 1) noticed that my brakes would pressurize when coming to a stop as if the anti-lock brakes were activating. i've experienced normal activation before on ice, snow, and loose gravel so i knew what it was doing. it began happening a lot so i took it to the dealer (basil chevrolet, wellsville, ny) on 9/24/07. they replaced the rotors, pads and told me road test ok...on road test did experience antilock problem. only once felt - unable to verify. 2) took my van home and was seeing the problem as much if not more so than before. was quite upset that after spending over $400 dollars on the auto, i still didn't have the problem fixed that i took the van in for. complained about it to the dealer and they said they could bring it in to clean the sensors for me but couldn't get me in until next week. the very next day the problem arose while parking my vehicle at work. i lost all braking ability and smashed into the rear end of a truck. no damage to the truck at all but extensive damage occurred to the front of my vehicle. smashed grill, bumper, hood, headlight, and possibly more that i haven't identified yet. got stopped by the local police for the headlight issue. 3) nothing done yet to fix the problem. i left the van at the aforementioned dealer for repair work on the brakes and the headlight. hoping to pick it up today. *tr

2001 chevy astro -- does not stop when brakes are applied. just keeps sliding. only way to fix is to remove the fuse for the abs brakes. if fuse is in, when brakes are applied, the vehicle shutters and growls and just continues to slide and the vehicle does not stop. this happens when you are traveling at slow speeds such as coming to a stop or pulling into parking spaces. ---very dangerous--thank god husband is a mechanic and realized that taking the fuse out would stop this problem, but causes it so that there is no abs. *nm

Tl* - the contact owns a 2001 chevrolet astro van. on several occasions when the driver applied the brakes the vehicle was unable to stop. the current mileage and the failure mileage was 27,000 miles. the first failure resulted in a crash into a fence. the second incident was a of couple months later, the driver drove through the garage door after applying the brakes and failing to stop the vehicle. the contact was unable to get out of the van at that time. the contact attempted to drive the van in reverse ,and noticed that the pedal's placement was in an awkward position, it seemed higher than usual. the contact was driving in a storm and experienced a similar incident with the brakes. the most recent incident occurred december 28, 2006 when the contact attempted to place the vehicle in reverse and the engine accelerated. the contact applied the brakes and the van didn't stop. the contact researched he schematics and noted that the abs system could be affected by a function in the steering system and it could lock. the contact used a hydraulic jack, and when he started the car the wheels spun; however when he put the van back on the ground and applied the brakes there was no incident or failure in the brakes at that time. the contact stated the general motors manual , volume 1 of 2 gm-401 for the astro and mini van, page 5-4 under hydraulics list detailed information that could be related. *ak

I have a 2001 astro awd that was taken to meineke brake care center where the brake system was analyzed. the front driver (abs) wheel sensor needed replaced. note prior to having this done the (abs) light came on therefore i knew that something was wrong because at a very slow stop the brake would release itself and would allow the vehicle to continue to move. after meineke analyzed the problem i had the brake sensor replaced, and the (abs) light went off and the brakes seemed to be working normal again. however just one week ago i was driving and came to a very slow stop, mind you the light (abs) is off and the vehicle would not stop and the brakes released all the way causing me to run into a fence. however, luckily no on was hurt or property damaged caused but without warning this could have been much more serious traveling behind another vehicle or large truck. the brakes has once again been analyzed for problems and the sensor that was replaced shows no issues. can this possibly be a manufacturing issue that no one has reported? please advise with any information regarding this matter, it would be much appreciated. *jb

Abs not stopping the vehicle at a slow rate of speed. vehicle is still moving but the abs sensor thinks the wheels have stopped their for not stopping the vehicle when the brakes are applied. the chevy silverado's were recalled for this problem but chevy has not recalled this van which has the same braking system as the silverado. it has almost caused several accidents with our van. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated while applying brake pressure, at a variety of low speeds, the brake pedal went completely to the floor and there was a complete loss of braking. the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who replaced the speed sensors and the hydro booster. the speed sensors were worn and the booster was leaking fluid. the repair was completed in february and the vehicle has operated normally since that time. updated 7/3/2006 - *nm

No crash or injuries, just a dangerous situation and a bad financial situation. meals on wheels operates four all-wheel drive chevrolet astro vans - years 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002. in each vehicle, at least one (and sometimes both) abs speed wheel sensors have gone bad, causing a very unsafe driving situation - at speeds of 5-7 mph. this is the same safety hazard that chevrolet recently issued a recall for its full-size 4-wheel drive pickup trucks. why can't the owners of astro vans receive the same courtesy as owners of the trucks? we've spent more than $2,000 to fix these problems - truck owners are getting their money back - we want our money as well. there must be other owners who have had accidents, or have spent as much as $800 per wheel to get the problem fixed. *nm

Dt: the contact stated that the brakes design caused rust to build up on the outside of the rotors. he felt that the front brake pads were not wide enough to cover the rotors. while applying the brakes they were spongy, and there was a slight vibration in the brake pedal and the steering wheel. heard a grinding noise coming from underneath the vehicle. when the brakes were applied they did not work properly. he contact had to panic brake before the brakes actually stopped the vehicle. this did not happen every time the brakes were applied, but it happened too many times to have a record. the dealer stated that the contact was not driving the vehicle enough, and that he was using the brakes too often. the dealer maintained that the brake pads and rotors needed to be replaced. *ak

Dt: the contact owns a 2001 chevrolet astro van. the contact stated that there was unwanted activation of the abs system. when the contact applied the brakes at low speeds the abs activated and did not stop the vehicle. this resulted in extended stopping distance. the vehicle was at a dealership, and they could not find the cause of the problem. the dealership could feel the problem, but did not know how to remedy it. the dealership road tested the vehicle and duplicated the problem and the fault would have to be more consistent to offer repairs. the consumer spoke with a mechanic, and he stated that recall 05v379000 was issued for a 2001 chevrolet suburban regarding the abs. the contact stated that this vehicle was experiencing the same symptoms as indicated in the recall. the manufacturer confirm ed that this type of vehicle was not included in the recall. *ak updated 01/04/06. *jb

At about 52,000 miles my 2001 chevrolet astro began having abs problems. abs would activate at very slow speeds. almost involved in several minor crashes due to car not stopping while entering a parking space or in rush hour traffic are pulling up to intersections. abs kicks in and instead of vehicle stopping it keeps pulsing the brakes as if i were traveling faster. have not had problem examined by chevrolet dealer at this point. i noticed that chevrolet is planning a recall for some of its trucks and suv's for the identical problem i am experiencing however my model is not currently being considered for the recall. *jb

The abs on my 2001 chev astro are faulty, similar to the investigation on the pickups and suvs. at slow speeds, like in parking lots or at stop signs, the abs activates, the pedal becomes too hard to push, and i cannot stop at all. this happens even on dry roads. the repair is over $1000 with aftermarket parts and over $2000 with gm original parts. i disconnected the front abs sensors.

Brakes have had intermittent problems since new. returned first time when left front locked up on dry, smooth pavement panic stop. jerked wheel from hand and turned van sideways. this is after slight intermittent pulling from time van was new. numerous trips (5) to dealer has failed to fix problem. now additional problem of no braking action while attempting slow stop has resulted in running into intersection with oncoming traffic. this occurred while trying to stop from approximately 15mph. applying the brakes resulted in no slow down for a short amount of time. it finally stopped with the front bumper in the intersection as i attempted to apply the parking brake to stop. gm's service has said that until it occurrs while it is in the shop, there is nothing else they will do. they did say they hoped i didn't have an accident because of their brakes.*ak

The abs brake system is unpredictable. if one side or the other is in loose gravel, rough surface, or slick surface and brakes are applied hard (like a child running out in front of you), the opposite side will lock up and cause the vehicle to slide in that direction. this problem is intermittent and only happens part of the time. likewise, when slowing down (as in approaching a stop sign) the brakes will pull the vehicle across a crowned centerline if firm grip is not maintained on the steering wheel. again, this only occurs intermittently and only after the vehicle has been driven a distance and is warmed-up. also, the vehicle will lock-up one front wheel (usually the left front) during a panic stop on dry, smooth pavement and either pull the steering wheel out of your hands or slide the vehicle sideways. this also happens intermittently. the dealer has replaced the left side caliper, replaced the right side caliper, and replaced the abs module on the kelsey hayes abs system. gm now says that the vehicle is operating at manufacturer's spec's. i feel the van is unsafe because you don't know what is going to happen when you hit the brake pedal--will it stop straight, or pull left, or pull right, or (in fast panic stop) lock up one side and slide in that direction.*ak
