Time belt failure at 65k miles while driving 65 mph on highway caused over $5k in repairs. dealer recommended looking at other repair centers because it could not look at the car for 7 days because the backlog of other audi's with same problem. internet search found 10 other timing belt failures ranging from 45k to 98k on similar models. known issue with audi corp of america. *jb

The vw/audi 1.8t engine has been experiencing an alarming number of premature timing belt failures, causing instantaneous power failure and catastrophic valve train damage. (search audiworld.com for timing belt failure.) failures have occurred as low as 45k miles. mine went at 90k miles although the service manual makes no mention of scheduled replacement. if this had happened while passing or on the interstate, a serious accident could have occurred. these vehilcles should be recalled or at least audi should notify the owners of the problem. the timing belts should be replaced to avoid a potential fatal accident. there is also a known timing belt tensioner problem in pre-2000 model year cars that causes failure. *ak
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING - EXHAUST SYSTEM - EMISSION CONTROL - CATALYTIC CONVERTOR

At 51,000 miles i had the catalytic converter replaced on my audi under warranty due to a broken pipe flange. i now have 102,000 on the audi and the same part is broken. audi usa will not replace or repair this part. i feel it must be a defect in the workmanship or materials since a catalytic converter should not be replaced until it is worn out and not before then. this is part of the emissions system and the epa should also know about this. *jb

The abs module is causing the panel brake light to blink and the abs light to be on steady. my complaint is that the charge to repair this is estimated at $750 including $250 labor from our local audi dealer. there is no good reason for this fault to occur, and the repair is quite expensive. i am waiting for audi to order a new board, so i am driving with bad abs brakes, and it is almost december. *jb

Our 1999.5 audi avant quattro vin #waugd28d7xa213020 has passed 80,000 miles. the antilock brake system (abs) controller has failed causing intermittant failure of the abs system. the result is inconsistant and dangerous handling of the vehicle in low traction conditions -- the very conditions audi quattros are purchased for! repair of the system is in excess of 25% of the value of the market car. a search of several internet audi sites revealed that this is a common problem with many current audi models. audi of america refuses to fix this problem under recall.
TIRES - TREAD/BELT
04/28/20072
My car was taken to a local body shop on 4/4/2007 for what we thought was a steering problem. i found out however, that on one of my front tires the tread had completely separated on 50% of the tire! it was the continental 205/60r15 touring contact. i had them replace it with a contipro contact of the same size. three weeks later, my other front tire separated on at least 40% of the tire, with a huge bulge. the tires are less than a year old, with less than 8,000 miles on them! both of the failing tires caused severe steering problems, and both had to be replaced. the incidents came upon very rapidly, and was very unsafe to drive on.*ak

While driving, rear passenger tire blewout without warning. mechanic stated tread was separating because of a bad alignment. body shop that did the alignment gave a print out of the alignment with statistics. *ak. consumer stated the back rear tire was worn out on the inside and outside tread of the tire, all tires have since been replaced.*jb
