Defect SummaryGm is recalling certain model year 2005 and 2006 chevrolet corvette passenger cars manufactured between march 2004 and january 2006 equipped with a tilt and telescoping steering column (rpo n37). in rare cases, repeated movement of the steering column may cause a signal interruption within the column. if this occurs, the message, service active handling system will appear in the driver information center, and one or more of the brakes may apply, possibly causing the vehicle to pull to the right or left.
Consequence SummaryIf the driver does not respond to the change in vehicle movement, a crash could occur.
Corrective SummaryGm will notify owners and dealers will repair the vehicles free of charge. the safety recall began on april 30, 2010. owners may contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 and gmc at 1-866-996-9463 or at the owner center at www.gmownercenter.com.

Defect SummaryCertain passenger vehicles may have been built with a power steering hose that is not to specification. under extreme steering maneuvers, such as turning the steering wheel fully to the left or right while braking, the hose may fracture and leak fluid.
Consequence SummaryIf this were to occur, power steering assist would be lost and increased steering effort would be required. on vehicles equipped with hydro-boost power brakes, it could also result in loss of power brake assist and increased braking effort would be required. if the power steering fluid spray were to spray onto hot engine parts, an engine compartment fire could occur.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect the power steering hose(s) for two suspect date codes and replace them if required. the recall will begin on october 14, 2005. owners may contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, gmc at 1-866-996-9463, buick at 1-866-608-8080, cadillac at 1-866-982-2339, isuzu at 1-800-255-6727, or hummer at 1-800-732-5493.

On may 2010 i received a safety recall notice #10118 for my 2005 chevy corvette, that there was a problem with the active handling system. i brought it to the chevy dealer and they put a plastic clip on a wire connection. recently the service active in may ohandling system light will appear and the brakes will apply by themselves and the car does a involuntary nose dive. i shut the car off and it might not happen again for 2 more weeks or so. i contacted chevy with my problem and spoke to [xxx] @ 866-790-5600 [xxx] he told me they needed to take the car to ed morse chevrolet and have it checked out at my expense. they were only responsible to fix this problem one time! i told [xxx] that it was not fixed properly the first time and brought to chevy ed morse sawgrass (954-514-3440) as the dealer requested. when i got there as per the appointment all they did was trying to sell me a new corvette! please help...i don't feel safe to drive my car like this, and at this point i don't really know what to do anymore...  I was driving at approximately 20mph leaving my house when the active handling light came on along with abs lights. my foot was on the gas and in first gear. suddenly the breaks apply by themselves causing the car to veer left. at this point i could not control my steering wheel to correct the problem. this happens randomly and i can not duplicate the problem. it is very dangerous. i am worried if this happens at high speeds, a very bad accident can occur. this first occurred on 08/03/11. it happened for about 5 minutes when i left my house. i had to turn off all active handling and traction control for this to stop. i drove fine the rest of the day with it off. it did not happen again for a couple of weeks. around 08/19/11, it happened again. this time at a best buy parking lot traveling at 10mph. i immediately contacted the maita chevrolet dealership in elk grove, ca and took the car in the next day. i took the car in and they could not duplicate the problem. they said that there is nothing wrong with the car. i told them that it is not normal to drive the car and suddenly the brakes apply by themselves and veers to the left. they said there is nothing that they can do because they could not replicate the problem. i am worried that if this happens on the freeway while i am driving it can be a very dangerous situation for everyone. i am not sure what i can do but i know it is a safety issue.

Initially car was intermittently not starting. dic indicator stated steering wheel was locked. on march 11, 2011, i was driving through a parking lot the steering wheel locked up while i was driving the vehicle. upon my research 1997-2004 models were recalled for this issue. models 2006-2010 the feature - steering column lock was not installed on the cars. my concern is 2005 models have not been recalled and could cause possible deaths of owners and or other members of the public.
02/12/201015000
I just entered the freeway and traffic was slow 40 to 45 mph. i moved from far right to center lane then from center to left lane. when i moved from center to left i was traveling between 45 and 50 mph when the rear of the car began to slide out of control. when i but did not understand why as the roads where dry and clear. as i tried to regain control the car did not respond and continued to slide completely out of control 180 degree and slid sideways into a wall of plowed ice and snow in the left shoulder and flip on its roof. the loss of understanding of how this happened has given me much anguish as i know i had the traction control handling on, until i found out about a recall having to do with the steering and handling a few months later.

Service column lock (scl) code on dic occurs with high frequency on 2005 chevrolet corvette mn06 when attempting to crank engine - car will not crank, other electrical components function. car flatbed-towed on at least 4 occasions. car was serviced numerous times, by 3 different chevrolet dealers, for separate scl incidents occurring 2006-2010; most recent scl incidents occurred 6/2010 & 11/2010; car towed to chevrolet dealer in 6/2010 to a chev dealer that claims to be corvette service center of south. dealer replaced scl part but only after the car experienced scl failure on their lot when i attempted to take delivery after they certified the car was fine. car experienced scl on their lot and was pushed into service bay. scl post-repair failure occurred 11/2010 following dealer's replacement/repair of scl part. car towed to private auto repair shop where scl post-repair failure was discovered (hint: tapping the column released the scl): bcm also required replacement - car would not communicate with bi-directional tool. scl issue exists with many 2005 corvettes (refer to corvette forums); scl was a notorious problem for c5 production years -refer to nhtsa recall campaign number : 04v060000. gm issued scl recall for c5, but not yet for c6. multiple c6 owners report experiencing scl failure & post-repair failure -- gm refuses to acknowledge this is a gm problem - owners are paying for the repairs and there is no guarantee that the new scl part will function and no guarantee that the steering column will not lock during operation. gm refuses to recognize that they have a serious safety and defective engineering issue with the 2005 c6 production model.
02/01/201065000
Service column lock error. car will leave me stranded when parked. issue has existed with multiple 05 mn6 covettes and previous years. multiple people have reported this issue. gm refuses to recognize an issue with this.

2005 corvette steering column lock would not allow engine to start but would allow steering wheel to move. dealer replaced column lock system, worked ok for 10 days. car would not start again, column lock would not release steering wheel. i understand earlier model vettes recalled to fix this with a bypass. later model vettes do not have this locking system. part is obviously defective for 2005. i am concerned that column lock will engage while i am driving. have there been any crashes resulting from this? i am afraid to drive this car.

Received a safety recall notice from chevy for my 2005 corvette. safety recall 10118. general motors has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2005 chevrolet corvettes equipped with a tilt and telescoping steering column. as a result gm is conducting a safety recall. in rare cases, repeated movement of the steering column may cause a signal interruption within the column. if this occurs, the message, service active handling system will appear, and one or more of the brakes may apply , possibly causing the vehicle to pull to the right or left. if the driver does not respond to the change in vehicle movement, a crash could occur. chevrolet will inspect the wire connection in the steering column, and if necessary, install an additional clip.
03/09/201035000
2005 chevrolet corvette has service active handling system on dic multiple times. gm has issued tsb 06.02.35.002b to insert a clip in swps to no avail. this is a steering and abs related problem and should be investigated. i have heard of instances where wheels can lock at high speed. gm should thoroughly investigate and recall for repair.

Prior to the incident i experienced the service traction light would come on maybe a handful of times a month. until the incident i had to actual issues and figured that my exhaust being as loud as it is caused something to set it off. *tr on february 8th the service traction light came on once again however i had to issues that day. it wasn't till the next day that as i was driving normal speeds about 35mph approaching a stop sign before i would enter the feeder road to enter the highway. the road i was on had a very slight curve to the left and the ground was completely dry/ all conditions were normal. out of no where i felt my vehicle being forced hard to the left as if i was hydroplanning and had lost the ability to control the braking of my car. my vehicle crossed the next lane over and with absolutely no control what so ever i was forced over a curb and into a street sign. no one was injured as it was a minor accident however it came with a price. at this point there is estimated to be $6500.00 in damages to my vehicle due to this. no work has begun on my vehicle. i have understood that this is a problem being investigated on other chevrolet corvette models from 05 and up under investigation number ea09-002. i would like to better understand what has happened and be sure that my vehicle is safe as it was very frightening to have lost control in perfectly good driving conditions. like i have earlier stated my vehicle has not started the repair process and i will be sure to inform chevy of my discovery so that this potentially life threatening issue becomes fixed. *tr

My service active handling light came on 11/13/09.on 11/14/09 i was traveling across a bridge at 55 miles per hour when my brakes and steering locked up. i had no control of the vehicle. i eventually slid to a stop causing traffic behind me to swerve into the next lane. i could barely get the car off the road because the brakes would not release. this is a 2005 chevrolet corvette with 33,000 miles. i took the vehicle to the dealership and was told the steering sensor inside the steering column was bad and needed to be replaced and the wires needed to be checked and re tightened. this could have been more severe or even fatal if not for the time of day and the amount of traffic. i could not believe something so dangerous was not recalled. i am sure others have had this problem and crashed their cars and had no idea what happened, if not for my quick reactions or luck, i might have ran off the bridge and killed myself or injured someone else. that would be the first thing i checked on any 2005 corvette that had an unexplained crash where the driver simply lost control. i was not accelerating or doing anything out of the ordinary when my incident occurred. the repair cost me $612.00, costly for what appears to be an engineering flaw. i am not exaggerating when i say he vehicle was completely out of my control! this is a very serious problem that needs to be addressed. i don't believe that chevrolet or any dealership should profit from this life threatening defect. *tr

Loud grinding noise and severe vibration when turning steering wheel either at stop or slow speed with or without brakes applied. a few instances of momentary steering loss on turns (bends in road) at speeds approximately 30 mph. problem started at purchase in july 2005 and has increased in severity over the past 8 months. there is also a snapping noise under the center console when the brakes are applied that started 3/16/06. the car has been to the dealership on 6 occasions and i have filed a complaint with general motors customer assistance. service ticket dated 2/9/06 states normal characteristic of this vehicle, no repairs to be attempted. service ticket dated 3/10/06 states no parts available till 6/06, no work done at this time. the dealership told me this would not be normal in any car but they have been instructed by gm not to make any repairs. i researched the problem on the internet and came across the recall 05v455000 and contacted gm. gm stated that because my vin number is not within a certain range that my car in not included, however i feel my car regardless of the vin number displays the same characteristics of the power steering hose issue. *nm

On june 22, 2005 while driving at highway speed my '05 covette lost its serpentine belt causing the car to lose pwer steering, engine oil and coolent. with the loss or steering the car became hard to steer and manuver. this problem has been know by chevrolet that a specific bolt was not placed correctly during manufacturing and causes the loss of the serpentine belt. this was a scary event to lose steering at 60mph with a passenger during the ending of rush hour traffic on hwy114 at 6pm. the repair is taking place now involving a new diamond washer and proper torquing of the bolt. possible engine damage may have occured and the reliability of the vehicle is now in question. in some occurances the problem has happened again. i don't want it to be me and have an accident.

Seven to eight thousand chevrolet corvettes built in late 2004 are in a batch being watched by gm because there have been dozens of instances of the crank shaft pulley belt backing out and allowing the pulley to loosen or fall off. when that happens the car looses power steering and the rest of the functions run off the belts. the belt and pulley can also cause other damage under the hood. production nuber corvettes from over three thousand to over eleven thousand are in the group identified as problematic. chevrolet has realease a technical service bulletin, tsb number (05-06-01-001a), but says it can not help buyers until after a failure. i own a corvette in that group, and i fear that i can't trust the car to perform safely. i belong to several corvette related internet forums, and i get reports of new failures every day. there are dozens of failures reported by members of just one forum. the failures have been occurring since november, 2004. gm is obviously not going to fix this safety problem without nhtsa inquiry, and i'd like nhtsa to ask gm to get serious about protecting the lives of their purchasers. spontaneous loss of steer assist and fluid loss is a safety issue - in my opinion. will nhtsa look into this situation before someone dies, please? *ak
