indicate a turn or a stop was possible. this occurred suddenly and without any warning. i was unable to fix this by restarting the car. according to basic research, this is a common issue with volvo cars made circa 2003-4 and involve a defective cem (car electronics module). in other incidents engines have also shut down unexpectedly and brakes became inoperable. this is a serious safety issue that needs to be addressed. *tr

Electrical issue resulting in supposed brake failure and srs failure. this is without a doubt a safety issue that volvo cars of america needs to address. the warning lights come on intermittently possibly due to a weak battery and/or faulty computer. other operating components go on and off (e.g. speedometer, tachometer, turn signals). *tr

On a road trip one night, my car lost all electrical power on the dash. i cannot read any gauges, turn on blinkers or emergency flasher. windows and radio, a/c is disabled. after arriving, i restarted the car and has an srs failure message. i read that this happens to many xc90 owners and the dealers/manufacture cannot confidently fix the problem. they think it's a central electrical module (cem) failure. i think it's a great safety issue when traveling on a darkened highway. i'm replacing the cem unit at the cost of more than $1000 for parts and labor. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 volvo xc90. while driving on the highway in rainy conditions, the electrical system shut down for a few seconds. the lights, radio, windshield wipers, and steering also shut off. the failure continued to occur intermittently within minutes until the vehicle was completely turned off and restarted. he only noticed the failure while he was driving on the highway. the dealer made several attempts to diagnose the failure and was unable to find the cause. it was suggested that he replace the computer and software system. he replaced the software (upgrade) but the failure continued to occur. the manufacturer was not informed of the failure. the current mileage was approximately 106,000. the failure mileage was approximately 70,000. updated 01/06/10 *bf updated 01/07/10.*jb

I was wondering if there has been a recall for 2004 xc-90's because of there extremely dangerous electrical failure. this past weekend after about 3 hours of highway driving the whole dashboard and navigation flickered and restarted. it did they 3 or 4 times until it did a similar thing where the entire dashboard and navigation shut down. the abs light came on and it told me there was break failure and to pull over slowly. i had no blinkers or hazard lights and the headlights even went off. this is extremely hazardous. i pulled over and turned the car off. turning it back on it drove ok for a few minutes until it flickered again. i finally made it to my destination and took it to a volvo dealership who could not figure it out. they charged $160 to try and figure it out but they just ended up upgrading the software. on my trip back down to nyc, the same thing began happening after about 3 hours of driving. it flickered a few times and again went completely dark telling me to pull over on the freeway. after pulling over the airbag message comes on. i have read various places online of this happening to other people so this is not a rare condition. this seems like a very dangerous situation which volvo should really take care of. asking customers to pay $1200 to replace a cem when it really should be a recall is a little ridiculous. *tr

Occasional power failure, likely due to heat. a problem with the cem due to heat soak on a long drive - 2004 volvo xc 90 has a split-second severe thump in the front end due to the power loss, which is then followed by a very brief (split second) internal (meaning dashboard lights, hi-fi, dome lights, etc) power failure. power then returns and the car continues to drive - however, this is clearly a safety issue when driving on the freeway. seems to be a design issue - symptoms as per here: http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=16351 frustratingly, volvo do not recognize this as a problem with the vehicles and there is no outstanding tsb/recall for this item. i have discussed at length with both the dealer and volvo na and neither will admit that there is a problem with the cem design. as far as i can tell, it is susceptible to heat failure - however, even paying $1,000+ to have it replaced does not seem to guarantee any improvement as the part design has not changed since 2003. volvo customer care contact details are: email: customercare@volvoforlife.com contact: lisa telephone: 800-458-1552 x1953 *tr

When working on the audio/cd/radio of the car, this generates an srs service urgent message to be displayed on the dash. this appears to be a common problem with volvos if you check the message boards. people should be able to work/change out their stereos without the fear of the airbags working after words. *tr

While driving in heavy traffic on april 25, 2009, my 2004 volvo xc90 began jerking and then there was a sudden loss of power, the instrument panel swooped to the far right and then back to left with no other movement, the radio shut off, the windshield wipers began wiping, and the door locks and windows would not work. shortly thereafter, the message box displayed brake failure-stop safely, and then changed to srs airbag _service urgent. once we stopped, the vehicle would not start again. i disconnected the battery in hopes of resetting the computer. once this was done the car started again. messages are still displayed. we contacted volvo corporate and have an appointment with a local dealership tomorrow. this is a serious safety issue and it is not the first time i have submitted a complaint for this same type problem. i have been a faithful, repeat volvo customer, and would like to continue to support volvo. my loyalty is slowly fading, especially after reading several complaints of the same nature. volvo please don't let a death occur before you take action. *tr

On march 22, 2009 i was traveling with my two daughters east on i-75 from naples to miami when the car suddenly jerked and the dashboard and instruments flickered and lit up, and then the instrument panel displayed the message srs - airbag service urgent. was able to continue driving to look for a rest area as that stretch of i-75 is in the everglades. after a few miles the car jerked again, but this time all the dashboard lights, instruments (speedometer, rpm), radio and interior lights did not work. was able to continue driving to a rest area about 7 miles down the highway. i stopped, turned off the car for 15 minutes then it started up again with all the electrical systems working, but still displaying the message srs - airbag service urgent. not wanting to b stuck in the everglades i continued driving, and the jerking motion and issue with electrical occurred again two more times. the last time was when i was pulling off the highway onto my exit for home it displayed the message brake failure! stop safely. i was able to stop, turned off car, started it again with everything working, but still displaying the message srs - airbag service urgent. this same issue happened last summer when my wife was driving with our kids from miami to jacksonville. she took it to a volvo dealer in daytona beach and one in jacksonville. both dealers were not able to diagnose the issue. when back in miami, i took it to an independent mechanic who is volvo-certified and he was not able to fix the issue either. based on what i've researched it seems to be an issue with the onboard computer. this is a very scary problem that needs to be addressed by volvo, especially when you are driving 70 miles an hour on the highway and the car suddenly jerks and loses power. *tr

On october 18 at approximately 8pm we were traveling west bound on i-4 when we experienced a severe jerk of the vehicle and the interior seatbelts lights lit up. we continued to drive and experienced the same thing a few miles later. we decided to exit and then there was another jerk of the vehicle and we lost all interior electrical, no dash lights, no a/c, no windows, nothing! we limped to a parking lot and called road side assistance to have the vehicle towed. this is a serious issue with this vehicle and i have found multiple instances of the same on your website! volvo needs to recall the vehicle and make the repairs before someone is killed! volvo can't seem to replicate the problem and the computer in the car did not register an event! seems like the computer is the problem, but they won't own up to the fact that it's a volvo problem! *tr

While driving on i-10 at night at approximately 75mph with my family, we experience complete failure of the vehicle's electronics such as loss of braking, steering, odometer, speedometer, all instruments, and transmission. we had a total loss of every electrical function of the vehicle at the most dangerous point and time of our travel - at night, on an interstate, and far from major cities. after much stress and fear, we limped to our destination barely. in short, we had the car towed to a volvo dealer. the dealership stated that the c.e.m. (one of few brains of the vehicle failed) needed to be replaced, and of course we did. i know for a fact that c.e.m failures are an common problem with this type of vehicle. two dealerships have told me that they have dealt with this issue recently. this is a major issue. our lives were at risk given our circumstance. i cannot imagine what others have experienced. a fire, property damage, crash, and report to police should not in this case be the genesis of a recall. the simple facts of our near grave experience should be sufficient to have a recall. *tr

On june 15, 2007, while on a highway traveling 65 mph, my 2004 volvo xc90 made a jerk, as if it had suddenly fallen out of gear. about 5 minutes later, the same thing happened. it felt as if something locked the tires for an instant, then let go. about another 5 minutes later, we received an error message that said brake failure, stop safely. moments later, we lost all control of the car - total electronic shutdown. no lights, no hazards, no power steering, no brakes. my husband was able to glide to the breakdown lane, and we rolled until the car stopped. we had our two young children in the car, on the side of the highway, in the dark. it was a terrifying predicament, and we couldn't leave the car due to the danger of not being seen. we had the car towed, and a few days later, the volvo dealer said it was a $60 software upgrade that needed to be done. after the car was returned to us, we took it to another volvo dealer and had them perform a 45k check-up, had them reevaluate the situation, and also had a va state inspection done, and they told us everything was fine. just barely 3 months later, in exactly the same scenario, the same exact thing happened. on 9/21/07, we were on a highway at night, and once again felt the car jerking, followed a few minutes later by total electronic failure. no lights, no hazards, nothing. once again, we managed to get off the highway safely, but i fear the next time this happens, we may not get so lucky. all 3 dealers that have looked at this car have never heard of this problem before, which is very unsettling, as i can never be convinced it is fixed. i am terrified to ever drive my car again, even if they do fix it. the car is currently still being evaluated, so we do not know the latest prognosis for it. *tr

My 2004 xc90 awd began experiencing odd electrical problems this spring at about 45000 miles. while driving at cruising speed, the vehicle would suddenly and without warning experience a hard jerk followed by activation of the windshield wipers and loss of power to the radio. first time, the dealer could not replicate the problem but downloaded electrical software updates. same thing second time and back to dealer, again could not replicate, and they downloaded transmission updates focusing more on the jerking issue. third time it happened, i continued to drive the car to the dealer so they could see what i was experiencing. on the way there, i had complete loss of electrical power: no power to speedometer, to gas gauge, to windows, to air conditioning, radio, etc. also had less than full power to drive with. the dealer again downloaded electrical software updates and gave me the vehicle back. same problem for 4th time this friday and they tell me they have put new computer into car. fortunately there have not been any deaths or crashes, but this defect causes a serious safety problem without any warning. *jb

I parked my vehicle in my driveway on the evening of friday, august 12, 2005. i left on vacation the following morning leaving my vehicle in the driveway. i returned from vacation late on the evening of august 21, 2005. the following morning when i went out to leave for work, the vehicle would not start. i called aaa in order to have the car jumped. it would not jump. i then called the volvo dealership and they told me to call the volvo hot line for a tow. the vehicle was towed to the gengras volvo dealership in east hartford, ct on the morning of august 22, 2005 and it remains there at this time. the dealership service department reports that all of the computers are malfunctioning. they report this to be an act of god as in the car was struck by lightening. i was advised to report this to my insurance company which i did. an appraiser was dispatched to look at the vehicle and then special engineers from north eastern technical services. inc in fall river, ma went to the volvo dealership to view the vehicle. they removed two computer modules with permission of the service department and microscopically examined them to determine if any connectors, circuit board or component damage was present. neither module showed any indicators of damage. at this point the claim has been denied by my insurance company saying that the problem is a warranty problem. volvo disputes this saying it is an act of god. the vehicle is less than two years old and has less than 24,000 miles on it. i have not been able to drive the vehicle since august 12, 2005. it does qualify for the lemon law, but more importantly, i found that there have been other reported electrical system failures of this model. i am concerned that this is indeed a problem with this particular model and the volvo is trying to cover it up. *jb

Since i have owned this car i have had small electrical problems - moonroof won't open or close, g door opener not working after 3 days, must press unlock button several times to unlock doors. also, the car bounces at all speeds, and shifts late. labor day, 2004, i was driving the car when all gages went out - speed od, gas, oil press, entire abs system, etc. i found it was fuse 24 and replaced it. this fuse blew 4 more times over the next 3 days - once it blew when replacing it. the dealership said this was not a safety issue and scheduled repair for 2 weeks later. (the abs system still reported warnings on the message display). once the dealership finally worked on it, they replaced the central electrical box and ordered a new transmission which still needs to be installed. i still have the above electrical problems along with the other problems which the dealership claims are all related. there is 10,000 miles on this car. previously, i owned a 1999 xc. i continued to have electrical problems with this car until i started it at a daycare to have the battery explode. solution to this problem was to upgrade me to the 2004 with the assurance the problems i had on the 1999 were highly unusual and unheard of. due to my past experience, and the very similar problems i am having with the 2004, i feel very unsafe in this vehicle. *ak

On august, 26, 2004 there was a major malfunction in our volvo xc90 (2004). while driving with 2 small children in car seats and 2 adults on a major highway; suddendly, there was no acceleration in the gas pedal and the stearing wheel did not function. we managed to slowly move to the side of the road from what momentum was left in the car, and avoid an accident. we were obviously very shaken up, and find this car completely unsafe. it has been 3 weeks now getting the run around with the cherry hill, new jersey volvo dealer. they said there's nothing wrong with the car. the car is unsafe for our family, and presents a danger for others on the road. we are afraid it will stop dead again on a major highway with death or injuries occuring to either ourselves or others. the dealer asked us what we wanted we finally said, (after they said they'd get us a new suv and did not) that we want our money back ($3,000 deposit) and we don't want this car they sold us. today, they made us take this car back and they are refusing our request to refund our money. also, the car was towed on a flat bed truck in to the dealer on july 13th, 2004 as the car did not start.. relays were loose in the icm and cem etc., [we have the service order] on this day, the message on the car said something to the effect urgent malfunction in suv air bags... and we unloaded the family and it was towed to the volvo dealership. and the car's 2 side mirrors work one day and not the next. tomorrow i take matthew to his first day at pre-school, and i'm half thinking what if something happens to the car when we're driving. it's amazing to me that volvo can let me leave their parking lot with this car this evening, and the aren't taking safety seriously at all. so, at 11:00 pm i am up letting the nhtsa know what's going on. we are willing to help in anyway we can. sincerely, the lawrence family.*ak

We leased our volvo xc90-t almost exactly 1 year ago to date from south county volvo. less than 3 months later, the car wouldn't start. they said that my wife must have left a light on; the battery was recharged and we took the car back. 2 months later, the car again would not start; again it was towed-back to the dealership. this time, they said the battery was bad. the third time they said there was bad switch which controls the lights and that was changed. on the fourth occasion, which incidentally occurred excatly one year later on july 7th, 2005, they (again) said we must have left a light on...no one can be that dumb, not even me!. i am fast losing my confidence in volvo!

Unsafe front suspension repaired 4 times by volvo involving district factory technical supervisor and technicians on 3 of four occasions and the vehicle still has serious safety and handling concerns - no one in the family will drive the car. it has also had serious performance related safety issues regarding vehicle electronics virtually shutting the vehicle down in the middle of an interstate. anti skid problems on multiple occasions. drivers seat belt anchor was improperly attached and would not have held in an accident. the steering wheel came dangerously loose while driving and the dealership stated that it had never been properly affixed. (i have owned 300 cars in my life and never has a steering wheel come loose)! tires were abnormally badly and quickly due to significant suspension problems and were not warranty by the manufacture.. electrical problems caused several fuses to blow in the dark effectively turning all rear marker and tail lights off. it was necessary to drive with the hazard lights on to avoid being hit by another driver. *tr
