Dt: the contacts complained about electrical problems. the dashboard board gauges were incorrect. this happened every time that the vehicle was in use. every light on the dashboard came on. the electrical problems have been happening for the past week. also, he vehicle experienced starting problems. the vehicle sometimes will not start the first time when trying to start it. the contact has to wait about 20 minutes then start the vehicle again. the battery has been checked and it was charging. this has been an intermittent problem for a year. she spoke to gm, and they said to take the vehicle to the dealer for diagnostic testing. she has not taken the vehicle to a dealership at this time.*ak

While applying the brakes, the vehicle jerked and vibrated uncontrollably. the consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and drove it to the dealer for inspection. the mechanic determined that the front rotors rusted, and needed to be replaced. *ak the brake problem was continuous front and back since 5958 miles. chevrolet would not replace the brakes. the calipers were leaking, the security light had come on three times when the vehicle was in motion with the key, the reluctor ring/sensor was out of adjustment caused by rust, and the driveline made a clanking sound. gm had been made aware of the problems. *sc *jb

This occurred on saturday, 1/31/04. vehicle make: 2500 chevrolet silverado, 3/4 ton, 6' bed, 6l engine description: i had to make a tight right hand turn from a gas station onto the main road in syracuse, new york as opposing traffic was coming at me. after i completed the turn and started to head south on the main four lane road i immediately found out that the power steering was quite rough. quite rough was not the word for it as there was no power steering! about a block from that point i had to brake and found out that there were no power assisted brakes on the vehicle. no idiot lights came on at all and this presented quite a serious problem especially with the snow plow attached. both the fluid in the master brake and power steering cylinders were right up to normal levels and the serpentine belt was relatively new and intact! trust me that i am not happy about this at all from a vehicle that has only 30,000 miles on it and has been plagued with various major problems throughout its somewhat youthful history including two (2) full brake jobs to date. i'm just thankful that no one was hurt including myself. i want this letter to be relayed to the chevrolet zone manager and i would like their input on the issues that have been presented. as a consumer there is no way that both the power steering and brakes should have gone at the same time, plus, the fact that there were no indications of a major problem from the message center or dashboard. there very easily could have been a different ending to this story especially with the type of winter weather and road conditions we have been having as of late here in upstate new york. *jb

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - ALTERNATOR/GENERATOR/REGULATOR

I am writing to seek some assistance with an inferior product produced by gm. i have a chevy 2000 silverado z71 pick up that has piston slap starting at around 15k miles and progressively worsened which the dealer states is normal wear. this expensive vehicle also has a rear end bang into drive and then reverse again the dealer states is normal. recently i fixed a snapped cable for the drivers window which the same kind of cable was recalled for the tail gate cables. i have replaced recall items for the tail gate cables, drive shaft yolk and the abs sensors to which it is still not functioning properly. all of which when presented to the dealer and the response was it is normal, until the recall occurred. it seems the policy of a company which creates an inferior product is to state, it is normal to the consumer until the government steps when enough people complain and makes the dealer own up to the problems with the products and finally treats the consumer with more compassion, and to some degree decency. with the many problems with this vehicle the government needs to step in and help the consumer with the dealership resistance to fix the problems caused by more concern for profit than quality. *nm
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - BATTERY
08/02/2004106/01/2003
Battery connection leaked battery acid on the braking system tubing.*mr the acid leaking onto the brake lines caused the brakes to fail. the dealer indicated that this was a common problem with these batteries. *nm

Factory battery with side-mounted terminals leaked acid onto wiper fluid well mounted below it causing well to crack and drain. dealer replaced the wiper well, but recommended i replace the battery as well. i replaced the battery myself (instead of letting the dealership do it) on may 17, but not before the old battery had once again leaked acid and cracked the new wiper fluid well. old battery casing was not cracked or otherwise damaged; acid appeared to leak directly out of the terminals. this appears to be a design flaw by either ac delco for the battery itself or by gm for not properly isolating the battery from vibration. furthermore, the foam diaper the old battery was wrapped in indicates that gm was aware of a potential leak issue for this battery. the foam does nothing to hinder vibration. most of my 40000 miles are highway miles, and i seldom go off-roading (unless the potholes on the interstates of sc count). ak

Using automatic light sensor control when lights failed-- 65mph on a dark secondary road- all the lights in the vehicle went out - inside and outside - fortunately it was a straight section of road -- slammed on the brakes and the pickup stopped before it went into the ditch - sure scared my passengers -- had a mercedes mechanic with us and he said he had read a news letter from the mercedes people about gm vehicles having complete electrical failures - he said that the article stated the engine had quit in several cases. the lights did functioned on the manual setting. however, after about 20 minutes we arrived home and the lights still would not function in the auto sensor position. i started using the manual position at night after the incident-- but, several times i forgot to use the manual setting and the same problem occurred. however, switching immediately to manual restored the lights. it is a bit unnerving having the lights quit -- as we live in western oklahoma and the roads are not as well marked nor lighted like back east. reported problem to gm customer assistance center -- file number c02315205 -- reported to dealer also -- but - no one else had run into the problem -- they said they checked with their gm contact -- and they had no record of anyone else reporting this problem -- it really sounds like an electrical contact problem -- when it get hot or shorts out -- it opens the contact points and the lights go out-- then when it cools -- the auto sensor starts working again. after the first incident--i tried the auto sensor position next morning - the auto sensor worked just like it was supposed to operate. thus, i could not duplicate the malfunction for the dealer's mechanics.*ak

Truck had 41000 miles and the gas gauge started jumping from empty to full. around 44000 miles the abs brake light on the dash appeared, took to dealer, said it was the sensor at/near the center bottom of engine and was common , it would cost me around $1000.00 to have it repaired or wait to see if it was recalled and just drive my truck using the hyd brakes only. i have been doing this. had only the man. warranty that ended at 36 k. very disappointed, very long. *nm

On 9/22/05 i had smoke coming out of the steering wheel column. on 9/23/05 i brought my 2000 chevrolet silverado to the champion chevrolet dealer for diagnostics. it was determined that the multi function switch p/n 26100839 was damaged and needed replacement. this is a fire hazard and should be recalled by gm. i do have the old damaged switch. *jb

Our truck was parked in our driveway. we had been home for about 2 hours after driving the truck. it caught fire and exploded. the fire dept said the it started in the dash under the steering column, probably resulting from faulty wiring. we have had this truck for 4 months and it only had 9000 miles on it. we have never had anything go wrong with it until now and this is major. the truck is totally destroyed, another car was damaged and the siding of our house had damage. are there any other reports of this? *ak
