Defect SummaryCertain passenger vehicles were produced with one or both rear brake hydraulic lines that can come in contact with or be affected by heat from the left engine exhaust manifold and the left exhaust pipe. the brake fluid could reach elevated temperatures and boil.
Consequence SummaryIf the brake fluid boils in a rear brake line, the effectiveness of the rear brake system would be reduced which could result in a brake line leak and loss of brake fluid. if enough fluid leaks from the rear brake system so that brake pedal application can no longer build pressure to the rear brakes. the operator of the vehicle will experience limited braking which could result in a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will (1) inspect the left engine exhaust manifold clip for proper alignment and placement on the body-mounted stud. if incorrect, they will reposition the clip on the brake lines and reinstall the clip on the stud; (2) the dealer will verify that both rear brake lines have the proper clearance to the left exhaust pipe. they will reposition the lines by bending as necessary; (3) dealers will remove the machining tab from the rear differential housing. also, dealers are to inspect the brake lines for wear in these related areas and repair or replace if there is any sign of wear-through on the nylon overcoating. the recall began on january 18, 2005. owners should contact cadillac at 1-866-982-2239 or chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438.

On may 2010 i received a safety recall notice #10118 for my 2005 chevy corvette, that there was a problem with the active handling system. i brought it to the chevy dealer and they put a plastic clip on a wire connection. recently the service active in may ohandling system light will appear and the brakes will apply by themselves and the car does a involuntary nose dive. i shut the car off and it might not happen again for 2 more weeks or so. i contacted chevy with my problem and spoke to [xxx] @ 866-790-5600 [xxx] he told me they needed to take the car to ed morse chevrolet and have it checked out at my expense. they were only responsible to fix this problem one time! i told [xxx] that it was not fixed properly the first time and brought to chevy ed morse sawgrass (954-514-3440) as the dealer requested. when i got there as per the appointment all they did was trying to sell me a new corvette! please help...i don't feel safe to drive my car like this, and at this point i don't really know what to do anymore...  I have a 2005 chevrolet corvette with a service active handling, abs and traction control issue. i feel it is a quality/safety concern on general motors' part as this causes the vehicle to stop abrupty at times at any speed. currently no high speed issues have occured but fear that it may happen. i see no movement on gm's part to remedy this obvious safety issue that can cause injury to myself and maybe others in the event that the system completely fails or fails at the wrong time. the current investigation number i am told associated with this is ea09-002

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). while making a tight u-turn to the left in my 2005 corvette the right front brakes locked and would not release. at the same time the service active handling message appeared on the dic (driver information center). this caused the vehicle to pull hard and made it very difficult to pull off the road safely. my first thought was that i blew out a tire. though difficult i was able to get the vehicle off into a parking lot where i turned off the car. i then restarted the vehicle and everything was back to normal. i am very concerned about my safety and the safety of the vehicle if this were to happen when there was oncoming traffic or at higher speeds. there was one time a couple of days prior that the service active handling message showed of the dic but no noticeable problems came about. i talked to my local dealer's service department and they said that it could have been something as simple as an error from driving on wet roads since the light didn't appear again after restarting the car. i believed this and returned to driving until yesterday when this happened. your time and consideration to this matter is greatly appreciated. i'd like to know if gm will issue a proper fix. i have researched online today and have found a tsb about installing a clip in the steering column where the wires plug into the steering sensor but that this may not be the fix for this specific problem. my car has only 17,000 miles on it and has been very well maintained. please advise if possible.  I own a 2005 corvette c6 convertible. today, as i was driving into work the service active handling system light came on. i looked on the internet about this problem & found that this can potentially cause the brakes to activate at any speed. this is a very serious problem. i took it to the dealer to have this fixed but have not heard back from them yet. i do not trust this car at freeway speeds. *tr

This vehicle (corvette) was parked , gear in reverse, with the emergency brake fully engaged , vehicle not running .while reaching in to press acess. button inadvertanly pressed the start button which put the car into a strong violent moving reverse action, the corvette hit my truck which was parked two-three feet behind corvette and drove my vehicle a good ten feet before the corvette stalled, the truck was not running ,truck was parked in gear with the emergency brake applied --the skid marks from my truck being pushed are still in my driveway and road

I was driving at approximately 20mph leaving my house when the active handling light came on along with abs lights. my foot was on the gas and in first gear. suddenly the breaks apply by themselves causing the car to veer left. at this point i could not control my steering wheel to correct the problem. this happens randomly and i can not duplicate the problem. it is very dangerous. i am worried if this happens at high speeds, a very bad accident can occur. this first occurred on 08/03/11. it happened for about 5 minutes when i left my house. i had to turn off all active handling and traction control for this to stop. i drove fine the rest of the day with it off. it did not happen again for a couple of weeks. around 08/19/11, it happened again. this time at a best buy parking lot traveling at 10mph. i immediately contacted the maita chevrolet dealership in elk grove, ca and took the car in the next day. i took the car in and they could not duplicate the problem. they said that there is nothing wrong with the car. i told them that it is not normal to drive the car and suddenly the brakes apply by themselves and veers to the left. they said there is nothing that they can do because they could not replicate the problem. i am worried that if this happens on the freeway while i am driving it can be a very dangerous situation for everyone. i am not sure what i can do but i know it is a safety issue.

The failure of the clutch master cylinder (verified and repaired) after shifting into reverse, caused the car to accelerate rapidly backwards, and initially totally out of control. collided first with a car behind and to the right, and then hurdled back along a busy small road in a shopping center. i was finally able to stop the car by using one foot on top of the other, pressing as hard as i could on the brake pedal. it was small miracle that i didn't hit anyone, given the time (7:00 pm) the weather (sunny and 70 deg) and the number of people moving about.

I have had tow incidents where my service active handling error has come up. last week i had my wheels lock up after trying to complete a u turn and had to pull over and restart my car to correct the braking issue as best as i can describe it was corrected. subsequently the service active handling has come on a number of times and clears as the car is restarted. i have taken it in and they are able to correct the problem but have yet to find a solution from it occurring again. i have had to use my extended service contract to cover the expenses both times. *tr

On 01/07/2010, the service active handling message came on crossing over a railroad track at around five mph. the message stayed on until restarting the car. on 01/08/2010, while slowing the car through 55 mph to exit the highway, the front right brake applied for approximately half of a second pulling me into the right exit lane. active handling-on message displayed and stayed on for about 5 seconds. luckily, no other cars were near and no accident occurred. at the time of the incident i was driving strait. however, i do remember hitting a rough patch of highway right before the brake applied. i had the car serviced at the chevrolet dealer. the steering wheel position sensor was replaced. the car is a 2005 corvette with the z51 package and telescopic steering wheel. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet corvette. the vehicle has two different traction controls and active handling on the brakes. there was a code that came on for the active handling, which can apply more than one brake system to keep the vehicle in control. while decelerating at 30 mph he felt the active handling controls apply the front brakes, which pulled the vehicle to the right. the vehicle was restarted, and the brakes reset itself. the manufacturer was notified, and he was referred to a dealer. tsb # 06-02-35-002b references this failure. the failure mileage was 9,638.

A brake line ruptured on my vehicle while i was driving it at 55 mpg. i needed to exit an interstate, and the car came to a halt very slowly, the remaining brake line working much less effectively, of course. no warning light came on. after i stopped, clouds of pure white smoke billowed from the hood, and into the passenger compartment. i assume this was brake fluid contacting a hot surface. i used onstar to call for a tow to my dealer, criswell chevrolet in gaithersburg, md. criswell diagnosed the brake line rupture. there is some doubt whether a dealer can re-install a brake line safely and effectively: see the discussion at http://forums.corvetteforum.com/showthread.php?t=1113860&forum_id=74 as the forum discussion indicates, this has happened to other new corvette owners. no one knows, at this point, how to fix my corvette and when it will be fixed. had i had to stop short, i would have had a serious accident, as one of my brake lines had failed with no warning, on a brand new car.
