The office of defects investigation (odi) opened a preliminary evaluation (pe06-016) on may 4, 2006 based on eleven vehicle owner questionnaires (voqs) and early warning (ewr) data alleging sudden engine shutdown while driving as a result of crank position sensor failures in my 2001-2002 general motors c/k platform vehicles equipped with 8.1l engines.in response to an information request letter sent by odi, general motors (gm) provided owner complaint information, field reports and warranty claim data based on a population of 108,338 vehicles. the data was categorized by engine stalls while driving, engine stalls with an unknown driving condition, no start conditions and claims where it was indeterminate if an engine stall occurred while driving.general motor's response included 1,213 owner complaints and field reports of which 289 were categorized as engine stalls while driving allegedly caused by crank position sensor failures. general motors also submitted warranty claims from its regular warranty (5 years/50,000 miles) and from its extended warranty database. from the regular warranty database there were 3,140 claims of crank position sensor replacement of which 147 claims were from consumers alleging engine stall while driving.gm stated that 2,841 of the claims were indeterminate if an engine stall occurred while driving.from its extended warranty database, gm submitted 1,561 claims of crank position sensor failure that it also stated were indeterminate as to whether an engine stall occurred while driving.in total, gm reports 4,701 claims of crank position sensor failure combining regular warranty and extended warranty.similar to gm's statistical analysis, odi's analysis showed that the failure rate for warranty claims of engine stall while driving at three years in service is low (less than 1%).however, further analysis determined that the my 2001 vehicle build period from may 2000 through october 2000 had significantly higher (more than four times) crank position failure rates in both consumer complaint data and warranty claim data than in the build period from november 2000 through july 2001.adding the claims of known engine stall while driving and claims where engine stall was indeterminate, the failure rate at three years in service for this population is over 6%.an engineering analysis (ea06-016) has been opened to further assess the frequency and potential safety consequences associated with the alleged defect in vehicles built from may 2000 through october 2000.

103,000 miles on 2001 chev. silverado p/u, 4th time that brakes need to be replaced, anti loc noise was constant since taking delivery from dealer. was told this was normal sound. i don't think so. many close calls for rear end collisions which would have been my fault esp. at speeds as low as 30 mph. just found out that there may be a problem. also, antifreeze complaint with smell. smell makes us nauseous .faucet -running sound coming from just below dash but under hood, paid dealer to fix twice, went back to gm dealer to try and remedy for the third time since it was still under the shops warranty and of course no longer in business. last complaint, daytime running lamps need to be replaced all the time. replaced one day, less than 48 hours later, need to be replace again. rusted from water in headlamp.

We purchased our 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500 new. right around the 15,000 mile mark we noticed a slight tapping in the engine. this seemed to only occur on start up and mostly in the morning when cold. it would tap for several seconds and then dissipate. initially we thought it was a lifter, but we have since come to find out it is not. the overall diagnosis is gm piston slap. this occurs when the pistons are ill fitted to the cylinder walls, and hence you get the noise. we were told it was nothing to be concerned about. gm knows of the problem (well they don't call it a problem), but refuse to do anything about it. they say they have tested these engines thoroughly and the piston slap causes no long term engine problems. the noise not only began to get louder, but also became non stop. it did not go away, and now we have to listen to it all the time. after repeated trips to the dealership for recording of this problem, we still have no resolution. and they have now put us off long enough that the factory warranty has expired. i must say that gm knows how to give you the run around. there is even a website dedicated to this such problem. http://www.pistonslap.com go visit, it is some interesting reading. non the less,gm will do nothing about the problem, so we are stuck with a vehicle that embarrasses us each time we drive it. what a shame, because i really do otherwise like my truck. *ak

Last year my truck started developing a pause in the engine. i had my local dealer investigate the problem. they stated the fuel injectors needed cleaned so they put in an additive. they stated that the problem was normal after 15,000 miles. a little while longer my wife was driving me to the airport (two hours from my home) during the trip the truck started making the same noise and having the same hesitation problems but with a little more vengeance. when we arrived a the airport we had turned the vehicle off so that i could unload my travel bags. my wife tried to start the truck to leave and could not get it going. i had to leave to catch my flight leaving my wife at the curb with a defective vehicle. i did give her the information for roadside assistance. she contacted roadside help and the truck was towed to a local dealer. they were not able to get the vehicle started and fixed so they got my wife a rental and arrangements were made for the dealer to fix the truck and i would return after my trip to pick it up. during the time i had been gone i had found out through my wife that the dealer felt there was a cracked block and would have the truck fixed for me. on my arrival back in indianapolis i made my way to the dealer. thinking i had a somewhat new engine. in fact i was told that their prognosis was wrong and that it was just a oxygen sensor that had failed. it was good as new! well here i am not even a year later and having the same problems. this time with all three kids and my wife in the truck and returning from toledo. 30 minutes on the side of the road at night, until it started and limped it home. *nlm

Cold start knock or piston slap. my 2001 silverado 6.0l sounds like a diesel when i start it up. problem began at 11,000 miles. now have 18,400 miles. - piston slap is louder and more persistent. gm has acknowledged problem, issued service request #, but no service and no response. very disappointed in gm customer service and product. gm should remedy huge engineering mistake and fix these engines or buy vehicles back! *jb

After only having this new truck for 2 days the transmission was taken out of it due to a ticking noise in the engine. the mechanic was advised by gm to take out the transmission and replace a flywheel. after 2 weeks of waiting for a part i picked up my truck. the next day the noise was back. i have had 2 gm reps listen to the noise. the secound rep told me that it was entrained gasses and that there was nothing they could do about it. i did not purchase this truck making the noise and do not want it anymore after the transmission has been taken out.*ak

My complaint is regarding a knocking noise coming from my engine of my 2001 chevrolet silverado. it sounds like the pistons are hitting the cylinder wall of my engine. i do have 140,000 miles on it but the problem started about 3-4 years ago. the reason i didn't complain because dealers have always said that it was normal. but from online forums i hear that i am not the only one having this problem. my engine has lost a significant amount of power and i think that is the reason why. *jb

I was seeing a low coolant warning light that was intermittent. i added distilled water to the coolant system several time in the amount for a total of about a half gallon. i searched for a leak in the coolant hoses but could not find a leak. i checked the dip stick to see if the oil was cloudy or had bubbles but did not see any. (i use mobil 1 synthetic oil). after about a week the coolant warning light came on at a higher frequency so i took the truck to the dealer. they diagnosed the problem as head gasket leaks and possible water pump gasket leaks. the bill for the repair was $1200. i was later told the head bolts lost torque and stretched. the heads had never been removed and the truck had never required any repairs except for the broken tail gate cables which caused me to fall off the back trying to load my kayak on top. i do not believe a truck with 72000 miles should have to have the head bolts replaced. gm was of no help because they knew i had insurance to cover 80% of the repair they did extend the warranty up to 100,000 miles on the head bolts and for the clatter in the valves that they said is normal. next truck will be toyota. *ak

Engine is using between 4 and 7 qts of oil between oil changes. general motors designed a new pcv valve in hopes of solving this oil usage problem. it has not helped one bit. the truck is not leaking the oil out on the ground. there is no blue smoke coming from tailpipe. this to me seems to be air pollution. i was told it was a nation wide problem not just mine. the vehicle is doing this at normal highway driving speeds of 55 to 70 mph. dt

The engine started knocking upon cold start up at approx. eight thousand miles, and a problem started with a engine pinging noise(valve clatter) at the same mileage. the problems were reported to the dealer several times in which no attempt for correction was made on repairing the engine knock. the valve clatter problem has been worked on more than three times with no solution. now the problem is deemed unrepairable or as the dealer states normal as my reply is that the truck did not make any noise untill 8,000 miles, if the noise is normal why did it take 8,ooo miles for the problem to arrise. at the present time the engine knocks on both hot and cold start and valve clatter is experienced upon acceleration, constant speeds, and is the worst when trying to tow a trailer of less than 30% of vehicles max gvwr. the second problem is the bumping, knocking loose steering sensation felt in the steering wheel. this problem has also been worked on several times with no solution. i have recently been informed that there are new intermediate steering shaft parts that are suppose to fix my problem, but i am not being told of a completion or delivery date on this correction. my concern is that the steering is going to malfunction causing a accident. i have contacted the dealership many times with my concerns. the only replies i have received are yes there is a problem, but we don't know how to fix it, or will call you! it seems to me that a manufacturer that can design and manufacturer millions of vehicles should know how to fix what they produce. dt

I purchased my vehicle and 1 week after purchase the engine began making a knocking noise which proceeded to get louder. i phoned my dealership and they made an appt to bring in the vehicle for inspection. i was told at that time that the vortec engine made that sound and there was nothing they could do. i disagreed as it didnt knock when i purchased it. they did a top engine clean and returned the vehicle. i drove it to wyoming and the same day i picked it up it was knocking and missing. i phoned the dealership and they said to bring it in when i got home and gave me gm cares number in case it broke down. i took the vehicle back in and they have now had it for 16 days. nothing has been done to repair it . i phoned gm they said 1 out of 4 vortec engines have this problem..they have no fix for it but i should get at least 36 thousand miles from the engine. i told them that was not acceptable i paid 28 thousand dollars for the truck and was told i should get at least 200 thousand miles on the engine. they were aware of this problem before i purchased the vehicle but never disclosed this to me. the transmission is also spinning in gear. i was at a stoplight and at the green light accelerated but the transmission spun then jumped into gear and almost threw the truck into the vehicle in front of me. also towing my horse trailer the transmission doesnt shift properly.*ak

On 3 of the only 4 occasions i have had to drive this vehicle at 70 mph for any extended period when outside temperatures exceeded 90, the following symptoms have manifested: loud engine knock sufficient to shake vehicle and discharge of large cloud of gray (not the black as is typical for a diesel) smoke. numerous cars have driven off the road behind me to avoid the cloud of smoke that obscures their vision (and possibly to avoid parts from a motor they may think has blown up). vehicle is presently at king chevrolet, tyler, texas for 2nd time (not selling dealer) and had been at one other dealer; lewis chevrolet, canton, texas. problem has not been diagnosed. dealers say that gm technicians say problem is unique - no other owners have reported this problem. problem has been reported to gm which has assigned the complaint file #4913340. at time of this filing, it is unknown what, if any action gmc intends to take. i regard these symptoms as potentially hazardous to occupants of my vehicle. i regard the large and sudden exhaust discharges as being seriously hazardous to other motorists.*ak
