Defect SummaryWinnebago is recalling 1,547 model year 2001-2003 recreational vehicles equipped with norcold model 1200lrim refrigerators, manufactured from march 1, 2001 to december 31, 2002, with serial numbers between 1273701 and 1536607, non-consecutively. a fatigue failure in the section of the cooling unit which contains the refrigerant could allow the liquid solution to slowly leak. if a leak occurs and the refrigerator continues to be operated after solution circulation has ceased the heat source could generate very high temperatures. at such high temperatures, the cooling unit could rupture.
Consequence SummaryIf a leak occurs and the unit is continues to operate, hydrogen gas may be expelled and can be ignited, resulting in a fire, possibly causing serious injury or death.
Corrective SummaryWinnebago is working with norcold and norcold will notify owners and the vehicle's refrigerator will be repaired free of charge (please see 09e-027). owners may contact norcold's recall center at 1-800-767-9101.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
06/17/20046800112/18/2002
While driving 50 mph the engine stopped running and all electrical power ceased. brake lights and hazard warning lights were rendered inoperative. we could not get entirely off the road so not having hazard warning lights was very dangerous for oncoming traffic as well as us. there was a strong smell of electrical wire burning but no further fire was found. neither the chassis or coach manufacture take responsibility for not having a fail safe system for brake lights and hazard warning lights not being opperational. *ak

Dt: the contact owns a 2002 winnebago brave that is on a work horse chassis. after driving the vehicle approximately 2 hours he stopped at a rest area about 110 miles from his home. when he tried to restart the vehicle it would not start and nothing would operate. there was no power going through the ignition switch to start the engine. there were no warning indicator sounds nor was there power to the dashboard instruments. after further evaluation a mechanic determined that the ignition switch and the connectors to the switch had melted. upon trying to locate an ignition switch the mechanic contacted the dealer. the service dealer stated that there was a kit available to remedy this problem. the contact has tried to contact the manufacturer, but no one has returned his calls. *ak

The 2002 winnwbag brave model 34d experienced a failure of the front attachment bracket to the liquid propane tank. the approximately 1/4 thick by 10high bracket cracked completely and left the tank suspended by only two bolts at the rear that appeared to have been intended to stabilize the tank ,but not support the weight as they were attached to only two small tabs. this problem was discovered during maintenance to replace two of the failed stabilizer hydraulic jacks. if it had not been for this work being done i was certain one of the remaining supports would have broken while traveling and we would have been driving down the road with a pressurized tank dragging on the pavement. the thought of having this happen and the danger to all around was frightening. a call to winnebago factory service, which had a response of this was not anything we were aware off, haven't heard of it before. i stated i could email photos for their use, but they were not interested. this was a very serious problem, and owners of these motor homes should be advised to have this checked and repaired immediately. *ak

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC

Tl-the contact owns a 2002 winnebago brave motor home. while driving 10 mph coming to a stop light as he depresses the brake pedal they went all the way to the floor unabling the vehicle to stop. he kept pumping the brakes five to six times before the vehicle would stop. he pulls to the side of the road check the master cylinder and notice the brake fluid boiling. he then looked under the vehicle and notice the brakes was locked tapped on them so they could unlock. he then drove the vehicle home and back to a workhorse dealer who serviced the front brakes and then replaced the rear brakes. (unknown of what was done). the front brakes failed again and after taken the vehicle back to workhorse they replaced the caliper on the front and rear brake but not the rotors and the pads. the recall only call for the caliper to be repaired but it caused other problems with the pads and the rotors. the dealer informed him he has to pay $1,400 for the rotors and pads. the manufacturer was not notified. the failure mileage was 52,000....mw

This concerns safety recall 50901-c on workhorse custom chassis with bosch brakes. this is the second recall for problems with the bosch brakes which was not corrected the first time. the brake calipers and pads and rotors were replaced at 40000 miles. this time i experienced brake loss in october of 2009 so i called the workhorse number today to get and idea of when the brakes would be replaced (again) and a young lady proceeded to lecture me on what they were not going to do and all the disclaimers. we are preparing to travel in april 2010 for the summer. how many times do they get a chance to get it right and place all the burden on the consumer?*tr

I have a 2002 winnebago brave model 34d motorhome and experienced a problem with the mounting of the propane tank. while on a trip i went to shut off the propane tank valve and discovered that the tank was moving. upon investigation i discovered that the mounting plate that the tank is bolted to had completely fractured and the tank was being held up by the rear only. this is a 28 gallon propane tank that is used for cooking, heating and hot water and is mounted at the bottom of the motorhome. the results of this tank ripping off while driving down the road at 60 mph is frighting to say the least. i did some research on r.v. site and discovered that other people have had similar problems. a welding shop patched it up but i think that winnebago needs to address a permainent fix for all owners.
