PE08056GENERAL MOTORS CORP.09/17/200801/14/2009ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL MALFUNCTION
On september 17, 2008, odi opened preliminary evaluation pe08-056 to investigate allegations of inappropriate activation of the electronic stability control (esc) system in model year (my) 2005 and 2006 chevrolet corvette vehicles.some reports received by odi and some reports to general motors (gm) contained in gm's response to pe08-056 allege that the esc system malfunctioned causing a sudden and inappropriate braking action without illumination of the brake lights and causing the vehicle to swerve left or right unexpectedly. gm issued a technical service bulletin in january 2006, later revised in october 2007 (bulletin no. 06-02-35-002b) concerning esc problems in my 2005 and 2006 chevrolet corvette vehicles with the telescoping steering wheel option.the bulletin was intended to correct a fretting corrosion problem with the steering wheel position sensor connector c202. an engineering analysis has been opened (ea09-002) to continue to asses the scope, frequency, and safety-related consequences of the alleged defect.

On april 26, 2010, at nhtsa's request following this investigation, general motors submitted a defect information report to nhtsa to correct a defect associated with the vehicle stability control (vsc) system in approximately 40,000 model year (my) 2005 and 2006 chevrolet corvette vehicles (nhtsa recall no. 10v-172).according to the report, these vehicles may have a problem with the steering wheel position sensor (swps) connector created by a fretting condition in the connector (small movement of the pins back and forth creating a residue build up) which could change the electrical resistance and corrupt the information signal to the vsc computer.the vsc system uses the information from the swps to calculate the driver's intended vehicle direction; this information is cross referenced to sensors that tell the system which direction the vehicle is actually going and the system will, if it determines a variance indicating the vehicle is in a over-steer or under-steer condition, reduce throttle control and apply braking to make a correction in vehicle direction towards what the system believes is the driver's intended path.gm dealers will inspect the swps connector of recalled vehicles and, if necessary, install a terminal position assurance clip to the connector.gm has advised nhtsa that its position is that the inappropriate activations of the vsc system do not present an unreasonable risk to safety because gm believes that the activations are low in occurrence, a rare set of conditions would need to be present, the driver has the ability to maintain direction control if the alleged condition were to occur, and that there are no reports of injuries.nhtsa does not agree.based on interviews with complainants and testing performed at the nhtsa vehicle research and testing center in east liberty, ohio, odi believes that the majority of the unwarranted activations of the vsc system occur when turning, in such scenarios as travelling highway entrance or exit ramps or in street traffic conditions.complainants report the effect produced by the malfunction of the vsc system is sudden unexpected braking and in some cases a sudden unexpected change in vehicle direction which some complainants indicate was sufficient to cause a movement into an adjoining lane of traffic or in some cases into curbing or stationary objects.during the vsc event the brake lights of the corvette are not illuminated, depriving trailing traffic from indication that braking is occurring and some complainants indicate the braking effect can be severe and last up to 10 seconds in length.based on available information odi counts four crashes due to a malfunction of the vsc system; gm is counting one crash due to the problem.in these circumstances nhtsa believes the defect presents an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety, and so advised gm when requesting this recall.this investigation is closed based on gm's recall.

Went out to drive my 2005 corvette, turned into an office park to turn around and the front brake(s) applied on their own and the engine reduced power.i also heard some grinding which i believe were the brakes engaging, felt like i was driving thru molasses.this is a known issue--nhtsa action number either pe08056 or ea09-002.i had the message service active handling on my dash before but no brake locking..very un-nerving.i shut the car down and turned off the traction control and it resolved for now.i will be contacting chevrolet for recall considerations and hopefully some resolution.thank god for corvette forums or i wouldn't of known about this.-thankyou.  On may 2010 i received a safety recall notice #10118 for my 2005 chevy corvette, that there was a problem with the active handling system. i brought it to the chevy dealer and they put a plastic clip on a wire connection. recently the service active in may ohandling system light will appear and the brakes will apply by themselves and the car does a involuntary nose dive. i shut the car off and it might not happen again for 2 more weeks or so. i contacted chevy with my problem and spoke to [xxx] @ 866-790-5600 [xxx] he told me they needed to take the car to ed morse chevrolet and have it checked out at my expense. they were only responsible to fix this problem one time! i told [xxx] that it was not fixed properly the first time and brought to chevy ed morse sawgrass (954-514-3440) as the dealer requested. when i got there as per the appointment all they did was trying to sell me a new corvette! please help...i don't feel safe to drive my car like this, and at this point i don't really know what to do anymore...  Tl- the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet corevtte. the contact stated that while driving the vehicle at 70 mph the brakes engaged on their own. the contact stated that this happened a few times while making a left or right turn as well. the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and they only repaired a clip on the wires in the steering column because they stated it was being pinched. the contact stated this did not correct the problem. the contact stated that after that the service active handling system light illuminated on the instrument panel. the vin was not available. the failure mileage was 25,000 and the current mileage was 33,000.rl

I was driving my car on the freeway and was changing lanes and when i changed gears to accelerate, all of a sudden i got a service active handling message appear out of nowhere and i felt my car jerk a little bit while driving. i did take the car in before to have a clip (service recall) placed on my steering wheel to prevent the message from coming, but it now seems like it only comes when i accelerate too quickly at freeway speeds. champion chevrolet in houston (off beltway 8) has seen this car multiple times for this message in the past, yet i still get it occassionally. i just want my car to be safe.

Traveling on interstate highway with cruise control on at 68 mph the left front brake locked up causing car to turn left and rear end start to swing around. a moment later brake is released and i regain control of vehicle. chime and light on dash go on and stated service active handling. the next day i took vehicle to local dealer they advised i needed a steering wheel position sensor and a yaw sensor for a cost of $1100.00. my concern is after i replace these sensors what happens the next time they fail and a front brake locks up. shouldn't this be a fail safe system. when it fails a light should come on to warn me but not try to wreck me. contacted chevrolet customer service and they then put me in touch with the local chevrolet district office. all i got from them was they cut the estimate to $550.00. they would not address the safety factor of locking one front wheel. there was a recall last year with the same symtoms of one front brake locking. i had the car serviced last year for this. it dealt with wiring in the steering column. they put a clip on it to stop chaffing. dealer said this is not related to my current problem.

Service active handling system light came on, system applied right front brake causing the car to swerve and turn abruptly to the right. luckily there was no other car in the next lane.

Car spun the back tires when making a right hand turn in front of on coming traffic. what happened next was i took my foot off the gas pedal and corrected the car at the same time the active handing applied the front brakes to lockup and would not disengage. i messed with the brake pedal for about 30 seconds & they disengages & i went about 200 feet going straight & the right front brake applied to lockup & the same thing i had to mess with the brake pedal & it released. i never shut the car off & as i resumed driving i could feel the steering was not right it felt like the variable assist steering though the car was going way fast (the steering was way to heavy). i went about 2 miles like this and it did not change. i pulled over & shut the car off & restarted it & the problem was gone. as this was happening the dic was displaying service active handling. that was the only time this has happened to me. it has not happened again. nothing has been done to fix it yet.

I was driving my 2005 corvette in traffic and realized i need to be in the next line to make the next turn. i was stopped at a red light and there was no traffic in the lane next to me, so i turned the wheel sharply to the right and gave it a liitle gas. as i was straightening out the car shook violenlty, it felt like all four brakes where locking up and releasing randomly. i was able to pull over and come to a complete stop, but the car was still shaking. the active handling active was on the info center. i shut the car off and restarted it and everything was fine again. i took the car to the chevy dealership and they did something with steering wheel position sensor.

Initially car was intermittently not starting. dic indicator stated steering wheel was locked. on march 11, 2011, i was driving through a parking lot the steering wheel locked up while i was driving the vehicle. upon my research 1997-2004 models were recalled for this issue. models 2006-2010 the feature - steering column lock was not installed on the cars. my concern is 2005 models have not been recalled and could cause possible deaths of owners and or other members of the public.

2005 / c6 corvette, service active handling message displayed, serched internet and found information about wiring connector clip for steer wheel senser, went to dealer and picked up and installed the comb for the connector and fixed wiring harness so it would not move when steering columu was cycled in & out . this didn't fix the problem, when going to work at about 40 mph and turning left a little the left front brake deployed and pulled me in to the left on coming lane. i took the car to a gm dealer the tech read the codes and said it needed a new steering wheel senser he installed the new senser and said that should fix it after about one or two days the service active handleing message came on again so i started turning off the traction control and active handling, after some time i forgot too turn off a/h a couple of times and found it wasn't flagging active handling message any more then went on a road trip and got into the wake up bumps on the edge of the road this started it to turn on a/h message again, while at my destination and going for breakfast one morning and not turning off the a/h the car did the left front brake thing again and put me in the oncoming lane again . this car is very dangerous. i will take to dealer again. i still have the old steering wheel senser.

I just entered the freeway and traffic was slow 40 to 45 mph. i moved from far right to center lane then from center to left lane. when i moved from center to left i was traveling between 45 and 50 mph when the rear of the car began to slide out of control. when i but did not understand why as the roads where dry and clear. as i tried to regain control the car did not respond and continued to slide completely out of control 180 degree and slid sideways into a wall of plowed ice and snow in the left shoulder and flip on its roof. the loss of understanding of how this happened has given me much anguish as i know i had the traction control handling on, until i found out about a recall having to do with the steering and handling a few months later.

The product safety recall # n100118 service active handling system calls for a clip to be installed to fix the problem. in some cases that does not fix the problem. i had the clip replaced and still continued to have the recall problem. i took the car back in and now i was told by the dealer that my steering wheel position sensor was bad (swps) and thats not covered under the recall and i will have to pay the $385.00 to have it replaced. to me that is unacceptable! gm needs to stand behind there product because this is a very dangerous situation and the 2cent clip is not the fix all. the recall needs to be modified to include the swap as was noted in the auto trend article when gm said they would perform the repairs likely involving the swaps or its connector free of charge. i guess its all about the mighty dollar. way to go gm i guess somebody has to get killed before you will correct your mistake.

I was on the trimble road on ramp in san jose, ca merging onto freeway 101 at approximately 1235 pm pst and 793 feet from the de la cruz/trimble road traffic light. traffic conditions were light, weather was dry and road conditions were excellent. the on ramp is approximately an 1/4th of a mile long. i pulled into the commuter lane to pass 2 vehicles that were traveling at approximately 40-45 mph. i passed the first vehicle and was about to pass the second when my 2005 corvette steered to the right causing the right front of my car to impact a 1984 4 door sedan toyota on the left rear quarter panel/bumper, behind the left rear wheel. the toyota started to slide right and when the wheels went from asphalt to dirt caused the toyota to roll over coming to rest on its' wheels in the median on the left side of the on ramp. my car came to rest in the dirt on the right side of the road approximately half way on the on ramp. the driver of the toyota had a cut on one of her fingers and was extremely emotional. i was not injured. my car is equiped with on-star which did not activate due to the crash. none of the air bags deployed in my car. on october 4th, 2007 i took my car to courtesy chevrolet in san jose, ca; i told the service rep that i had received 2 notices in the driver information center display to service the active handling system soon and that i had impacted a curb. the service rep asked me if the message reocurred after turning the car off and back on and i told them no but it did display two different times about a week apart. i was told that turning the car off and back on cleared the error code so there was nothing to worry about. i had the car aligned. i thought the right front a arm broke causing the accident due to hitting the curb in october until i received recall notice 10118. i saved all of the mechanical parts replaced on the right front of my car and still have them. the steering sensor was replaced by the dealer on 1-30-08.

Over the last year my service active handling system light has come on. after a while it goes off. ten days ago it came on again for a while, then went off. after that i was traveling on an intersate highway with the cruise control on. all of a sudden the car swerved to the right. light came on saying disengage cruise control, which i did and gained control of the car. i was in the passing lane and was lucky no one was beside me when it swerved to the right or i would have hit them. i was also lucky it didn't swerve left or i would have hit the guard rail. took it to my local dealer with the bulletin #06-02-35-002b. they said it was covered under warranty. this needs to be fixed or someone will get killed.

05 corvette - service active handling message came on after going over a large bump. it comes on everytime i go over a speed bump or hit a pothole that is big enough to jar the car. i did have the car swerve ever so slightly while i was trying to drive straight.

Movement of steering column causes failure of wire connector harness for the steering wheel position sensor. this failure causes incorrect position readings in the active handling system.

When driving approx. 5000rpm active handling will kick on followed by a service active handling message. when active handling activates it causes the car to apply brakes and the rear end to swerve. i have had the sensor replace a few times and nothing seems to work.

My wife was driving our 2005 corvette on a straight road at about 50 miles per hour when the car suddenly shot off to the left lane towards another vehicle. she lost all control of the vehicle and returned across the two lane road hitting the curb, which was about 6 tall, the car then left the ground and made contact with a guard rail that was two rails high. the impact on the guard rail was at the top about 3' from the ground. behind the guard rail is a 75' drop to a grocery store parking lot. the car then came back across the road and stopped in the opposite direction traffic. the damage to the vehicle now stands at $20,000.00. she states that it felt as if the front left tire locked up and has no idea what happened from that point on. she was just holding on for dear life. both air bags deployed and she has had a sore back since the accident. i now learned of the investigation ea09-002 that has been opened and something needs to done now!! *tr

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). while making a tight u-turn to the left in my 2005 corvette the right front brakes locked and would not release. at the same time the service active handling message appeared on the dic (driver information center). this caused the vehicle to pull hard and made it very difficult to pull off the road safely. my first thought was that i blew out a tire. though difficult i was able to get the vehicle off into a parking lot where i turned off the car. i then restarted the vehicle and everything was back to normal. i am very concerned about my safety and the safety of the vehicle if this were to happen when there was oncoming traffic or at higher speeds. there was one time a couple of days prior that the service active handling message showed of the dic but no noticeable problems came about. i talked to my local dealer's service department and they said that it could have been something as simple as an error from driving on wet roads since the light didn't appear again after restarting the car. i believed this and returned to driving until yesterday when this happened. your time and consideration to this matter is greatly appreciated. i'd like to know if gm will issue a proper fix. i have researched online today and have found a tsb about installing a clip in the steering column where the wires plug into the steering sensor but that this may not be the fix for this specific problem. my car has only 17,000 miles on it and has been very well maintained. please advise if possible.  Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). i have a 2005 corvette with the electric telescopic steering column. on several occasions while driving my vette, i have gotten a 'service active handling system' warning in the dic. on some occasions i can simply reset the dic and the message ends. on at least one occasion i had to stop the car, shut down the engine, and restart again to clear the message. i have had at least seven occasions that this has happened. [xxx] the car goes to the dealer in the spring to be worked on. if you desire any further information please feel free to contact me. [xxx] *tr

Prior to the incident i experienced the service traction light would come on maybe a handful of times a month. until the incident i had to actual issues and figured that my exhaust being as loud as it is caused something to set it off. *tr on february 8th the service traction light came on once again however i had to issues that day. it wasn't till the next day that as i was driving normal speeds about 35mph approaching a stop sign before i would enter the feeder road to enter the highway. the road i was on had a very slight curve to the left and the ground was completely dry/ all conditions were normal. out of no where i felt my vehicle being forced hard to the left as if i was hydroplanning and had lost the ability to control the braking of my car. my vehicle crossed the next lane over and with absolutely no control what so ever i was forced over a curb and into a street sign. no one was injured as it was a minor accident however it came with a price. at this point there is estimated to be $6500.00 in damages to my vehicle due to this. no work has begun on my vehicle. i have understood that this is a problem being investigated on other chevrolet corvette models from 05 and up under investigation number ea09-002. i would like to better understand what has happened and be sure that my vehicle is safe as it was very frightening to have lost control in perfectly good driving conditions. like i have earlier stated my vehicle has not started the repair process and i will be sure to inform chevy of my discovery so that this potentially life threatening issue becomes fixed. *tr

My service active handling had been coming on for a couple weeks and then would go away. about a week ago i was driving at about 35 mph and i slowed down to turn. it was about 10:00 not very many people on the road thank god. after turning i returned to around 35mph and then my service active handling light came on followed by front driver side locking up. i was in the right lane and ended up almost on the curb on the other side of the left lane. tw*

On 01/07/2010, the service active handling message came on crossing over a railroad track at around five mph. the message stayed on until restarting the car. on 01/08/2010, while slowing the car through 55 mph to exit the highway, the front right brake applied for approximately half of a second pulling me into the right exit lane. active handling-on message displayed and stayed on for about 5 seconds. luckily, no other cars were near and no accident occurred. at the time of the incident i was driving strait. however, i do remember hitting a rough patch of highway right before the brake applied. i had the car serviced at the chevrolet dealer. the steering wheel position sensor was replaced. the car is a 2005 corvette with the z51 package and telescopic steering wheel. *tr

(entered by smch from e-mail, trimmed to fit available content length) i purchased my 2005 corvette new in los angeles five years ago. have been having the service active handling problem now for the last year and a half. at speeds of 30mph or less...thus far ssuddenly brakes and pulls hard to the left while pulsing on and off the brakes. this has been very scary, needless to say, and i have narrowly avoided being forced into oncoming traffic or being rear-ended by the sudden braking. i took my car to a dealership for the fifth time over this concern and have heard the same story.; that there is no code or recall for this problem. (update from e-mail) i have had the repair completed. i was told it was a fault in the steering column (telescoping) and would be fixed with a couple of zip ties, but the process required a lot to be removed and while i did it i should replace the tire sensor as well, as that could be part of the issue. i had the repair done out of fear that if i didn't , it would endanger my family. when the brakes self applied, the steering would pull hard to the left. they would remain that way until i either turned the vehicle off or held down the traction control button for seven seconds which turns off traction control and active handling. if this wasn't done, and any gas was applied, the brakes would lock harder, pulsing off and on intermittently. the pull was drastic enough to have pulled about ten degrees off of center-line, but since it happened at low speeds, it did not cause any accidents. my concern was, the few times it happened while other drivers were following... almost had some rear end collisions. the problem has been fixed for two weeks now, and have had no sign of it repeating. the mechanic at the dealership said he's done three or four of these and he puts in two zip-ties to fix the problem as he states the recommended one is not enough.

My service active handling light came on 11/13/09.on 11/14/09 i was traveling across a bridge at 55 miles per hour when my brakes and steering locked up. i had no control of the vehicle. i eventually slid to a stop causing traffic behind me to swerve into the next lane. i could barely get the car off the road because the brakes would not release. this is a 2005 chevrolet corvette with 33,000 miles. i took the vehicle to the dealership and was told the steering sensor inside the steering column was bad and needed to be replaced and the wires needed to be checked and re tightened. this could have been more severe or even fatal if not for the time of day and the amount of traffic. i could not believe something so dangerous was not recalled. i am sure others have had this problem and crashed their cars and had no idea what happened, if not for my quick reactions or luck, i might have ran off the bridge and killed myself or injured someone else. that would be the first thing i checked on any 2005 corvette that had an unexplained crash where the driver simply lost control. i was not accelerating or doing anything out of the ordinary when my incident occurred. the repair cost me $612.00, costly for what appears to be an engineering flaw. i am not exaggerating when i say he vehicle was completely out of my control! this is a very serious problem that needs to be addressed. i don't believe that chevrolet or any dealership should profit from this life threatening defect. *tr

On 10/09/2009 while driving at 35mph on a single lane road without warning the active handling message displayed on the dic of my 2005 chevrolet corvette causing the vehicle to veer off the road. fortunately i was able to avoid a collision. there was no warning and the car was being driven normally. this is the first time this has happened and i have not driven it since. *tr

In regards to a current investigation code ea09-002 with the odi, which i found online, i would like to file the same complaint. today i was driving at around 40 mph after making a right hand turn when all of a sudden the service active handling system appeared and my wheel pulled violently to the left. it did this repeatedly until i luckily was able to stop the car and restart it. upon restart the active handling warning was no longer there and the car worked fine. 2005 chevy corvette 24k miles on car. for the price of this car and the low mileage this should not be happening. i fear if i was on the freeway this could have caused a fatal accident. *tr

Active handling system on a 2005 6-speed chevy corvette activated while driving ~10mph through a parking lot and making a gentle right turn, seizing front left caliper until the car was brought to a complete stop. disabling ahs eliminates issue, but system reactivates every start. happened again exiting a highway just minutes later. car has ~30k miles, with no accidents or problems in the past. *tr

My active handling activates almost weekly at lower speeds while turning, even with the traction control off. the problem is it locks up the front brakes and i can not turn or move the vehicle!! while this may not sound too serious at low speeds, imagine pulling out into traffic and the brakes lock up on your car. it occurs pulling onto grass or loose gravel also, especially in turns. i have to turn the car off and restart it for it to move again. the active handling light comes on but will go away when restarted. the problem first occurred last fall and i finally addressed it with the local gm shop with tsb 06-02-35-0002b on 1/2/09 ($88.15 service), which added a clip to the swpc connector. it did not correct the problem long term. i do have stock size street tires on my car also. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet corvette. the contact stated that the electric stability control was defective and the active handling engages automatically at different speeds. when manually disengaged, it will automatically re-engage if it senses a crash. when a crash is detected, the brakes lock and the steering turns. prior to the failure, a warning light illuminates for the manual active control. the failure occurs at various speeds. the dealer could not duplicate the failure; however, they replaced the sensors and stated that more could be done. no work was performed on the vehicle prior to the failure. the vin was unknown. the failure mileage was 55,000 and current mileage was 70,000.

Active handling error displayed. took car in for service on 3/23, dealer installed a wiring clip per tsb 06-02-35-002. approximately 6 days later (while on vacation), while driving through an intersection, active handling indication in dic, right, front brake applied by computer/handling system. right front wheel locked up. after a few seconds, the brake released, drove approximately 20 feet, problem happened again. shut car off, restarted it, appeared ok. luckily, i was only going about 25 mph. took car to local dealer in fl. this dealer replaced the steering wheel position sensor. *tr

Service active handling error appears on my dic at random times although nothing seems to be wrong. i can shut the engine down and turn it back on and the error does not appear. there are other times that it will reappear but the vehicle drives ok. i will turn active handling off when the error appears. it seems to appear only when i have key fob no 2 in my pocket. because i've heard horror stories about active handling taking over the vehicle i'm very cautious about this function in the vehicle. i mentioned this to a dealer and they told me to ignore it since they couldn't get it to display. *tr

There is a dangerous problem with my corvette that i believe is tied to faults in the tire pressure monitoring system. i was driving on a freeway following a left curve when i felt the brakes grab. i saw active handling displayed; however, there was no reason for active handling to occur (roadway was dry, was driving at posted speed limit, was not making a sudden turning maneuver). later i saw that the car was displaying a front right tire pressure of 0 psi, but no other warnings occurred (typically, a yellow warning light goes on an car displays a low tire pressure or right front tire flat warning when this occurs). i've had ongoing problems with the tire pressure monitoring system and chevy has attempted repair once. usually one of the front tires will read zero psi and the aforementioned warnings will appear, and the car's active handling system will engage more easily, then a few minutes later, the car will display normal tire pressures again. in the incident i'm describing here, there was no warning that the tire pressure was being read at zero, and no indication that active handling would engage so easily. this is a definite safety hazard that could result in loss of control or a crash. i have an appointment to get the car serviced in two days. *tr

Active handling activated on my 2005 corvette at about 35-40 mph locking and unlocking the brakes, repeatedly, on only the front right wheel. was cruising at a steady speed in a straight line. nearly lost control of car. apparently this is a common occurrence with the c6 corvettes. in the dealership now for repair. dealer indicates the steering position sensor has failed. this is a very dangerous product defect! *tr
