In fall of 2004 i began to notice that the anti-lock brakes were not working properly. when coming to a stop they would kick in while i was gradually stopping, then disengage at the last minute, causing me to nearly collide with whatever was in front of me! i drove under these conditions for a short time, nearly causing an accident on several occasions. subsequently, my husband removed the fuse to disarm the anti-lock brakes. i was in the process of investigating what might have caused the problem and how much it should cost, since i do not entirely trust the dealership (classic chevrolet) to be honest with me, based on past experiences. please refer to the investigation announced on may 2, 2005 which does not mention the chevrolet astro van (2000).

Have brought van in 4 times in 4 years about electrical problems. smelling wires burning. have gone through 6 batteries in 4 years. replaced alternator. radio/cd has been replaced. new cd stoped working after 1 week of being replaced. dealer refuses to replace again. radio, overhead digital temp & misc gages goes out, speedometor, battery, fuel, and odomoter quits, only the oil still works. abs breaking probems, pedel to floor, have ran intersections due to this. have had minor dings to bumper because it rolled to stops at low speeds. loud clunk in rear when stopped too. dealer refused to call it a lemon. refused to help fix because its a lease. also handle over passenger airbag disintegrated in 3rd year, and now the driver arm rest is split in 4th year. *ak

My rear hatch door of my 2000 astro van will not open. all of the locks on my van are not working as they should but at least i can use the inside door handles to get in and out. the hatch has no inside door release so in case of an accident i would never be able to get myself out of the back if that were the only way out. also, if you are braking and hit a bump the brakes will not work. i have had several close calls because i could not stop the van because of a bumpy intersection and the brakes not holding.*ak

I have a 4 year old chevy astro van with a kelsey hayes ebc unit. recently the abs light started coming on from time to time when the engine had been running for a while, but it would go off when the vehicle was turned off and restarted cold. i had my brake system checked and there was nothing wrong with the brakes. the code indicated a bad relay in the computer control system. the problem is that it causes the abs light to come on and when that happens i have no abs working. this could cause a safety issue under certain braking conditions. the light doesn't come on all the time so the question is do i pay over $900 for something that i believe to be a manufacturing defect or do i take a chance that when i need my brakes that the abs system will work. as of now, i have not replaced the part. the dealer indicated that the part # was 12478045 . this part cannot be purchased except through a dealer. it is their product.

I have had many electrical problems with my chevrolet astro van. 2000 year model. i have only 60,000 miles and it's been in for changing of oxygen sensor twice a new catalytic converteer installed in the first 4000 miles. at 7000 miles i had to have some connector replaced because my van would go for about 5 miles and then just die on me, like no getting fuel. now for the past 6 months i am having a problem with my brake and abs lite coming on and when i put on the brakes they grab and let go and it takes a long time to stop. i have taken it to many places and everyone tells me they can't find nothing wrong. i had it hooked up to the see what the computer fault was and it says the relay. the relay is 800.00 dollars and the mechanic says it may still not be the problem.

I read in the local paper that the nhtsa has opened an investigation of general motors antilock braking systems. my chevrolet astro van has experienced the same problem - antilock braking engaging at low speeds due to corrosion in and around 1 or more of the axle speed sensors. i removed the antilock main fuse to de-energize the system. this is not a permanent fix but does remove the immediate danger. i know of another astro, owned by some close friends, with the identical problem.

Tl- the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet astro. the contact stated when they are attempting to stop the vehicle on uneven pavement, the anti-lock brake system kicks and makes it hard to stop the vehicle. the contact stated they have been in three accidents because of the brake failure. the contact stated the abs light comes on when the failure occurs. the first accident occurred when the contact ran into the rear of a vehicle. the contact was traveling 45 mph h and had to stop quickly, which cause the vehicles abs to kick in and the vehicle skid into the vehicle in front of them. the contact was traveling much slower when the other accident occurred. the failure mileage was 80,000 and the current mileage 151,000.rl

Tl* - the contact stated that 2000 chevrolet astro ls' locks failed, not allowing her to gain entrance to the vehicle on october 18, 2006. the failure was due to the door lock actuator melting. the contact stated that the vehicle was towed to eagle automotive. the mechanic replaced the actuator, but removed the relay because the circuit was continuously closed. the mechanic said that if they didn't remove the relay it would melt the actuator again. the contact stated that she believed the failure will reoccur. the contact stated that she went to monument chevrolet and asked for a print out of the maintenance repairs. the contact found that this vehicle has been repaired on april 3, 2001 for back door locks and again on february 14, 2002 for the sliding door. the actuator assembly on the right was also replaced on the driver door. the contact stated that the driver door and the sliding door were the only doors on the vehicle that had functioning locks. the contact stated that all of the other door lock handles werestuck and couldn't be pulled to lock or unlock the doors. she has tried to get resolution from the manufacturer, and they said that because it was not towed to a dealership they would not reimburse her for any repairs. the manufacture was given a file #1-438966317. the contact also sent pictures to the manufacturer of the burnt out actuators and with a certified letter.*ak the consumer stated the brakes failed, however she was told nothing was wrong. the consumer was told the brakes were designed to fail on uneven pavement under 25 mph. the troqued converter burned out. the locks had an electrical short. updated 03/19/07. *jb

My 2000 chevrolet astro van with all wheel drive intermittently fails to stop at low speeds due to inappropriate activation of the anti lock braking system. this condition has nearly resulted in several accidents that jeopardized the safety of people and property, such as when traveling in parking lots and crowded city streets. the abs system failure does not register a service code, and the problem was not recognized by service department at the local gm dealership, who replaced transfer case fluid in the absence of having a clue. through self diagnosis, the problem was confirmed to be the abs sytem because the brakes operate normally when the fuse is removed from the wiring block slot labeled abs. due to the absence of any physical damage to the vehicle, and the failure of the vehicles diagnostic system to detect this proble, it is clearly a defect in the vehicle or components design or construction. owners should not have to pull fuses on safety system in order for the brakes to work when necessary. nhtsa should evaluate the aggregate number of complaints already issued with this problem, and understand that the gm trained service technicians are not helping owners remedy or understand this defect exists. a recall notice should be issued. *tr

Upon approach to an intersection, i began to slow down early because the road was covered with ice and snow. the vehicle began to slide a little, so i pressed firmly on the brake to engage the abs brakes. i heard a very loud snap! and the brake pedal was gone from beneath my foot. the vehicle proceeded into the intersection, narrowly missing becoming broadsided from the left. i swung the steering wheel to the right, engaged the parking brake (which did little to slow forward momentum) and waited while the vehicle rolled to a stop, inches from a telephone pole. *** upon being towed to a dealership for repair, it was discovered that the problem was catastrophic failure of the master cylinder component in the braking system. the metal casting has a crack which is almost 6 inches long which runs along the underside of the part for almost its full length. the metal wall of the cylinder has been extruded by the force of the explosion which occurred during braking. *** i have the part and i am willing to share photographs of the problem. *** it is interesting to note that a chevrolet representative, contacted after the fact, told me that this failure was most likely due to bad braking habits.
