Left front headlight will turn off suddenly or continuous flicker without warning. i often receive a left headlight dipped warning on my dashboard. the problem is especially bad when the headlights are set to auto. audi is aware of this issue, but does not yet have a reliable fix for this issue, and they have not voluntarily issued a recall. my left headlight will go out in both dry and wet weather. i'm pretty sure it is a wiring/design defect. it is very dangerous and distracting when my left headlight dips without warning. my audi owners are experiencing this issue. please push audi to issue a recall. *tr

Left headlight (bi-xenon type) flickers then fails on our 2005 audi a4 quattro. the only way to bring the light back on is to turn off the headlight switch and turn it back on again - at night, this means several seconds with no headlights on - which means that you must pull over to a safe place along the road (which sometimes is not possible) to cycle the switch. the light will often shut off shut off several times a minute requiring multiple resets of the system. there is tsb from audi describing this problem, but no action has been taken to resolve the issue. *tr

Problem: the left headlight flickers, i receive a warning message that left headlight dipped, then the left headlight will go out. to reset this, i can turn my lights off, then turn them on again, but i can only do this when stopped, as it's unsafe to do this while driving at night. once i turn them on again, they'll be ok again for a while, but the process will repeat itself again. *tr

Problem of dipped headlight on my 2005.5 a4 b7. purchased the car used in 2009 and have had this issue since purchase. asked mechanics to investigate but had found nothing wrong. usually it was just one side, either left or right (both have occurred multiple times). the other day was the third or fourth instance where both sides threw the dipped error, leaving me barreling down the highway at 75mph with no lights. while power cycling them usually brings them back, this is completely dangerous and unacceptable behavior for a vehicle that is allegedly working properly. it is clear to me, as an engineer myself, that this is a gross short-coming in design of the electrical system used to drive the lights. either the wiring, or ballasts are malfunctioning. audi has done nothing to ameliorate or warn me of this issue. *tr

Tl-the contact owns a 2005 audi a4. the contact stated that while driving at night the headlights would dim making it difficult to see the road at night. the contact looked at the lights and noticed that they were foggy. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they advised that he would have to replace the entire headlight assembly. the manufacturer was not contacted. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was approximately 70,000. the current mileage was approximately 90,000. the vin was unavailable. pmb

5 minutes after driving the vehicle to work as i do everyday, the error message on the dash read left headlight dipped, losing one side of the lighting to the vehicle. it continued to do this each day afterward whenever driving in the early morning or evening when lights would be required. a few months after, the right side had dipped as well. i looked up some possible scenarios of what was causing this issue and found a few things but have not pinpointed the issue; will have to try the dealership soon. 1) change out the bulbs (bi-xenon) 2) change out the ballasts 3) some other issue this is a safety concern of mine and many others as one day both lights will go dark while driving at night and will surely induce some type of accident. i hope that the dot will strongly consider forcing audi to resolve this issue as this is a preventable situation. thank you, *tr

Problem: left front headlight flickers frequently, and often shuts off while vehicle is in motion. it has been evaluated by several audi dealers, and at least 2 attempts to fix it have failed. the light bulb is not broken, since it turns back on after switching lights off. the problem is more frequent during cold weather. when it happens, a warning light comes on indicating a dipped headlight.

Randomly, and at all different speeds and road conditions, the left or right light will flicker and go out. the instrument panel will say dipped light. the lights must be turned off then on to correct the problem. very dangerous on dark curvy highways. so far both have not gone out together. dealers have no idea how to fix it as there are no error codes or cannot reproduce the problem. problem happens at least once a week, and sometimes several times in one evening.

The left headlamp will flicker and then dip towards the ground while driving, a dashboard warning says left headlamp dipped. the car has been to the audi dealer several times and they are unable to replicate the issue, and tell me the fault does not generate a computer code for them to check. it has started happening on a more frequent basis, at different speeds and on different road conditions.

While driving either during the day or during the night either one of the lights will start flickering and then eventually go out completely. while driving home one the freeway one night the right side started to flicker and then went out completely...i turned the lights off and then turned them on and the light worked perfectly fine for 5 mins or so and then the same thing happened again! the next day as i was going to work early in the morning (while it was still a little dark) the same thing happened again...but this time with the left side. it started to flicker and then it went out completely. i turned the lights off and turned them back on and the light worked as if nothing happened. i called an audi dealer and they said to bring the car in to get this issue fixed...they quoted me at $180 for the bulb and a grand total of $450 for the bulb plus installation. i just recently bought the car and ive been reading online about all the people that are having the same problem with their headlights.... i think its only fair to have a recall due to a poor design because i dont think its very safe for me or anyone to drive with one headlight and then having the chance of the other headlight going out at the same time!

Left or right headlights flicker and fail every time i use my headlights. no worse or better with bumpy roads. after a light goes out, turning the lights off and back on temporarily fixes the problem. but a few moments later the light flickers and fails. most recent failure was when going around a corner at night. oncoming traffic did not see me and nearly crashed head on. newley purchased car and headlights failed first night. i have researched the problem online and read dozens of threads with seemingly hundreds of people with the same problem. absolutely shocked audi has not put out a recall. serious safety issue with no current solution. the question is out of all the deadly accidents in audi cars, how many had this issue as a factor. i don't envy the person quickly driving down a winding back road, when their headlights go out an instant before a quick turn they wont see and wrap their car around a tree.

My audi a4 constantly will get a dipped headlight, meaning that the hid lights will dip and fail to stay on. it happens on both sides and will happen at night. i have driven in complete darkness and had both lights fail, if i turn the lights off for a few seconds and back on they will reset but it does not take long before they do it again and it is something that concerns me anytime i drive during dark times. i live in a area with snow and ice in the winter and also have to deal with deer and pedestrians during the summer. my lights going out all of a sudden for no reason has me questioning the safety my car provides. i am concerned that i may have my lights go out and wreck, or potentially hit a animal or person.

Vibrations on the road or at idle cause my audi a4 (b7)'s headlights to flicker or even turn off for a brief moment! it occurs at least once every night, and so far audi has issued no remedies. i have the xenon bulbs.

While driving the headlights (either left or right or sometimes both) will just go out. happens on the freeway, happens in the driveway or on a surfice road...it happens nearly every time i drive with the headlights on. audi can't replicate the issue when i bring it in and doesn't have a fix. many people report that replacing headlight bulb or ballace didn't fix problem. this is very dangerious as they just flicker and go out. there really should be a recall as this is a very common issue on the a4.

2005 audi a4 2.0t - headlights malfunction. warning sign comes on left/right headlight dipped out. during night, this is extremely dangerous. only way to get lights back on is to either turn headlights off and back on again or pull over, turn car off and restart. this is only a temporary fix though. within 10 to 15 min, the headlight will dip out again (light flickers and goes out). changing bulbs do not help. changing ballast does not help. within a 20 mile stretch, my headlights will dip out and black out on average of 3 times. this makes for very unsafe driving conditions.

Defective headlight assembly. google dipped headlight audi. causes rampant flickering that blinds everyone on the road or turn off your headlight and drive in the dark at night. changed bulb does not fix it. changed ballast does not fix it.

Problem occurs when the lights are turned on at night, the right headlight begins to flicker and then shuts off with an error, right dipped headlight. it occurs every night, which is dangerous and hazardous and makes it difficult to see and obscures the view to drivers of oncoming traffic. this problem is being suffered by a large numbers of owners and it should be recalled by the manufacturer.
01/10/201192000
My 2005.5 audi a4 quattro frequently experiences hid headlight problems, typically starting with a rapidly flickering headlight and then followed by the headlight(s) extinguishing. when this happens, there is a right or left dipped bulb failure indicated on the dashboard. the headlights can be restored by cycling power. this problem is occurring more frequently; currently it occurs at least every 30 minutes and seems to be triggered when braking the car to a stop, gently accelerating in lower gears, or when turning while climbing or descending steep hills. when this condition is experienced, the headlights flicker rapidly and eventually extinguish. restoring the affected headlight requires me to either pull off the road and cycle power or to manually turn the lights off and on while driving. this is unsafe, probably illegal, and very annoying to the driver and others in traffic. i had this condition repaired previously under warranty (40k miles), but it has recently returned and worsened. my audi now has 92k miles and is out of warranty. i am surprised that audi has not offered a cost-free recall action to fix this safety problem, particularly given its prevalence in audi a4's. the cost to repair this obvious design defect is high and apparently could involve replacement of the hid bulbs, igniters, and sensors.

Over the course of nearly two years of ownership, the right and left headlights have malfunctioned (turned off), with no consistent cause apparent. the specific error message that appears in the driver information screen is right/left headlight dipped. this condition is both unsafe, and illegal - as many states will issue a traffic violation for driving with a non-functioning headlight. it has happened about 7-8 times, the headlight flickers, then goes out, but will come back on when the car is restarted, then be fine for weeks or months at a time. the dealership has been notified of the problem on at least 3 visits, and has claimed that everything is fine and they can not reproduce said error. they have suggested/guessed that it is the xenon light bulb itself, however it has checked out fine each time, and as mentioned, has functioned flawlessly after each occurrence with merely a restart of the vehicle. no parts have been repaired or replaced, however they have claimed to perform a visual inspection of the electrical connections on at least one visit. given the availability of information online and by word of mouth from other fellow audi owners, this problem is not limited to just my case. i would like audi to step up and address this issue not only for their own pr, but for their customers' safety.

2005 audi a4 s-line's problems: dipped headlights flickering & intermittently going out and condensation in headlights.
01/31/200942300
Excessive moisture in both headlights. dealer stats that an o ring has failed and inferrs that this is a design problem. states that most headlight assemblies will clear up within about 10 minutes. mine have so much moisture in them that i have water drips. this causes the light output to be very dim. audi has a tsb that states the light assembly should not be replaced, and has no other repair suggestion (just live with the problem i guess). also, it appears that this happens on the 2002-2005 models as well as the 2005.5 - 2009 models of the a4. this is a known issue that audi doesn't seem to want to address. dealer has estimated the o ring replacement to be about $250 (for a $1 part!).

The passenger side xenon headlight unit flickers off and on and eventually go out while driving at night. turning headlights off and on while temporarily relieve the problem (sometimes less a few seconds, others time 30 min or hour). when problem started a couple years ago , time between the problem was long (weeks). the problem has persisted and now happens every time i drive at night. when problem first occurred (car under warranty, ~45k miles), nothing was found to be an issue by the dealership as the problem could not be replicated at the point of inspection. unfortunately, the car is now out of warranty. from things i've read, audi failed to program fault tests for the headlights, making the problem hard to diagnose. additionally, many audi owners spent large amounts of money trying to replace bulbs and replace ballasts (very expensive) only to have the problem persist. i've encountered a couple owners that have actually had charred connectors of the electrical connections affiliated with the lighting system (fire hazard?). the defective nature of the system is an obvious safety issue. please help facilitate an acceptable response program from audi.

Audi a4 (2005) - audi is apparently aware of the problem with the dipped headlights in their vehicles, but will not offer a fix to owners. if one does an internet search you can find literally dozens of sites dedicated to this issue and people trying to get a resolution. this problem causes one or both of the hid headlights to flicker and go out while driving and repeats even when the lights are turned off and back on again. aside from it being a safety issue, it's also causing owners in the form of driving violations, etc...and yet audi usa refuses to address this well known issue.

I have a 2005 audi a4 2.0t quattro avant and a 2006 audi a4 2.0t quattro sedan. on both cars, the xenon directional low beam headlamps shut off without any warning with message right dipped headlight. lights come on again only after turning switch to off position, waiting ten seconds and turning them back on. problem is intermittent but occurs every day. audi dealers have replaced xenon bulbs, igniters and pigtail to lamps, advising that wires get very hot. problem has not been fixed and constitutes great danger on dark roads. this has been recurrent on a regular basis for at least two years without a solution.

Dipped lower right headlamp. i have had the bulb replaced at my expense because the dealer said that would be the reason for it to flicker and go on and off. this did not remedy the situation. looking at all of the complaints a recall needs to happen.

Just purchased a 2005.5 audi a4. headlight sometimes will flicker and goes out. dashboard said dipped right headlight or dipped left headlight. i have learned that this is a common problem with this audi and my audi dealer is not acknowledging the problem. over 75% have these cars have had this problems. i bought this car for my son as his first car and has been a major safety issue for me. he was restricted only can drive in the day time and also causing us a lot of inconvenience. by reporting this i hope someone will look into this matter and have audi step up to resolve this problem before someone gets hurt. thanks.

Hello, i have a 2006 audi a4 which has the xeonon lights, they shut off about every time i drive my car at night and causes a huge driving distraction and the parts they say will fix it are very expensive and tend to not fix it at all, i had what they said fixed the problem only last for a month and they started to do the same thing again.
11/10/200945000
I have a 2005 a4 and for the past year have been getting a 'dipped headlight' warning on my dash lcd. while driving or idling, the driver's headlight will flicker & sporatically go off. my dearlership said to shut off car, wait a minute, and turn car back on. this seems to temporarily fix the situation, but when you are driving and the lights go out or flicker, it's not consive to pull over and shut your car off. the dealerships will not address this under a recall as there is still not one set up. audi is letting their loyal consumers down by putting us at risk of harm should we be driving and the lights just go out. this is a serious issue that needs immediate attention to ensure drivers are equipped with functioning equipment.

Headlights flicker and shut pff during driving of the vehicle. dipped headlight error displays, and happens tp both headlights evenly.
03/05/201038000
I own a 2005 audi a4 and my headlights keep flickering and then go out. either the right one or the left one goes out. i'll get either a left dipped headlight out or right dipped headlight out warning on the dash. it's recently been the right one going out but it started with left going out most of the time. this happens more than 50% of the time and is becoming a safety issue especially on the dark roads i travel on at night. i've already hit a deer in this car once, so this issue really concerns me, and i can't seem to get it fixed. i've notices this issue is happening to many other audi owners in the forums and blogs i've read about it. i have taken it to the dealer but the don't get an error code and have been unable to fix it. others have replaced the bulbs but the issue will continue after a couple of months i've noticed. something needs to be done about this issue or at in the dealership being able to detect an error code for this. they want you to take it to them when the headlight is out and that is to inconvienent and dealerships are closed at night anyway.
05/11/2010500001
I own an audi a4 2.0t 2005.5 (b7). the driver side xenon headlights flicker intermittently and shut off. this is not a headlight bulb issue the problem is getting worse. the dealer aware of this and is not taking responsibility because of the cost. i have read of many other owners of this make and model having the same problem. this has the potential of creating an accident. *tr

2005.5 audi a4 with xenon lights. both headlights flicker constantly and frequently turn off. by turning lights off and on, the bulb comes back on. it is dangerous for other drivers (flashing headlights) and for me (no headlights!). it is illegal, too. dealerships and independent mechanics have suggested a range of repairs but no one seems to be sure without spending thousands (ballasts and bulbs) on a repair which may or may not work. has been happening this way for years.

I will be driving my 2005.5 audi a4 2.0t at night and randomly my headlights will start to flicker than completely fail. i have to turn them off than back on the problem will go away then it will happen again sometimes more often. the parts are rediculously expensive so im putting off getting it fixed.
12/27/200614000
I own a 2005.5 audi a4 3.2 quattro. while driving, i constantly get a error message dipped right headlight and the headlight flickers then shuts off. i can get the headlight to come back on only if i turn off then on the headlights again which i believe is very dangerous when driving on the highway. took it to the dealer 3x and problem still not fixed. based on internet chats, it seems to be a common problem many people are having which audi has yet to find a solution to. it is an everyday safety concern.
10/31/200955000
The left headlight of my 2006 audi a4 quattro has this annoying -- and dangerous -- problem: 1. the left headlight flickers 2. it then turns itself off 3. the message left dipped headlight appears 4. the message is changed to a sign indicating that the lightbulb has failed. if i turn the light off (note: we're talking about driving at night here) and turn it back on again, the light will become normal again, for about a few minutes and then the cycle repeats itself. this problem is intermittent. it has been occurring a lot recently with the cold weather. i can't tell for sure whether it is temperature related. my audi dealer said that audi knows about this problem but doesn't know how to fix it -- changing the light bulb doesn't solve the problem.

On 2005.5 audi a4 with hid headlights, the headlights will flicker and then will turn off. console will report left/right headlight dipped. this is a common problem with the vehicle, however, audi has taken no action to rectify the problem.

I currently own a 2005.5 audi a4. my headlights constantly flicker, which is dangerous at night. i have been looking on audi-tech forums and this seems to be a real problem with many audi vehicles. when i first got the car, i used to get a flickering problem but the dealership fixed it by replacing the bulbs. however, i do not think it is the bulbs because the problem has apparently flared up again. please check into this as it may be reason for a recall.

Dipped headlight warning and headights flickering. brought to dealer for service said may need to be replaced $200-350 because they have to take entire bumper off. i am driving this car because my former 2001 a6 caught fire due to headlight panel in which there was a recall for. car burnt to the ground on top of a mountain leavening just the frame. audi could not have cared less, offer me a $2000 incentive for a new or used audi/volkswagen. after reading all of these complaints due to light flickering i am scared to drive my a4.

Intermittent headlight malfunction. over the course of a four months of ownership, the left headlight has malfunctioned (turned off), with no consistent cause apparent. the specific error message that appears in the driver information screen is left dipped headlight. this condition is both unsafe, and illegal - as many states will issue a traffic violation for driving with a non-functioning headlight. it has happened about 30 times, the headlight flickers, then goes out, but will come back on when the car is restarted or the lights are turned off and then back on, then could be fine for a while. now that it is cold outside the problem is much worse. haven't tried replacing parts yet since internet research indicates that many people have had the same issue and after much expense the problem just comes back or is not resolved. still looking for the correct solution. anecdotal evidence (conversational, and via internet owners' forums) suggests that the problem is widespread among a substantial portion of audi's model range and years. *tr

Headlights on my 2005.5 audi a4 equipped with xenon headlights suffer from intermittent failure. while driving headlights can begin to flicker for no apparent reason. flickering can get worse and one headlight will go out. a warning reading either left or right dipped headlight appears on the car. the other headlight that did not fail typically remains on and continues to function properly although it has also failed leaving the car with no functional headlights on two occasions. when the lights are cycled off then back on the headlights turn back on and may function properly or may flicker and fail again. the problem began under warranty and was very infrequent. the problem now occurs 50% of the time while driving at night. the car has been in for repair numerous times and the problem has not been corrected. typically while experiencing the flickering headlights i find that the safest way to drive is one failed headlight as there is then no flickering of headlights which i would assume is highly distracting to other drivers. a google search for left or right dipped headlight returns hundreds of thousands of results with numerous people having trouble getting audi to correctly repair the problem. as the xenon headlights are optional equipment on the cars the percentage of cars with xenon bulbs and headlight problems might be fairly high. *tr

My certified pre owned 2005 a4 had the xenon headlights changed 3 times in 1.5 years while under warranty. six months after the 50,000 warranty, the lights started flickering and then dimmed and flickered while driving at night with no warning on the display. i went to the dealer and both had to be replaced at a cost of $430 for the two lights and $236 dollars installation cost. i have owned the car for ~ 1.7 years and had five new headlights. i am not audi's quality control department. i also was able to turn the lights off and on to get them back on and its very dangerous at night driving down the highway at 65 mph. its is scary to say the least. *tr

Headlights on my 2005 audi a4 sedan vibrate and fail, sending an error message reading dipped headlight failure. this happens more when it's cold or wet. various items have been replaced. issue is intermittent. now out of warranty. this dangerous condition is very expensive to repair, if the dealer is capable of repairing. i'm learning than many other audi owners have this same problem. *tr

Headlights flicker and turn off while driving. message on dash reads 'dipped headlamp'. headlights will turn back on if light switch is turned off and back on. this is extremely dangerous, and many times now, the lights have turned off on the freeway or on dark mountainous road section. the lights turned off approximately 100 times during a 2600 mi trip. *tr

The lights on my audi a4 3.2 quattro will flicker and sometimes go out while driving at night time. if i stop and pull over the lights will go back on, but the lights will flicker. some days i have the problem frequently- sometimes i'll go for a stretch of 5-7 days with no problems at night. after recent research i have been lead to this site to report the problem and make someone aware of the fact that multiple audi owners have been having this problem also. i was referred from fixya.com- and i hope that a solution will be found for audi owners. the problems the lights can cause are distractions for other drivers, and it may lead to a ticket or another traffic violation for safety reasons. the lights flicker and a dipped light warning will appear on the dash and it has occurred more than once for my vehicle in the past 3 months. *tr

The interior surface of the headlight lenses on my 2005 audi a4 are normally 50% to 80% covered with moisture condensation and water droplets. audi claims this is normal and refuse to warranty the lights. audi states in technical bulletin group: 94, number: 05-04, that the affected headlight lens surface should clear after approximately 10 minutes of light operation, although the entire surface may not clear. audi further states that condensation does not affect performance of light assemblies. i have found that no amount of light operation provides significant clearing of the lens surface. *tr
