Defect SummaryOn certain passenger vehicles equipped with electronic column lock systems (ecl), when the ignition switch is turned to lock, the ecl system prevents turning of the steering system. when the vehicle is started, the ecl unlocks the steering system. the vehicle is designed so that if the column fails to unlock when the vehicle is started and the customer tries to drive, the fuel supply will be shut off so that the vehicle cannot move when the vehicle cannot be steered. if voltage at the powertrain control module is low or interrupted, however, the fuel shut off may not occur and the vehicle can be accelerated while the steering system is locked. also when the control system shows that the ecl is unlocked and the vehicle is being driven, the lock pin location can vary. depending on the location of the lock plate relative to the switch transition point, there could then be contact between the lock plate and pin causing the steering to lock while driving .
Consequence SummaryIf this occurs, a crash could occur without warning.
Corrective SummaryOn vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, the dealer will disable the steering column lock by removing the column lock plate. when the ignition key is removed, the transmission shifter will lock but the steering column will not lock. on vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, the dealer will reprogram the powertrain control module, perform a dimensional check of the column lock and, if necessary, replace the lock plate. the steering column on these vehicles will continue to lock when the key is removed. owner notification to owners of 1997 vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions began on april 26, 2004. owners of 1998 through 2004 vehicles (except 1997-1998 manual transmission vehicles) will be notified beginning on august 2, 2004. the remaining owners (1997-1998 manual transmission vehicles) will be notified later in 2004, when parts are available. owners should contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438.

Service bulletin 05081 just performed on my corvette to fix a steering column lock problem. after work performed i get a message to remove key and wait 10 sec. tgm completed a service bulletin on my car that leaves me with a car that stalls immediately after starting. in the many years i owned the car i had only gotten the message once, which related to the steering column lock. now since the service bulletin was done to fix the problem i get the message every other time i start the car. i feel as though the car is unsafe to drive i have already had one occasion where i did not see the info message. i proceeded to pull out of a parking space only to have the car stall and almost get hit by a truck. fortunately the truck was able to stop before a collision occurred. the truck driver was not very patient and proceeded to give me a few choice words while i had to go through the famous 10 second drill 2 times before i could get the car to run. what i really expect is a service bulletin that fixes a problem not causes one i now have an unsafe car. my wife refuses to drive it for fear it will stall when moving from a parked position into traffic. this needs to be addressed immediately. the car has stalled 3 times in the last week! very unsafe. *tr

Gm states that the recall on my 1997 corvette has previously been resolved, when i prior had no acknowledgment of the recall. after persistently giving them the recall number they finally admitted to the recall applying to my vehicle, but stated that the recall had been performed to specifications, when in fact all they did was reset the computer for a temporary fix. they said that the recall was closed and all cost incurred would be my out of pocket expense. i really feel that a recall for this severe of an occurrence should stay open until the problem is completely remedied. this is a very dangerous faulty part that the government should require an open recall on. *jb

On 12/21/04 i brought my 1997 corvette to the dealership to get serviced for the #4006 electronic column lock system recall. last thursday (8/11/05) my vehicle's steering lockup up while moving out of my parking spot. it was towed in to byers dublin chevrolet dealership (614-793-4800) the next day. i was told that this was not covered by this recall and that i needed to purchase another steering lock actuator for $475. i have read on various newsgroups that this type of lockup can happen over and over again if the lock plate is still in place. i have requested to the dealership to just remove this lock pin and i would be happy to pay for their labor to do so, but they refuse to do it. i've talked to chevrolet corporate (ticket # 1-355691956) and they still refuse to put in a bypass or to remove this lock altogether. can you give me some advise on how to resolve this so that i am not driving around in a car that could have the steering column lock up at any given time? it is a hazard for me and a liability to chevrolet. thanks, -kevin. *jb

I own a 1997 corvette with a manual transmission that has had two instances of the electronic clolumn lock system failing. the first failure occurred in june of 2000 and gm replaced the module at no charge. the second failure occurred in august of 2003. i understand that gm has done a recall on 1997 corvette's for this problem (recall campaign #04v060). i wrote a letter to gm requesting information and reinbursement for my costs due to the failure of the ecm in august of 2003, but was told by the gm customer service center that my particular vehicle was not affected by the recall. i don't underdstand how there can be a recall for 1997 corvette's that excludes a vehicle car that has had two instances of the recalled part failing. the car only had 32,000 miles on it, the second time the part failed. from reading the recall notice, there is a procedure to prevent further lock ups of the steering column, but appratently my car is not covered. i would like you to look into lthis matter and force gm to include all 1997 manual transmission corvettes as part of the recall campaign. *ak

My 1997 c-5 corvette has a problem with the steering wheel locking up. the first time it happen when my wife had it at work, when she went to leave she started out but could not steer. the dashboard reader display said column failure. when checking the owners manual we found column failure and it said to have vehicle towed to repair shop for service. the vehicle was repaired at my expense because general motors would not admit to a problem. there is an active recall for 1998-2002 c-5 corvettes for steering column lockup, but they said that mine was caused by a different part and they would not honor the recall. on tuesday 10 june the steering column locked up again this time while my wife was driving. she had just pulled into traffic and heard a click at which time the steering locked up. fortunately she was able to stop without incident. the car had to sit part way in the road until a wrecker was dispatched to tow it in again. the service dealer has had the car since that time and we still don't know when or if it will be fixed. *jb ref. in ea02-031 *cjs

Last summer, while backing out of a parking spot, my column lock failed to release and nearly caused a collision w/2 other cars. i called the local chev. dealer and they informed me that my corvette didnt fall within certain vin numbers for that recall for that very same problem and that it shouldnt have that problem. well, it does have this potentially dangerous problem, but gm wont fix their faulty design/parts and want to charge me $500 minimum to fix! so i had the car towed home, ate the $100 flat bed tow bill, and called other gm dealers-all deny the problem on my particular car. can anybody help me? if i were backing onto a busy road, it could have been disasterous. my car is a 1997 c5 corvette vin# 1g1yy22g8v5105342 w/approx only 30,000 miles. thanks, r.g.

My steering wheel column locked when my car was parked. it had to be towed to the nearest dealer bay chevrolet to be fix. when it locked the computer or (dic) read service column locked. i was unable to move my car. the car started but i could not use my steering wheel to guide the car. lucky for me i was parked at home. if i was on the road and this happen , i hate to even think about the loss of my life and the others on our highways. this problem came without warning. the dealer said that an actuator failed. some reports on the net has indocated that this locked steering unit fail s even whilel driving the car. this is a danger and a hazard. please to demanded that gm recall this safety defect before someone loss their life needlessly. *ak ref. in ea02-031 *cjs

On various occasions, the steering wheel locked up after starting the car. a computer read out says, service column lock, and prior to that, the read out says, pull key, wait ten seconds. this happened in a parking lot and at home in the garage. i took it to the chevrolet dealer in our area (corona) and they had no idea what i was talking about and they couldn't get it to lock up. i read and heard from a fellow corvette owner that there might be a recall in the future on this problem. i thought i would get my complaint in. fortunately, it hasn't occurred while driving but it does concern me. nlm ref. in ea02-031 *cjs

There was a gm recall for 98-2000. though 97 an other later year model have the same problem. the part was replaced in june 2001 and chevrolet dealership won't even guarantee or are cautious about gm's defect in my car. i have not paid because i am seeking fairness and they don't want to do anything to the car. gm's defect in their corvettes has happened to many. quote the dealership it will be $384 or if you want to take it and deal with it somewhere else. please respond promptly. i know an issue was sent out to 98-2000 but the same parts have been used on 97 and some 2001 manual models it is very unfair.*ak

The steering column has locked in place (preventing any steering of the wheel) on four separate occasions, and has resulted in my having to tow the vehicle to the dealership so they can fix it. i understand that the 1998-2000 model year corvette's have all been recalled for this exact same issue. the only thing that differentiates the 1997 from the 1998 is the vin number. the 1997 should also have been part of the same recall, as evidenced by the four failures on my vehicle. i would hate to think what would happen if the steering column locked in place while i was driving at a high rate of speed. thanks for your review of this. harry bizios. *ak ref. in ea02-031 *cjs

My car was parked outside of a grocery store. when i returned to my car i started the engine and the dic panel read steering column locked, pull key and wait 10 seconds. i tried to get the car to unlock the steering column for 1 hr. i called for help and he also tried for approximately 2 hours. the car had to be towed to the dealership. jerry hamm chevrolet would not cover the repair expenses even though i notified them of the 13 complaints that are currently listed on your website. the repairs cost me $418.00 plus $65.00 for towing. chevrolet needs to be held accountable for this malfunctioning part. i am handling my dispte through arbitration and will take them to court if necessary.*ak ref. in ea02-031 *cjs

This is the third incident of this type on this car. the steering column locks up on the vehicle making the car inoperable. this is a well known defect on this car that could cause a serious accident if it were to occur while driving. my car is currently at the dealership for the second time within 6 weeks for the same problem. the dealer doesn't know what cuaes the problem, and consequently how to fix it. gm barley acknowledges the problem even exists, saying they have been working on a fix for the problem. they don't seem to perceive it as a safety issue. i feel as though this common defect needs to be the subject of a recall by the manufacturer so that the owners of these cars can feel safe while driving them.*ak ref. in ea02-031 *cjs
