Defect SummaryCertain yokohama replacement tires, size 205/50r16 a680 87v, manufactured between september 1, 2007 and november 28, 2009, fail to conform to the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 139, new pneumatic radial tires for light vehicles. the molded markings on one sidewall do not contain the complete tire identification number (tin) or partial (tin) as required.
Consequence SummaryThe lack of a tin on both sides of the tire could make it more difficult for consumers to identify these tires if, in the future, a safety-related performance issue were to be discovered. as a consequence, there is a risk that the tires would not be removed from service, which, in turn, could increase the risk of a vehicle crash.
Corrective SummaryThe safety recallbegan on april 24, 2012. owners may contact yokohama campaign service center at 1-888-801-4162.
NotesOwners may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to http://www.safercar.gov .

I purchased tires from manteca tires in may of 2010. the tires were yokohama prada tires for a total of 359.80. i had the tires balanced, aligned and rotated at regular intervals. the tires from day one were making extreme noise and i had notified manteca tires that the tires were causing noise. they suggested to rotate them and use them for a while to see if the tires continued to make noise. i did so and then also took them in later to be rotated again and had them check the noise. they stated that i should let some more time go on them and continue to drive to see if again the noise would go away. it did not and the noise was getting worse. i did not feel that these were safe. they said i should contact yokahama, which i did. they told me to take it to a local tire company and get it checked out. yokahama was claiming that the tires are not covered under warranty because they stated there was some cupping. i told them how can that be, when i never had this road noise with my last tires and i had these tires rotated, aligned and balanced. they said they would offer a 25 % discount on new tires. that is not honoring a warranty. a little over a year later, a person should not have to replace tires. manteca tires then when on to fax them paperwork and talk to them, which it took yokomama three days to get back with them and then they only offered a 40% discount on new tires. if i have balanced my tires, rotated them and done everything i should as a car owner and those tires are still making noise, then it is clearly the fault of the tires. what would make me buy yokomama tires again, even at a discount, when they do not honor the warranty they offered in the first place. these are obviously faulty tires and i am not the first one to complain of the extreme road noise from these tires. if you research on the internet, there are several other consumers that have experienced the same with yokohama tires. they too, have complained of yokohama not honoring warranties.

I purchased my tires on 3-14-10. there is such excessive road noise that within 30 minutes of a trip you will have a splitting head ache. my purchase of tires, road hazard warranty high per and 3yr whelel alignment was 627.45. i have gone to have tires rotated balanced and alignment regularly. it is a big inconveience to drive my vue because of the noise. this is to much. i have never been so unhappy and dissatisfied with the purchase of tires i have made like i am with these yokohama tires size 225/65r17 102 , 31920. i have nothing good to say about yokohama tires at this point. i can't get any satisfaction on them. you would think that new tires wouldn't pick up punctures so easy either but they do. i hate my purchase and i will not advise anyone to buy a yokohama tire of any kind. it can't be that the tires are worn because they are not worn. i haven't even put 20,000 miles on the tires yet. i even went as far to see if there was something wrong with my wheels. bearing.. seals.. and all and nothing is wrong there. i have had no satisfaction from anyone on these tires. now i found this site. let's see what kind of response i get here.

Had a blowout on right rear outside tire on vehicle (2008 mitsubishi fuso fe145) note: fe 145 was not an option to select for complaint). truck was empty coming back from runs and had not encountered any obstruction on road prior to failing. yokohama had already provided a credit for 2 tires previously replaced on our truck that were defective. this blowout showed evidence of tread separation. i'm concerned about the remaining 2 tires on truck and fear for the safety of others who have same tires.

Front tires chipping on the inside and outside. told to get them rotated and alignment. 6 lug nuts broke off during the rotation and the alignment was not that far off. told the tires where the wrong ones for that heavy of a vehicle. took to the dealer and he laughed at me and said they would love to charge me to replace all my lug nuts and those where the right tires for the vehicle and he said i was lucky to get 35,000 miles out of them because everyone else only got 25,000 miles with the tires he then tried to sell me a new set of tires. four days later the car decided to drive itself into a tree at 20 miles an hour. no air bags deployed but the car was totaled.

Oem tires wear out quickly, my wife and i owned 2 of these vehicles. one with yokohamas one with goodyears. uneven tread wear resultin in tire cupping and very rough ride. her rodeo was a ls 4wd mine is a 2wd base model. i look at tires on other rodeos i come across in parking lots and all show signs of uneven wear. also abs system is junk. any stop not executed on even level pavement results in loud grinding noise and very long braking distances. this is obviously a major problem with these vehicles and i consider it very dangerous. it's almost as if the computer gets confused and resets during anything other than ideal braking conditions. please investigate this issue further! my brakes just failed the other day as i was backing up and i hit another car. dt

Belt runout with one tire. this may be related to recall - 00v113001. mazda claims tires meet 94 load rating. however, the early failure of a tire leads me to think that the tires are too small and do not meet the 94 load rating. also, the labels issued by mazda say to use a replacement tire that is a 205/65 15 94s and inflate it to 35 psi. this is wrong. only 3 tires are available in that size with a load rating of 94. they all require you to inflate the tires to 44 psi or greater. this is a serious safety issue. mazda is suggesting owners under-inflate the tires by 9 to 16 psi. the standard tire rating for a 205/65 15 is a 1992. *ak (tiresize: 205/65 15)

Tires are wearing badly on outside edge. i have kept tires inflated to 35 psi (their maximum limit). i first noticed this when i had the tire rotated-the rear tires were worn, the front ones were not. now that four months have elapsed since last rotation, i see the same wear pattern on the rear tires (which were the front tires prior to rotation). these same tires had normal wear prior to rotation. i had to alignment checked and was told by an independent tire shop that the alignment was well within tolerances-this was done july 28, 2001. fairway mazda does not consider this to be a warranty or defect issue since the brunt is on me to prove that i have faithfully kept tire pressure at 35 psi. i have a 1984 honda prelude that has three year old tires, has its tires rotated alot less frequently, and is aligned less frequently and its tires are wearing normally and evenly and i check the tire pressure as often or less than i do the mazda. based on this, i believe there to be a defect either in the tires or the van. thank you for your help.*ak (dot number: fd9lnhl229 tiresize: p205/65r15)

On april 13, 2010 i was told by the salesman that the yokahama tire is as good as the michelin tires that i had on my car. (one of my michelin tires was showing steel belts, apparently from spinning my tires trying to get out of the snow on my gravel driveway this past march 2010.) since the michelins were nearly four years old and the salesman said the sidewalls were rotting, on april 13, 2010, i purchased four yokahama tires. on april 17, 2010, i visited friends in rehoboth beach area of delaware and while parking at the grocery store i hit a curb/parking stop while parking. the speed of travel at the time was at a coast since i had my foot on the brake at the time. the impact was so slight neither i nor my passenger was prompted to inspect the tire. after a normal weekend of driving through town and then returning to my home in lexington, va., i noticed the bubble in the sidewall of the right front tire. there was no impact mark on the tire that i could see that would cause me to think that i had hit something sharp. the salesman who sold me the tire pointed to a spot on the bubble( i could not discern the mark) with a pen point and said that there is a mark on the tire and it seems that the bubble was caused by hitting something sharp. now, i do not contend that i did not hit a parking/curb stop...i contend it was of no great speed at impact. i contend that this tire may be unsafe; especially if it had failed during my 450-mile drive home from delaware. the salesman said, well, if you hit it at just the right way, it will damage the tire. ( i think my old michelin tires would have faired better and i promptly replaced the yokahama with michelins. i feel safer but feel this needs to be reported. there was no blemish, yet the sidewall inside the tire was jaggedly ripped approx. 1-inch in length. case # yokahama 3270989 claim adjustment number d890153 purchased from terry's tire town, henrico, va 23222 through lexington express lube, lexington, va

TIRES - TREAD/BELT
03/14/2010

Yokohama yk520 335/45r/17 tires... driving along with my 2001 audi s4 and started noticing a wobble or shimmy in the steering wheel. kept getting worse. the tires have less than 20k miles on them so i though i needed an alignment. (entire front suspension has been upgraded).. i took the tires off to make sure i didn;t have a bent rim and noticed both front tires were worn out/cut on the outer corner/lip of the tires. i first thought it was caused by the control arms. my mechanic looked at them and told me that the belts had seperated on both tires causing the tire to deform and then hit my control arms/wishbone. he said it looks like another 100 miles and both front tires would have blown apart. that really sounded like fun on the freeway at freeway speeds...! i rotated the front tires with the good rear tires, and have checked them every 20 miles. absolutely no hitting or rubbing on anything. so yes, the belts had seperated.

While driving at 70mph the tread separated from tire. *ak the consumer states that the tread separated from the casing being slapped around the inside of the wheel well, causing about $1100.00 worth of damage. (then the tire blew the sidewalls). yokohama refused to pay for damage saying that something hit the sidewall causing it to blow out. consumer states this is not true, and that all of the tires were defective. *scc

1 set of replacement tires (4 each) were purchased and all have tread separation and 1 blowout one after another. sears auto center simply replaced the tires (under their pro-rated warranty) with the same brand eventhough i mentioned that there is a pattern of failure and it seems like the tires were defective. as of today, this will be the fifth time that my tires suffered a tread separation. all the defects were discovered during maintenance check of the car except for one which resulted in a tire blow out.*ak (tiresize: p20570t14)

The two front tires failed after approximately 23,000 miles of wear. the left front was worn through one set of steel belts for approximately 1/5 of the tire circumference. the left front was worn through the tread for approimately 1/5 of the tire circumeference. both areas of abnormal wear were on the right side of the tires when looking forward from the drivers seat. digital photos are available fo the failed tires. the tires were balanced and the front end was realigned when the tires were installed. the vehicle is maintained in a good state of repair and is not subject to abuse. the failed tires were replaced on a pro-rated basis at the pint of purchase. the front end was also relaigned. unfortunately, i was not provided with any quantitative information on this front end alignment so can only conclude that no unusual or abnormal conditions existed. the orignal symptom was an increasing level of vehicle vibration primarily when decelerating through 30 mph. the following addtional information was located on the inside or blackwall side of the tires: 85288 in raised numbers and 8h2298 in a recessed box with rounded corners. if you have any questions or require addtional information or copies of the photos of the failed tires, please contact me. best regards from the sunshine stae. s/s p>j> stager. *ak( dot number: cc60 tire size: p215/70r15 )

TIRES - VALVE
04/12/2010
April 12th i had the oil change in my 2009 dodge caravan at valvaline. as i was driving home my low light indicator came on. i checked the air pressure and they were all fine. i am in sales and do a great deal of travel in this caravan in the minneapolis area. i could feel the van pulling harder and harder to the right. when i pull in to the parking lot, the right front tire was low. the air valve blow out and complete deflated the tire. if i would have been driving, who knows what could have happened. i got the tire changed and brought the car to goodyear. i was telling me co worker about this and she has had the same thing happen to her 2009.
