Today, we learned our volvo xc90's yaw rate sensor has failed. the root cause was water leaking into the passenger side of the car due to blocked moonroof (i.e. sunroof) drains, which shorted the yaw rate sensor. this impaired the electronic stability control and brakes of our volvo, putting us at risk of accident. research shows this is a frequent and recurring problem known since at least 2004. it has caused thousands of dollars in damage to numersous xc90s. volvo is aware of this issue up to and including the president of volvo usa. even though easy and inexpesnive regular maintenance would prevent expensive damanage, neither the volvo user manual nor maintenance service operations guides mention the need. the damage we and others have suffered was completely preventable. the root cause is a design defect, which volvo service providers regularly correct by cutting the bottom end of the hoses. a service provider is reported as saying, this is a bad design. we don't know why volvo designed it this way, so we jsut cut off the bottom two inches of the hoses. given the risk this defect puts owners at and volvo's ongoing failure to correct this design defect and/or notify owners of this issue and the required maintenance to address it, i believe a recall of all affected volvo xc90s is warranted and should be institued immediately. yours, jordan dea-mattson

My wife and i were driving to a friend's how's when suddenly the radio started acting up ,it would go on and off . after we noticed that i slowed down a bit then all of a sudden my hole dash board went out . i tried pulling over but the transmission would not respond ,then the dashboard came back on but i had all these warnings like brake failure ,srs airbag service urgent , engine system service urgent . after all the happens the truck died ,luckily i was able to get off the road before other cars hit us .after a couple a minutes i tried turning it on and it came back on but i still had the warning lights on but the truck was running fine ,after we gotto our friends house i turned it off and left it their because i felt it wasn't safe to drive , the next morning i went over to pick up the truck , turned it on and all the lights were of and it ran fine . i looked itup online and it seems i'm not the only one who's had this problem ,it seems its happened a lot but volvo doesn't want to do anything about it . i like my volvo but i am also concerned about how safe it really is. *tr

While driving in heavy traffic on april 25, 2009, my 2004 volvo xc90 began jerking and then there was a sudden loss of power, the instrument panel swooped to the far right and then back to left with no other movement, the radio shut off, the windshield wipers began wiping, and the door locks and windows would not work. shortly thereafter, the message box displayed brake failure-stop safely, and then changed to srs airbag _service urgent. once we stopped, the vehicle would not start again. i disconnected the battery in hopes of resetting the computer. once this was done the car started again. messages are still displayed. we contacted volvo corporate and have an appointment with a local dealership tomorrow. this is a serious safety issue and it is not the first time i have submitted a complaint for this same type problem. i have been a faithful, repeat volvo customer, and would like to continue to support volvo. my loyalty is slowly fading, especially after reading several complaints of the same nature. volvo please don't let a death occur before you take action. *tr

Brakes on the vehicle fail intermittently, especially at low speeds (like backing out of a parking spot. when the pedal is pushed it feels like a rock, with little depression, and vehicle does not slow. if pressure is released and pedal is pushed a second time, usually the braking will finally work. a repair shop replicated this when pulling the vehicle out of a bay to test drive and they lost braking and nearly hit a wall. breaking at high speeds (60mph+) often results in a strong pull to the left, as if the left brake is braking more than the right side.

Driving on 210-west, my car lost power without warning. the fuel pump had been replaced on jan. 26, 2010, to correct the strong smell of gasoline inside and outside of the car. other problems have been replacing the brake pads twice, replacing the abs, faulty gps and cd player, front passenger door automatic lock needs motor replaced, sloshing sound of water heard inside the car after rain. *tr

I am experiencing continuing safety problems with my volvo xc90. this vehicles all wheel drive (awd) system is malfunctioning without warning and at random times. this results in unpredictable and erratic vehicle handling which creates serious safety issues to the vehicles driver and occupants. this has been occurring for at least one year and was confirmed and documented by a volvo dealer during the summer of 2005. i must point out this safety problem involves an active system that cannot be controlled, adjusted or disabled by the vehicles driver. this safety problem caused an accident during the winter of 2005. at that time, the all wheel drive system failed suddenly and without warning on a snow covered road. this caused sudden and uncontrolled front wheel spin which led to a loss of vehicle control and with the vehicle sliding off a road. a tow truck was required to move the vehicle back on the road. the volvo dealer that confirmed the problem has made several failed attempts to repair it. they have documented communication problems within the vehicles high speed network and reloaded vehicle software. they have also replaced: 1) the vehicles front wheel sensors, 2) the mfi module used for vehicle diagnostics, 3) the bcm module used by the awd system, and 4) the awd aoc unit with clutch and transmission. none of this has resolved the safety problems i am experiencing from this vehicle. this volvo dealer has told me the problem cannot be repaired because: 1) the vehicles diagnostic system does not report any diagnostic codes, 2) their own technicians cannot diagnose the problem, and 3) volvo technicians cannot determine the problem. my requests to volvo cars of north america have been ignored or rejected, even by volvo consumer affairs and volvo regional managers. i am left to driving a vehicle with obvious safety problems that cannot be diagnosed or repaired by anyone. *nm
