Tl*the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet astro van. while the cruise control was set at speeds of 65 mph, the brake pedal was applied to disengage the cruise control. however, there was no response. the vehicle continued to abnormally accelerate while the brakes were applied. there was an extremely loud roaring noise coming from the engine with an increase in the rpms. the vehicle was rapidly approaching a traffic light and the gear was shifted into neutral position. the engine was turned off. the vehicle was coasted to a stop with very limited braking power. after several moments, the vehicle was able to restart. the vehicle was able to resume operation. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the cpu (central processing unit) and optical wheel sensors were intermittently faulty which required replacement. the sensors were cleaned to correct the problem. the identical failure occurred on a separate occasion. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer that advised the replacement of the entire cpu. the vehicle has not been repaired. the failure and current mileages were 130,000. updated 4/26/10 *cn updated 06/17/10*jb

Dt: the consumer stated his wife put her foot on the brake and it did not stop; it accelerated when she hit the brake and she hit two parked cars on 7-23-05. she was going approx. 3-5 mph. this is not the first time this has happened. previously, they had felt some pulsating in the pedal, but it became progressively worse. this is the first time they have felt it accelerate. no lights came on prior to this or previously. this occurred during normal braking, on a dry road. *jb

Uncontrolled engine acceleration: without warning, the engine revved to full throttle. the car continued to accelerate even with foot off gas pedal and full brakes applied. the cause was identified as a broken accelerator cable. the breakage occurred near the gas pedal. the car had 48,000 miles. the gas pedal had been jerky intermittently on initial depression for the preceding year. dealership servicing attributed this to a dirty throttle body, which was cleaned and deferred. but 6 weeks later, this break in the accelerator cable occurred. *ak
