| Defect Summary | Piaggio is recalling 850 my 2006-2008 aprilia scarabeo 500 motorcycles equipped with bitron spa fuel pump/fuel filters. the fuel hose connecting the fuel filter to the fuel pump/fuel filter mounting flange may come loose. if this connection is loose, or has become completely disconnected, there will be a drop, or loss of, fuel pressure to the engine. | |||||||||||||||

| We opened this pe after becoming aware of allegations that my 2006-2008 aprilia scarabeo 500model motorscooters were stalling when the downstream hose from the fuel pump deteriorates and/or separates from the pump.this issue was also the subject of numerous web forum posts.our discussions with dealers indicated other subject vehicle owners had also experienced this problem.subsequently, piaggio decided to recall the subject vehicles to address the problem (08v-522).with that recall, this pe is closed. | ||||||

| This report pertains to a 2006 aprilia scarabeo 500 motorcycle. i bought the motorcycle new in june 2008. it is common knowledge among scarabeo owners that the manufacturer sold these bikes with clamps missing from the in-tank fuel line, between the in-tank filter and the fuel pump. my dealer assured me that this issue had been resolved on my bike before i took delivery of it. within days of taking delivery of the bike, the engine was idling roughly, stalling at stop lights and running roughly when operated at slow speeds, below 35 mph. on several occasions, i applied power to start off from an intersection and the bike stalled. these were all symptoms of the fuel line clamp issue, as reported by many scarabeo 500 owners. i fixed the problem myself because i do not live near an aprilia dealer. upon removing the in-tank fuel pump, i immediately noticed that there were no clamps on either end of the fuel line. i installed the clamps, as well as replaced the fuel line with line approved for submerging in fuel (sae30r10), as it was unclear as to the suitability of the stock fuel line for submerged use. since the fix i have not had any recurrence of the problems. this is a safety issue and the manufacturer should recall all scarabeos and have them checked. *tr | |||

| Vehicle had an irregular, low idle, stuttering, lack of power and was very difficult to start. sometimes the vehicle's engine would die at intersections while idling. the engine stopping at intersections is dangerous and could cause an accident or death. upon investigation, i realized that the electric fuel pump hose inside the fuel tank was leaking therefore not supplying the appropriate pressure to the injector. i purchased a new submersible fuel line and two hose clamps and replaced the leaking oem fuel hose. *tr | |||
