Defect Summary | Vehicle description: motorcycles. the seat backrest can be adjusted to two positions, horizontal or vertical. in the horizontal position, the backrest acts as a seat cushion for a rear passenger. in the vertical position, it is used as a backrest for the driver. it is possible for the leaf spring mounting bracket, if overloaded with the backrest in the vertical position, to crack or break. | |||||||||||||||
Consequence Summary | If the bracket were to break, the backrest would detach from its mount, causing the driver to lose his balance, increasing the risk of a crash. | |||||||||||||||

Bmw is conducting a recall (04v-028).an information request(ir)response was not received. upon bmw's receipt of the ir, and after discussions with odi, bmwdetermined that a recall was necessary. on certain motorcycles, the o-ring contained within the fuel line quick-disconnect coupling could become damaged.further, there is also a problem involving crimp-type hose clamps, which can also result in a small fuel leak.dealers will inspect, and if necessary, adjust all crimp-type hose clamps.also all fuel line quick-disconnect couplings will be inspected.if a leak is detected, the quick-disconnect o-ring will be replaced.if damaged, the coupling will be replaced.owner notification is expected to begin during february 2004. |

I was proceeding southbound on us hwy 17 south of orange park, fl, when i observed that the abs warning lights were blinking, indicating a brake failure. as i slowed down for an upcoming traffic light at clay county road 209, i could hear a crunch-crunch-crunch grinding noise coming from the final drive at the rear, and i noticed that i had no braking effectiveness at the rear wheel. i pulled into an empty parking lot and examined the rear wheel, brakes, and final drive assembly. there had been a catastrophic failure of the final drive unit, which coated the rear brake rotor, wheel, and tire with the final drive fluid. i also observed that the wobbling of the assembly had damaged the abs sensor. had it been an emergency stop, abs was rendered inoperative. this is the third final drive failure on this motorcycle. | |||
