Gm is conducting a recall on all subject vehicles build between may 1999 and october 14, 1999.significant changes were incorporated into production in early october 1999, and vehicles built after that date have lower warranty failure rates.the complaint and warranty data appear to support the effectiveness of these changes. gm made additional changes in november 1999, february 2000, may 2001, and february 2004.odi will continue to monitor this problem and will take further action, if warranted, in the future.for further technical details see the attached engineering analysis report.

Continued knocking from steering column. truck was taking to dealer under warranty where the claimed that the noise was from the upper intermediate shaft lack of grease. they then greased the shaft which worked long enought to take the car out of warranty. now the knocking is back and gm now saids that the shaft they greased needs to be replaced with an updated one. all gm did was to rigged this steering shaft long enought to take it out of warranty. they now want several hundred dollars for repairs. also the engine in this truck knocks and pings like a diesel. i have to use premium gas and the knocking and pinging is getting worse. gm claims this noise is normal for this engine and brushed me off saying they could do nothing about it, its normal.*ak

I am the owner of a 2000 chevy silverado 2500 heavy duty truck (vin 1gcgk29u9ye257991). my truck recently became disabled due to a malfunction of the power steering pump during the course of normal operation. i was returning home from running errands when i realized i the truck was suddenly difficult to steer. i attempted to slow down and discovered that was difficult as well. i had no choice but to drive my vehicle home in this condition. i understand that there is currently a recall for certain trucks that contain similar or identical equipment. i have been in contact with customer service and was informed that my truck?s vin is not included in this recall. following the conversation with a gm representative, i conducted further research. from what i can ascertain, the trucks that are included in the recall have the same hydro-boost system that my truck has. i fail to understand why gm is excluding a truck from its recall that has the same equipment and same crippling malfunction of trucks that have been recalled. i strongly feel that further inquiry is required in this matter. please reply at your earliest possible convenience. i anticipate that your investigation will result in my vehicle being included in the recall. thank you for your attention to this matter.*ak

While working on my property, i was driving up a hill in my backyard when my power steering went out while i was passing through the gate of my fence on my property causing me to impact the gate corner post. because i was in a turn exiting through the fence, i sustained a substantial dent to the left side of my truck bed and to the right passenger door. i jacked the front of the truck, the steering wheel moved freely, no damage to the front end. i called the nearest dealership which was a gmc dealer, they indicated that i probably had a power steering pump failure. i brought it in and they confirmed that the pump had failed. they had to replace the pump and flush the system, and had the drive belts replaced while they were working in the area. also had the dent on the left side repaired but did not repair the dent on the rh side due to the cost to do both sides.*ak

This occurred on saturday, 1/31/04. vehicle make: 2500 chevrolet silverado, 3/4 ton, 6' bed, 6l engine description: i had to make a tight right hand turn from a gas station onto the main road in syracuse, new york as opposing traffic was coming at me. after i completed the turn and started to head south on the main four lane road i immediately found out that the power steering was quite rough. quite rough was not the word for it as there was no power steering! about a block from that point i had to brake and found out that there were no power assisted brakes on the vehicle. no idiot lights came on at all and this presented quite a serious problem especially with the snow plow attached. both the fluid in the master brake and power steering cylinders were right up to normal levels and the serpentine belt was relatively new and intact! trust me that i am not happy about this at all from a vehicle that has only 30,000 miles on it and has been plagued with various major problems throughout its somewhat youthful history including two (2) full brake jobs to date. i'm just thankful that no one was hurt including myself. i want this letter to be relayed to the chevrolet zone manager and i would like their input on the issues that have been presented. as a consumer there is no way that both the power steering and brakes should have gone at the same time, plus, the fact that there were no indications of a major problem from the message center or dashboard. there very easily could have been a different ending to this story especially with the type of winter weather and road conditions we have been having as of late here in upstate new york. *jb

I own a 2000 chevy silverado. the upper intermediate steering shaft is defective and was replaced per service bulletin 00-02-35-003j in jan. 2002. problems with chatters and erratic steering performance have continued and gm states that they plan to correct the problem but never have. their recommendation is to grease the shaft...which only helps for a few thousand miles and then the chatter and erratic steering performance returns. it's a distraction which driving and in my opinion could result in an accident. i also question whether the current shaft is strong enough in the event of a rigorous steering maneuver. gm has dragged it's feet on this and it's time an outside agency looked into it and insisted that gm recall the vehicle and develop a permanent fix for this problem. such erratic performance in my opinion is a distraction that could contribute to an accident and the shaft could strip or fracture as well in certain situations according to certain mechanics i've talked with. *jb

The 2000 silverado has to be a blunder by general motors. the truck has bad tires, the engine has used oil since day one . the engine has a deep knocking noise in the lower part and a tapping noise in the upper part . the engine has a miss at idle and no matter how much diagnostic equipment you hook up to the truck you can't find the reason, but after checking i have found that all the 99 and 2000 silerado's with the 5.3 have had a strange miss/vibration. there are so many more problems that i can't explain them all within this comment section. . note the truck only has 8,592 miles. general motors has got a major problem with these trucks . gm trucks have really gone down hill .gm customers need to be able to get ahold of some upper level management to discuss their problems and address their concerns on timely manner. *ak (tiresize: p265/75r16)( dot number: tire size: p265/75r16 )

Power steering--steering rack assembly is somehow losing power steering fluid--no visible leaks...yet power steering reservoir is dry, needing almost a pint of fluid to fill to proper levels..on 5/26/2000 dealership replaced steering rack (complete assembly)..(truck was purchased new from the same dealership on 03/17/2000)...as defective and under warranty with only 3762 miles on odometer...on 06/06/2000, truck was again in shop to be checked (after a road trip of 3700 miles in 7 days) for power steering fluid leakage as it needed over 1/2 pint to fill power steering fluid reservoir...odometer mileage this date 7798...determination of problem has not been diagnosed as of close of business this date (06/06/2000). however, the service manager at (randy owens) at all star chevrolet in baton rouge, la stated that the steering rack (complete assembly) has been replaced twice on his personal new chevrolet truck, and that supposedly chevrolet is aware of this problem and is redesigning the steering components to correct. mr. owens also stated that this has been a problem that they have been seeing for some time now...several months...but that the only recourse is to r & r the steering rack.*ak

I was in a head on collision and received a compound fracture to my right femur bone, 2 black eyes and fractured ribs due to the inactivation of the drivers and passenger airbag modules, also the steering wheel bent resembling an airplane wheel. my wife checked the internet after the incident and found there was a recall for the airbag module on the year of my 2000 chevrolet silverado truck. we were never notified of this before the incident, but are currently receiving updates today. do not understand why we were never notified of this. the truck is now in a storage yard and we are awaiting the response from the insurance adjustor.
