Defect Summary | Vehicle description: chassis cabs. the tapered hole in the drag link end that attaches to the pitman arm tapered ball stud may be machined too deep causing the hole to be oversized. a drag link with an oversized hole may not seat the pitman arm tapered ball when assembled. this could cause higher than normal friction between components during operation, and possibly result in joint separation or a broken ball stud.
Consequence Summary | If the joint separated or the ball stud brake while the vehicle was moving, steering control would be lost.
Corrective Summary | Dealers will inspect the steering linkage assembly and, if necessary, replace the drag link and the pitman arm.

The preliminary evaulation is being upgraded.during the ea odi will limitits investigation to only those vehicles equipped with a hydro-boost system, which provides power assist to the braking and steering sytems.vaccuum brake booster vehicles are excluded.odi hasexpanded the scope of the ea to include model years2003 and 2004, asduring the pe, odi learned that the hydroboast pumps were modified in febraury 2004.therefore,odi has expanded the scope to include the additional model years.odi's is concerned because thisisa sudden failure that affects two critical systems of the vehicle, brakes and steering, at the same time.the ability of the operator to handle the dual failures is a concern. further, these vehicles tend to be work vehicles, with some over 10,000 pounds gvwr and many equipped to pull large trailers.dual failures of heavily loaded vehicles and vehicles pulling trailers further increases the safety risk.odi plans to conduct testing to quantify the braking and steering performance degradation and the impact on safe vehicle control, when a hydroboast pump fails.

Gm is conducting a recall on all subject vehicles build between may 1999 and october 14, 1999.significant changes were incorporated into production in early october 1999, and vehicles built after that date have lower warranty failure rates.the complaint and warranty data appear to support the effectiveness of these changes. gm made additional changes in november 1999, february 2000, may 2001, and february 2004.odi will continue to monitor this problem and will take further action, if warranted, in the future.for further technical details see the attached engineering analysis report.

We have purchased a chevy 3500hd dump truck. we have known this truck for a few years and the brake lights have been stuck on and no signals for two years. we were told about the recall for the multi-function switch for other 2000 truck models, i.e. the 2000 blazer, because of this situation. we feel that our truck should be included in the recall because it has the same problems as the other trucks made by chevy in the same year and suspect it is the same part. we have been told that the part is $400 and $250 to replace in labor. we don't feel that we should have to go through the cost and then get reimbursed for the cost when it is finally recalled. in the process of finding out what the problem was, hundreds of dollars have been spent on useless fixes because there is no recall for this particular truck and no one thought about that particular switch being bad until we were talking to a blazer owner of the same year that told us about the recall on his truck. we investigated a little more and there are more than the 2000 blazer with this part being recalled. *tr

The vehicle was weighed with a medium sized vehicle in tow and the weight was 12140, as per gm the trucks max gvw rating is 11,000, the vehicle was being used overweight of specs which caused premature brake wear, the vehicle was sold to the consumer with the understanding that the vehicle would be used as a tow truck, the consumer believes that gm is selling trucks with wrecker provisions but are too light to be tow trucks or they are selling trucks with defective brake systems, on one occasion the vehicle brake pedal went to the floor while the driver was braking and failed causing the truck to rear end another vehicle. nlm
