ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - BATTERY

The battery is leaking acid. the acid is running out from the battery try and dripping on to the rear shock, swing arm, and chain. i would like to see something done to fix/replace the damaged and malfunctioning parts. this is a problem that a large number of people are having with this bike. something needs to be done to correct it.*ak

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING - ENGINE - GASOLINE
03/25/19993003/01/1999
I ride the motorcycle until the engine has reached normal operating temperature and then park it and shut off the engine. after a few minutes when i push the starter button gasoline pours from the carburetor onto the hot engine. this continues until i release the starter button. the engine will not start while the gasoline is spilling onto the engine. after letting the motorcycle cool for a few minutes, sometimes it will then start or the gasoline will again pour onto the hot engine. yamaha motor company has acknowledged the this is a problem on this model of motorcycle when ridden in high altitude situations. i have had the problem in colorado, pheonix az, edmonton ab canada, and north carolina. the dealership, under direction from yamaha, has replaced the carburetor and fuel pump. this has not fixed the problem as it reoccured on 02/27/2000. i will continue to work with the dealership and yamaha to get this problem resolved.

Motorcycle began backfiring at about 2000 miles. shawnee cycle sales, which was not the selling dealer, said the carbs had been adjusted previously (apparently by the selling dealer at the 600 mile service. they then attempte a fix, it didn't work and 2 weeks later i took it back. this was the 2nd attempt by shawnee, plus the one adjustment at 600 miles, for a total of 3 adjustments. the motorcycle continue s to backfire. the manufacturer is no help, all they say is take it back to the dealer, the dealer won't even look at it for 6-8 weeks. the mfr claims they have never heard of this, yet many owners have made the same claim. this motorcycle has a 5 year warranty, and they are not standing behind it.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING - EXHAUST SYSTEM - EMISSION CONTROL - CATALYTIC CONVERTOR
05/14/1999205/01/1999
This motorcycle has a severe problem tat has gone unrepaired by the manufacturer for 2 years now. the first problem is severe backfiring upon decelleration. not a typical pop but a loud boom that will actually startle the rider and passenger. only known solution is to diable the ais system which is part of the federal emissions system. most current problem is sever exhaust or raw gas fumes which are making the rider and passenger very sick. yamaha attempted 4 times and for 19 days to correct the problem but upon being unable to do so, now claim it is normal. this is a dangerous situation which makes using the vehicle dangerous and therefore not possible.

POWER TRAIN - CLUTCH ASSEMBLY
05/19/199903/25/1999
While switching into second gear motorcycle jumped forward and the owner applied brakes, but motorcycle did not stop. owner had to drive up onto a hill in order to make motorcycle stop. dealer has seen the vehicle and can find no problem. consumer thinks that the vehicle is has poor design because the rear brake arm is located over top of the right heel peg instead of under, this results in a tendency to press the brake arem rather than the brake pedal. *ak
