The right dipped headlight flickered and then went out. turning the lights on and off, restores the right headlight, but is a little dangerous at speed. this is a problem and in bad weather very dangerous.

Both headlights shut off at any time. error message says left/right dipped headlamp. it seems like a design/engineering flaw. this is a dangerous safety issue, especially at night. this could result in death, injury, and monetary fines from the police. there should be an immediate recall to fix the problem.

This problem has occurred many times since i have owned the car with increasing frequency. now the issue is happening every time i drive the car. the issue is that when my lights are on, they will flicker and go out. i will get an error message that says dipped headlight. the only solution to this problem is to flip the lights off and flip them back on. doing this results in the car being without lights for several seconds. sometimes the right light will go out and sometimes the left light goes out. they can also happen at the same time, which results in me driving at night with no lights. this is a serious issue that affects the safety of the car. i have been researching the issue for some time and found thousands of other people with his issue. audi is well aware of the problem but does not have a solution. they continue to tell us to change the light bulb at our cost, which does not solve the problem. since this is a very serious safety issue that could cause a crash, resulting in injury or death, there needs to be a recall and solution provided. this is a design defect in the car and audi should be responsible for fixing it.

The vehice for the past several months has had head lamp problems. i will be driving along and all of a sudden one of the headlamps will flicker and then go out. a warning on the dash will say left (or right) headlamp dipped. the only way to alter the situation is to turn the headlamp off and then back on at speed. this is a very dangerous situation. the dealer has said they cannot duplicate the situation and therefore cannot fix it. an internet search revealed that many audi a4 owners have been experiencing the same problem on a regular basis. it is beyond belief that audi, a manufacturer that prides itself on safety, has not investigated this problem and come up with a fix. i believe a recall should be initiated and audi should be required to fix this very dangerous problem/defect.

Right and left dipped headlight warnings appear frequently since the year i purchased this car. the headlight flickers/pulses, then goes out and the warning appears. turning lights to the off position and back on generally brings both headlights back on but the same headlight or other side will often fail moments later. once, both headlights failed while driving on the highway; major safety issue. this happens in all weather conditions and at all driving speeds. *tr

When car hits a bump or dip in the road, the right front self-leveling headlight system sticks and shuts off the headlight, and show a right dipped headlight message on dash. stopping the car, shutting off the lights, and restarting usually resets the lights but it usually happened again soon after. this frequent occurrence is a safety issue suddenly being without one headlight driving at night. *tr

Several years ago when i first purchased this audi, one of my headlights would occasionally flicker while i was driving, and then produce an error code: left dipped headlight. the problem eventually went away. now, two years later, with the bulbs still producing light, while driving both headlights will flicker, generally when associated with a bumpy road, and then will suddenly turn off, producing two error codes right dipped headlight and left dipped headlight. the bulbs are somewhat new and all the headlight parts are oem, and this becomes extremely dangerous as it will happen while i'm driving at night in the dark. i understand from online blogs that several other 2006 audi a4 owners have the same problem, which ties back to the headlight assembly. i feel strongly that nhtsa should look into this issue given that headlights are an important function of a car while and this is a serious hazard for both the driver and other drivers when driving in the dark. thank you for your consideration. *tr

The xenon headlamps will flicker then go out, most of the time individually and periodically both. this occurs at anytime and under any condition. a service letter was sent out identifying this issue and to take the car in for the repairs. however, these repairs weren't addressed due to my warranty having expired. these repairs should be addressed irrespective of warranty period for this is a major safety issue when driving at night. this is a known issue by audi owners who have these lights irregardless model year. there are hundreds of posts on the internet. a recall may be warranted not just a service announcement that doesn't cover all affected vehicles. here is a link to google search of other audi owners' with this issue, https://www.google.com/#hl=en&biw=1366&bih=643&sclient=psy-ab&q=2006+audi+a4+xenon+headlights&oq=audi+xenon+headlights+2006&gs_l=serp.1.0.0i8i30l2.13609.16512.4.21346.5.5.0.0.0.0.106.473.4j1.5.0...0.0...1c.p2f9wmxanje&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&fp=51a6e4b639342c8a. i look forward to your response. thank you! *tr

I was driving home and right headlight started flickering, almost like a strobe light then all of a sudden the light goes out then comes back on by its self. then goes back off and stays off so i pull off the road. i look at the light and it is still out. i turn my lights off then back on and it works like new, but it keeps happening. this is very dangerous. what happens if both light goes out and this happens, its the manufacturer fault not mine. there should be a recall or do something about this before someone gets hurts, or lose their life. *tr

This appears to be a common occurrence with all audi a4's with hid xenon lighting. at approximately 50,000 miles many owners report flickering headlights and then within seconds either left or right or both headlights will stop functioning. this always seems to happen during the first 5 minutes after startup. the appropriate error will come on the audi information system left headlamp dipped or right. i have learned that turning the headlamp switch to off and turning the lights on again resets the issue. this may occur up to 5 times or more before the lights work normally. this can be a very dangerous situation at night in poor visibility when both lights go out. my audi dealer audi of rochester hills in michigan charged me $80 to inspect the situation and said i would need to spend an additional $650 approx. to fix the problem. to this date i live with the problem and read too many internet blogs about audi a4 owners that spent the $650 to find the problem not resolved. http://www.audizine.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-332613.html i am hoping that my complaint is not the first and the nhstb will do an investigation. *tr

My left head light turns off by itself and i get the left dipped headlight warning. the light comes back on if i turn it off and turn it back on but it'll go out again. i talked to the audi dealer and told me to change the light bulb (which would be around 500 dollars). but the light bulb isn't out. it still turns on. so they told me that i might need to change the whole light assembly which would cost me around 1500-2000 dollars. after doing a few researches on the internet, i saw a lot of people are having the same problem as me and neither of the methods the dealer suggested would solve the problem. please investigate on this.

For the past 12 monts my audi a4 is having a constant dipped headlight warning while driving at night. most occurences are with the left headlight but there are times where both headlights have gone out complelety putting me in a very dangerous situation and i have had a couple of close and deadly accidents. i want audi to take responsiblity for this issue and cover all associated cost to resolve this problem.

Passenger side head light started flickering and would go dim. control panel in car gives warning the head lamp is dipped. as time went on head light would go out completely. roughly several months later both head lights would flicker for a while and then both go out completely. when the head light switch is turned off and then on the lights will come on. unfortunately this only last a few minutes and they both go out again. i drive on rural roads so there is no street lighting at night and little to no shoulders to pull off the road. losing both head lights is very scary. turn the head light switch off and on while driving at 45 mph every few minutes makes for a long drive home. dealers claim they have no knowledge of the issue. i started off driving a 1963 covair which was supposed to be unsafe at any speed; it never had the headlights go out. can the nhtsa help us all out and get the news out to audi that there is an issue.

The left xenon hid headlights on my 2006 audi a4 is constantly flickering and going out. you need to turn it on and off several times for it to stay on, but only for a short period of time. very annoying and dangerous. sometimes both headlights will go out at once, essentially limiting my visibility. as stated in other complaints filed, this is a serious safety issue and it is extremely frustrating.

Hid headlights go out while driving the car. operator must shut off headlight switch and turn back on for headlight to go back on. this happenedm to the left headlight at 50,000 and the right at 90,00o after dealer put in a waterpump. dealer denied responsability, not covered under warranty price form repair >$700.00

Left & right dipped headlight headlamp. happens daily. it's a saftey concern when driving at night.

Right headlight dipped warning from failure code. after driving initially with lights on, the right light will flicker and then turn off. if one then turns off the lights and turns it back on , the right light will reactivate. but after another 2-3 minutes the right light will flicker and fail again. this is a safety issue and audi refuses to extend warranty on it

While driving with headlights on auto a warning light for left dipped headlights came on. i turned the light switch off and back on again and the warning went away. this happened every once in a while for quite some time and turning lights off and back on made the warning go away. now the problem has progressed to the point that i lose both left or right headlight almost every time i drive the car. the failure has been one light or the other never both at the same time so far. this nessecitates turning off the lights for about five seconds and then turning them on again to get both lights working again, very dangerous and dissconcerting at night especially at highway speeds. the lights fail in this manner one to three times per trip before staying on the remainder of the trip. so far i have not had any success with dealership fixing the problem. i know that audi does have knowledge of the problem because they have extended the warranty on the headlights to 4 years / 50000 miiles. unfortunately i was out of warranty on time by the time i received notice of the warranty extension. bottom line, the dealership can't seem figure out if the problem is the lights, or the module, or the igniters. the car is not safe to drive at night, very frustrating.

Left and right dipped light indicator even after having them reviewed and adjusted and ultimately replaced. audi warranty would not cover the repair cost due as we were slightly over the 50000 mileage allowance. ended up paying almost $300 for the repair. we continue to have dipped light problems.

Headlamp has dipped multiple times while driving (day and night) since i have owned the vehicle (now at 77k). there is an audi tsb out for this issue but can never get a certified audi dealership to fix this issue as they cannot make it happen on command when they inspect it. not only is this a known issue but it is an issue that is a safety problem that audi and it's affiliates do not take seriously or show determined interest in fixing.

Get dipped headlight signal and headlight turns off at random. light will come back on if i turn the switch to off and then back on. this is a systemic problem as noted by many online audi forums. it is not safe to have your headlights turn off at random.

I was driving my audi a4 a few nights after i purchased the car. after about two miles from my home the audi a4 driver's side headlight started flickering and then went out (very dangerous) so i thought the light had burned out. the next morning i started the car going to look for a bulb to replace the headlight, noticed the light came on while i was in my dark garage. the light only comes back on after i turn the lights off which is also very dangerous. i live in an unincorporated area that's not well lit so i am afraid to drive this car at night. i have contacted audi, but i haven't gotten a response. i took the a4 to an audi dealership in denver and was told audi doesn't know if the issue is the light itself or the ballast/igniter. i've replaced the bulb and the problem still exist so i took the a4 to several independent euro shops and got the same diagnosis, the igniter is a common problem with audi vehicles. i am asking the ntsb to please issue a recall for this vehicle.

Intermittent headlight malfunction. over the course of a year of ownership, the headlights have malfunctioned (turned off), with no consistent cause apparent. the specific error message that appears in the driver information screen is left (or right) headlight dipped. this condition is both unsafe, and illegal - as many states will issue a traffic violation for driving with a non-functioning headlight. it has happened approx. 40 times, the headlight flickers, then goes out, but will come back on when the car is restarted or clear if the headlight is turned off then back on. it will then be fine for days or weeks at a time. it has been consistently getting more frequent and worse. at times, both headlights will turn off by themselves while driving causing a very dangerous situation and quick action to avoid injury or death. then randomly turn back on. multiple dealerships have been notified of the problem on at least 3 visits, and has claimed that everything is fine and they can not reproduce. they have suggested/guessed that it is the xenon light bulb itself, or ballast. annecdotal evidence (conversational, and via internet owners' forums) suggests that the problem is widespread among a substantial portion of audi's model range and years.

Our 2006 audi a4 has a reoccurring issue with the front left headlight. it will regularly begin to flicker for several minutes before completely shutting off. the car will tell us we have a left dipped headlight. turning the headlights completely off and then back on will fix the issue for several minutes before the flickering starts again and repeats the cycle. this had occurred as many as 5 to 6 times before the headlight will stay on. even then it has happened again later in the evening. we brought the car to two different audi dealerships sunset audi in portland or and robert larson audi of tacoma, wa and both say they could not recreate the problem and that it is probably just a bulb going bad. this problem started in the fall of 2008 and the bulb has been going bad for 3 years. i've asked that they switch the bulbs to test their theory and they would do it but for $100. a replacement bulb would cost upwards of $500. both visits occurred within the warranty period, unfortunately for us we are no longer within the warranty period. headlights randomly turning off in the middle of the night is most certainly a safety issue. the fact that audi has not been willing to get to the bottom and fix this issue is most disconcerting.

On multiple occasions over the last two years the left and right headlights go out and a dipped headlight warning light shows up on the dash. turning the headlights off then back on will bring them back on momentarily until a vibration knocks them out again. it's usually one side or the other but sometimes both lights go out at the same time. no fault codes are stored when this happens.

The left headlight of my 2006 audi a4 quattro regularly flickers, then turns itself off, then indicates a left dipped headlight along with an indicator that the light bulb has failed. this has happened on several occasions, intermittently. if i turn the light off (note: we're talking about driving at night here) and turn it back on again, the light will become normal again, for about a few minutes and then the cycle repeats itself. i have taken it into the audi dealership, and they have said that audi knows about this problem but doesn't know how to fix it -- changing the light bulb doesn't solve the problem.

This complaint is regarding audi vehicle model a4 from year 2006-2008. the issue is concerning the hid xenon head light that i have on the vehicle and this head light is the original equipment that audi puts in the vehicle, which it flickers at turn off it self when driving and sometimes even when vehicle is not in motion. i think it is very dangerous when the light goes off at night on the highway and it happens very often, like 5 times a night. when the light is off, the vehicle gives a warning so turning it off and on will temporarily put the light on. i figured about the problem and have been to the dealer's service center for three times and mention the issue to them and they just state that there is no problem with headlight.

Left headlight flickers and then goes out randomly on my 2006 audi a4 while i am driving. this happens almost daily. the consequence is that you are driving without a headlight. to correct the problem, you have to turn the headlight switch off and then back on again. to do this, you have to stop the car so when you turn the headlights off to reset the left light, you won't be driving without headlight. sometimes the light will go out again within a few minutes and sometimes it is ok.

Problem started some 3-4 months ago, at the beginning my right bi-xenon headlight started just flickering, but now, after they flicker, they turn off. i receive a message on the dash stating dipped right headlight. after i turn off both headlights on the switch, they work again fine for some period but than again, they start flickering and shutting down again. my both bi-xenon bulbs look fine, and the light is very bright at night so i don't believe it is the bulbs. in addition, i have noticed that they go off more frequently in the winter months and after hitting a bump. the right light seems to be only affected.
01/09/200938000
There are two separate conditions that both occur in vehicles with bi-xenon, with or without adaptive lighting (afs): one xenon light on either side sporadically flickers or flashes and goes out. when headlamps are turned off and on again or at ignition cycle, the headlamps may function properly or exhibit the same behavior; one xenon light on one side fails permanently. *pe

My concern is with the hid headlights on my 2006 audi a4 2.0. shortly after turning the lights on, the left headlight flickers and then turn off completely. i get an error message left dipped headlight. at first, this problem occurred 2-3 times a week, but now happens every single time i turn on the lights. the only way to fix is for me to turn off the lights for 5 seconds and then turn back on. at times i do this on the highway or on the neighborhood roads. i've brought it to the dealer - new country audi of greenwich but they claim they can't reproduce it. they suggested replacing the headlight ($300+) but offer no guarantee that this will solve the problem.

Dipped headlight error turns off one or both of the headlights.
03/01/201045000
Shortly after purchasing my certified pre-owned 2006 audi a4 2.0 the left headlight flickered and turned off, resulting in a dashboard error message left headlight dipped. this continued and frequently continues to occur to this day. when it does occur i have to turn off the headlights and then turn them back on; leaving me in the dark while driving at night. i had the audi service center check out the issue. they said the hid bulb needs to be changed and it would be $400. i could not afford this and did not have it changed. i've read hundreds of complaints online describing this very same issue. many stating that replacing the bulbs do not always solve the problem and much more costly repairs are needed. audi of america has let its' customers down on this one. this is a serious safety issue that the dot and nhtsa need to address.
02/15/200835000
Audi headlight shutters and shuts down. indicator states 'left headlight dipped'. failure started as intermittent and is now as often as everyday when headlights are on. nothing has been done to correct the failure. when the light is turned off then on again, the light will work and then will shutter/shut down again. consequence is a missing headlight at night which can cause other vehicles not to see me or lack of lighting in the driving pathway which could result in an accident (pedestrian, other vehicles, bikes, animals, etc..). car was taken into the dealer several times but dealer has claimed that no issue is bulb related and will cost over $400us to replace at my expense.
10/10/201048500
On our 2006 a4 2.0 quattro after turning on low beam xenon continually flickers and eventually goes out. this is followed a left bulb failure indication. recycling the light switch may or may not solve problem. turning car completely off seems to be a little more effective but all is obviously a major safety issue as well as a violation of traffic laws. i told my audi service guy about this but although audi says to rerplace bulb (over $200us ) he was sure this would not solve problem. he said he has numerous customers with the problem. i cant believe this is allowed. driving without a headlamp is a traffic violation for a reason. it is a major distraction for driver and i'm sure on coming traffic.

2006 audi a4 dipped headlight / flicker / problem. left or right headlight will dip and minutes later, the other light will go out. audi said that they will not fix the issue because they could not replicate the problem. this has happened late at night and almost resulted in a ticket. turning off the light and turning them back on does not fix the problem.

About 2mins after i turn on the headlights, my left headlight starts to flicker and soon turns off. this is followed by a dashboard indicator light which says left dipped headlight. i have to turn off my headlights for at least 20sec before my left headlight reliably comes back on. problem is esp pronounced when the ambiant temp is below 40.

On my 2006 audi a4 2.0t quattro sedan, the xenon directional low beam headlamps intermittently shut off suddenly and without warning, giving a message of right dipped headlamp. the lights come on again only after turning the switch to off position, waiting ten seconds, then switching them back on. the problem is intermittent but occurs every day. audi dealers have replaced xenon bulbs, igniters and pigtails to lamps, advising that wires become very hot. problem has not been fixed and constitutes great danger on dark roads. this has been recurrent on a regular basis for at least two years without a solution.

Intermittent headlight malfunction. over the course of a year and a half of ownership, the right headlight has malfunctioned (turned off), with no consistent cause apparent. the specific error message that appears in the driver information screen is right headlight dipped. this condition is both unsafe, and illegal - as many states will issue a traffic violation for driving with a non-functioning headlight. it has happened about 7-8 times, the headlight flickers, then goes out, but will come back on when the car is restarted, then be fine for weeks or months at a time. the dealership has been notified of the problem on at least 3 visits, and has claimed that everything is fine and they can not reproduce. they have suggested/guessed that it is the xenon light bulb itself, however it has checked out fine each time, and as mentioned, has functioned flawlessly after each occurrence with merely a restart of the vehicle. no parts have been repaired or replaced, however they have claimed to perform a visual inspection of the electrical connections on at least one visit. annecdotal evidence (conversational, and via internet owners' forums) suggests that the problem is widespread among a substantial portion of audi's model range and years.

I am having the same issue as the other 59 related complaints on the nhtsa website w/ my 2006 audi. i have contacted audi of america without any resolution. instead audi technical service instructed me to contact a dealer directly. i have done this and was advised to have the bulbs replaced. thank god that i didn't because obviously this is clearly a recall. i would be more than happy to file a class action lawsuit as this posses safety concerns. both of my headlights flicker and go out - even at the same time!

1.) whenever the car is started. the first 5-10 minutes are the worst. 2.) every time i used the headlights they fail. turning them off and back on will resolve the problem 90% of the time. 3.) i will try replacing the xenon bulbs, then the ballasts to correct problem but i've read this is not a permanent fix.

Audi headlight shutters and shuts down. indicator states 'right headlight dipped'. failure started as intermittent and is now as often as everyday when headlights are on. nothing has been done to correct the failure. when the light is turned off then on again, the light will work and then will shutter/shut down again. consequence is a missing headlight at night which can cause other vehicles not to see me or lack of lighting in the driving pathway which could result in an accident (pedestrian, other vehicles, bikes, animals, etc..). car was taken into the dealer several times but dealer has claimed that no issue is reported in the cars software and therefore cannot be fixed.

Left headlight dipped problem with my 2006 audi a4. the lights come on when the car starts, and they flicker a little, sometimes the left headlight will shut off and i will have to turn the lights off and turn them back on to 're-start' the left headlight. often this will also happen while driving if i am on a bumpy road or a curvy road. the left headlight will go out, and it will give me the 'left headlight dipped' warning on my dash. i will usually have to wait till i get to a stop sign or stop light to shut off my lights and turn them back on. this seems to fix the problem temporarily, but it continues to happen. audi has not been able to remedy the situation.

On the 2006 audi a4, the left headlight will flicker then turn off. i have to turn off the lights, then back on and the light is normal again for a period of time. the problem is intermittent. many others on the web are complaining about this problem and audi has not recalled and does not appear to have a common fix. the most common solution others have experienced is replacing the igniter.

Audi addaptive headlight flickering. 2006 audi a4 with addapitive (xenon) headlamps that flicker for no apparent reason. this defect has now happened more than 20 times, and was once addressed by dealer for almost $900.00. several months later, same thing happened. problem seems to come and go. sometimes 5 or 6 months will go by before it re-occurs. thisis a saftey problem for several reasons: 1. while this flickering is occuring it causes oncoming drivers to endure a flashing brite white light, much brighter than standard halogen high beams, being directed right at them. 2. if this flickering goes on for more than several seconds, the guilty lamp goes out, cutting night vision considreably. 3. replacement of bulbs, a dangerous proceedure warned against in owners manual, is very expensive, and does not address the problem. 4. this problem has been reported by a number of owners on several web sites for audi owners. audi is aware of this defect and has ignored it for several years. headlamps are a significant safety item, and as such, need to operate in a reliable manner that is safe for not only the operator of the affected vehicle, but also those around them.

Right or left headlight turns off at random times and the driver information display shows a headlight dipped warning. brought this to the notice of the audi dealer, who insisted that the bulb is not covered under warranty after the first 12 months and further noted that the problem could not be recreated and no code was stored. this is a serious safety issue that needs to be addressed by audi.

I have a 2006 audi a4, and the dipped headlight (mostly on the left side, but occasionally on the right side) flickers, then goes off while the car is being driven. if the headlight switch is turned off and then back on the light will come back on. sometimes it stays on for as long as i drive the car, and other times it will repeat the flicker, and then go off again after a few minutes. the car has been taken to an audi dealer for repair, and they were unable to fix the problem. they changed the light bulbs, but it did not fix the problem. this has happened repeatedly since 2007. i asked the dealer about this again recently, and they have not offered a solution. the problem has occurred in warm weather, cold weather, dry, wet, snow, or rain. it appears to happen when i slow to a stop, make a turn, or even change lanes. it has even occurred when driving along a straight stretch of road without out stops.

I have a 2006 audi a4 quattro. the left headlight is constantly flickering and occassionally will go out. at this point i have to turn off the lights and turn them back on. this will turn the light back on, but it continues to flicker. my vehicle is under warranty and i have requested the dealer repair it. they stated that it is not covered by warranty and that i will need to pay fo rthe repairs. i have done research on the internet and i have found others to have this same problem. some have paid for the repair, just to have it occur again. i am concerned that one night this light will fail while driving at night on a dark road with my wife and son in the car.

My left headlight flickers and then goes out. i do notice that this seems to occur more during the evenings with cooler temperatures. i do have to flip lights off quickly because i am driving at night and then flip back to lights on. they will work for awhile. i have already been warned by our state police regarding this safety issue and will probably get a ticket the next time. it sounds like there is beginning to be a increase in complaints regarding this problem. lets get this investigated before someone gets hurt or someone cannot afford to drive due to tickets and increase in insurance for the tickets. *tr

Within the first minute of turning headlights on, headlights begin to malfunction. most apparent at night since there is a loss of vision when headlights malfunction. malfunction occurs when vehicle is stopped or in motion. the headlights will flicker on and off. flickering occurs almost every time headlights are turned on. on occasion, the driver's side low beam headlight will completely turn off after flickering for several minutes. both failures appear to occur more frequently in cold temperatures. simultaneously with the low beam light turning off on its own, a warning light illuminates on the dash board stating left headlight dipped. malfunctions cause driver to lose full vision of outside surroundings at night and while driving in poor road conditions. malfunctions cause a severe safety hazard. flickering also causes a distraction to on-coming vehicles and vehicles traveling ahead in the same lane. nothing has been done to permanently correct the malfunctions. when the driver's side headlight involuntarily shuts off, the problem can be temporarily corrected by turning the headlight switch off and on again. i have not identified a solution to the flickering headlight problem. i have been researching the malfunctions to determine if anyone else has identified permanent solutions to the flickering and headlight failure problems. i have discovered that the problems are common amongst audi a4 owners (2005 and 2006 models). other owners have solved the problem by replacing the headlight igniter or ballasts. *tr

2006 audi a4 headlights intermittently shut off while driving. this very dangerous condition occurs daily and sometimes three or four times during a 45 minute commute. the headlight switch has to be moved to the off position then back to on and usually that restores them, otherwise car must be stopped and shut off then turned back on. this is a very serious safety problem. *tr

It has happened since i first got the car implying that this is a manufacturer defect. constantly while driving at night as soon as i turn on one of my headlights i get a right dipped headlight error and my headlight flickers and goes out. the bulb fires and ignites just fine, but immediately after seems to flicker and go out, always get the error as soon as they turn on. the dealers won't fix this problem as they say it's most often replicate. the times they've attempted to fix other vehicles by switching the ballast and the bulb almost never works implying that it could be a software or design issue. this is a major concern for people that own this car. a simple online survey poll of 83 owners of this vehicle, 68% of them have had this issue. out of 83 voters, 49% of them still have this issue after trying to fix it. that tells you how widespread this problem is. it's a headlight, it's a very critical component for driving safely at night and is illegal to drive with only a single headlight in most states. this headlight issue needs to be a recall for audi to fix this issue.*tr

Intermittent headlight failure (headlight dipped): regarding my 2006 audi a4 quattro, the left and right headlights will often go out while driving. this is more frequent on the left headlight. the error displayed is left headlight dipped or right headlight dipped. it has also occurred on both headlights at the same time. the problem is temporarily corrected by manually switching off the headlights, and then turning them back on. this is an obvious safety concern due to the reduction in visibility while driving at night. i was unable to convince my authorized audi service center to correct the problem while the car was under manufacturer warranty because they could not duplicate it on site. calls to audi of america also did not result in any action being taken to correct the problem. this problem has been ongoing for several months now, starting in august 2009. *tr

The left dipped headlight of my 2006 audi a4 first flickers and then shuts off. this seems to occur more when the temp outside is below 55 degrees. if you shut the lights off (which is not a good idea while driving) wait about a minute or so the left dipped headlight comes back on and will stay on. this has happened repeatedly. i've owned the car for almost 2 years now. i have brought it to the dealer, they have looked at it and have replaced the light. they claim there is nothing wrong with the car, light or main computer. *tr

An error message appeared on the display console saying, left headlight dipped. it happened during day and the dealerships business ours, so we immediately drove it to the service department, leaving the error message on the screen. on september 22, the dealer stated that the left headlight was burned out and that we needed to replace it. we knew that the light was not burned out so we rejected their repair resolution. sure enough, when we picked up the car, we turned on the lights and the left headlight worked fine. on the evening of september 22, the error message appeared again, this time on the right (passenger) side. there are over 3900 web pages on the internet of other audi owners who have described the same problem from model years as far back as 2003, most with no resolution. *tr

I was driving home with my 2 year old son, and the left and right headlights continued to dip, every few minutes, all the way home. an error message would appear on the display console saying either, left headlight dipped or right headlight dipped. what was most frightening was when they both went out, seconds from one another, on the part of the drive where there were no street lights and plenty of dashing deer. on september 17, we took it back to the dealer and heard the same story, i.e. that until they could reproduce the fault, they could not fix the car. furthermore, as the car is nearing the end of the warranty period, should we bring it in later, and they are able to recreate the fault, we would still be responsible for paying for it, despite prior reports of the issue. *tr

I drive a 2006 audi a4 quattro s-line and my passenger side headlight seems to go off randomly when i am driving at night. once i complete turn off the lights and turn back on, the headlights work for some time. this is not the first time it has happened to me and i also see that lot of others sharing similar experiences online.. ex: http://www.fixya.com/cars/t593349-audi_a4_left_dipped_headlight_problem i got pulled over by a cop since my passenger side headlight was off. luckily i just got a warning and i didn't get any ticket. it is very annoying to turn off and on a headlight all the time and i feel there is some inherent problem with the car. please help me out. thanks manjesh *tr

Audi a4 b7 platforms with hid headlights have numerous problems with lights turning off while in operation. this has been documented on many internet forums. searching for audi headlight dipped or audi headlight flicker will yield many results. the problem manifests initially as flickering headlights. proper state for hid headlights is not maintained and flickering ensues. if proper steady state is not retained within a tolerable time the headlights will turn off requiring a refiring to create ignition in the bulb again. the headlight dipped message tells the operator that the dipped headlight is not operational. a dipped headlight is the european term for a low beam. once the headlight has gone out it will remain out until the headlight system is refired by turning off the lights and turning them back on. this procedure can be followed to reobtain lighting while the vehicle has lost lighting in motion but depends on the operator's ability to recognize the situation and perform the appropriate action. a vehicle's ability to properly maintain operational headlights is important for collision avoidance. the mitigating factors for this issue are the fact that often it is only one headlight that goes out and that with the proper procedure the headlights can be relit. aggravating factors for this safety issue are the fact that hid headlamp assemblies are several thousands of dollars to replace and many of the vehicles that exhibit this problem will soon be off of the warranty. additionally the manufacture warranty does not cover bulb replacement, which costs several hundred dollars for hid bulbs, and requires bulb replacement before service of the remaining parts of the system. the cost allocation will result in many vehicles remaining on the road with defective headlight systems. *tr

Turn car on, lights go on then as soon as i start driving, mostly with a cold engine, acceleration, left turn, slight bump/vibrations in the road the left headlight goes off, there is a warning message in the car that says left dipped headlight, but when i turn the lights off then back on and it fixes the problem, then a few minutes later it happens again and if you turn the lights off it will fix it again, but it does happen (almost) every day. if i go particularly slow in and out of parking lots sometimes i see the light flicker but it does not always shut off right away, it may take a minute or two for it to do this later. this headlight issue happens daily and the dealer states it is a light bulb issue, but the bulbs are very expensive to purchase and replace and i have read many people having the same issue with my same vehicle and replacing the bulb does not fix the issue, it is a malfunction that the dealer is unaware of how to fix. *tr

Left headlight extinguishing during driving at night. dealers have claimed that they cannot fix the problem after repeated attempts. this causes dangerous conditions because the light goes out with no warning. this has happened many times while driving at night. *tr

I have a 2006 audi a4 3.2l and i have been having this problem on and off for a few years now. the left headlight flickers and then it turns off. then i get a warning message that says left dipped headlight. but when i turn off the lights and then turn them on again, both headlights would turn on just fine. but then few minutes later, the left headlight starts flickering again and turns off, repeats over and over again. this happens to me frequently and it is very dangerous especially when i'm driving on highway or very dark areas, as i have to turn off the headlights to reset them. i did some research on the internet and it looks like many people are having the exact same issue. i have been to dealerships to fix this issue for years and they have not been able to do anything about it so far. *tr

The hid headlights had been flickering for almost a year in my 2006 audi a4 quattro 2.0. originally (almost a year ago, approx 35k miles) i brought it to the dealership to have the problem investigated, and they told me they could find nothing wrong. the headlights would flicker and then extinguish, leaving me driving in the dark, or with only one headlight. the display in my car would indicate left or right headlight 'dipped'. if i shut the light switch to the off position, then to the on position, the headlight would re-ignite. i recently had my car serviced again, and they indicated the left front headlight bulb would need to be replaced. after replacing it (at a cost of $515), after driving it for about a week, i noticed the condition was still present. i brought it to the dealer, and they indicated the other bulb would need to be replaced. the dealer in this instance covered the cost of the bulb and labor. i fear that the problem has not been repaired by simply replacing the bulbs, and i will be again driving the car with a faulty headlight, which could lead to an accident in the wrong conditions. *tr

The left headlight of my 2006 audi a4 quattro has this annoying -- and dangerous -- problem: 1. the left headlight flickers 2. it then turns itself off 3. the message left dipped headlight appears 4. the message is changed to a sign indicating that the lightbulb has failed. if i turn the light off (note: we're talking about driving at night here) and turn it back on again, the light will become normal again, for about a few minutes and then the cycle repeats itself. this problem is intermittent. it has been occurring a lot recently with the cold weather. my audi dealer said that audi knows about this problem but doesn't know how to fix it. numerous other individuals are having the same problem as evidenced by postings on user forums. http://www.fixya.com/cars/t593349-audi_a4_left_dipped_headlight_problem. *tr

The xenon headlights of my 2006 audi a4 quattro has this annoying -- and dangerous -- problem: 1. the left or right headlights flicker (the left one was recently fixed) 2. after flickering the headlight will shut off 3. the message left dipped headlight or right dipped headlight appears 4. the message is changed to a sign indicating that the lightbulb has failed. if i turn the light control switch to off (note: we're talking about driving at night here) and turn it back on again, the light will become normal again. the problem occurs more in colder temperatures. this issue is a known issue as many people discuss the problem over the internet. *tr

The right headlight of my 2005.5 audi a4 quattro has this annoying -- and dangerous -- problem: 1. the left headlight flickers 2. it then turns itself off 3. the message left dipped headlight appears 4. the message is changed to a sign indicating that the lightbulb has failed. *tr

Hid light on left side flickers then can fail and go to a dipped status displaying in the console. turning off the lights and back on will restore them. forums cannot isolate the issue to bulb-flash update for headlights-or ballast. just google audi dipped or hid flicker. my concern is that the light make other drivers think your flashing them. its a distraction to other drivers. failure in a corner is dangerous. *tr

The xenon headlights of my 2006 audi a4 quattro has this annoying -- and dangerous -- problem: 1. the left or right headlights flicker (the left one was recently fixed) 2. after flickering the headlight will shut off 3. the message left dipped headlight or right dipped headlight appears 4. the message is changed to a sign indicating that the lightbulb has failed. if i turn the light control switch to off (note: we're talking about driving at night here) and turn it back on again, the light will become normal again, for about a few minutes and then the cycle repeats itself. the problem occurs more in colder temperatures. the dealership has replaced one of these very expensive bulbs, but will not replace the one that is currently causing problems. the car is still under warranty. this issue is a known issue as many people discuss the problem over the internet. in fact, audi of north america is aware of the problem as well because there has been some sort of redesign of the bulb and a tsb has been issued for cars that are less than 1 year old and has less than 12000 miles on it. i would think they would want to recall these cars on their own because it is not safe to have to turn your lights off and on while driving in the dark. *tr

My 2006 audi a4 avant 2.0 has the xenon headlights. one of the lights has been failing intermittently for the past few months. the audi dealership in sunnyvale can't point to the specific problem and wants to charge me $500 to replace the xenon bulb which is not broken. it works after you turn of the light and then on again. it's happening in cold weather mostly late at night or very early in the morning. it works fine otherwise. i suspect that this may be related to the light control blast. a quick search on google reveals hundreds of people complaining about this problem since the car was released but no real solution seems to have been found. those who had the bulb replaced still have the problems. it is a major safety concern to me since my light turns of in the middle of drive when it's dark. i'd like for the dealer to recall this and really fix this problem without making me pay for something that does not solve the problem. *tr

*tr
